The Balloon (Drifblim Discussion)

This thing is strange, but i like it. I would like to know more ideas for it... well, lets take a look at Drifblim!

Base Stats
HP: 150 ==> Super
Atk: 80 ==> So so
Def: 44 ==> Poor
SpAtk: 90 ==> Enough
SpDef: 54 ==> Poor
Spd: 80 ==> Enough

Traits:
Acrobatic: Ups speed when Drfiblim has used an item (x2)
Detonate: If Drifblim is fainted by a physical attack, opponent is hurt.

Physical Movepool (Very Limited)
- Explosion
- Gyro Ball?

Special Movepool (Same as Above)
- Shadow Ball
- Eerie Wind
- Hidden Power
- Psychic
- Silver Wind
- Thunderbolt

Support Movepool (Here comes the good part)
- Substitute
- Hypnosis
- Haze
- Destiny Bond
- Psych Up
- Sleep Talk
- Thunder Wave
- Will-O-Wisp
- Skill Swap
- Rest
- Toxic
- Baton Pass
- Calm Mind

Well, as you can see, Drifblim isn't really going to attack, but it can be used as a subpasser, with subs of 120+ HP

I'll give a shot:

Driftblim @Pinch Berry (Petaya's the best option)
Trait: Acrobatic
EVs: 252HP for sure, enough SPD and the rest might go in SAtk or in both defences to last a little longer.
Timid
~ Substitute
~ Baton Pass
~ Hypnosis
~ Haze / Shadow Ball / Thunderbolt / Will-O-Wisp

With 3 immunities (Normal, Fight & Ground) and a 4x resistance to Bug, Drifblim can enter to the field fairly easily, then set a Sub and proceed to Sleep what comes out. Baton Pass to your sweeper FTW. The 4th slot might be an attack, Shadow Ball with STAB or maybe Thunderbolt to take care of Waters.

Lack of Leftovers hurts, so if you don't like Acrobatic, then use Detonate.

Your turn.

My weakest part in making a team is the EVs but I think since Driftblim has immense HP it'd be best to put little EVs in HP and focus on defenses..Since even if it has 1000 HP with no def or sp. def it's not gonna last long at all.

Also yes you need to have held an item for Acrobatic's affect to kick in..So your best bet would be a berry and hope that it activates.

this pokemon does indeed intrest me. despite his five weaknesses, he has monsterous hp. i am well aware of the poor defenses, and a weakness to both of t-tars top moves. he also has three stat afflicting moves that this current metagames have.(hypnosis,t-wave,will-o-wisp) B-Pass, substitute, calm mind, and hp are probably what he is noticed for most. yep, he can afflict, pass a lot of crap, and has monsterous hp.

Drifblim has the same defensive ability as Gengar (which are kind of crap) without Gengar's awesome attack options and speed. So unless we're talking UU, you really have to push Drifblim's abilities to the limit.

Calm Mind is a nice option for bolstering your special defense, getting some offense, and setting up a Baton Pass. Calm Mind/Baton Pass/Thunderbolt/Shadow Ball, perhaps. If you want Sub it can go over either attack option, I guess.

Where Sub shines is with Acrobatic. Sub down to a Liechi, Petaya, Salac, or even Starf boost against a faster Pokemon, then use Acrobatic to BP a sub and the berry boost in one go. Pretty much needs Thunderbolt to beat common phazers.

No, it's not BPable

EDIT: Curses Misty for outspeeding me. Arm Hammer Swampert rebels!

K', but if you say that Drifblim goes to UU, Hazers and Phazers in UU are not weak against Electric, you're only saying that because of Skarm...

So.. any more suggestions about this balloon?

It also gets Stockpile, which now functions like Cosmic Power (and can be BP'd) although DEF and SP.DEF can't be boosted past +3 this way.

Rest@Chesto Berry will also activate Acrobatic if you're worried about taking too much of a risk with the pinch berries

Also, can Focus Power be BP'd? It would help out Snipe Drapion a lot.

In case you couldn't tell I don't like standard sets :P

Hypnosis, Substitute, Baton Pass, Shadow Ball @ Pinch Berry is my favourite theoretic set. Substitute repeatly against a faster Pokemon, and when your Salac Berry kicks in, Hypnotize them. Baton Pass a really high HP Substitute plus that Berry boost to anything you want while your opponent isn't even attacking you. Heck, you could use Calm Mind in the last slot, and Baton Pass that along.

mekkah, salac is nice to pass, but you dont really need it on drifblim to get a speedy pass. any other berry also works because the Acrobatic will give you enough speed to put down a Hypnosis and then pass or even CM if thats your style. the Acrobatic speed boost wont be passed, but having boosted your speed and another stat (petaya if staying in to Shadow Ball) at the same time is quite nice.

could do somewhat well in BL, i believe.

So how good are this thing's defences? I dont know how to work it out. I mean, I know a pokemon with, say, 100/100/100 is obviously great, but which is preferable between:

a) 100/50/50
and
b)50/100/100?

Obviously moves like Seismic Toss and Pain Split affect calculations, but for an attack like, say, Thunderbolt, which of a) and b) come out worse?

As for a moveset, I'm tempted by Khawarith's suggestion. Stockpile is rarely used, and is therefore cool.

Driftblim@Chesto Berry
Unburden - (When Driftblim uses its item, its Speed doubles).
~ Shadow Ball/Eerie Wind
~ Stockpile
~ Rest
~ Baton Pass

Stockpile to boost defence and special defence up to 3 times, which can later be passed. Rest when HP is low. Chesto berry kicks in, both waking you up immediately with full HP and status and, with Unburden, doubling your speed to a plentiful ~560. This is where you Baton Pass to the beneficiary of your choice. Shadow Ball or Eerie Wind for STAB, depending on personal preference, though it should be noted that Eerie Wind's chance of raising all of your stats better facilitates the Baton Passing strategy under consideration.

I absolutley love the idea of B-passing some defense stat increases from stockpile, and I beleive the only other pokemon that can do this is Mawile.

Going into what Pooch has suggested:
@Chesto berry
8 spd/252 def/248 spdef
Bold
<Unburden>
Ominous Wind/Shadowball
Stockpile
Rest
Batonpass

398 spd after resting, hope for some major hax from OW.

A stupid novelty one:
8 spd/252 def/248 spdef
Impish
@Powerful Herb
Fly
Stockpile
Hypnosis
Batonpass

Take a hit, Fly up and come down on the same turn. Hypnosis next turn with your new 398 speed. Stockpile on the switch. Next turn BP to your next poke who will be slapped in the face with an attack but will have x1.5 defenses. It may not seem like a lot but it could easily turn a 2hko into a 3hko, which is perhaps enough for the next poke to set up.

Is it just me or is this a reject from the heartless auditions when they were making Kingdom Hearts?

I do like the stupid novelty set; thats a clever use of powerful herb, especially as Fly is the only flying move Drifblim can actually use his flying STAB on. Of course, instead of Stockpile you could run Calm Mind, which would be more appropriate for certain BP recipients. You're safe to use it on that set over stockpile, since the Fly/Powerful Herb combo satisfies the wackiness criterion necessary of any truly cool set, without needing the compounding influence of Stockpile.

Driftblim is clearly awesome. I'm confident that if we inflate his reputation enough with interesting movesets, his popularity in the OU metagame will positively balloon.

pooch, to answer your question: 50/100/100 is far better than 100/50/50. Consider no EVs:

200ATK/100BP on 241HP/236DF = 25-30%
200ATK/100BP on 341HP/136DF = 31-37%

Okay, now insert 252 EVs. For the 50/100/100, this is easy - max HP. For the 100/50/50, it's better to split them between the defensive stats (I'll just say this is true but you can calculate it yourself if you want).

200ATK/100BP on 304HP/236DF = 20-24%
200ATK/100BP on 341HP/168DF = 25-30%

To explain this in a formulaic way, your defenses are best when your HP and Defense are close to equal. Since HP is calculated with a higher stat (base *2 + IV + 110 as opposed to base *2 + IV + 5 for non-HP), the lower HP stat will be balanced out.

So how good are this thing's defences? I dont know how to work it out. I mean, I know a pokemon with, say, 100/100/100 is obviously great, but which is preferable between:

a) 100/50/50
and
b)50/100/100?

As Misty+ said, 50/100/100 would be much better. {According to Netbattle} the more damage the move does, the more defense lowers it.

Explanation: {According to NetBattle Damage Calculator} If the move does 170-200 damage, on average, 4 defense EV's will lower the damage by one point(169-199). If the move does 255-300 damage 4 defense EV's will lower the damage by approximately 1.7 and decreasing as you add more EV's

Actual numbers for the first 72 EV's: 2,1,2,2,2,1,2,2,1,2,1,2,2,1,2,1,2,1 Each number is how much 4 successive defense EV's lowered the damage. As you can see, the more defense that was added, the lower the move's power was, and the less effective the defense EV's became(ie more '1's show up as you go)

Long explanation for a short question, though I must say, somtimes giving 252 hp EV's is better because then you get decent survivability, AND 258 EV's to spend on other stats.

Anyway, back to Drifblim. His ability(Unburden) is basically a salac berry that can't be baton passed. Go with the berry that best compliments your team.

Drifblim @-----
Unburden
-Hypnosis
-Substitute(to activate the item)
-Baton Pass
-Ominous Wind/Calm Mind

Or becasue 90 special attack, +Unburden, and a berry of your choice, is not weak:

Drifblim @Petaya Berry(raises sp. attack)
Unburden
-Hypnosis/Substitute
-Shadow Ball
-Thunderbolt
-Hp-Flying(STAB)/Baton Pass(if you feel like passing the +sp. attack)

try this:

Drifblim @ Liechi Berry
Unburden
~Will-o-Wisp
~Explosion
~Embargo
~Recycle
It's simple. Will-o-wisp and embargo to piss them off. As soon as you get your hp low enough Liechi Berry kicks in, speed doubles and use recycle for 2 atk boosts. Then explode. This set makes Blissy piss its pants if you can pull it off.

I don't understand why they invested so much into his HP stat, although that means some big Subs:

~Substitute
~Calm Mind
~Baton Pass
~Thunderbolt / Shadow Ball / Hypnosis / Stockpile

The multi-passer. It can pass CMs and Stockpile boosts, making your reciepient pratically indestructible. If used in OU, I'd rather have something pass me Speed first like a Ninjask. The last slot is variant, whether you want Defense, whether you want set up time, or just an attack choice if you want to go crazy

I was thinking about using him as a special sweeper for kicks.

Drifblim@Petaya Berry
Unburden
Modest
6 HP / 252 Special Attack / 252 Speed
-Shadow Ball
-Thunderbolt
-Hypnosis / Will-o-Wisp / Thunder Wave
-Substitute

Switch into something that doesn't pose a threat or is slower, and start subbing down to low HP. If given the chance disable a poke. Once you get down to low enough HP, Drifblim goes from 259 speed and 306 Special Attack to 518 speed and 459 special attack. Enjoy.

try this:

Drifblim @ Liechi Berry
Unburden
~Will-o-Wisp
~Explosion
~Embargo
~Recycle

I doubt that would work. The Liechi's are a dead giveaway for explosion, and you would see something that resists coming in, probably gengar or such.

On Mekkah's Subpassing set I think Explosion deserves a definite mention over Shadow Ball as after you deplete Drifblim's HP a few times and wear out your usefulness, you have an Exploder on your hands who's faster than Electrode.

Natural Gift should set off the Unburden boost, correct? In which case you could try:

Drifblim @ Salac Berry (80 BP Fighting)
Unburden

Natural Gift
Shadow Ball / Recycle
Stockpile
Baton Pass

Natural Gift gives you a fighting move that should catch would-be Dark counters off guard, and it gives you a speed boost to boot. From there, Stockpile up defenses to BP them away. Shadow Ball gives you a counter to other ghosts (good luck with that, though), while Recycle lets you try NG Fighting again or get a speed boost that can be passed.
