The Personal Hygiene Thread

i wish more people would take this thread seriously!!

lately i've been a real health nut about my hair, since it's the first time in a long time that i've had hair past my shoulders, and long hair is kind of a bitch to manage, unless you do it correctly. i've dyed my hair umpteen times over the years, so my hair is definitely a bit high-maintenance at the moment (until i chop most of it off next month)!

i've been playing with a bunch of different products, from biolage shampoo/conditioner to a slew of other hydration-concentration brands, but i've come back to use organix products! i use organix coconut milk shampoo and conditioner, along with an organix coconut anti-breakage serum that smells amazing and makes my hair silky smooth, and smell nice too!

i use 100% natural argan oil as a general moisturizer, it makes me glow and hydrates perfectly all over my face/hair with just one or two pumps. seriously addicted to this shit.

i brush my teeth with crest glamorous white toothpaste, and rinse with another crest whitening product. i WOULD floss if i didn't have permanent retainers on the backs of my teeth on the top and bottom, which make flossing a bit difficult (or just annoying) since i would have to use special floss with a durable end to poke through my teeth, and under the wire that way. flossing does make the mouth feel nicer, but a visit to the dentist will just scrape all the plaque off anyway, which is only visible on the backs of my teeth, so i don't really care. i take care of my teeth well enough that it doesn't spread to the front, so despite being anal about oral hygiene it doesn't really bother me!

i use a dove body wash, which smells like vanilla and brown sugar, typically only if i haven't used it in a while or i know i am particularly dirty/have been sweating after a work out. otherwise i don't really feel the need to use soap. after i cut my hair and dye it one last time, then start to let my natural color grow out again my hair will be a LOT easier to manage, so i probably won't need to wash/condition it as often, and will just use the argan oil to freshen it up and give it a nice shine. short hair is so much easier to manage, i can't fucking wait v_v

I have vastly improved throughout 2012 in terms of hygiene. I used take a shower about once a week or so, and never used soap, I did brush my teeth, but I was just a filthy guy. Now that I'm trying improve my appearance, I shower once a day (and use shampoo, Soap), and I brush my teeth with Whitening toothpaste+mouth wash, floss, and use white strips. My dandruff seems like its improving but not really my acne. I swear I just doesn't go away, and I've been using all sorts of cleansers, its quite annoying.

I shower every day and use shampoo+conditioner+body wash and I brush my teeth every day without fail. And if I ever do forget, I feel absolutely disgusting the next day and I will do everything I can to fix that.

Never had a cavity and I always smell nice and have great hair. What more could I want? ;)

Your hair is extremely unhealthy.

EDIT:
if you do choose to wash your hair with shampoo then you should do it 3 times a week at most.

"Washing every day can be bad for your hair."
MOSTLY MYTH "Daily washing is safe and healthy," says Mort Westman, the cosmetics chemist. If you have oily hair, it's fine to suds up every day--but even oily types should use a gentle formula (translation: one with moisturizing ingredients, like silicones, shea butter, or panthenol). People with coarse or dry hair might want to be more conservative and wash every other day, says L'Oréal's Youssef. No matter what kind of hair you have, as long as you stay away from harsh formulas that strip natural oils and treat your strands with conditioner, regular shampooing won't do any harm.

Regardless, I don't really know what "unhealthy" hair even means. It looks nice and feels nice and it's not causing any real problems with my overall health, so what's the problem?

I'm not being a dick, I legitimately want to be educated because I have no idea what healthy hair entails and I'm willing to do something different if I'm doing something that will fuck my hair up in the long run! D:

If you are washing with mild shampoos (most shampoos are not mild shampoos) then it has no negative to your hair, it simply just makes it smell good and gets rid of a little bit of oil (oil is technically good for your hair but not too much which is why I wash it with cold water after a few days). Healthy hair means that you're more likely to not lose your hair later in life or thinning your hair later. It also means it shines and is soft to touch. You should shampoo if you are a thinned hair person, because your hair doesn't stop oil production from reaching your scalp, and in the same way, your forehead (which causes pimples). Thick or curly haired folk don't have this concern because it takes forever for oil to reach.

I shower every day when I have stuff on. I wash my hair every day but I have a special shampoo that has conditioning stuff in it specifically designed to be an every day shampoo.

I brush when I get up and before I go to bed. I floss if I need to. Clean my ears every so often. I use deodorant semi regularly.

I wash my hands regularly, after doing something that makes them dirty, before and after cooking and if I've been on the computer of playing games (making my hands sweaty) I'll just clean them as well.

I also use showers as a wake up mechanism when I need to be up early or am feeling tired. If I have on of those I won't wash my hair.

As far as I see it, I'm not perfect in my personal hygiene, but I am better than I used to be. My gf is a bit of a neat freak when it comes to hygiene and she is cool with how I am so I suppose that's cool.

My hair is outrageously thick (as in, usually when I get a trim from someone new they'll tell me my hair is some of the thickest they've ever seen. Whenever I'm washing my hair, I generally use generic "manly" products like this: http://www.theaxeeffect.com/img/mobile/product/hair_shampoo_dual.png

With this in mind, what should I do to have a better routine and healthier hair?

If you want to continue washing your hair to retain that "axe smell" then simply wash it at most three to four times a week, so skip every other day. If your hair is as thick as you say you might want to skip every two but then I'm not sure if you'd still have that axe smell

let's see:

-shower every day
-use soap every time i shower, but shampoo every other day (so like 3 times a week)
-brush my teeth twice a day, don't floss (fuck that)
-dance 24/7

My hair looks absolutely awful if I go one day without using shampoo, literally I look like a tramp. My hair is very thick, is there something wrong with me ?_?

For the record I use a 2 in 1 Shampoo and Conditioner named wash and go most every morning.

Since you have thick hair and you wash every day your hair now over produces oil to make up for the oil you lost. The best way to get out of the reliance on shampoo is to try to go one week only washing with water thenstart a three or four weekly shampoo routine
