What is Next Best's Thing?
Next Best Thing is a project where players search through a listed Pokémon's movepool along with providing and explaining why this set should be used over a standard set. Every cycle/week, participants of this project will submit and create a new set for the selected Pokemon, and near the end of the week, voting will occur. Submissions will take place from Monday to Friday, and on Saturday and Sunday, voting will occur for your nomination to be featured in our Hall of Fame!

Rules
You can be as creative as you want, just make sure that you can prove that your set stands apart from the standard sets. It is also important that you understand the difference between a creative set and a gimmicky set- this project is meant to use creativity to maximize a Pokemon's potential, not produce gimmicks. We may disallow sets if we deem them too gimmicky, situational, or unoriginal.
  • Suggestions are welcome for Pokémon to cover in the future, but please directly send those to me in a DM for direct consideration rather than posting them here to be considered (more)!
  • Please do not reserve a set that currently has an analysis or is in the process of being created.
  • Voting for your own set is not allowed and advertising for people to vote for your set will result in a disqualification in your submission.
  • You may reserve a set, but if you haven't properly filled it in within 2 days of your reservation, it may be taken by someone else.
  • Follow the forum rules, meaning that you shouldn't post one-liners, unless voting. Try to also avoid double-posting if possible.

Cycle 1: How to Love.. McMeghan Meowscarada. <3
:ss/meowscarada:
Greetings UU! I am so honored to kick off this project here to host an engaging and interactive project for the community. Meowscarada sets the stage as a fast and potent progress maker overall in my eyes. Knock Off is a simple team building factor that just on paper guarantees some sort of progress. Dropping straight from OU gives sort of a heartbreaking twist for Lokix, Zarude, and Greninja in particular in teambuilding selection but hey, I think Lokix still holds a stable ground in the metagame with First Impression doing good against Dark-types in general and Latios. Meowscarada in contrast has Protean + Triple Axel and a plethora of great attacks and support wizardry that can cook up in certain situations. This consistency and power reminds me of McMeghan, and if you really want to nail this project....well you probably have to channel your inner SCL-Champion aura. The deadline for submissions will end on May 2nd (Monday - Friday). HDB & Choice Band are allowed. Just not with Triple Axel / Low Kick as last(s).
Meowscarada @ Heavy-Duty Boots / Choice Band

Oh ngl YES. I suppose this competitive discussion on Meowscarada and McMeghan isn't deemed to last that long. Let's pretend like it never happened (thx)

:sv/meowscarada:
Protective Pads + Tera Fairy :protective_pads:
Meowscarada @ Protective Pads
Ability: Protean
Tera Type: Fairy
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Jolly Nature
- Flower Trick
- Knock Off
- U-turn
- Play Rough / Triple Axel

Meowscarada is kinda annoyed by things like Flame Body Heatran and Rocky Helmet users in Skarmory and Toxapex so Protective Pads come in mind as sort of a SS consistent that could bluff a choice-locked set, situationally. Meowscarada’s high speed could falls short to things like Vacuum Wave Keldeo / Mach Punch Conkeldurr at certain positioning so Tera Fairy feels like a cute consideration.

Meowscarada @ Leftovers
Ability: Overgrow
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Tera Type: Grass
Jolly Nature
- Knock Off
- Flower Trick
- Substitute
- Leech Seed

U know those cobalions, heatrans and skarms that wall you? well leech + sub allow you to sit on them and sub stall them, with knock off to disturb them, with knock off + hazards + leech seed you can force a lot of damage onto many things. Overgrow allows you to not be a normal type and remain to retain your water, electric, dark resistance and psychic immunity

Life Orb Tera Fire Meowscarada

:meowscarada:
Rosemary (Meowscarada) (F) @ Life Orb
Ability: Protean
Shiny: Yes
Tera Type: Fire
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 Def / 252 Spe
Jolly Nature
- Flower Trick
- Knock Off
- Sucker Punch
- Tera Blast

I originally designed this for OU play to lure in Corviknight, but it probably works even better in a UU environment. Scizor, Skarmory, and Tinkaton do not want any part of a Tera Blast Fire attack. Burn immunity is a bonus, but not the real reason for this set.

252 Atk Life Orb Tera Fire Meowscarada Tera Blast (80 BP) vs. 120 HP / 0 Def Scizor: 608-717 (195.4 - 230.5%) -- guaranteed OHKO
252 Atk Life Orb Tera Fire Meowscarada Tera Blast (80 BP) vs. 252 HP / 160+ Def Skarmory: 182-218 (54.4 - 65.2%) -- guaranteed 2HKO
252 Atk Life Orb Tera Fire Meowscarada Tera Blast (80 BP) vs. 252 HP / 0 Def Tinkaton: 374-445 (100 - 118.9%) -- guaranteed OHKO
252 Atk Life Orb Tera Fire Meowscarada Tera Blast (80 BP) vs. 0 HP / 252 Def Cobalion: 203-242 (62.8 - 74.9%) -- guaranteed 2HKO
252 Atk Life Orb Tera Fire Meowscarada Tera Blast (80 BP) vs. 0 HP / 4 Def Serperior: 315-374 (108.2 - 128.5%) -- guaranteed OHKO
252 Atk Life Orb Tera Fire Meowscarada Tera Blast (80 BP) vs. 252 HP / 252+ Def Chesnaught: 190-226 (50 - 59.4%) -- guaranteed 2HKO

I swear on my life the fact that this is a combination of the previous 2 sets is entirely coincidental
Anyways...

Life Orb Leech Seed Meowscarada

:Meowscarada: :Life Orb:
Meowscarada @ Life Orb
Ability: Protean
Tera Type: Dark
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Jolly Nature
- Triple Axel
- Knock Off
- U-turn
- Leech Seed

The point of this set is to boost Meowscarada's offensive pressuring capabilities while also maintaining some level of longevity through leech seed. Certain foes such as Skarmory and Fezandipiti lie just outside Boots Meow's ability to 2hko them, while Cobalion and especially heatran are irritating through contact punishing via Rocky Helmet and Flame Body. Life orb gives Meowscarada the firepower necessary to punch through Fezandipiti and Skarmory (with rocks up), and Leech seed lets it get chip on Cobalion and Heatran while avoiding taking chip from Helmet and Burns from Flame Body on top of healing off Life Orb and Hazard chip.

252 Atk Life Orb Protean Meowscarada Triple Axel (120 BP) (3 hits) vs. 252 HP / 160+ Def Fezandipiti: 204-246 (53.6 - 64.7%) -- guaranteed 2HKO
252 Atk Life Orb Protean Meowscarada Triple Axel (120 BP) (3 hits) vs. 252 HP / 208+ Def Skarmory: 133-163 (39.8 - 48.8%) -- 66% chance to 2HKO after Stealth Rock

Life Orb also lets Triple Axel put a more significant dent into other neutral foes such as Conkeldurr and gives it a very good chance to OHKO offensive Excadrill (given the move lands 3 hits)
252 Atk Life Orb Protean Meowscarada Triple Axel (120 BP) (3 hits) vs. 0 HP / 4 Def Excadrill: 344-409 (95.2 - 113.2%) -- 87.6% chance to OHKO
252 Atk Life Orb Protean Meowscarada Triple Axel (120 BP) (3 hits) vs. 4 HP / 0 Def Conkeldurr: 240-285 (68.1 - 80.9%) -- guaranteed 2HKO after Leftovers recovery

:Meowscarada: :focus-sash:
Meowscarada @ Focus Sash
Ability: Overgrow
Tera Type: Ghost
EVs: 252 SpA / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Nasty Plot
- Energy Ball
- Dark Pulse
- Aura Sphere

Meow has some pretty decent traits for HO on paper with it's speed to threaten fast mons like torn. With Nasty Plot, you turn the tables on typical checks like skarm and Cobalion. Focus Sash grants you other setup opportunities apart from predicting switches while also letting you survive Revenge kill attempts. It also lets you activate overgrow.

https://replay.pokemonshowdown.com/gen9uu-2338487739-ukff5l4rowepp8joqoiyxuj6rhit2pkpw A clip of it in action cuz yes i tried this

Fezandipiti isn't real he can't hurt you

Meowscarada @ Expert Belt
Ability: Protean
Tera Type: Dark
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Jolly Nature
- Thunder Punch
- Knock Off
- U-turn
- Low Kick

Expert belt makes up for some of the power lost by giving up choice band, while allowing meow to comfortably pivot around checks even after clicking other moves. Thunder punch is used over taxel here bc you hit skarm (and less importantly, pex which doesnt rlly exist) super effectively. This means you're probably using this set on a spikestack team. U-turn is super important bc it allows meow to pivot around, letting you get spike damage more safely, as well as gives you better positioning. I really don't think flower trick is necessary here but if you do decide to run it it'd be for slightly more power vs mons like clod.

252 Atk Expert Belt Protean Meowscarada Thunder Punch vs. 252 HP / 208+ Def Skarmory: 154-182 (46.1 - 54.4%) -- 53.1% chance to 2HKO
Skarm is one of the biggest issues for meow in terms of making progress due to roost and spikes immunity, so this is rlly noteworthy

ebelt also gives you great odds of koing physdef tran after rocks/spikes w/ low kick
252 Atk Expert Belt Protean Meowscarada Low Kick (120 BP) vs. 252 HP / 96+ Def Heatran: 331-391 (85.7 - 101.2%) -- 87.5% chance to OHKO after Stealth Rock
