SET]
Specially Defensive (Garganacl) @ Leftovers / Heavy-Duty Boots
Ability: Toxic Debris / Earth Eater / Water Absorb
EVs: 252 HP / 4 Atk / 252 SpD
Careful Nature
- Salt Cure
- Recover
- Stealth Rock / Iron Defense / Curse
- Protect / Earthquake / Body Press
[SET COMMENTS]
Garganacl finds itself as a Stealth Rock setter that fits on balance and stall teams with its ability to force progress through passive damage and maintain entry hazards by annoying popular hazard removal options with Salt Cure. Toxic Debris allows Garganacl to punish weak physical attacks like U-turn from Corviknight and Meloetta, while Earth Eater allows it to check and set up with Iron Defense or Curse on Ground-types like Iron Treads, Landorus-T, and Garchomp, and Water Absorb allows it to check Greninja, Inteleon, and Quaquaval lacking Close Combat. Stealth Rock pairs well with Salt Cure, as Salt Cure heavily chips common hazard removal options like Iron Treads and Corviknight, while Iron Defense and Curse allow Garganacl to act as a bulky cleaner late-game. Protect allows Garganacl to scout the opponent's move, heal with Leftovers, and force more passive damage on foes, while Earthquake and Body Press hit Magic Guard Pokemon like Quaquaval and Heatran that otherwise switch in freely. Garganacl's inability to check common special wallbreakers like Sheer Force Iron Moth and Enamorus-T makes pivots like Regieleki and Slither Wing and physical wallbreakers like Chien-Pao great partners; in return, they appreciate Garganacl's ability to maintain Stealth Rock on the field and annoy their checks like Hisuian Goodra and Corviknight with Salt Cure. Garganacl gets rapidly worn down by entry hazards when carrying Leftovers, making physically defensive hazard removal options like Corviknight and defensive Quaquaval good partners; these Pokemon also check physical wallbreakers that threaten Garganacl like Galarian Zapdos, while it checks the special wallbreakers that threaten them. The aforementioned Magic Guard Quaquaval checks Garganacl lacking Iron Defense + Body Press and can spin away Garganacl's Stealth Rock; Desolate Land Skeledirge can spinblock Quaquaval effectively, making it a good partner for Garganacl.
