Volcanion
QC: Finchinator / PK Gaming / p2
GP: Kris
[OVERVIEW]

* Volcanion is blessed with a great typing that allows it to check Genesect, Mega Scizor, Heatran, Celesteela, Magearna, and Kartana.
* Its signature move Steam Eruption is stupidly powerful with a nifty burn chance.
* Volcanion has solid bulk and Water Absorb to discourage Water-type attacks, namely Scald.
* It is rather slow at base 70 Speed, which leaves it outpaced by threats such as Pheromosa, Latios, and Mega Gyarados, but is fast enough to get the jump on common defensive Pokemon such as Clefable and Skarmory.
* It has common weaknesses to common types in Ground, Electric, and Rock, but it has valuable resistances to Fire, Fairy, and Steel.

[SET]
name: All-out Attacker
move 1: Steam Eruption
move 2: Fire Blast / Flamethrower
move 3: Sludge Bomb
move 4: Hidden Power Electric / Hidden Power Grass

[SET COMMENTS]
Moves
========

* Steam Eruption is an incredibly powerful STAB move that has no drawbacks bar slightly imperfect accuracy.
* Fire Blast is a similarly powerful STAB move with excellent coverage alongside Steam Eruption.
* Flamethrower is a more accurate option over Fire Blast, but it fails to guarantee certain OHKOes.
* Sludge Bomb hits Azumarill, Tapu Fini, and Primarina for heavy damage.
* Hidden Power Electric is mainly for the Choice Specs variants, as it gives Volcanion a way to hit bulky Water-types such as Suicune, Toxapex, and Mantine.
* Hidden Power Grass still hits bulky Water-types, but instead targets Gastrodon and Seismitoad instead of Mantine and Pelipper.
* Toxic can be used on non-Choice Specs sets to target all bulky Water-types with the exception of Toxapex and weaken other Pokemon that resist Water- and Fire-type moves such as Latios and Latias.
* Earth Power is an option to hit Volcanion and Toxapex much harder.

Set Details
========

* Maximum Special Attack investment allows Volcanion to hit as hard as possible.
* Maximum Speed investment allows it to outrun every Pokemon up to opposing base 70 Speed threats.
* Modest provides a significant boost in power while Timid allows it to Speed tie with other positive-natured base 70s and outspeed Timid Magearna and Adamant Mega Scizor.
* Choice Specs amps Volcanion's power to ridiculous levels to the point where it can 2HKO frailer Pokemon that resist Water-type moves such as Keldeo, Latios, and Pelipper after Stealth Rock.
* Leftovers is an option when using Toxic to provide longevity that Volcanion lacks.

Usage Tips
========

* It's best to use Volcanion as an early-game wallbreaker that softens up the opposition for a sweeper later on in the match.
* Use Steam Eruption most of the time, since it's powerful and spammable; although be wary of other Water Absorb users.
* VoltTurn support is nice due to its low speed to get it into play.
* Hidden Power Electric and Hidden Power Grass should only be used to pick off weakened bulky Water-types and never as a main attacking option.
* When using Toxic, Steam Eruption becomes a bit trickier to use, as it may burn something you want to poison.

Team Options
========

* Tapu Koko, Genesect, Mega Scizor, Landorus-T, and Pheromosa all pair well with Volcanion, as it appreciates the VoltTurn support they provide. Landorus-T also sets Stealth Rock as well, which assists in securing more KO's.
* Tyranitar pairs excellently with Volcanion for its ability to trap Volcanion's checks such as Latios, Latias, Slowking, and Slowbro.
* Latios and Latias are great partners, since they check Electric-types while also removing hazards.
* Grass- and Electric-types such as Tapu Bulu and Xurkitree pair well with it as they break down the bulky Water-types that it struggles with.
* It pairs nicely with Pokemon that appreciate its wallbreaking prowess such as, Zygarde, Zygarde-10%, Mimikyu, and other setup sweepers.

[STRATEGY COMMENTS]
Other Options
=============

* Grassium Z + Solar Beam gives Volcanion a one-time powerful Grass-type attack to lure in bulky Water-types such as Suicune and Rotom-W.
* Type-resist Berries such as Wacan Berry, Charti Berry, and Shuca Berry are nice for allowing Volcanion to function as a lure.
* A bulkier, defensive variant could work to utilize Volcanion's bulk and defensive qualities.
* A Choice Scarf can bring a surprise factor and allows Volcanion to function as a revenge killer.
* Expert Belt allows Volcanion to possibly bluff a Choice Specs set or other items with no indication of their use.
* Flame Charge can be used to patch up Volcanion's low Speed, but Volcanion has a hard time finding room to use it.

Checks and Counters
===================

**Bulky Water-types**: Bulky Water-types such as Suicune, Toxapex, Gastrodon, and Mantine are all excellent checks to Volcanion, and the latter two of which are immune to Steam Eruption. However, all but Toxapex must be wary of Toxic and Hidden Power Grass or Bloom Boom, and in Mantine's case, Hidden Power Electric. Volcanion also serves as an excellent check to opposing Volcanion, but it takes heavy damage from Sludge Bomb and Hidden Power Electric.

**Dragon-types:** Latias and Latios are able to comfortably switch into all of Volcanion's attacks and threaten to KO it with Draco Meteor or the uncommon Thunderbolt. Dragonite and Kommo-o can switch into its STAB moves and set up with Dragon Dance or fire off a powerful attack.

**Ground-types**: Ground-types such as Excadrill, Garchomp, and Landorus-T outspeed and KO Volcanion with their Ground-type STAB moves.

**Rock-types**: Rock-types such as Nihilego and Mega Aerodactyl are able to outspeed and heavily damage Volcanion with their super effective Rock-type STAB moves.

**Electric-types**: Tapu Koko, Xurkitree, and Thundurus are examples of Electric-types that are able to outspeed and OHKO Volcanion with their Electric-type STAB moves.

**Specially Bulky Pokemon**: Specially bulky Pokemon such as Chansey and Blissey are able to easily come into all of Volcanion's attacks with ease, except for Toxic.

I feel like you should slash Earth Power on the Fourth moveslot of the All-Out Attacker Set, it can help against opposing Volcanion and might possibly be the best option to lock yourself into

Modest is the superior ability, imo. There aren't many notable Pokemon worth outrunning in the 70 base Speed tier (besides Breloom, who is currently uncommon), and Modest lets you do ridiculous damage with Steam Eruption (doing around 40% to Toxapex)

I've been using 76 HP / 252 SpA / 180 Speed with a Modest nature, and it's been serving me well so far. 180 Speed outruns min Speed Landorus-T which is pretty much all you need atm.

  • Steam Eruption is incredibly powerful STAB that has no drawbacks

I'd say its imperfect is a drawback imo. A small one, but definitely one worth considering.

In the usage tips section, i'd point out that Hidden Power Electric is pretty much only there to snipe Mantine / weakened Water-types. It's a terrible, terrible type to lock yourself into but if you make an aggressive play and take out their Water-type resist, you can really change the tide of battle

In the team options section, Bulky Spinner Excadrill needs a mention. It can take on Electric-types and Rock-types that threaten Volcanion, in addition to providing Rapid Spin support. Volcanion can wreck most of Excadrill's checks in return. Kartana can't be relied on to deal with Water-types since its ultra low SpD coupled with the burn chance from Scald makes it a poor switch in for most of them. I'd remove it. Add Landorus-T in the U-turn section (it provides rocks too)

In the counters section, i'd remove Seismitoed (it's irrelevant) and mention Mantine, though point out that it's vulnerable to HP Electric. You should also add Dragon- and Electric-types as checks as well. Also, replace Solarbeam with Bloom Doom.

did these expect I made modest the primary nature but slashed timid, kept the ev spread at max / max, and kartana was never mentioned to beat grass-types

Sorry I meant water-types (I mean I did mention Scald :x). In any case, this:

  • Grass- and Electric-types such as Kartana and Xurkitree pair well with it as they break down bulky Water-types

Isn't necessarily accurate as Kartana is a bad switch into most water-types.

you slash Flamethrower but don't mention it. Accuracy missed KOs etc.
For usage tips if you have Toxic, Steam Eruption may not be as spammable because burning something you want to Toxic is annoying due to burn's weak DoT. More relevant against defensive teams that hate Toxic

Are you actually running Volcanion? Find it incredible that there's no discussion of a Scarf set, even as a minor option.

Given the general speed creep in the meta, you trade the sheer power of Specs Steam Eruption for far superior utility in the ability to surprise and OHKO a number of prominent threats across OU; including Landorus-I and M-Metagross. Also secures the matchup against Kartana, which can easily revenge kill with Leaf Blade. It's worth noting that at a really mediocre speed tier of 70, Volcanion is really susceptible to powerful Earth Powers and Thunderbolts from the likes of Lando-I and all the Electrics floating around; Scarf puts you just below positive-natured 130s, giving you the ability to OHKO all offensive threats weak to either Fire Blast or Steam Eruption. I find Scarf to be an incredible bluff anti-lead against opposing Lando and Garchomp in particular.

name: Choice Scarf
move 1: Steam Eruption
move 2: Fire Blast / Flamethrower
move 3: Sludge Wave
move 4: Explosion / Earth Power
4 Atk/252 SpA/252 SpE (Naive)
  • Naive Scarf puts you at a whopping 393 speed stat, just one below positive natured base 130s such as Tapu Koko and just above Weavile. Scarf also turns Volc into a nasty late-game cleaner with two of the best offensive STABs in the game.
  • Steam Eruption allows you to shock Lando-I, all non-Scarfed Lando-T variants, and Band Dugtrio.
  • Fire Blast nets key OHKOs on M-Metagross and Weavile. If accuracy is a concern, Flamethrower has an 81.3% chance to drop M-Metagross with Stealth Rock.
  • Sludge Wave is superior to Sludge Bomb, netting you critical 2HKOs on the most common Clefable and Tapu Fini spreads.
  • Explosion is your bailout move, allowing you to take out clear out Latios that have taken prior damage, as well as putting a major dent in defensive threats which might otherwise wall you. Earth Power is another solid option of course, though can easily cost you offensive momentum due to all the ground immunes flying around in OU.
  • Incredible offensive synergy with Tapu Bulu, who weakens the power of enemy Earthquakes while giving you an answer to just about every relevant bulky water. Heatran is also an incredible partner due to its ability to lure and OHKO every bulky water bar Toxapex with Bloom Doom.

I feel like Pheromosa, Latios, and Mega Gyarados are three quite random Pokemon to list in the overview, but I mean it's true and it works, so I'm not going to nitpick -- Overview looks good

For the first set, I'd consider mentioning the prospect of running Earth Power - your moves are fine as is, but if you mention Toxic in set comments, I think EP deserves a set comments mention to (or perhaps an OO mention, if the other QC find that the best place)

Add a bullet point about the difference between Modest/Timid

OO needs: Choice Scarf, Expert Belt, Flame Charge, Charti Berry (alongside Shuca/Wacan), and bulky spread/restalk kinda variant (some mention of a bulky variant bc it has solid natural bulk)

C&C I feel like you should split up the "things that hit it super effectively" or w/e it is to each type of note (rock, ground, elec)

all of this nd ur good for 1/3

these are the problems I have with your reasoning. First of all, why would Steam Eruption shock a Lando-I/T or Dugtrio in the first place? It's pretty much a mandatory move for Volcanion to have. Also when would these 3 mons ever switch into a Volcanion in the first place? Band Dugtrio outspeeds and OHKOs with Earthquake, while Sashed variants deal around 78-92%. Defensive Landorus-T already has a chance to OHKO Volcanion and it outspeeds as well. Lastly, Landorus-I will be able to outspeed and OHKO with Earth Power.

252 Atk Choice Band Dugtrio Earthquake vs. 0 HP / 0 Def Volcanion: 350-414 (116.2 - 137.5%) -- guaranteed OHKO
0 Atk Landorus-Therian Earthquake vs. 0 HP / 0 Def Volcanion: 254-302 (84.3 - 100.3%) -- 6.3% chance to OHKO
252+ SpA Life Orb Sheer Force Landorus Earth Power vs. 0 HP / 0 SpD Volcanion: 549-647 (182.3 - 214.9%) -- guaranteed OHKO

Like my original points, when would a M-Metagross or Weavile ever want to switch into a Volcanion (unless it's to revenge kill it at like 2% HP). Flamethrower already knocks out Weavile more or less Fire Blast. I suggest bringing up mons that would actually want to switch into Volcanion that would actually get chunked by Fire Blast.

However, I do agree with your points of Sludge Wave and Explosion listen as an "other option." Sludge Bomb is better since the chance of poison is higher and the difference in base power is pretty non-existent since it still 2OHKOs or KOs relevant mons.

252+ SpA Choice Specs Volcanion Sludge Bomb vs. 172 HP / 0 SpD Azumarill: 388-458 (101 - 119.2%) -- guaranteed OHKO
252+ SpA Choice Specs Volcanion Sludge Wave vs. 172 HP / 0 SpD Azumarill: 410-484 (106.7 - 126%) -- guaranteed OHKO

252+ SpA Choice Specs Volcanion Sludge Bomb vs. 252 HP / 16+ SpD Tapu Fini: 232-274 (67.4 - 79.6%) -- guaranteed 2HKO after Leftovers recovery
252+ SpA Choice Specs Volcanion Sludge Wave vs. 252 HP / 16+ SpD Tapu Fini: 244-288 (70.9 - 83.7%) -- guaranteed 2HKO after Leftovers recovery

252+ SpA Choice Specs Volcanion Sludge Bomb vs. 252 HP / 84+ SpD Clefable: 294-346 (74.6 - 87.8%) -- guaranteed 2HKO after Leftovers recovery
252+ SpA Choice Specs Volcanion Sludge Wave vs. 252 HP / 84+ SpD Clefable: 310-366 (78.6 - 92.8%) -- guaranteed 2HKO after Leftovers recovery

Agreed that Weavile was a bit of an asspull, but grants insight into what exactly Scarf allows you to outspeed. In the case of Lando-I/T in particular, why wouldn't they attempt to revenge kill Volcanion (before realizing it's scarfed?) If you're playing it right, even M-Metagross comes in thinking it can revenge kill with Thunderpunch.

The utility of unorthodox Scarf sets has always been mental shenanigans. 9/10 Volcanion are Specs/LO, take it for what you will.

Also, how does Band Dugtrio or Defensive Lando-T outspeed Naive Scarf Volcanion?

didn't see the scarf, my b

I would also suggest adding assault vest as a set or at least to OO. That great 130 SPD lets Volcanian take several special hits and do respectable damage back. You can decide to invest in either SPD or Def depending on what you want your team needs, and max out Spa so that you still hit ridiculously hard with stab or coverage moves.

Just a small nitpick: mention Overheat in OO, as it is a little bit stronger than Fire Blast and doesn't miss as often. The SpA drop does bother Volcanion, though, but as Volcanion is constantly switching out anyways, it may be worth it

Yeah I also think that Modest+Overheat is worth a mention in OO. Jaroda did a few calcs to show what it has the potential to do here in the ORAS thread, and the increase in power between timid Fire Blast and modest Overheat is very noticeable to the point that it is definitely a valid option.
