Golden Years - David Bowie

Thank you everyone for voting once again and thank you for being incredibly patient! Both hosts have been incredibly busy with work and school, and neither have been able to do much. Fortunately, I'm kicking this back into action by announcing this week's winners as InvisibleWater and Givrix with Mega Heracross and Chansey respectively. Your submissions will actually be archived shortly and this time, I actually mean it.

Ziggy Stardust - David Bowie
Mawile @ Mawilite
Ability: Intimidate
EVs: 40 HP / 252 Atk / 216 Spe
Adamant Nature
- Swords Dance
- Play Rough
- Sucker Punch

- Thunder Punch

This week's victim will be Mega Mawile! With recent meta shifts, Mega Mawile has become the frontrunner in the "Tier's Best Mega" category by proving itself to be one of the tier's quintessential breakers, possessing the ability to immensely pressure bulkier archetypes without much support. Although I recently covered this, I've had a few differences in opinions since. For instance, I still believe that Swords Dance is one of the most crucial aspects of Mawile's breaking ability. I also failed to mention the pretty interesting options that it can run, including an All-out Attacking and Sub sets, which allow Mawile to break past many of its other checks, which SD variants cannot, which is cool. Deadline is whenever, happy posting!

Mega Scizor as a check
giphy-2.gif

Scizor-Mega @ Scizorite
Ability: Technician
EVs: 248 HP / 8 Atk / 252 Def
Impish Nature
- Bullet Punch
- Curse
- U-turn
- Roost

It checks non Fire Fang Mega Mawile with its great defense stat combined with curse boosts it to very high levels, taking little from unboosted knock off. At +2 attack, Mega Scizor can 2hko with Bullet Punch.

Calcs
+2 8 Atk Technician Scizor-Mega Bullet Punch vs. 160 HP / 0 Def Mawile-Mega: 153-181 (54.4 - 64.4%) -- guaranteed 2HKO

+2 252+ Atk Huge Power Mawile-Mega Knock Off vs. +1 248 HP / 252+ Def Scizor-Mega: 102-120 (29.7 - 34.9%) -- 14% chance to 3HKO

+4 252+ Atk Huge Power Mawile-Mega Knock Off vs. +2 248 HP / 252+ Def Scizor-Mega: 114-135 (33.2 - 39.3%) -- 100% chance to 3HKO

Magnezone as a check

magnezone.gif

Magnezone @ Electrium Z
Ability: Magnet Pull
EVs: 4 Def / 252 SpA / 252 Spe
Modest Nature
- Thunderbolt
- Flash Cannon
- Substitute
- Hidden Power [Fire]

I wouldn't take a dedicated defensive approach to check Mega Mawile because it theoretically has everything it needs to circumvent its checks, whether it is by overpowering resists with SD or using its nearly infinite-sized movepool to hit whatever it decides to counteract against. Should Mega Mawile lack a move to hit a certain foe, it will typically aim to set SD or hazard stacking to wallbreak. In other words, Mega Mawile typically finds its own way to do its job once it got a safe switch-in and as long as it is healthy.

Using Magnezone means we can aim to ensure Mega Mawile doesn't get more than a kill. Choice Specs is another option to use as Thunderbolt has minimum of ~98% roll with Choice Specs on 64 HP EVs variant of Mega Mawile, but my pick goes to Substitute + Z set to evade Sucker Punch and guarantee OHKO. Entry hazard setters that Mega Mawile is paired with are also threatened by Magnezone (Ferrothorn / Toxapex / Clefable). While Magnezone can't switch into Mega Mawile safely, it can at worst function as a safety insurance if it manages to trap unboosted Mega Mawile or play right with Substitute if it is at +2.

252+ SpA Magnezone Gigavolt Havoc (175 BP) vs. 64 HP / 0 SpD Mawile-Mega: 328-387 (127.6 - 150.5%) -- guaranteed OHKO

Edit:

My ladder is terrible but here is a replay for those interested. I used Steelium Z Magnezone bc the rest of the team...

Volcarona as a """"counter""""

Volcarona @ Buginium Z
Ability: Flame Body
EVs: 248 HP / 248 Def / 12 Spe
Timid Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Quiver Dance
- Roost
- Bug Buzz
- Fiery Dance

(EVs can change, but you need at least 248/200 or 248/124+ in defenses to tank +2 sucker punch)
Volcarona can switch safely on all M-Mawile sets (bar the never used Rock Slide variant), had a chance to burn with flame body, and can roost or claim the kill with Fiery Dance.

Reserving Bulky WoW Zard X as a counter? Or hard check

Charizard @ Charizardite X
Ability: Blaze
EVs: 160 HP / 104 Def / 252 Spe
Jolly Nature
- Will-O-Wisp
- Roost
- Dragon Claw
- Flare Blitz/Earthquake

+2 Sucker Punch kills regular Zard, so its normal version is far from safe vs Mawile. This allows you to switch in at +0, burn it, heal up, and kill w FB/EQ.

Zygarde as a check

Zygarde @ Choice Band
Ability: Aura Break
Shiny: Yes
EVs: 4 HP / 252 Atk / 252 Spe
Adamant Nature
- Thousand Arrows
- Extreme Speed
- Iron Tail
- Outrage

God snek outpaces M-Maw, survives a +2 Sucker Punch and OHKOes M-Maw with Thousand Arrows.
+2 252+ Atk Huge Power Mawile-Mega Sucker Punch vs. 4 HP / 0 Def Zygarde: 244-288 (68.1 - 80.4%) -- guaranteed 2HKO

252+ Atk Choice Band Zygarde Thousand Arrows vs. 40 HP / 0 Def Mawile-Mega: 336-396 (133.8 - 157.7%) -- guaranteed OHKO

Heatran as a Counter.

Heatran @ Firium Z/Groundium Z
Ability: Flash Fire
EVs: 252 SpA / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
- Magma Storm
- Earth Power
- Taunt
- Will-O-Wisp

Heatran @ Leftovers
Ability: Flash Fire
EVs: 252 HP / 4 SpA / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
- Magma Storm
- Earth Power
- Taunt
- Toxic

Heatran is a great mon, being able to take any hit from Mega Mawile unless it's the rare Brick Break/SubFocus Punch. In return, Heatran can threaten Mega Mawile with a super effective Magma Storm or Earth Power, while WoW sets can catch Mega Mawiles at +2 trying to Sucker Punch Heatran.
+2 252+ Atk Huge Power Mawile-Mega Knock Off vs. 0 HP / 0 Def Heatran: 255-300 (78.9 - 92.8%) -- guaranteed 2HKO
+2 252+ Atk Huge Power Mawile-Mega Thunder Punch vs. 252 HP / 0 Def Heatran: 294-346 (76.1 - 89.6%) -- guaranteed 2HKO after Leftovers recovery
+2 252+ Atk Huge Power Mawile-Mega Sucker Punch vs. 252 HP / 0 Def Heatran: 274-323 (70.9 - 83.6%) -- guaranteed 2HKO after Leftovers recovery
252+ Atk Huge Power Mawile-Mega Brick Break vs. 252 HP / 0 Def Heatran: 294-348 (76.1 - 90.1%) -- guaranteed 2HKO after Leftovers recovery

252 SpA Heatran Earth Power vs. 40 HP / 0 SpD Mawile-Mega: 206-244 (82 - 97.2%) -- guaranteed 2HKO
4 SpA Heatran Earth Power vs. 40 HP / 0 SpD Mawile-Mega: 170-202 (67.7 - 80.4%) -- guaranteed 2HKO
4 SpA Heatran Magma Storm vs. 40 HP / 0 SpD Mawile-Mega: 284-336 (113.1 - 133.8%) -- guaranteed OHKO

Tapu Koko @ Electrium Z / Leftovers
Ability: Electric Surge
EVs: 20 HP / 252 SpA / 20 SpD / 216 Spe
Timid Nature
- Thunderbolt
- Defog
- Roost
- U-turn

Tapu Koko is resistant to Sucker Punch, so it can take a +2 Sucker Punch with relative ease. Gigavolt Havoc OHKOes Mega Mawile, while Thunderbolt only needs minimal chip damage on Mega Mawile to OHKO it.

Ziggy Stardust - David Bowie
Thank you everyone for voting once again! This week's winning submissions are Tapu Koko by Jordy and Volcarona by Givrix! Your submissions will be added to the hall of fame very shortly or whenever I finish this following post.

Zeroes - David Bowie
Tapu Lele @ Psychium Z
Ability: Psychic Surge
EVs: 252 SpA / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
- Psyshock
- Moonblast
- Calm Mind
- Hidden Power Fire
This week's victim will be Tapu Lele! While you may be sick of the wave of Tapu Lele spanning across multiple projects, Tapu Lele is undeniably in a fantastic position in the current meta, thanks to the decline in balance and the subsequent decline in some of its most effective answers, including Celesteela and even Jirachi, whilst also seeing a notable decline in some of its competition such as Mega Alakazam and Mega Latios, Tapu Lele has resurfaced as one of the most common wallbreakers found on bulky offence builds. This, combined with the fact that stall has made a resurgence of its own has made Tapu Lele an incredible force in the current metagame, with very little being able to halt it defensively. However, Tapu Lele still faces many issues that are incredibly detrimental to it, with prime examples being its incredibly noticeable physical fragility and its somewhat lackluster speed, which results in it having a generally poor matchup versus offence and faster threats in general. With in mind, can you find a method to beat Lele? Submissions end on Saturday the 14th. Happy Posting!

alolan muk as a counter

Muk-Alola @ Assault Vest
Ability: Poison Touch
EVs: 248 HP / 136 Atk / 28 Def / 92 SpD / 4 Spe
Adamant Nature
- Knock Off
- Pursuit
- Poison Jab
- Fire Punch / Rock Slide

walls lele and pursuit traps it

+1 252 SpA Tapu Lele Moonblast vs. 248 HP / 92 SpD Assault Vest Muk-Alola: 142-168 (34.3 - 40.6%) -- guaranteed 3HKO
136+ Atk Muk-Alola Poison Jab vs. 0 HP / 0 Def Tapu Lele: 288-338 (102.4 - 120.2%) -- guaranteed OHKO

Celesteela @ Leftovers
Ability: Beast Boost
EVs: 248 HP / 104 Def / 156 SpD
Relaxed Nature
- Leech Seed
- Protect
- Heavy Slam
- Flamethrower

Nominating one of the very few Pokemon that can switch into this monstrosity. Other Steel-types like Heatran or Jirachi work but Heatran has to watch out for Focus Blast and can actually lose 1v1 if Tapu Lele CM's on switch and Jirachi can't OHKO back. What I think about Tapu Lele is that while the check for it has to be fat, it also has to be an appropriate pivot to actually switch in more than once.

Kartana as an offensive check

798.png

Kartana @ Fightinium Z
Ability: Beast Boost
EVs: 4 HP / 252 Atk / 252 Spe
Jolly Nature
- Swords Dance
- Leaf Blade
- Sacred Sword
- Smart Strike

Kartana for obvious reasons can't switch into Lele, but force it out because of its superior speed and Steel-type STAB, allowing it set up a SD or click some move to damage whatever check they bring in. Smart Strike nets a clean OHKO, and unboosted Leaf Blade is a roll in your favor after rocks. Pretty simple.

252 Atk Kartana Leaf Blade vs. 0 HP / 0 Def Tapu Lele: 240-283 (85.4 - 100.7%) -- 87.5% chance to OHKO after Stealth Rock
252 Atk Kartana Smart Strike vs. 0 HP / 0 Def Tapu Lele: 372-440 (132.3 - 156.5%) -- guaranteed OHKO

Ability: Soul-Heart
EVs: 248 HP / 224 SpD / 36 Spe
Sassy Nature
- Fleur Cannon
- Iron Head
- Hidden Power Fire
- Volt Switch

Assault Vest Magearna is able to switch-in to any Variant of Tapu Lele and take nothing from it, it's also able to retaliate with Iron Head doing a decent chunk in return.
