The Personal Hygiene Thread

Banned deucer.

Hello Smogon, and welcome to a thread that has been 3 and a half years in the making. I'd like to start this thread off with a quote from Gilbert K. Chesterton.

Man does not live by soap alone; and hygiene, or even health, is not much good unless you can take a healthy view of it or, better still, feel a healthy indifference to it.

The Personal Hygiene Thread

The personal hygiene thread is all about finding and achieving your hygienic goals with an emphasis on community. It is a thread for everyone of ALL hygiene levels.

Features of this Thread

Below are a few "features" of this thread, things I not only hope to see and cannot wait to read about from each individual person, but hope they'll help keep this thread exciting, alive, and fun to participate in. After all, this is ultimately about you. the success you see will be no one else but your own, and it is you that will get to enjoy your body and it's aroma. Feel free to post about the various products you use. You can use the list below for a guideline.

This was originally a thread that was intended to be introduced in the summer. We chose the summer because we know it's a time when we all sweat, so hygiene becomes very important. Also, in the summer people tend to have more time, so they can focus on what's important etc. But the truth is that there is really no "best time" to start. You have to choose to start, and whenever that is will have to do as far as best time goes. School has started for many of us and it certainly won't be easy to get your hygienic goals in time. However, I've seen some of my best results during the school year. If you want it bad enough you'll achieve it, and you know we will all be here cheering you on both in failure and in success. Well i guess it would be more like "encouraging" you during the failure sections.

And remember, never let the water run~

I'm gonna admit to something right now that I would never admit to if this thread hadn't been made: Before yesterday, I hadn't showered for 7 and a half months. Yes, you read that right. Last night I had a long talk with Faint and he convinced me that this was not the way I should be living, and I'm glad I took his advice because I feel amazing. Let me tell you, people, that first shower is definitely hard, it might be one of the hardest things you'll ever have to do in your life. But once you get over that hump, you're on your way to a happy and healthy lifestyle.

Thank you Faint! Great thread, luvdisc'd

I took a huge step in my life last month, by having a shower. I was scared people would judge me for this, seeing as it was my first time. Over the month, I've gradually begun to have showers more often; it really builds my self-esteeem. I don't know if I'm ready for soap yet.

Life is hard.

So what're everyone's strategies for keeping clean?

I try and think about cleanliness at least three times a day, I know it's a huge time commitment but its so much easier to focus when you feel spic and span.

I acheive this with a brand of soap that I have known and love for years now.

I have to work a few extra hours a week to support this, but it really is a small price to pay. Time wise.

Hmmm I've been using this soap:

Could this be behind my lack of proper hygeine?

On a side note, Linda O Sullivan is my Auntie.

I shower in bacon grease 2-3 times a week and I haven't used soap in 8 years to be honest. Body wash is the closest thing that I use but I get lazy at times.

A rat is always a rat.

I live in the slums of Mubai, Faint. Could you post a video for me demonstrating what a shower is? As I have never heard of that here.

I made a video a couple of months ago explaining how. I hope you'll find it helpful. Good luck on your journey.

I don't have any products that I swear by (I usually just pick up whatever's on sale) but I do shower daily, sometimes twice if I go to the gym. The second shower is always just a rinse though, no soap or anything as too much can dry out your skin.

Also I kinda get sweaty balls from time to time and its pretty fucking annoying. Anyone hear of this? http://www.freshballs.com/ca/en/
I'm seriously considering ordering some, it seems like a good idea and its only 15 bucks.

I would never say this irl because the world isn't ready to know the truth yet:

Don't use shampoo. Do use conditioner.

Sources: I have clean and awesome hair.

ive heard not using shampoo or conditioner is good from a model because supposedly they kill the natural oils in your hair!

anybody have any experience?

Man I live in the freaking desert:

Nearly all of your "features" are near useless to me. I suppose I can use toothpaste as a ration though when the food runs out though, thanks!

I have frizzy-ass hair (and frizzy ass hair too), so I make sure never to use shampoo more than once a week, and I use conditioner every other day so I don't get knots or dreads. Soap is horrible for your skin, it dries it out and it's just bad all around so I skip that completely, water ought to be enough to clean your body unless you're gross. I do sometimes use soap if I have hella cuts, bruises, scabs, open wounds, etc, I get really bad scrapes because I fall down all the fucking time for the sports I play (Squash and Soccer). Tooth Paste is not optional, but floss is really more of a twice a week type of thing for me, I should probably floss more. I should also get mouth wash because I'm addicted to cigarettes now, so my teeth need all the help they can get.

PS: I have eczema, I just treat it with hydrocortizone. I do use deodorant erryday.

for all your hygiene needs:

(dont use this stuff on your ass crack)

It is bad for your hair if you shampoo or condition too often. Phil made a thread saying he gave up soap and shampoo for a month and he felt better for it. I stopped using shampoo after that. It's now been a long time (I want to say almost two years but that doesn't sound right) since I've used shampoo and my hair is healthier for it. I also don't use soap as I have dry skin and I causes me to peel / crack. Other than that I brush twice a day with arm & hammer and shave using an electric razor and shave my junk once every few days.

Living the dream

Edit:
Diet helps control oil and sweat production too. I rarely wear deoderent or anything, as I don't really sweat, trimming your armpit hair also helps stop and control sweating

I live in a desert far away as well. What is the best way to shower and shave with sand?

Act all sexy. People will give you proper hygeine products that way. Don't forget to use sandpaper when replacing toilet rolls, they also help bleaching your backside.

look, all I'm saying is that at the end of the day, it's soap in vs. sweat out. If you want to smell fresh and clean, you have to use more soap than you sweat, and you won't get a more natural smell when you use more soap than sweat, so if that smell is your goal then you have to sweat more.

I know girls usually don't like having the more natural smell, but that's just playing into a stereotype. Girls can sweat without getting too smelly like guys. You don't get smelly overnight.

While this isn't the cheapest routine, it's an investment that will pay off (and the cleanser alone lasts me about half a year so). There are some cheaper alternatives to these I think, I've heard that botanics for men are quite good for their price.

Other than that I just use regular supermarket brand soap, Nivea for men roll-on antiperspirant, Gilette shaving foam, and for summer atm I use this eau de toilette:

I also hear that if you have problems with ingrown hairs or razor burn when shaving you should try using a double-edged razor. From what I've heard they make the experience a thousand times better.

I am a hygene minimalist, I only brush my teeth, use soap and conditioner. I can go up to 3 days withouth showering, and I don't floss.

I never use deodorant, ever, fuck it, all it does is make my armpits feel slimy.

speaking of hygiene, I really have to wash my clothes, it coming up on 3 weeks that I haven't washed them
