[OVERVIEW]

Urshifu-R is one of the most threatening offensive Pokemon in Doubles, possessing a monstrous base 130 Attack, a great offensive typing, and the unique ability to bypass most traditional defensive counterplay such as Intimidate, Protect, and Defense boosting thanks to the combination of Unseen Fist ignoring protection and Surging Strikes's guaranteed critical hits. This makes it one of the strongest candidates to answer metagame staples like Kyurem-B, Incineroar, Porygon2, and Diancie. Due to Urshifu-R's excellent offensive prowess, defensive answers are limited to mainly just Amoonguss and Tapu Fini, two Pokemon that resist all of its STAB attacks. Instead, it is often answered offensively by the likes of Rillaboom, Kartana, and Necrozma. Urshifu-R is held back by a fairly middling Speed tier, meaning pairing it with speed control and priority will be very helpful. As such, Zapdos and Kartana are excellent partners, providing Tailwind support and a way to hit Water-types. Other examples of good teammates include Tapu Lele and Indeedee-F for providing Psychic Terrain, which keeps Urshifu-R safe from priority moves like Fake Out and Grassy Glide, and Heatran, which is excellent for hitting Grass-types.

[SET]
name: Offensive
move 1: Surging Strikes
move 2: Close Combat
move 3: Aqua Jet
move 4: U-turn / Protect
item: Choice Band / Life Orb
ability: Unseen Fist
nature: Jolly
evs: 252 Atk / 4 SpD / 252 Spe

[SET COMMENTS]

* Surging Strikes is incredibly free to use thanks to its guaranteed critical hits bypassing any form of damage reduction, like Intimidate. It can easily pick up OHKOs on Incineroar, Landorus-T, and Diancie.

* Close Combat is Urshifu-R's strongest attack, possessing the rare ability to OHKO Kyurem-B and Porygon2. Even neutral foes like Rillaboom and Volcanion will take a large amount of damage from it.

* Aqua Jet is reliable priority that can pick off foes with low Defense like Volcarona and Nihilego.

* U-turn is a decently hard-hitting move that allows Urshifu-R to pivot out of unfavorable situations. This can be especially useful for the opposing Grass-types it baits in, letting it switch out to proper checks. Protect is important on Life Orb sets for keeping Urshifu-R safe from the Grass- and Electric-type attacks that it often baits in.

* A Choice Band and maxed out Attack EVs allow Urshifu-R to make the most out of its offensive potential, notably scoring the OHKO on physically defensive Porygon2, which Life Orb sets cannot. However, Life Orb allows Urshifu-R to switch moves and run Protect. 252 Speed EVs and a Jolly nature let Urshifu outspeed base 95s like Kyurem-B and Tapu Lele.

[STRATEGY COMMENTS]
Other Options
=============

Urshifu-R can outrun the entire unboosted metagame with a Choice Scarf; however, this comes at a significant decrease in power, as it loses its ability to OHKO Porygon2 and Genesect. An Adamant nature can somewhat make up for the loss of offensive pressure, but the set then fails to outspeed Jolly Kyurem-B and Zygarde after a Dragon Dance. Ice Punch can be utilized on a Choice Band set to score a surprise OHKO on Zygarde. Poison Jab is the best way to hit Tapu Fini, which otherwise walls Urshifu-R completely. Both of these moves don't have much use otherwise, though.

  • The sentence in the overview starting with "However, Urshifu has a fairly middling speed tier" feels disconnected from the rest of the paragraph and I think it's because it starts with however and follows something not really related to the rest of the sentence. I think you can rephrase it as "Urshifu is also held back by its middling speed tier ...." and it'll flow a lot better after a sentence talking about ways to check it
  • I don't think mentioning Reflect is necessary since it's so rare in DOU, you can throw in defense boosts if you really want 2 points there but only mentioning Intimidate is fine
  • I don't think we need separate sets for CB and LO since they function almost identically, I would drop the LO set and either mention LO as an option in the bullet points for the CB set or talk about it in OO
Ping me on discord for any questions/clarification, otherwise implement these for QC 1/2

  • Definitely mention Porygon2 in the "metagame staples" Urshifu beats in the overview.
  • "but too slow to ever reliably function in Trick Room." - I don't think Unseen Fist works with breaking through the Trick Room barrier. Anyways, not being slow enough for Trick Room isn't really a notable drawback, I'd rather say something along the lines of "meaning it requires speed control to be most effective". Having priority to somewhat mitigate its Speed could also be worth a mention if it fits in.
  • I wouldn't really say that CB is more "prediction-reliant" than LO, that implies you need to make reads for it to function properly. Instead I'd say that CB is easier to deal with once it's locked into a move, or emphasise LO allowing the use of Protect in particular as reason to use it.
  • I'd mention a benchmark which CB hits that LO doesn't, probably that physically bulky P2 can live an LO CC - 252 Atk Life Orb Urshifu-Rapid-Strike Close Combat vs. 252 HP / 164 Def Eviolite Porygon2: 312-369 (83.4 - 98.6%) -- guaranteed 2HKO
  • Add your favourite tier leader and Bowman to the credits! (and me)

Do these for QC 2/2!
