Worst Pokemon Sprites?

Always been fond of how Gligar is somehow a different color in every gen 4 game. Too lazy to check, but whether this was a case of ridiculous carelessness towards its official coloration or a progression of its official coloration that just happens to be perfectly reflected within one generation... still pretty unusual.

I thought for sure the second one HAD to be a shiny sprite, so I checked and no, that's just the color they gave it.

Gligar is weird. It was purple in its first official artwork, but in GSC it's pink... and the anime followed suit.

But once they settled on Gligar being pink... it became purple in-game, until HGSS turned it pink again.

True, the fact that the anime (and I presume other Pokemon media not reusing super crusty GSC art) used the pink makes the fact that it was wrong for such a long time even stranger. Though I also remembered that a similar but not as severe thing can be observed with Grabull:

Here the purple was used for most games past GS, but for some reason they went back to the more pink coloration briefly with HGSS. Something about them and pinkish-purple gen 2 Pokemon...

Mystery Dungeon Charizard is too red
Which is odd cuz noticeably a good chunk of sprites are based on Stadium-Colosseum anims, and Charizard is DEFINITELY orange there
Dragonite has a similar issue. It's weirdly brown in MD

Ever wonder why the Gen 1 sprite for Kakuna had arms?
Here's the sprite

Now here's its 1995 Cardass art Ken Sugimori did

It seems that he was intended to have movable arms at one point. Unfortunately, similar to Charmander's back spike, this never made it in the anime, which then became the norm for 3D reference and art after Gen 3
What about Pikachu and his thin tail and spot?

Pikachu was one of the last mon designs finalized. The mid 1995 Webpage art and New Years art Late 1995 shows this (and Red's mother)

Though it's iffy his yellow fur is swapped the white belly for the sprite, it seems like they ran out of time to update the sprite to Green/Red's finalized art

The old console models are generally pretty good for gens 3 and 4, but some of the older ones are up there with the worst 2D sprites the series has had-

Yuck.
to this day i do not understand why they decided to portray crobat as...that

I saw that it's been mentioned in the thread before but that was 4 years ago and I'm still upset that they did this, especially because they nailed Wooper's model.

Okay, Quagsire is supposed to be.. dopey. It's a dopey blobby blob of blobby..blobness, sure.

But in the past, and even in it's original art it had character whilst retaining that derpy blobby boi image.

I'm pretty sure it's the lack of it's goofy smile and the general build of it's head. Maybe if they gave it more of the derpy smile that it should have it might fix a lot of the problem I have with it? I dunno, all I know is they messed it's face up. I do enjoy it's opening mouth animation. So that's one plus for it, I guess.
But it's also just so... inanimate. Despite being an unaware blob, Quagsire has always been well animated to give it a more quirky and derpy personality. I wouldn't say it's the best, but the old 3D model they had for Stadium 2/Colosseum/PBR better, though it had kind of.. silly animations for it's attacks.

Quagsire is one of my favourites. Look what they did to my boi. ;w;

Kanga Is simply low poly
Venu bloodshot eyes is weird, but not permanent. It's only when very damaged,or doing major blasts
Crobat though....yikes

I can’t find a good gif of Kangaskhan, but i remember seeing it in stadium and its tongue is always waving around outside of its mouth... really odd.

And for some reason, while certain gen 1 models look way better in battle revolution (Machamp) Kang is still morbidly chonky.

In fairness, bite/poison fang/leech life was a noticable chunk of the bats' movepool, and crobat's normal pose doesn't really lend itself to that. It probably would have looked better if the model was made for gen 4+ when cross poison/air slash/ etc. became available.

There's really no reason to interpret Crobat's teeth as 3 weird buck teeth, though. Fangs would work just as well. Stadium 1 & 2 models had a number of weird "jokes" like that, like how Jynx's hair is a wig and swirls around on a physical attack. You can definitely tell that era was one where there probably wasn't a firm series bible/guidelines to follow

With PBR I suspect they intended to update all the gen 1 (& maybe gen 2?) models but time got in the way. The initial pitch teaser was clearly shooting for the moon .iirc the localized version touched up a few extra models, even.

I do remember one advertised feature of PBR that never made it into the game was the environment retaining any damage done to it during battle (like the ground being broken apart if Earthquake was used). So I wouldn't put it pass that they intended to update most if not all Pokemon models but had to settle with just updating the textures due to time restraint.

I mean again just look at that initial teaser trailer again
The lighting is a lot more ambitious
The physical attacks went all in on it
Permanent lingering environmental damage
physics!
Deoxys' faint animation is super elaborate now

now, honestly, I do think getting this all on the wii would be a bit overly ambitious to the poitn where most of this was just bullshots as a concept trailer to show what they want to do, but I do think they definitely had a lot more planned that a rushed development on a fairly weak console just could not meet. If it had another year in the oven, it might've at least redone all the old models and maybe spruced up the animations more, I think.

Kangaskhan looks way too floaty and cartoony for me, but that's mostly stadium having very hammy animations to be entertaining. The fact that only some pokemon like Charizard and Machamp get touched up models while Kangaskhan and the Nidos stay low-poly is way worst than anything Swsh did in comparison.

Yeah about that
This is clearly false CG advertisement. No way the Wii could handle this. It was done to generate false hype

Certainly the wii couldn’t handle that level of visual polish- however, that doesn’t mean the background effects and even more extensive animations couldn’t have come to pass with more time in the oven.

The way they subdivided models was really poor. Mewtwo in particular got redone proportions despite reusing anims, and it looks too stilted. The missing eye textures and removed detail in body textures doesn't help, nor are most Gen 4 Poke anims
BR is meh to me

I can understand not being a big BR fan, especially since it severely cuts down on the amount of single-player content from previous entries. But between the stadiums themselves still looking really good and generally great music, it's still probably my favorite of the console games just because of how well it worked for enhancing the Pokemon battling experience from the cartridges.
