Choosing Your Online Alias

How did you choose your name? What do you think are good and bad ideas fo names? Not individually, but ideas in general. Do you think that keeping only one name for all the forums you go to helps at all?

I don't know if I have to show you guys which names are really stupid... Aeolus has some listed in the "change your name" thread. Just adding "dark", or "shadow", or "killer" to your name doesn't make you sound cool, indeed it often has the opposite effect. Anime characters aren't good sources for names either, as there's a correlation between nerdiness and anime, and those kinds of names are also extremely common (which is a bad thing in itself, but more importantly, it forces you to add those beautiful numbers to the end of your name).

I think names that tie you down to one franchise/fad or another are a bad idea. For example, if you sign up on a forum where you can't change your name (like Smogon), and you name yourself something like "Marth" (your SSBB Main), your name will lose it's meaning if you change your main, or drop SSBB. Doing something like that is like... getting a tattoo of your girlfriend's name, and then dumping her.

Names from another language can often be cool (in my opinion), as they they have hidden meanings (that curious people can look up, or that others can use as a conversational tool or something). But from experience, don't choose Japanese. While it's a beautiful language, it's often associated with anime, and people who simply add Japanese honorifics to the end of their names thinking it sounds cute or cool.

Honestly, anything that has a backstory to it, or that's some sort of inside joke is a good idea, in my opinion. I guess it doesn't matter all that much, especially for existing members, since the posts define the user, not the name. I do still think that avoiding names like "dark-sasuke" is a good idea, and that people can be spared some prejudice by doing so.

I apologize if I offended anyone with this, I realize that my name is stupid, too. :P And I realize that anime isn't terrible, it's just that it's so often associated with wannabe Japanese preteens.

In conclusion, what do you think about choosing your internet name? Does it matter? Do you change it often? Do you agree with what I've said? Please share your opinions.

I used to get my names from nicknames as a kid or my favorite video game characters (as seen here). I think the true key to choosing a name is knowing yourself and not caring what other people think about it. Of course, adding slicer, killer, etc. just makes you sound like you are nothing special.

Think about what you enjoy, how you grew up or even just start typing letters until you see something you like.

the best usernames are one word, easy to remember, with no association to anything, but also cool in themselves.

For example, my username is the best.

Also avoid numbers (dont pick groudon80)

On a serious note you just want people to remember you and not associate you with something stupid. Its really tough to find a good one usually!

Yeah I always though people that get names from amines are (BAN ME PLEASE). I like my nickname though because I though of it myself and made sure it was original. I'll kill anyone with a name like "Ichigopwns1235"

My real name is Oleksandr, and Olie is my nickname.
Basically as long as you don't have numbers, "noob" or those annoying ~ things, then you have a fine username.

And avoiding 2 worded usernames is also important.
Not vital, but it's nicer too look at.

Like take some Admin's names:
Chaos
Aeolus
Misty
Vineon
Jumpman 16 is an exception though. It's just cool:)

My name means essentially "Old Rule" in French. Not only is it (imo) a cool-sounding name, but it actually reveals a part of my policial feelings (Ancien Regime is the opposite of the French Revolution basically). While it refers to something, it creates intrigue because it's not immediately obvious.

While it's a beautiful language, it's often associated with anime, and people who simply add Japanese honorifics to the end of their names thinking it sounds cute or cool.

Depends on the context. Honestly, if the concept behind the name is good, then it will stand apart from the whole "cookie cutter otaku" thing. It helps if you're somewhat familiar with the language!

Anime names are perfectly okay for, say, alts on Shoddy imo, because it's far easier to change, and it works better in a real time chat environment, which is far more fluid than a forum.

My first name is Justin, and I originally was going to add awesome to it. However, I just shortened it to Justinawe, which I never really noticed it was a pun until people started saying it. I would say I am pretty well known with it though, so I now use it whenever I sign up for something online. :)

not associate you with something stupid.

Urbandictionary definition #5 says otherwise! It's ok jackal, I understand. I will be mature about this.

As for me and how I got 'Junior', it's a long story so just don't worry! (Way before I joined Smogon)

hehe Jackal... nyehehehehe

Is taking your name from a book better or worse than an anime >.>

Agreeing with Jackal. The usernames with one word, no numbers and that are nice and easy to remember are usually the best. Asociations can be positive or negative, so avoiding negative ones (Naruto related, for exmaple) is key. The thing I like most about my username is that it holds more meaning to me (and people who have read the book, for that matter) than most people. It also nice to be able to identify people you have something in common with via username, if you know what I mean.

My favorite console and the games from said console which i still collect, i just choose it years ago and i grow fond of it to the point some people out of the internet calls me "NES".

My username is the best.

Short, can mean lots of things, sounds cool, and easily remembered.

Mine is my name.....twice. So simple yet original since I've managed to choose it on pretty much any website I choose to sign up to.

Feathers McGraw, the villain from Wallace & Gromit: the Wrong Trousers.

Disguised as a chicken.

True evil penguin colours.

Mine is a nickname given to me years ago. The mispelling also comes from the reason I was given this name, I myself am the complete opposite to Gandhi and thus spell it differently, however upon attempting to register to the site Ghandi was already taken by someone who can't spell ¬.¬ So I added 1988 to the end, albeit I wish I didn't now.

I currently have a couple of nicknames across different sites I've been too. Although Ghandi has been my name across all these sites at one stage.

My names actually an insider with a few of my friends that i've just ended up using, and, believe it or not, the numbers are part of the insider. And its also just slightly derived off a foreign language, so it has a bit of everything. :/

FooZee just came to me. That was my XBL name (But as FooZy) And so here it is. Also. All my pokemons names (I have 30 available) have things like Foo or Zee in the mix like say I had a Umbreon. I would name it UmbreZee or FooBreon. I get pretty good ones most of the time. Like FooGar (Gengar) and BlisZee (Blissey) FooMence (Salamence) Pretty good :)

I stole this name from unreal tournament, at least I thought I had, turns out what I thought was "norulz" was actually "rulez", so I took credit for this nickname as my own.

Oh, and for legal issues, ©

Hahaha...my name has 'dark' in it, though it doesn't really have a meaning in this case.

Smogon asked for a username, so I typed in the first thing that came into my head. That's how this nick originated.

Dexterity was my username in another game ( maplestory <<; ) I was a sniper and it's main skill was dexterity so it was kind of cool in that game.

But here I'm not sure if it's that good or not =P but I won't change it cause that might confuse some ppl xD

Also ppl calling me Dex is cool ^^

Mine derives from latin class. 8th grade and all that. We were reandomly picking names and putting latin endings behind them. Hence Tirsus. Still bummed I didn't capitalize the T though.

I got my username from a friend, who obviously couldn't spell "Havoc", when I signed up to the NoE forums back in January 2004. He'd named a wrestler on a wrestling game "Havak" using the create a wrestler feature, and it was just something that sprang to mind when I signed up there.

So I've chosen to spell it like that from then on, and use it on every forum or website I've signed up to. I actually think the word sounds cool though, it's short, easy to remember for most and looks pretty cool too. I like it. :)
