Why are some pokemon recommended to have 0 attack IVs?

Sorry if this is the wrong place to ask this, I'm new here. I keep seeing IV's being recommended to be at 0 on some pokemon, why is that?

To reduce damage from Foul Play. Also to reduce friction allowing them to slide along the ground as it were ice.
It also reduces the damage you'd take if you hurt yourself during Confusion... although that doesn't come up nearly as often as those other two.

Also, I'm pretty sure this would go in an SQ/SA* thread relating to an SV metagame. Do correct me if I'm wrong, though.

it's really just to drop foul play damage. whether it's worth the effort depends how much foul play is used in the tier, so something like gen 9 ou it wouldn't be worth going out of the way to run 0 atk iv's on your special attackers, whereas in ubers or uu where foul play is really common it's pretty much a necessity.

iirc showdown does it for you automatically if you don't run any physical attacks on your mon

I also noticed in every screenshot you included the EVs only total 508, not 510. Weird.
Game Freak, in their infinite wisdom, made EVs only divisible by 4 at level 100 - as in, for each four EVs in a stat, it goes up by one point. They made the total EVs 510 but the functional limit is 508, usually split like 252/252/4 or 248/252/8, etc.

Wow, so this has been a thing since Gen 3??? They should remove the extra 2 unless I am missing some obvious consequence.

the real reason is to weaken your mons physically to prevent them from breaking out of your computer and escape into the real world. this is why certain arbiters of chaos run 31 attack EV's on their special attackers to perhaps make this happen, and why raging bolt is so dangerous (his attack ev's are capped at 20).

physical attackers can break out pretty much whenever but they don't because they're chill like that

If you're not running any special attacks, you should also have 0 SpA IVs. This was traditionally just in case the opponent has Power Split so you can reduce their special attack more, but has recently become relevant in VGC because you don't want Tera Blast to become special if your mon has had its attack reduced by Intimidate or suchlike.

Sorry if this is the wrong place to ask this,
generally smogoff is only for completely off topic stuff, unrelated to pokemon. there are "simple question" threads scattered around the parts of smogon that do talk about competitive battling, and those are meant for stuff like this. i'd recommend asking here or in the thread for the specific metagame you're interested in.

because smogoff isn't meant for competitive pokemon stuff, and it seems like this thread is being used for competitive pokemon discussion, i'm going to throw a lock on it.

p.s. the only type of "IV" i've heard of is the drip that my doctor put me on when I told him that the last time i drank a glass of water was 2008. i've been pepsi only since then and i add my own aspartame to make it even sweeter
