(Little) Things that annoy you in Pokémon

Meowth is cute and a Kanto Pokémon and one of the most iconic characters in the anime, so it would be surprising if it didn't get attention.
Plus Meowth has now received not one but *two* regional forms, on top of a meme Gigantamax which unironically is also pretty useful in game for money grinding, at this point I would be surprised if it doesnt get a 4th one in gen 9.

(Has G-max Meowth ever shown up in the anime?)

You know what’s stranger? The Pokédex describes Dratini as an extremely rare Pokémon that was described as a mythical Pokémon, but when a sea dragon found in every game except the Hoenn games but a domestic house cat can only be found in four games, you have to raise an eyebrow at Dratini’s Pokédex entries.

I mean, it has less to do with how many regions Dratini shows up in and more how it appears every time. It's only in the Safari Zone in Kanto, in which Baoba likely arranges for rare mons to be placed there, or as a distribution prize in the Game Corner. In Johto it's a gift from the Dragon's Den only or in the Safari Zone in HGSS. In Sinnoh it's more or less only in Mt. Coronet post-game, in Unova it's also post-game in one area, in Kalos it's a super rare fishing spawn in one route late in the game. In all three of those regions it's only in one area as a rare spawn via fishing, which is one of the more tedious methods of finding Pokemon. In Alola it's also a rare fishing spawn in just one island. In Galar it's only in the Crown Tundra at Ballimere Lake.

It may have been in several regions, but it's usually only in one area and the odds you will find one are very low, and it often requires a tedious means to find it.

(Has G-max Meowth ever shown up in the anime?)

It has. I don't recall the episode name right now but in the Journeys anime Team Rocket's Meowth Gigantamaxed at one point. Ash's Pikachu was also shown Gigantamaxing once.

old meowth is very cute considering it's a fatty cat. new meowth is fine but does have a lot of the "easy to animate" design rules which remove some of its cuteness imo
Blue Meowth is best Meowth in art. Before it was permanently bipedaled and skinny.

Alright, now that we've formally established what was blatantly obvious since February 26, 2021, can we please, please stop circulating the "BDSP 1 to 1 remakes no new content" meme?

It's also worth noting that the post I found this image from confirms this is, at the bare minimum, 2 weeks old. And yet despite us currently being in a drought of information nobody seemed to circulate this to correct people's dumb panic, or if anyone tried nobody was willing to listen to them. Make of that what you will.

"Nostalgic, yet fresh" or novelty or whatever is not exact a smoking gun when there's plenty of minor things they could have and still call it "fresh".

Like, just for example
These remakes feature updates like player-friendly conveniences of the modern Pokémon video game series and up-close-and-personal Pokémon battle scenes.
this has been part of the description since day 1. A suite of modern updates, combined with things like "its all in 3D now!" and "it's on switch, wow!", can easily be enough for marketing speak to play up anything new.

Which is all to say it's never going to be enough to assuage people's cynicism and fear until they actually show anything very distinctly new, presumably at e3. Then it can just sidegrade to different cynicism, as our people are want to do.

This is extremely vague and says nothing about what the "novelty" is going to be. Do they mean Platinum features like the extended Pokédex? Do they mean original story content like the Delta Episode? There's even less info in this quote than in the description we got shortly after the trailer dropped.

I wonder if BDSP will continue the trend amongst remakes of each one selling better than the previous.
FRLG - 12.00 million copies
HGSS - 12.72 million copies
ORAS - 14.39 million copies

Hopefully they will but things like the graphics and no confirmation of new features prior to the release may hold them back. Interestingly the same pattern holds true for 3rd versions/BW2/USUM, apart from Gen 1 of course.

The whole "faithful" quote people are shitting themselves over is just as vague and meaningless (literally every single remake of any game ever made is to some extent 'faithful' by virtue of being a remake of a pre-existing game), and yet everyone seems to be taking it as gospel that these games are just gonna be DP HD with a few Platinum features if that.

Reminder: Masuda is co-directing these games. His last directing role was Let's Go, deliberately the most "safe" remake they've ever done relative to the likes of HGSS or ORAS. And even that game revamped boss fight teams, changed encounter tables, introduced a whole new catching system and added Megas, Alolan forms and even a brand new Mythical family among a host of other tweaks. Am I seriously expected to believe that BDSP, possibly the most anticipated remake ever, is gonna change less things and be even safer than a game that was designed to lure in Go players and 5 year olds?

Yknow what other game Masuda directed? Diamond and Pearl themselves. 15 years have passed since those games came out. Once again, am I seriously expected to believe that after a decade and a half the original creator gets a chance to go back and redo that region, and they have absolutely zero ideas or desire to change ANYTHING? Not a single thing they'd do even slightly differently? Cuz that's what the clowns who've been spreading this baseless fearmongering are indirectly insinuating.

This is the state of the Pokefandom, and why I'm so annoyed: People have taken the far more illogical and unlikely worst-case scenario over the 4 games of precedent of these remakes always having some sort of spicy additional and changed content, something new to make sure the game aint exactly the same as its original counterpart. The license holders don't have to and shouldn't have to fire on all cylinders with the big new additions in the fuckin reveal trailer because by this point they should be able to take it for granted that people will have basic pattern recognition skills and realize there'll be new stuff like there has been for every remake in the past 18 years. ORAS didnt show off soaring, the Delta Episode or Mirage Islands from trailer 1 and people got this, so shouldn't be a big deal this time, right? But fine, if people are gonna cherry-pick PR jargon and take it at face value, then fuck it, I'll play right along.

I'm sorry if I sound aggressive and impatient, Im just so tired of how whiny this fanbase has become. ILCA please, PLEASE release a new trailer soon to finally kill the "FAITHFUL REMAKE CHIBI GRAPHICS = NO CHANGES LOL GF LAZY EVEN THOUGH THEY ARENT DEVING THE GAME" meme.

I've been concerned about the possibility that they won't implement many of the changes I would personally like to see, but I see where you're coming from. Still, please calm the fuck down. It's not that big of a deal.

Also to be fair, specifically because you *know* how the pokemon fandom reacts, you can also know that getting a new trailer won't matter because the fandom won't be happy either ways.

Trailer shows it's a actual 1:1 remake?
- REEEE GF LAZY JUSTCOPYPASTING NO EFFORT
Trailer shows it's not a 1:1 remake and they implemented QoL or even new features
- REEE ITS ORAS AGAIN THEY RUINED THE MASTERPIECE GEN 4 WAS

You know that's *exactly* what will happen.

I get where you're coming from, I despise the fandom as much as you do, but that is the reality, no matter what they do, GameFreaks and Nintendo can't win.

(Luckily, the actual buyers arent the vocal minority of the internet, so in the end it's just irrelevant background noise)

I mean, you just can't please the crowd, can you?

(The answer was a big fat NO, if that wasn't obvious)
Correct, which is why any company worth their salt tries usually to please the highest possible % of the crowd while also trying to throw bones at the other factions so they at least shut up.

Which, no matter what opinion you or I or anyone can have of GameFreaks, is working pretty damn well for them judging by the sales :P

All they have shown of BDSP is 3D recreations of locations, art, and battles.

The only things they've said has been pushing the nostalgia angle.

What else am I supposed to take from that?

How about we wait until Nintendo's E3 presentation? With how close BDSP's release is, if they're going to tell us anything major about it before it'll likely be at E3. Sure, they could have a Pokemon Direct between then obviously, but they have all the eyes on E3 both Pokemon fans and casuals.

There's also the fact that gamefreak isn't doing this game and they've historically been very protective of their IP even when they directly contract out a company. Where's Shadow Lugia in mainline pokemon? I don't think it's unreasonable or even unrealistic to think the remakes won't change things up all that much.
I feel like Shadow Lugia goes against the case you're trying to make.

I do feel that at the very least, when it comes to sales, BDSP has two distinct audiences it will be able to sell to:

- New kids. People who haven't experienced Sinnoh before so this will be their first formal experience with Sinnoh and its adventure. Namely the kids who got into Pokemon through Sword and Shield will have their first Sinnoh adventure with BDSP.
- Nostalgics. People who grew up with the original Diamond and Pearl but haven't played Pokemon in over a decade, these people will get that nostalgia they're craving and reexperience the thrill and excitement they had when they were kids.

When it comes to that upward trend of each remake selling better than the other though, I think BDSP has a shot though. We all know for a fact that the Switch is a massive success story, and Sword and Shield itself has sold a massive amount, likely having brought in a pretty massive new wave of kids to enjoy Pokemon, well over 20 million. In that sense there's a big audience out there who will get in BDSP, so it has a very good chance of selling super well. Let's Go already sold more than ORAS did, I can imagine BDSP has a chance to beat that when you combine both the new wave of kids who got in and the nostalgics who grew up with DP, there's a sizable amount the game can sell to.

As for changes, right now it's impossible to predict what will happen but time will tell. Aside from the fact that Masuda is involved, the fact of the matter is that you can't really generate hype for remakes merely by claiming it'll be faithful to the original. When you consider past precedent has made it so that remakes add at least some sort of thing to the experience that wasn't in the originals, there's a clear expectation established at this point that a remake ought to add something new to the experience. Even FRLG, which was very faithful to the original in a way that HGSS and ORAS weren't, added a few Johto Pokemon to the game as well as a Sevii Islands quest post-game and partially mid-late game too. BDSP has to have something up its sleeve, it's probably not something super big like what HGSS and ORAS added, but something ought to be there in some form.

All in all, there's gotta be something there. Even if it's not a major change, something new has to be there that we don't know about yet. Maybe something to tie the game in with Legends: Arceus, for that matter: the games are being marketed together really, so I wouldn't be surprised if there's some connection there in some form.

so in shining fates, the same morpeko card with identical stats gets printed twice. I normally don’t have a problem with this, as one of the cards is either a promo, or has different stats and attacks. But here, there’s just two morpekos in the same set, and they’re indentical aside from the artwork.

It also seems really weird that all of the art is for the same form when morpeko's gimmick is that it changes form constantly.
