Underused Pokemon Matchmaking Phase 2 [Week 29 - Nasty Plot Infernape]

Congratulations to Cactrune for winning this week's Matchmaking with 7 votes! :) Props to DaSpoofy for getting second place! Anyways, onto this week's Matchmaking Pokemon.

This week, I decided to go with a Pokemon that has recently caught my eye as a good Spikes setter. That Pokemon is...

roserade.gif

Roserade has been something I have always liked but its lack of bulk as an offensive mon and its lack of power as a defensive mon left me with doubt. Luckily, I didn't give up on it and she is now one of my favorite Spike mons in the tier. Have fun you guys and I will see you Monday! (P.S. extending this until Monday because I didn't update until mid-week and I have been super busy irl trying to move / deal with shit / etc.)

Roserade @ Black Sludge
Ability: Natural Cure
EVs: 240 HP / 252 SpD / 16 Spe
Calm Nature
- Sludge Bomb
- Toxic Spikes / Spikes
- Giga Drain
- Synthesis

Jellicent @ Colbur Berry / Leftovers
Ability: Water Absorb
EVs: 240 HP / 108 Def / 160 Spe
Timid Nature
- Will-O-Wisp
- Hex
- Recover
- Taunt

Jellicent and Roserade prove to be very synergetic (if that's a word?) both typing and role wise. Roserade is one of the few Pokemon to get access to both Toxic Spikes and Spikes, and as true for any hazard setter, keeping them up is of paramount importance. This is what allows Jellicent to be such a great partner for the flower. Jellicent walls quite a few spinners allowing roserade to retain its hazards, pokemon like Forre and Tenta can't spin against it. (They could toxic it but that's about it, and if jellicent doesn't have to switch in on forre, it can be taunted before hand.) in addition to spin blocking, jellicent is also able to prevent relatively slow defoggers from getting rid of hazards, such as mandibuzz, or empoleon. Regarding type synergy they do make very good partners, jellicent taking the brunt of fire type attacks and roserade doesn't take much from electric types such as rotom cut or heliolisk (though it does take a sizeable chunk from hyper voice). Regarding the trouble roserade has versus steel types, well, jellicent beats nearly all of them. M-Aggron, Cobalion, Forretress don't have a prayer against Jellicent. It's also able to wear down walls like Blissey pretty effectively due to its ghost typing + taunt, mons that would normally not be broken by roserade. However this core is weak to stuff like Krook and Chande so Drei is a pretty solid partner n_n.

There can only be one answer here: SUICUNE.

Roserade @ Black Sludge
Ability: Natural Cure
EVs: 240 HP / 252 SpD / 16 Spe
Calm Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Spikes
- Giga Drain
- Sludge Bomb
- Synthesis

Suicune @ Leftovers
Ability: Pressure
EVs: 240 HP / 244 Def / 24 Spe
Bold Nature
- Scald
- Roar
- Sleep Talk
- Rest

Seriously, RoarTalk Suicune + spikes SDef Roserade is one of my all time favorite combinations, and not just for the purpose of this competition. Their defensive synergy is unparalleled, with the two of them alone checking a huge portion of the metagame and switching into each others checks like it ain't even a thing. Seriously, it's amazing to watch these two just eat up attacks that they shouldn't. Better yet, having Spikes down means that RoarTalk Suicune easily picks up the offensive pressure that it can sometimes lack thanks to not having room for Calm Mind.

If you want replays of the core in action, I've got 'em:

(Sorry if these replays don't specifically focus on this core - I don't have a ton of replays with this team.)

It's BoshyGatr Time!

Roserade @ Life Orb
Ability: Natural Cure
EVs: 252 SpA / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
- Spikes
- Sleep Powder
- Sludge Bomb
- Giga Drain
160.gif

Feraligatr @ Life Orb
Ability: Sheer Force
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Jolly Nature
- Dragon Dance
- Waterfall
- Crunch
- Ice Punch

Offensive Spikes Roserade paired with DD Feraligatr. Roserade preys on bulky waters that keep Feraligatr from sweeping and sets up Spikes to facilitate Feraligatr's sweep while sleeping troublesome Pokemon. Giga Drain is ran over Leaf Storm because without any defensive investment and a Life Orb Roserade can be worn down extremely quickly, so Giga Drain mitigates that. Also because popping a Leaf Storm leaves you SUPER limp-dicked if you've already put something to sleep. This way, you can at least threaten with Sludge Bomb otherwise.

Don't know if we're supposed to add a third, but either something that gets Rocks up or can prevent Defog or Rapid Spin (Krook can set up Rocks and Taunt, so you just gotta watch out for Rapid Spin) would be the trick. Or maybe Entei to complete an offensive FWG core.

Roserade @ Black Sludge
Ability: Natural Cure
EVs: 248 HP / 252 SpD / 4 Spe
Calm Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Giga Drain
- Sludge Bomb / Dazzling Gleam / Toxic Spikes
- Spikes
- Synthesis

First thing I do when I see a grass type is think, "What FWG core can I make?" But who needs a full FWG core when you can have the bulkiest piece of shit in all of UU right there covering some of those weaknesses? I don't give a shit about suicune. Alomomola needs to die, and milotic is E rank at the most. Swamp is where it's at. I could be a god and run PuP mega swamp but that leaves me shittily weak to Entei, so here's the newest and best god-tier Swamp set ever (I bet none of you have ever seen this before).

Swampert @ Leftovers
Ability: Damp
EVs: 248 HP / 252 Def / 8 SpD
Impish Nature
- Stealth Rock
- Earthquake
- Ban Scald
- Roar

Haha, here we go. Everyone by now should know how these two compliment each other. Balance is a really dominant playstyle right now, and roserade and swamp are very popular. They defend against common pokes such as Heliolisk, Mamo, Coba, Choice-locked Entei, M-Blastoise (some variants), Choice-locked Chandy, Doublade, Empoleon (at this point I'm just going down the viability rankings thread), M-sharp (w/ out rocks up), I think you get it. That's over a third of the mons in A+ and A, which are the mons (besides S kill yourself suicune) that are supposed to have the fewest checks. To check/counter that many mons is really insane. But this core isn't just about checking offensive/defensive checks, no. It's about setting up hazards and whittling your opponent down. Here is a replay showing how strong this team is with hazards (I lost but hey I made a point and it was really close), especially when your opponent has no hazard control or you remove it.

This core has some trouble with Drei, so dazzling gleam on Roselia can help with that, though it can't exactly switch in on a LO draco (up to 68%). Toxic spikes is really your preference thb

Roserade was a mon initially chosen this week to be a spike stacker, and I can see why. It is really just amazing. With pretty great coverage and decent unboosted offensive stats, it can put in work against unprepared teams.

Swamp is just great in general. With the ability to check so many set-up mons like gatr, doublade, florges, and literally anything that doesn't normally carry grass coverage but likes to set up, swamp can control the battlefield with surprising defensive stats and great HP bulk. I would literally die if only this thing learned wish. A lack of non-passive regen on swamp kinda sucks, and makes it weak to knock off, but seriously what isn't besides acrobatics defiant-boosted Tornadus-I with agility? (Never gonna let you live that down DaSpoofy)

Possible Partners:

  • Cobalion (To take Knock Offs and take advantage of the hazards)
  • Entei (To complete FWG core and have a powerhouse/way to deal damage)
  • Aromatisse/Florges (Wish passing is nice and CM florges is a great wincon)
  • Any wincons (Balance normally needs wincons)
  • Rapid Spinners (No one like hazards wearing down walls)

I think that Krookodile is a very interesting match for Roserade, since the two do a great job of helping each other out.
407.gif

Roserade @ Life Orb
Ability: Natural Cure
EVs: 252 SpA / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
- Spikes
- Sleep Powder
- Sludge Bomb
- Giga Drain

Roserade is great in many different roles; this is only one set that works spectacularly on it, and I mostly chose it because of the offensive nature of its partner. If you're running a more balanced team, like I usually do, a more defensively inclined set is just fine. Anyway, Roserade is very good at setting spikes up, and it can threaten many defensive Pokemon with its STAB moves alone. However, the offensive set still struggles with a number of Pokemon, including Psychic-types and Steel-types, the latter of which are especially troublesome because they take next to nothing from Roserade's STABs. This is where her partner, one of the best offensive Pokemon in the tier right now, comes into the equation.

553.gif

Krookodile @ Dread Plate/Earth Plate
Ability: Intimidate
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 Def / 252 Spe
Jolly Nature
- Earthquake
- Stealth Rock
- Knock Off
- Pursuit

Krookodile is known for many things, but it caught my eye here because of its type synergy with Roserade and its ability to set Stealth Rock up alongside Roserade's Spikes, creating a very good hazard-stacking core. Krookodile dispatches Psychic and Steel-types with ease, and can revenge-kill some of the Fire-types that like to prey on Roserade. This thing forces a lot of switches thanks to its great coverage and above-average power, allowing it to really take advantage of Spikes throughout the course of a game. It can also dismantle some special walls, making it easier for Roserade to eliminate them later. Roserade also does a lot for Krookodile, most notably switching in to special Fairy and Water moves, most notably acting as a very good status absorber with Natural Cure.

These two are a force to be reckoned with, but they aren't without flaws. Neither of these Pokemon can really switch in on Fire-type attacks, and they have a mutual weakness to Ice moves. They also have a hard time switching in to Fighting-type moves as well, despite Roserade's resistance. Mega Blastoise and Suicune can beat Fire-types and some Ice-types, and Mega Blastoise in particular spins opposing hazards away, which is pretty cool. Cobalion takes most Ice attacks like a champion, and together with Roserade can pressure opposing Fairies pretty well, though you'll need another Fighting-check. Chandelure has good synergy with these two as well, and is immune to Fire and Fighting moves while resisting Ice.

Thanks for reading this! Vote for my core and we will build a wall to keep the broken mons from coming in and taking UU Pokemons' jobs!

These two I don't to be a really good pair for each other roserade to take down faired Water-Types and set up Spikes/T-Spikes for Kyurem. Kyurem ccan take on the Dragon Flying and even some Steel-Types that Roserade can't beat on its own. I went with a more offensive sprea d for Roserade T-Spikes works super well with Sub Roost Kyurem letting it even have a better chance of betting stall Spikes can be used in the last slot to punish common switch in/ revenge killers to Rose or Kyurem (EX:Empolean Forrtress Mienshoa Mega Beedrill Florges etc.) Roserade also has the ability to beat Suicune since this Kyurem can't to anything to it except PP stall and beat those Fairy-Type Kyurem hates. Kyurem has the ability of betting Crobat Blissey ( can PP stall it) Mega Amphy krookadile and Mandibuzz all of switch can beat Roserage 1v1. Kyurem also gets use of those T-Spikes Roserade can lay down.I also divide to have a fighting resist for this team Roserade is not meant to be a fighting -Type switch in though Foretres may seem annying for this core Kyurem just PP Stall out of Gyro balls.
Hoped you guys hung in through this long explanation lol :]

Reserving Chandelure ~

Roses and Chandeliers. The most romantic combination ever.

roserade.gif

Roserade @ Black Sludge
Ability: Natural Cure
EVs: 240 HP / 252 SpD / 16 Spe
Calm Nature
- Synthesis
- Toxic Spikes / Spikes
- Giga Drain
- Sleep Powder

chandelure.gif

Chandelure @ Leftovers
Ability: Flash Fire
EVs: 252 SpA / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
- Substitute
- Calm Mind
- Flamethrower
- Shadow Ball

Specially Defensive Roserade & Sub + CM Chandelure form the perfect combination for most balanced teams. Roserade can easily set up Spikes on the bulky Water Pokemon that Chandelure abhors while also being able to cripple common switch-ins to Chandelure including the likes of Hydreigon and Machamp with Sleep Powder. After Roserade's job is done, Chandelure can easily set up a Substitute, a Calm Mind, & can sweep from there.

Roserade @ Life Orb
Ability: Natural Cure
EVs: 252 SpA / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
- Synthesis / Aromatherapy
- Sludge Bomb
- Leaf Storm / Giga Drain
- Spikes

I wanted to do Toxic Spikes Roserade, but it just didn't quite measure up. I figured Offensive Rade works well too. The moves are pretty obvious, the most prominent being Spikes, while Sludge Bomb gives it Fairy Coverage (good for Ampharos [ spoilers? ]) as well as Grass coverage if needed for those pesky... Chestnaughts? Sceptile maybe? It's still good STAB if Leaf Storm/Giga Drain won't cut it. Speaking of which, pick which one you think would work a little more efficiently for your team. Leaf Storm has intense power, threatening Gatr and Mega Swampert with KOs before finishing Set-up, but Giga Drain allows for more sustainability, which means more Spikes. That's also why Synthesis is on there, obviously. Though if Giga Drain is chosen: consider Aromatherapy for further team utility.
Max Speed is chosen to get Spikes up as Fast as possible and Max Special Attack allows Roserade's good Special Attack to become great, at the slight expense of bulk, though its amazing Special Defense is something to marvel at on its own.

Roserade also has insane synergy with Ampharos

tumblr_mxp7xtoMN51t3wi9fo1_250.gif

Ampharos @ Ampharosite
Ability: Static
EVs: 132 HP / 252 SpA / 124 Spe
Modest Nature
- Thunderbolt
- Dragon Pulse
- Focus Blast / Hidden Power [Fire]
- Volt Switch

Ampharos itself is a really great Mega that is often overlooked because of the great number of Dragon and Ground Types which appreciate its typing and subpar speed. It forms amazing VoltTurn cores with mons like Darmanitan which pick up on its low speed and

While Amphy takes the Fire and Flying Types aimed at Roserade, Roserade easily cleans up most of the Ground Types and doesn't fear Florges. Krook is still a problem for both Pokemon, but unless it's Jolly Krook or a good prediction, Roserade does pretty well against it. The slow(ish) Volt Switch also means that Roserade is more likely to get in unscathed, allowing it to hit with more wiggle room, or to set up hazards on a mon that Ampharos just couldn't quite take care of.
The only move idea here is the idea of Hidden Power Fire. It allows this core to hit Steel Types a little harder (and more accurately) with the most notable being Forretress, who otherwise simply Spins unscathed against both. It does mean a little less coverage against Dark Types and Ice Types, but besides Krookodile and Mamoswine, I can't really think of one, and Ampharos shouldn't stay in on them anyways.

Enough with the overrated Pokes. Time to make huge waves with this mini aqua rabbit!

06VfZJu.png

For an offensive team, there's a Pokemon that would set up an Entry Hazard to aid the sweeper's offensive capabilities, and Roserade is a very welcome starting point for this endeavor. This Roserade set is actually more than you could ever ask for (DMT, 2015)--the Speed enough to outrun an Adamant Choice Band Entei and put to sleep, the Special bulk even whilst not investing any Special Defense EVs to take almost any and almost all Special Attack aimed at it, most especially Scald and sponge the burn thanks to Natural Cure. Giga Drain and Sludge Bomb are very mandatory moves, as they can hit for super-effective damage Water- and Grass-types, one of the biggest obstacles for Marill to make huge waves against the opposition.

zmtM00R.png

"Are you kidding me? A Marill?" I'm very serious. Marill can pair up with Roserade pretty well as it can Aqua Jet any Fire-type aiming at Roserade, while any (special) Electric, Grass, and Poison attack can be dealt with Roserade. Marill is considered to be a late-game sweeper thanks to its capability to boost its Attack to astronomical levels with Belly Drum, coupled with its great ability, Huge Power, and start the sweep from there.

As said, Chandelure of any variant (as long as there is Memento!) can help support the pair very well, and you already have a very solid Fire-Water-Grass core.

If you're very skeptical about the pair, there's An Apocalyptic Alleluia waiting for you.
