As I usually do when I’m feeling mad about something pokemon-related or sadistic in general, I booted up Pokemon Online and loaded my auto-win no skill needed UU hail team. After a bit of laddering I came across wilson46, a very fearsome opponent. I’ve wanted to write a warstory for a while, but hadn’t had a battle up to my standards until this one. I was still reluctant to warstory this one because Wilson misses a key attack early in the game, but great new user aeo (not to be confused with mediocre old user eo) made an absolutely amazing replay player that made keeping track of percentages much easier, which motivated me to get off my ass and write my very first warstory.
For those not familiar with UU, keep in mind that this battle is not indicative of the UU metagame at the moment. Weather wars are almost nonexistent, this battle being the only one I've had since the server went back up.
Hail/sandstorm damage and leftovers recovery will be edited out after the first occurrence. For some turns, stalling for hail damage / leftovers recovery is vital to my strategy, so they will show up again during those turns.
I played this game on an alt, but to make the log easier to read I replaced that alt's name with Snunch.

Wilson's team is about as anti-hail as you can get. Victini is deadly, Blastoise renders Froslass completely useless (and is the best spinner in the tier for just that reason), and he even has a Hippopotas to change the weather on me. Preparing myself to actually have to think while using my hail team, I try to devise a strategy. Wilson doesn't have a safe switch into Rotom-f (not many do), and Milotic should be able to wall his team if Roserade goes down. I can't imagine his Victini or Yanmega being fast, they seem like pure wallbreakers designed to set Stoutland up for a clean sweep.
Hippopotas is slower than Abomasnow so sand will be up if we lead with our weather starters. I also want to keep Stealth Rock off the field as soon as possible, so I want to lead with someone who will put immediate pressure on Hippopotas. In retrospect, Rotom-F was the best lead here, but I chose Froslass. Rotom-F could come in on Blastoise later.
Team Preview shows Snunch's team as Hail, and immediately I am fearing the worst. Having a Sandstorm team puts me at a bit of a disadvantage right off the bat, especially since my team can't eat Blizzards all day. Anyway, I decide to lead with Victini since it would most likely provide me with the best lead matchup.

Victini is definitely not what I wanted to see. The play makes perfect sense, but my auto-piloted mind didn't consider what Wilson would lead with. Wilson is a good player, and he has Stoutland for revenge killing, so I make an educated guess that Victini is not scarfed. I decide to sub to scout his set.
Out comes Froslass, a thing I really hate to face. Now, he may fear that my Victini is Choice Scarfed, making his Milotic a secure switch-in. However, my Victini is mixed and I intend to blast that thing with a Life Orb boosted Thunder.

Thunder on a sandstorm team is the last thing I expected, but it is pretty damn effective against my team. Milotic, my usual switch into Victini, is obviously not safe now, so I go to my scarf Flygon to absorb either Thunder or a fire attack.
Ah, he subs up to scout what move I would choose. A smart move, but I know he's not staying in for another attack. Knowing he won't switch in Milotic in fear of another Thunder, I opt to use Psychic hoping to catch his Flygon on the switch.

Damn, Wilson makes the safe play and puts a huge dent into Flygon. Now that Flygon is weakened, neither Milotic nor Flygon is a safe switch into Victini anymore. Unless I want to sacrifice a pokemon every time Victini comes in, I'm going to have to get some momentum or put up some hazards quickly. Blastoise prevents me from doing the latter, so I U-turn on his obvious switch to get that momentum.
A good move for me, I do a lot of damage to his Flygon with Psychic. Guessing his Flygon is the common Scarf variant, I think about his possible moves: Earthquake, Outrage, U-Turn, Stone Edge. He probably won't want to use EQ / Outrage / SE because I have pokemon that can easily switch into this Flygon and take its hit, so U-Turn would be his optimal move here. Knowing this, I switch into the BEAST (favourite poke on the team) to take it

Hmm… what do I do now? I don't want Milotic potentially taking a specs bug buzz to the face, he has a hard counter to Froslass, Nidoqueen loses one-on-one, and Aboma isn't scarfed. My only choice here is Rotom-F, but thankfully it's a pretty safe choice. Rotom is timid with thunderbolt / blizzard / substitute / pain split. If Yanmega is Modest, Rotom will outspeed and OHKO, and if it is timid, Rotom should sponge the bug buzz. Regardless, the majority of Rotom-F on the ladder are for some reason scarfed (such a waste of a great mon), so I should be able to scare away his Yanmega.
Snunch sent out Rotom-F!
Rotom-F - 100%
Yanmega - 87%
I Blizzard instead of Thunderbolt so he can't pull off a Hippo -> Victini double switch, but the choice was mostly arbitrary. Thankfully, accuracy doesn't bite me in the ass.
Now here's where the problem begins. Rotom-F is a massive problem for my team due to its unresisted coverage with BoltBeam, allowing it to rip my team to shreds. Realizing I have no safe switch in, I kinda leave Yanmega in to die, getting as much damage on this thing as possible. I predict this isn't a scarfed Rotom since his Flygon is already scarfed, and with no spinner on his team, it wouldn't be ideal to put another scarf on it.

My star player and biggest threat to his team is taken out, but so is his specs Yanmega, which was a huge threat to my team. Wilson wins this exchange because it means that dealing with Blastoise will be a lot trickier without Rotom to switch in on rapid spins. I really don't want to have to risk getting Abomasnow burned with Scald, but I'll have to make do. Flygon is my usual choice for blind switches, but I don't want him to get free SR with Hippo, so I go to Milotic to force out Hippo and deal with Victini if he tries to do the same thing he did at the beginning of the game.
I do massive damage with the Specs Bug Buzz and it kills me with a Blizzard, dying to its own LO recoil in the process. In hindsight I should have kept Yanmega as it could have blasted holes in his team, but I guess eliminating Rotom is a plus.

Victini comes back out and so does his Milotic. I know Victini can't OHKO it with anything, so I decide to switch into my Roserade, hoping to set up some Spikes and perhaps regain some momentum later.
Good matchup for me. Thunder won't OHKO so the switch is obvious. I consider using Dragon Tail, but without hazards up its pretty pointless, so I click scald for damage against whatever switches in and possible burn hax.

A critburn never meant so much, pivotal moment right there. I go to my specially defensive Abomasnow on the predicted spikes. It can handle sludge bomb from defensive Roserade and begins the weather war. 5/6 of my pokemon know Blizzard (2 as their only attack), so it's pretty damn important for my team. Hail will also chip away at Victini, the #1 threat to my team right now.
Well, he burns and crits me with Scald, but this isn't a big deal to Roserade thanks to Natural Cure. I know he's going to switch in Abomasnow here, either predicting me to spike, hit him with a Grass move, or just wanting to set his Hail up. I decide to make a double switch to Victini in hopes of luring in Milotic and disposing of it, as I know that thing will get annoying later.

Mindgames time. I definitely can't leave in Abomasnow, losing it means game's over. Flygon isn't a safe choice either, as I guess that Psychic is his most likely move. In retrospect, Nidoqueen is the best switch here. It is useless against the rest of his team and sacrificing it (or getting it in on Thunder) means I can deal with Victini safely the next turn. Instead, I make a mistake and go to Milotic, hoping that Psychic and Thunder won't manage a 2HKO. If he does use Thunder, he'll have to hit two Thunders in a row.
He protects to scout my move, but this isn't a problem as I can go for it again. At this point, he'll probably think I won't go for the Thunder and for the Fire move instead. So let's see what happens!

Wilson outpredicts me again! This is very bad news, Milotic is a vital part of my defenses and letting it get this weak means that Stoutland runs all over me. Thunder hit once, but is Wilson lucky enough to hit again? In-game, I thought Thunder had 50% accuracy in hail (and also sand, which I just found out isn't true). I leave Milotic in, partly to dare him to hit with an inaccurate move again (my best shot at a win at this point), and partly because I know that crippling my Milotic has given Wilson a huge advantage.
Man, I guess right again and I slam the Milotic HARD with a Thunder. The battle is going great for me now. Taking out his bulky water means that my other pokes will have an easier time for the rest of the battle. Now, I only need this next Thunder to connect and bye-bye Milotic!

Sorry about the hax Wilson, you probably coast to a victory if this hits. As it stands, Milotic is back in fighting form and Victini is down below 50%. The Roserade switch is the most likely one, but I don't want to risk him sacrificing Victini to do a bunch of damage to Milotic, then cleaning up with Stoutland. I play it safe and scald.
To my dismay and terror, my Thunder misses and he Recovers half of his health back -.-. I would have gone for the Psychic here, but I did not know if it would kill or not, and I didn't feel like taking the risk or getting a calc since this was a ladder match of course! I found his Hippo switch odd. He's going to SR, but I get to hit it with Scald. Great for me, his Hippo is no longer in fighting shape to take on Flygon.
Unfortunately, now I'm in a mess. I don't really have much of a plan to take down this Milotic, and here's where the miss comes back to bite me. This is made even worse because if Aboma falls, my team is likely swept by Stoutland. The switch here is obvious, I decide to take advantage of it by switching the weather for free.
Scald does a lot of damage to me, and I know I can't take another. The switch to Abomasnow is imminent, but I cannot risk Hippo dying as that would lose me the match right there. I also don't have Roar to play any prediction games, and in the end I decide against my only move to deter Abomasnow from staying in too long, Toxic, to playing it safe and switching out.

Ouch, Wilson predicts that my Abomasnow doesn't carry a grass attack and roars it out before I can get any healing. Even worse, he roars in Froslass, who takes heavy damage from hazards. This is exactly the matchup I don't want, and Wilson knows this, so I'm predicting another roar. Good thing my Froslass is manly and uses Taunt instead of that wimpy Thunder Wave. Taunt should buy me an extra turn of leech seed recovery and hail damage while I try to wear down Blastoise.
Okay, Froslass comes in from the Roar. I have played with Froslass a lot in the past (I used a Hail team myself to get reqs back in Round 2), and the set I used and saw many other people use was Blizzard / Substitute / Thunder Wave / Spikes. Thinking he can't do anything to me, I opt to Roar again to rack up even more hazard damage, but my ignorance to Froslass' other viable moves shows up here in a second.

Uh oh, bad news. Wilson makes a very smart play going to Stoutland instead of Blastoise. Stoutland could sponge a Blizzard from Froslass and immediately threaten it, while at the same time putting Abomasnow in a checkmate position. If I switch out now, Abomasnow will die to hazards on the next switch, and Wilson will win the weather war, and with that the game. My only hope is to double protect so that Abomasnow gets enough leftovers recovery to safely survive another switchin. Even if that happens, I could only switch in once more. With that prediction, Wilson gives himself the solid upper hand.

At the time I had no idea why Wilson switched out, but looking back on it he was not aware that Abomasnow was so critically low on HP and that switching wasn't an option for me. Despite the fact that Abomasnow lived another round, I was not in the clear yet. Abomasnow still can't switch out, and if Wilson just sacrifices Hippo by clicking Toxic, he will still win the weather war. I Leech Seed because regardless of what Wilson does, it's my only hope of winning the weather war.
Now I'm really confused about his move here. He goes for the Double Protect for some reason, and if I had stayed in and hit him, his Abomasnow would have been dead, turning the battle over to my side as I would have had control of the weather. I really don't know what he's going for here, but since he didn't go for the Blizzard with Froslass last time on my Hippo, I think he won't do so again. Yeah to be honest, I don't know what I was thinking during that turn, as he makes a good move and Leech Seeds me (which would have been good to get on Stoutland regardless if I had gone to that). Things are looking bad yet again, and my chances of winning this are turning extremely slim.

The Leech Seed miss is annoying, and he now has a perfect opportunity to Roar. Aboma can survive another switchin, but without the ability to take a single attack while doing so, I'll have to sacrifice a mon to get it in, then sacrifice Abomasnow once it's in. This means I'm practically down two mons, and Stoutland remains capable of sweeping my team if I can't keep weather up. I might have won the battle (skirmish?) but the war (battle?) is still far from over.

Instead of Roaring like a normal person, I go for the Scald banking on the burn. This doesn't work out and again I am Leeched. Thinking he'll Protect expecting my Roar this time, I go to Stoutland hoping that it can clutch the game for me~! Wilson predicts that I don't taunt, but Blastoise is so crippled that I'm pretty sure that Wilson will just sacrifice it. If I U-Turned and Blastoise stayed in, my only real switchin would be Nidoqueen, as I couldn't risk switching anybody else into hazards only to be roared away. Time to get rid of this thorn in my side.
I roar him into Flygon, whom we have not seen for a while. I expect he'll finish me off with Earthquake, but I still have a Hippo left so I will go to that.

Damn, my adamant Flygon fails to do relevant damage. Now I wish I used outrage, which would probably have nabbed the 2HKO. At this point, Wilson can't do much to Milotic, and predicting the fairly obvious Slack Off, I send in my bulky water to finish the game.
All right, Earthquake doesn't do that much damage at all. Now, here I list all of his remaining pokemon in my head: Flygon, Abomasnow, Froslass, Milotic, and an unseen Nidoqueen. I have Stealth Rock and two layers of Spikes up. I'm expecting either Aboma, Lass, or Milotic (-.-) to come in, and the best move here would be to Toxic. I know he's not going to Nidoqueen as it can't really do much with sandstorm limiting Blizzard's perfect accuracy, and I predict his Nidoqueen to have Stealth Rock. Because no other Pokemon on his team can learn it, and Stealth Rock cannot be used with Sheer Force, making my Hippo a bit safer. Not having Roar absolutely sucks in this scenario, but hey, what can you do?

Really good play by Wilson here, and Milotic no longer has its way with his team. It's not too much of a problem though, as long as I don't carelessly throw Abomasnow at hazards I should come out with the victory anyway. Sacrificing Blastoise is Wilson's most likely move, and if I let it get in on a Recover it will use Roar, possibly bringing out Abomasnow. I have to attack the switch.
The Milotic comes back in and I Toxic it. Not bad I suppose, but at the same time this doesn't serve much use to me as Snunch also knows his Milotic is easily expendable and not necessary for victory.

gg Wilson, that was probably the toughest match I've played since the server went back up. Thanks for being a good sport and thanks for providing your own commentary. I look forward to a rematch.
Thanks for reading my first warstory. I hope I portrayed UU in a positive light, but keep in mind that weather wars in UU are extremely uncommon. Now get on the ladder and use something that will destroy hail. If enough of us do it, teams like the one I used will start disappearing and everybody will have more fun!

Anyway, I decide to lead with Victini since it would most likely provide me with the best lead matchup.
wilson46 sent out Victini!
Snunch sent out Froslass!

He brings in Abomasnow here to get back up the Hail. If I can kill it, then I can take control of the weather for the rest of the match, and have a chance of winning.

Protect #1. Will I win the coin flip?
Ugh, I forgot about Protect, and now he's seen what move I'm going to use. This is where Life Orb would have come in handy, but alas, I am stuck with a Choice Banded Frustration (perfect move to fit my emotions at this point xD). I expect he'll switch into Froslass to dodge my Frustration, so I will switch back to Hippo to get sand back up so Stoutland can roam free yet again.

uhhhhhhhh what just happened?
I'll take this time to heal up and hope for the best.

Wow, I luck out here as Wilson again predicts a switch and goes for the recovery. Abomasnow is now safely above the hazard line, but I'm not out of the woods yet. Aboma needs more healing, and given that his switch is so obvious, I decide to take advantage of it with a leech seed.

I switch in Blastoise as he makes another good play by Leech Seeding again that I should have saw coming. I dodge it however, which is always nice. He's obviously going for it again, but here I make a really stupid move as you'll see.

I'm not really sure why Wilson didn't roar. Maybe he predicted a Nidoqueen / Flygon switch? Maybe he just wanted to watch a stupid christmas tree burn? Either way, Abomasnow once again has a source of healing. Protect is an obvious move on my part, trying to squeeze out a few droplets of recovery before I get roared, so I predict that Wilson will just switch to Stoutland in an attempt to brake my stupid tree.
Instead of Roaring like a normal person, I go for the Scald banking on the burn. This doesn't work out and again I am Leeched. Thinking he'll Protect expecting my Roar this time, I go to Stoutland hoping that it can clutch the game for me~! (as it has many times in the past) I've gotten enough hazards to KO everything left on his team, and if I can just kill that blasted Abomasnow..

Gotem. Abomasnow is now has a comfortable amount of spare HP, I should be able to switch it in twice now. This means everything when the battle is just coming down to a weather war. I now have two options, leech seed and protect. Most players in Wilson's position would be pretty frustrated and would just try to hit Abomasnow as hard as possible, so I decide to go for the protect.
And he pulls off another great play, Leech Seeding again as my Stoutland comes in. Now he can Protect and Protect on my attacks, but I just need to get this thing out of here. With that said, I switch to Blastoise in hope to Roar him away.

Wilson keeps his cool and realizes that leaving Stoutland in on a protect would absolutely destroy any sort of momentum he could hope to have and makes a smart double switch back to Blastoise. The Roar is obvious, and since Blizzard and Protect won't do anything, Leech Seed is my only real option (my fourth move is substitute). Let's just hope he doesn't roar in Froslass.
He goes for the safe protect, but now he has gotten so much health back that I'll need multiple roars to bring him down.

And in comes Froslass, just the mon I didn't want to see. I consider my options: Taunt to hopefully get a free turn of Leech Seed recovery, or Blizzard to get some damage on whatever switches in. Froslass lives hazards + sandstorm damage at its current health so there's no need to try to stall for more recovery. Blizzard is my best choice here.
I roar him into Froslass yet again, which is okay I guess. I know he won't Taunt now expecting me to attack him, so I'll do just that!

Blastoise goes down and out comes Stoutland to finish off Milotic. No real option here other than clicking Scald and hoping I can get a little damage on the dog before I go down.
I pray to the Pokemon Gods that my Choice Banded Frustration kills this Milotic after the Marvel Scale boost. I really don't want to sustain any more damage on this thing as it still has a chance to kill things, but in theory, he can still stall me with Hail and Substitute Froslass.
