[OVERVIEW]

Whimsicott's unique Grass / Fairy typing provides it with resistances to common attacking types such as Water, Ground, Fighting, and Dragon. The ability to switch into common threats like Keldeo without being weak to Pursuit, unlike Celeb, carves it a definable niche in tandem with Prankster and an absolutely stunning supportive movepool with gems such as Taunt, Encore, Tailwind, Memento, and Light Screen. With access to priority Stun Spore, it can cripple a wide array of Pokemon, particularly weather sweepers such as Kingdra and Excadrill. In addition, access to U-turn in tandem with Encore makes Whimsicott's ability to catch momentum and create free turns incomparably useful. However, Whimsicott is unable to make use of its good base Speed due to having to invest in its average bulk to take hits well, though Prankster mitigates this for its support moves. It also lacks any sort of reliable recovery, with the closest thing being Leech Seed. Despite having a decent offensive movepool, Whimsicott's low attacking stats prevent it from doing much damage and leave it walled by many defensive Pokemon in the tier.

Moves
========

U-turn grabs useful momentum after Whimsicott switches into a Pokemon it checks or counters, such as Keldeo or Breloom. Encore pairs well with U-turn to disrupt the foe by locking it into a status move or a resisted attack and subsequently making it setup bait. Whimsicott also is able to check many dangerous setup sweepers such as Mega Gyarados, Mega Altaria, and Manaphy by locking them into their respective setup move. Moonblast deals some solid damage to Fighting-, Dark-, and Dragon-types such as Terrakion, Mega Sableye, and Garchomp. Stun Spore is useful to cripple anything that isn't a Grass- or Electric-type and doesn't have Overcoat, which makes Whimsicott a very solid check to sweepers that have already set up and can ravage your team such as Mega Charizard X. Alternatively, the move can simply be used to paralyze faster Pokemon in general, neutering the threat of Pokemon such as Kingdra and Excadrill under their respective weathers, as well as speedy threats such as Mega Alakazam and Mega Lopunny.

Set Details
========

Maximum investment in Whimsicott's HP and Defense allows it to pivot into physical attacks and resisted hits as often as possible. Leftovers is important, as Whimsicott lacks any recovery outside of Leech Seed, so the passive healing is necessary. Prankster is crucial as well because Whimsicott cannot disrupt or cripple any setup sweepers without the priority that Prankster grants to status moves.

Usage Tips
========

Whimsicott should be used to switch into boosting sweepers or common Pokemon it checks such as Breloom and grab momentum or disrupt them with U-turn or Encore, respectively. If you rely on Whimsicott to check a Pokemon late-game, it's best to try to keep Whimsicott healthy and play more conservatively with it. Moonblast should be used to pick off weakened Pokemon or if the foe is locked into an unfavorable move but doesn't switch out, such as Breloom locked into Rock Tomb. If you can afford to predict the opponent's reaction to one of Whimsicott's moves, such as switching out on a predicted Encore or Stun Spore, Whimsicott should simply use U-turn to gain momentum. However, if it cannot afford to do so, it must use the appropriate move to shut down the foe, especially if the consequence for mispredicting is a lost game.

Team Options
========

Pokemon that can weaken Steel-types such as Ferrothorn and Scizor are very useful, as Whimsicott often struggles against them. Heatran is a good teammate because it has great type synergy with Whimsicott, taking out Grass- and Steel-types while Whimsicott prevents Water-types such as Slowbro, Gyarados, and Suicune from setting up on Heatran by switching in and using Encore. Magnezone and Magneton are good options to eliminate Steel-types with Magnet Pull, with Magneton also being able to outspeed Talonflame, Weavile, and Tornadus-T if using a Choice Scarf. If using Stun Spore, Pokemon such as Mega Charizard X fare well as partners, as they often have trouble against weather sweepers and appreciate Whimsicott crippling their checks with paralysis. Other sweepers such as Mega Lopunny and Weavile appreciate Choice Scarf users and extremely fast Pokemon such as Mega Aerodactyl being paralyzed. Terrakion, Keldeo, and Garchomp are all good partners that take on Whimsicott's checks and counters that have advantageous typing over it, such as Poison-, Fire-, and Steel-types. Garchomp in particular checks Talonflame and Mega Scizor, two Pokemon that have powerful priority attacks that will end Whimsicott. Fire- and Flying-types are generally good partners to take down Grass-types that Whimsicott has trouble beating, so Pokemon such as Talonflame and Mega Charizard Y pair well with it, and they also appreciate the free turns provided by Encore. Finally, entry hazard setters that can set up Spikes and Stealth Rock work well, as Whimsicott forces many switches.

[STRATEGY COMMENTS]
Other Options
=============

Memento can grant a teammate a virtually free setup opportunity that possibly lasts for more than one turn and can often lead to a clean sweep if the conditions are correct. A Substitute + Leech Seed set works well with Prankster, setting up Substitutes on resisted attacks, status moves from foes locked into Encore, or predicted switches and then using Leech Seed to replenish the lost health. However, being useless against common Grass-types makes this set fairly inconsistent. An offensive set with Life Orb and Moonblast, Giga Drain, and either Tailwind or Memento could work to pressure Pokemon such as Raikou or Manaphy much more, and Whimsicott's good Speed and access to Prankster come in handy against these threats. Whimsicott's general inability to muscle past its already too-common counters can make this an unappealing option, though. Grass Whistle is an interesting move that puts the foe to sleep and can work well with Prankster, but its horrible accuracy can prove costly. Finally, Whimsicott can use Switcheroo with an item that can cripple the foe, such as Lagging Tail. This not only allows Whimsicott to completely nullify faster threats such as Alakazam but also makes Whimsicott's U-turn move last uses as long as it hasn't used Switcheroo, which is perfect for scouting the opponent's action.

Checks and Counters
===================

**Grass-types**: Pokemon such as Amoonguss, Mega Venusaur, and Ferrothorn are immune to Stun Spore and resist Whimsicott's STAB moves, and they can KO it back with their own respective Poison- and Steel-type STAB moves.

**Steel-types**: Steel-types such as Heatran and Scizor dislike Stun Spore; however they resist Whimsicott's STAB moves and KO it back with their own STAB moves. Ferrothorn is immune to Stun Spore, and the most it fears is being locked into Leech Seed or an entry hazard such as Spikes or Stealth Rock. Magnezone and Magneton are immune to paralysis and can KO Whimsicott with a STAB-boosted Flash Cannon.

**Fire-types**: Fire-types such as Talonflame and Mega Charizard Y dislike paralysis, but they take paltry damage from Whimsicott's STAB moves and OHKO it with their own STAB moves.

**Electric-types**: Electric-types are immune to Stun Spore, so Pokemon like Raikou, Mega Manectric, and Thundurus can deal significant damage to Whimsicott with their super effective coverage moves, while taking little damage from Whimsicott's attacks.

**Faster Priority Attackers**: Faster priority moves from Pokemon such as Weavile, Talonflame, and Mega Scizor are capable of easily KOing Whimsicott after minimal prior damage.

A quick comment but what is the appeal of focus sash. Where does it legitimately mandate itself as a good team option? If you want my two cents the only set I would considering using is pivot (which I personally should think it would have max speed and max spatk if using moonblast) and sub seed which I feel should have enough speed to outpace base 80s or at least a mention in set details. Getting an encore in or a leech seed on something like mamoswine is a big momentum grabber from the time i used it so those are some things I would consider. I havent been able to thoroughly read it since Im out but i think lagging tail is bad and should go to Oo if it is mentioned to have a set in general.

I took the sets from Tressed's QC, and redid the skeleton, so I'll take off the Focus Sash set. I'll change the SubSeed EVs to one that can outpace base 80s, and I took the lagging tail thing off because it didn't really seem too practical, and I'll put a mention in OO.

On that note, would Iron Ball be something else to use over Lagging Tail? It halves the opponents Speed but also comes with the neat side effect of removing any Flying-type immunities, so idk if it's relevant as the the opponent's always going to be at -2 Speed and while the Lagging Tail makes one always go last, the Iron Ball can generally produce a similar effect considering any Pokemon that's at 50% Speed is pretty much outsped by everything.

Thank you very much!

I'd rather just use Stun Spore and have a ton more utility against more stuff. If Whimsicott isn't Subseed I see 0 reason why you wouldn't use Stun Spore. For example you can paralyze Excadrill and turn it more or less into fodder or stuff like Scarf / Rock Polish Lando-T. I think Stun Spores applications is much more useful than a very niche option in Iron Ball that practically wastes a moveslot, Switcheroo, and Item. Take that as you will.

Needs a ton of more checks and counters and Pivot section the move 3 section has too many slashes to me personally. Stun Spore I personally think is mandatory on its pivot set and there was never a time where I used it where I thought it was a good idea to not implement it.

name: Pivot
move 1: U-turn
move 2: Encore
move 3: Moonblast
move 4: Stun Spore

This is pretty much the set I use all the time in regards to pivot set. I would also stick with Bold nature btw, granted I use the speed and spatk variant, and I think having Fairy STAB is important on the pivot set because you need a realistic way to threaten stuff Keldeo to begin with. Specs Keldeo hurts and you don't want to find yourself in a position where your most threatening move is...U-Turn. QC can decide on what slashes go best with Stun Spore but if I had to take a guess I'd put Taunt in move details high priority, Memento perhaps a slash where Stun Spore is, and Tailwind maybe high priority move details or slashed after Stun Spore.

Hey there you might want to add Coba berry as a potential item on the first set. It weakens flying type moves which is pretty awesome for this Whimsicott set, because it can prepare a sweep for a teammember like this.

Whimsicott is a really nice offensive pivot to use with Giga Drain / Moonblast / Encore / Stun Spore and Life Orb, the extra power from LO lets it OHKO mons such as Starmie, Keldeo, Gallade, Atlaria, and Offensive Garchomp. There are probably plenty of other examples, but it's a pretty good set that I've used for a little while. I think there should be a mention for it in OO at the very least

Hi! Make sure to give Sunny Day a mention as U-Turn+Prankster makes Whimsicott pretty damn good as a secondary weather setter for said teams. Just my two cents.

Alrite, I got to this!
[OVERVIEW]

  • Unique typing in Grass/Fairy that lets it check Keldeo, Mega Gyarados, Breloom, and Rotom-W
  • Prankster + a wide array of support moves give it a load of utility, from Taunt, Encore, Leech Seed
  • U-turn allows it to gain momentum and works well in tandem with Encore
  • Good speed but unable to make much use of it due to Prankster and the fact that it needs to invest in bulk to compensate for merely average bulk
  • Lack of recovery outside of Lefties and Leech Seed
  • Weak offensive stats prevent it from utilizing its decent offensive movepool outside of Moonblast
Whimsicott is actually 2HKOed by Specs Hydro Pump, making it a less than decent check, especially since neither of its sets can outspeed and threaten Keldeo besides Paralysis. I would talk about its unique typing but instead say it lacks a weakness to Pursuit unlike its rival Grass-type support 'Mon Celebi, and gives it key resistances/immunities to Water-, Ground-, and Dragon-type moves, which in tandem with Prankster allows it to act as a solid weather sweeper check on more offensively-paced teams, especially since Stun Spore doesn't discriminate against Ground-types like Mega Swampert and Excadrill. I'm just hesitant to say it checks these 'Mons because doesn't really come out of any encounter alive, besides Breloom and Rotom-W, which almost all Grass-types can beat 1v1. I'd also list Encore/Tailwind/Memento/Screens as the Prankster support moves, since those give Whimsicott its niche.
All of this can be shortened into something like "it has a wide move pool with both supporting and attacking options, but lacks the defensive and offensive stats to utilize them to high degrees of success". You can also throw in the speed issue here as well.
It's important to drop the word "reliable" (as in reliable recovery) here. Also, I'd take out Leech Seed because I think the set should go as a whole and be moved to OO, no matter how situationally annoying it can be.

Onto the pivot set -

Contrary to what Steve said, remove Coba Berry. Its utility is insanely niche and definitely not worth losing Leftovers recovery for. Against Talonflame, the player typically has better things to be doing than sacking Cott to get paralysis on something that's main STAB is priority, not to mention that standard SD Talon OHKOs Whimsicott through Coba at +2 regardless, assuming SR damage.

Scrap mentions/slashes of Memento, Tailwind, and Taunt. The first two options are much better suited for offensive LO sets or set-up sweeper support (I find Tailwind only works really well w/ Memento on the same set anyway, since it's Whimsicott's only way to give free turns to various glass cannons), while the majority of Taunt's targets can either greatly threaten Whimsicott (think Ferrothorn, Heatran, and Skarmory) or are adequately handled by Encore (bulky set-up sweepers). Being such a niche Pokemon to begin with, Whimsicott absolutely needs priority Encore and Stun Spore to stand out, as well as the obligatory STAB in Moonblast, leaving it with very little space for other options, so it's always better to keep the set details of such niche Pokemon simple.

In Set Details, remove these:
  • An alternate spread of 4 Def / 252 SpA / 252 Spe with a Timid nature can be used if utilizing Moonblast to outspeed all base 115 Speed Pokemon and deal decent damage with it
  • Coba Berry can also be used to survive a priority Flying-type attack such as that from Mega Pinsir, allowing Whimsicott to successfully paralyze the opponent with Stun Spore, or ready a sweeper with Memento or Tailwind
  • Should run Bold if using Moonblast as the main attacking move
Outspeeding things to hit w/ a low-power Moonblast isn't amazingly relevant, especially if you're giving up on important bulk, seeing as Whimsicott is treated as a somewhat defensive pivot/support 'Mon and has no reliable recovery. It would only be relevant if you were using Giga Drain for blanket coverage on 'Mons like Starmie/Keld/Terrak, but that's reducing this set's already small niche, so you should take it out completely. Coba Berry has already been covered, and the last part isn't necessary (at the very least, you could say "it minimizes confusion/foul play damage" but it's better to keep it short and sweet)

In Team Options, give priority to Pokemon who can beat the Steel-types (especially Ferrothorn) that Whimsicott hates. Heatran is a good partner, as it can beat all of these Pokemon besides (usually) opposing Heatran, while also providing residual damage on the opponent with Toxic/Burn damage and SR. It can check Talonflame, Charizard-X, Venusaur, and various other threats to Whimsicott, while appreciating Whimsicott's ability to soft-check and/or paralyze Rain sweepers, Excadrill, Rotom-W, etc., and Encore-lock and force out bulky set-up sweepers like Suicune in tandem with Heatran's status.

I also think you should take out these two points:
  • Pokemon such as Rotom-W and Landorus-T work well with Whimsicott, as they are able to form VoltTurn cores with it and continually gain momentum and resisting some of its weaknesses in the process
  • When running Tailwind, extremely powerful Pokemon that are often held back by their speed such as Mega-Gardevoir, Mega Heracross, and Mega Medicham are good partners to completely destroy faster teams
I don't think Whimsicott's place is on Volt-Turn cores seeing as it doesn't add much in terms of bulk nor does it add much in terms of offensive presence. I feel that Whimsicott is a Pokemon that needs to be paired with Pokemon that can actively do stuff, since pivot Landorus-T and Rotom-W also lack the presence to actually break things that Whimsicott has Encore-locked or paralyzed. Tailwind is pretty self-explanatory and doesn't need a line explaining it.

Now I'd also say SubSeed should be moved to OO. I've talked w/ the QC members and all of us believe the analysis of a niche 'Mon like Whimsicott should be kept short and concise, and although SubSeed can be situationally useful, the lack of the fast paralysis and low general bulk take away too much from an already small amount of utility (even the full defensive set already has issues taking various attacks. As a side note, outspeeding Mamoswine doesn't really do much unless you like, Sub on a 10% LO Mamo's Ice Shard or something. I will admit that SubSeed can be a very annoying set to face, but it just doesn't grab enough utility on a ton of teams, and doesn't carve a spot for itself on the large majority of builds, since it is a supporting Pokemon trying to pull off a stand-alone set.

OO should look like:
  • Dual Screens + Memento
  • SubSeed
  • Offensive LO with Moonblast + Giga Drain + Tailwind / Memento
  • Grasswhistle
  • Switcheroo + Lagging Tail

I would give a mention of Electric-types in C&C. Pokemon like AV Raikou, Thundurus, and Manectric fear little from Whimsicott's weak attacks and can't be paralyzed, and can all threaten Whimsicott back with HP Ice or Fire coverage.

Imo, it should look like:

Grass-types: aren't affected by any of Whimsicott's common attacks - Ferrothorn/Mega Venusaur/Amoonguss/Tangrowth
Steel-types: aren't affected by any of Whimsicott's common attacks, can easily KO Whimsicott, but dislike being paralyzed - Skarm/Heatran/Scizor
Fire-types: hate being paralyzed but can easily KO Whimsicott while fearing little in return - Zards/Talonflame
Residual Damage
Electric-types

Super Effective attacks can be taken off; it's pretty self explanatory, as well as Taunt users, which isn't /too/ relevant as the stuff Whimsicott wants to Encore/Stun Spore won't carry Taunt and the stuff that does carry Taunt Whimsicott won't really want to do much to anyway (Heatran, Skarm, Thundurus, etc.)

After all of that, QC 1/3
Watermelon_by_shirokuro_chan.png

Residual damage is a weird thing to put as checks and counters because almost every Pokemon in the game more or less is hindered by these. I would remove that personally.

After that seems ok, I don't really agree with Offensive LO being a thing for OO as Tokyo Tom explained up above considering it's important for being a utility mon but his QC is way more in depth than mine would be lol and has mostly everything regardless.

QC 2/3

This has been updated. Due to a computer failure I might take a bit of time to write this up but I'll be as swift as I can.

When you mention Grass Whistle in OO, make sure to also give Sleep Powder a mention as it sacrifices the ability to hit through subs/hit Grass-types for semi-consistent accuracy.

Whimsicott does not learn sleep powder
Oh my bad. I must have been getting it mixed up with something else.

So this post isn't wasted, Whimsi is pretty good on CharY+Venusaur teams in one of the filler slots due to its ability to both support them with U-Turn/Memento and get up a last ditch Sunny Day for Venusaur to use. Additionally, it is a good candidate for weather-shutter-downr due to Sunny Day+Prankster allowing it to prematurely stop a Kabu/Exca/whatever sweep. Therefore, I suggest giving Sunny Day an OO mention.

Pivot

Moves
Flip Breloom and Keldeo here, it just makes more sense as it can only check Keldeo but counters Breloom.
Reorder Terrakion, Garchomp, and Mega Sab for their respective types, it just reads better and makes more sense

Set Details
Remove the part about 4 SpD EVs, it's 1 point, it doesn't make a difference
Mention a little about Moonblast and when you would use it, just say that it can pick off weakened mons weak to Fairy type moves when you don't expect your opponent to switch or use a move thats easily taken advantage of, ie Breloom using Rock Tomb. I just feel that it even a little sentence is necessary considering the move is on the set.

Team Options
Mention some offensive stuff like Mega Lopunny, Weavile, and Keldeo that like having faster checks shut down, those faster checks being the likes of Mega Zam, MAero, and scarfers etc.
Mention Fire types and Flying types in general because Grass types are insanely annoying for Whimsi and having something to beat them is really useful, while stuff like Zard X and Talon love having free turns provided from Encore
I suppose you can mention Garchomp because its Garchomp and it shuts down annoying priority from the likes of Scizor and Talonflame

C&C
For Grass-types mention that Venusaur, Amoonguss, and Ferrothorn can KO back with their respective Poison- and Steel-type STAB moves
Mention Ferro in Steel-types too + it doesn't care about Stun Spore and the worst it has to fear is being encored into Leech Seed or entry hazards
For Electrics, just say "super effective coverage" over "fire and ice"
I think faster priority deserves a mention here, there's not exactly a lot in the tier with it, but Talon is capable of OHKOing, Weavile, Jolly Mega Scizor, and Mamoswine take a good 50% off meaning that weakened Whimsicotts just die to them pretty much

But yeah I think Tokyo Tom really covered everything with his check a while ago, all it needs is a few little additions especially in TO. QC 3/3

Would also recommend adding magnezone to both c&c (cant be para, has se STAB) and team options (traps Scizor, Ferro and sorta checks stuff like Gengar). Magneton mentionable as well for checking Talon, Torn, Weavile and of course add Gengar to checks and counters

Whimsicott's impressive movepool allows it to run some other sets, such as a set utilizing Dual Screens + Memento which allows can grant a teammate a virtually free setup, (RC) opportunity that possibly lasts for more than one turn, (C) and can often lead to a clean sweep if the conditions are correct. Whimsicott's overall weakness and general inability to muscle past its already too-common counters can make this an unappealing option, (AC) though. Grasswhistle Whistle is an interesting move that puts the opponent foe to Sleep sleep and can work well with Prankster, but its horrible inaccuracy can be too prove costly. **Grass-types**: Pokemon such as Amoonguss, Mega Venusaur, and Ferrothorn are immune to Stun Spore and resist Whimsicott's Grass and Fairy STAB moves, all while and acn KOing it back with their own respective Poison- and Steel-type STAB moves.

**Steel-types**: Steel-types such as Heatran and Scizor dislike Stun Spore; however they resist Whimsicott's STAB moves and KO it back with their own Steel-type STAB moves. Ferrothorn is immune to Stun Spore, (AC) and the worst most it fears is being Encored locked into Leech Seed or an entry hazard such as Spikes or Stealth Rock. Magnezone and Magneton are immune to paralysis and can KO Whimsicott with a STAB-boosted Flash Cannon.

**Fire-types**: Fire-types such as Talonflame and Mega Charizard Y dislike paralysis, but they take paltry damage from Whimsicott's STAB moves and OHKO it with their Fire-type own STAB moves.

**Electric-types**: Electric-types are immune to Stun Spore, meaning so Pokemon like Raikou, Mega Manectric, and Thundurus can deal significant damage to Whimsicott with their super effective coverage moves, all while not taking much little damage from Whimsicott's attacks.

**Faster Priority Attackers**: Faster priority moves from Pokemon such as Weavile, Talonflame, and Mega Scizor are capable of easily KOing Whimsicott after minimal prior damage.

"Whimsicott's impressive movepool allows it to run some other sets, such as a set utilizing Dual Screens"

Remove Dual Screens when you implement Snobalts check because Whimsicott only learns Light Screen and not Reflect, just make it Memento
