Hi. I'm shrang and your everyday battler on the Smogon server. I've written a few warstories here and there back in 4th gen but I haven't written another in a looooong time. So, after a standard night playing Pokemon, I found a match which I really enjoyed and decided to warstory it. It was against Furai, a user that I've become reasonably acquainted with on my time at Smogon, especially in Ubers. Note: In this battle, I'm using the alt “Erioca”. The title comes from one of the most famous poems in the world (you can look up yourself).

An animated version of the log is pasted below (acknowledgements to Furai for taking it):

http://pokemon.aesoft.org/replay-Furai-vs-Erioca--29--2011-at-14h22

Note:
- Sandstorm and Leftovers are omitted unless a Pokemon takes Sandstorm damage without recovering it off.
- Commentary will be in black, scores and damages will be in red, while chat is in green, game text will be in blue

Firstly, let's get Team Preview out of the way:

So, just by looking at Furai's team, I smell a Lucario weakness. If I can remove that Celebi, I could probably come into set Lucario up on Tyranitar and go for a sweep. With Deoxys-S in the lead position, I doubt Furai would want to risk it setting up layers, so I reckon his Tyranitar would stay as lead. With that in mind, I send Lucario into lead position, since it doesn't look like anything on his team (apart from Celebi) can take Close Combats to the face.

Battle between Erioca and Furai started!

Furai sent out Bangirasu! (Tyranitar)
Erioca sent out Lucario!

The foe's Bangirasu's Sand Stream whipped up a sandstorm!

And so, let's begin! Lucario comes out of the blocks, ready to pulverise that Tyranitar to a pulp. Unless that Tyranitar is a ScarfTar, which has been rising in usage lately, that Tyranitar is going to run back home to his mummy. From the look of Furai's team, though I suspect his Tyranitar is your bog standard Stealth Rock Tyranitar, since those are generally the ones put in lead, while apart from Skarmory, there aren't any other Stealth Rock users on his team (and what a waste Skarm would be as a Stealth Rock user). Although, if he does outspeed and Superpower me, then my mouse is straight above the tiny “X” at the top right hand corner of the window.

Start of turn 1
Furai called Bangirasu back!
Furai sent out Skar! (Skarmory)

Lucario used Close Combat!

The foe's Skar lost 49% of its health!
Lucario's Defense fell!
Lucario's Sp. Def. fell!
Lucario is hurt by its Life Orb!

Just like I predicted, Tyranitar is not Scarfed, and Furai sends in his Skarmory to take the hit. I was more expecting him to go to Celebi, but I guess he was scared that I might use Crunch to fish it out. Nevertheless, Lucario takes a mighty chunk of Skarmory's health. I mean look at how beast that is, what physical attacker can do THAT to Skarm? Terrakion, maybe. Anyway, I thought I could kill Skarmory with a second Close Combat, but after doing a damage calc after the match, I realised Lucario cannot 2HKO physically defensive Skarm without Stealth Rock. Oh well. Also, for some reason, I can't see Leftovers on that Skarm. Shed Shell, maybe?

The foe's Skar landed on the ground!
The foe's Skar regained health!

Yeah, so I realise my mistake after doing the damage calc after the match. Lucky that Skarm didn't decide to just Brave Bird me to death. Whatever, Skarmory just Roosts and lives another day, while I (finally) realise it pointless to continue.

So, Lucario can come back and take a break and stop pounding at that metal bird. Seriously, how does Skarmory even fly? You'd think that a piece of steel, no matter how aerodynamic, is not taking off the ground without a rocket strapped to it. There's a reason aeroplanes are made of titanium. Game Freak, you fail physics forever.
Anyway, Deoxys-S comes in on the Roost and decides to set up fun hazards. Firstly, though, I want as little of his hazards on my side as possible.
Deoxys-S: “Hey!” *pulls down pants* “Get me if you can!”

I'm sorry Deoxys, you're just going to be a martyr. You're going to let that Tyranitar release some of his anger while you do me some good and set up those lovely entry hazards, okay? Anyway, Tyranitar doesn't want Deoxys escaping, so he decided to use Pursuit, which in this case was not the best choice, seeing as another layer is coming. See, anger does cloud your better judgement!

Tyranitar: “Uh-oh.”

Start of turn 7
Furai called Bangirasu back!
Furai sent out Sell A Bee! (Celebi)
Pointed stones dug into the foe's Sell A Bee!
The foe's Sell A Bee is hurt by spikes!

Lucario used Swords Dance!

Lucario's Attack sharply rose!

Ah crap, and I completely forgot that he still had Celebi. I actually don't carry Crunch or Ice Punch on this Lucario, but instead Bullet Punch to kill Terrakion and Gengar with (and be a much bigger pain to offensive teams in general). Even then, Celebis are ridiculously unpredictable with their EV spreads and movesets so I shouldn't be able to assume a slow Celebi anyway. Time to bring Lucario back, I guess.

Yep, wouldn't have worked. Choice Band Tyranitar get a free switch-in. An unboosted Celebi can't kill Tyranitar with anything (apart from probably Life Orbed Leaf Storm, in which he doesn't have). It seems reasonably safe to Pursuit, in my opinion. Time for your Celebi to get stalked and killed on the way home!

Ow, looks like I overpredicted. Tyranitar doesn't look very safe in this position at all. I could probably kill the Celebi, but it's a bit of gamble. What if he rolled minimum damage? My Tyranitar isn't that bulky. Time to high-tail it out of there. Just saying though, look how much Pursuit did. Choice Band Tyranitar FTW!

So I bring in my own Celebi to take the Giga Drain, just to be on the safe side. His Celebi has Psychic and Giga Drain. If I were to hazard a guess, his last two moves are likely to be Nasty Plot and Hidden Power Fire or Recover. Standard Celebis don't run much speed, and mine runs enough to outspeed Adamant Gliscor. I'm pretty sure my Celebi would win if he decides to stay in.

Of course it's Lucario. I mean, what other Pokemon can bring back a match from 4-1 down? Calm Mind Manaphy, maybe, but hey. That jackal is one strong fucker.

Hopefully this was enjoyable to read. Catch you all next time!

He had a great chance of winning if he sent his Luke before his other fodder. Thats kinda huge it but still a decent warstory.

Lucario: “You are a stepping stone, and I'm moving up. Don't take it personally.” (You get a cookie for telling me where I got this quote from)

Fire Emblem: The Sacred Stones. Google makes puzzles so much easier.

Good warstory, Lucario is the biggest beast ever.

Lol, Wobbuffet still hasn't lost its touch - supported Lucario's sweep like none other. I was surprised that Lucario didn't even manage to scrape half of Wobbufet's HP - hot damn..

Great format, shrang. Personally, I prefer your comments after the mon's health % and score.

You should've went for the speed tie, 50% > 37.5%! I guess this was still the "safer option," though, since you won't risk any loss, but a more probable tie.

Awesome read!

Small misplay on turn 7, you could've gone for Close Combat when Skarmory would die to it thanks to Stealth Rock, but if Celebi came in it might Recover then and nothing would change other than an extra 10% damage on your Lucario (lol).

Anyway very nice warstory (if a little straightforward), and funny comments! I wonder if Furai intentionally made his team not have Leftovers anywhere to mindgame his opponents? :naughty:

o:

Epic match shrang. Definetly one of the best matches I've ever had in a long while.

As for the last turn, I calc'd that my ExtremeSpeed would do about 30.60-35.94% and I forgot LO. I calc'd his ESpeed and saw that I have a pretty good amount to win this, so I chose Close Combat to end this up in a tie! :D

A few misplays on my side, especially with Lucario against Wobby, but other than that, awesome match shrang, I want to see some of those in Ubers!

Very good match and well presented warstory. I just about shat myself at my end from anticipation. Good Game to both of you sirs.

very nice. you dont see lucarios running around at extremespeeds (pun very much intended) these days very often.

Good match shrang. Great formatting, and amazing commentary.

Your comeback from 4-1 down with Lucario was just brilliant.

Loved it. 8/10

Formatting was good. Commentary was great. You showed that wobbufett hasn't lost its touch thanks to "lol encore nerf!1". And lucario proves himself once again.

God bless lucy. I need to make a team around her lol. What set is best ? Special NP, Physical SD, or (Physical/Special/Mixed) Agility ? Btw even though you lost it was an amazing battle 10/10 (11/10 for using Lucy :D)
EDIT: Maybe Washington was using a wide lense because both hydro pump and WoW hit. And they're notoriously haxy moves. Have you asked your opponent ? Lol

Brilliant warstory/comeback/presentation/etc., nothing much to say. 9/10, cos the formatting wasn't superneat awesome.

That was a pretty damn good read :) nice job. It's cool to see someone use Wobbuffet properly for once. I've always wondered why you don't see more of it around these days. I guess it's just because most people don't know how to use it properly. Maybe this warstory will spur some usage?

In any case, keep it up and I hope to read another warstory from you in the future!

Quote's from caellach, one of the six generals of Grado in Fire emblem:sacred stones. It's the generic line; you can get others for certain people.

Oh yeah, and i knew that WITHOUT searching on google *Cough knightofthewind Cough*

I enjoyed this, but one thing is bugging me - why did Furai throw Skarmory and Celebi into the meat grinder before gambling with the potential Lucario speed-tie? Had he tried Lucario sooner there's every chance he'd have won the game as the same outcome may have happened but he'd have still had two Pokemon in reserve. Kinda ruins the money shot of the match for me. :\
