Stealth Rock vs Spikes

Stealth Rock does 12.5% to anything that isn't weak against rock and 25% to anything weak against rock. So it's technically better because you only have to put one "layer" down in order to have it do its full damage.

And 50% to anothing 4x weak to Rock....

The downside is, of course, that it only does 6.25% damage to things that resist Rock or a measly 3.125% damage to things that double resist it.

Wow... doesn't that kindna screw over every flyer? So much for switching in on that earthquake...

What's "better" depends on what you expect your team to have more problems with.

Stealth Rock for the likes of Gyarados, Salamence, Gengar, Cresselia, Togekiss, Gliscor, Aerodactyl, and basically anything that flies or has Levitate.
Spikes for Rhyperior, Swampert, Garchomp, Torterra, Lucario, Empoleon, Metagross, Magnezone, Donphan, etc.

Gliscor and Skarmory take only 12.5%, so it's not every flyer. But close to it, sure.

Yeah. Stealth Rock does a great job of taking care of Pokemon quad weak to Rock. Switch in twice with it up and they die. Good thing too, because it takes care of those uber combos like Ice/Flying, Fire/Flying, and the rediculously powerful Bug/Flying

Any of the two are good. Spikes can be stacked, but nothing is immune to Stealth Rock. At least they don't go away after a while, unlike Poison Spikes. Poison Spikes had so much potential to be great too...

I thought Toxic Spikes wear off when a Poison type is switched in, and that they don't wear off on their own.

Toxic Spikes: The first layer of Toxic Spikes causes normal poison; if a Poison-type [presumably not a Crobat or levitating Poison like Gengar, note that this has not been tested yet], then they will absorb the Toxic Spikes and take them from the battlefield.

I think Stealth Rock is better. The fact that nothing is immune to it, unlike Spikes, and that a lot of Pokemon get it, again unlike Spikes.

does both spikes and stealth rock have the effect on not only your opponent but your pokemon also? So you would get hurt if you switched? havent used those moves at all so trying to strategize a new team with using those.

no... Spikes only affects the other team not your team

I only wish Defog worked like Rapid Spin, instead of... clearing your opponent's side of the spikes. Erm, being like a reversed RS. Thanks, GameFreak. >_>

Toxic Spikes being absorbed by poison types is new news to me, and it actually is dumb news. If they're just going to be absorb, there is no freaking point in using them.... Gamefreak likes to make potentially good things but then ruin them with a huge flaw.

How many people use Poison types that aren't Levitators (read: not Gengar/Weezing/also Crobat)?

Jiggy answered the topic already - it depends. Stealth Rock is great against Gyarados and Salamence, but Spikes has the potential to be far more deadly against a lot of other stuff, like Tyranitar, Rhyperior, Garchomp... really, a large number of metagame staples.

How is that "dumb news"? You can't poison Posion-types, period (I recall my good ol' days trying to do that to vairous Tentacool). Why should Toxic Spikes be any different? It would be dumb if it could be circumvented via Toxiic Spikes.

He doesn't mean that Poison-types aren't poisoned by Toxic Spikes, he means that once a Poison-type switches in, the Toxic Spikes are gone. Without even having to use Rapid Spin.

Perhaps we can say that they just absorbed the spikes with their immunity. That reminds me of those stitches that disintegrate; they don't need to remove them, they just disappear over time. Lame? I guess it is.
