Umbreon Cofagrigus Defensive Core

Hey guys,
This is my second RMT and this time it's a balanced underused team. This team consists of a dedicated lead, a defensive and offensive core and porygon2 because he's fucking awesome. I was playing around with the idea of cores and the synergy that Umbreon and Cofargrigus bring with their dark and ghost types respectively. And here's the team:

Azelf @ Focus Sash
Trait: Levitate
EVs: 4 HP / 252 SpA / Spe 252
IVs: 0 Att
Timid Nature
- Taunt
- Stealth Rock
- Fire Blast
- Psychic

I always lead with Azelf unless they have Flygon, Victini or another common U-Turner. He has a simple task: to prevent the opponent from setting up Stealth Rock and to set it up himself. His high speed helps him accomplish this as he can outspeed any threat and taunt it, holding on with focus sash if they attack, setting up Stealth Rock and attacking if given the opportunity. Psychic is a high-powered stab move and Fire Blast for coverage. Since I don't have a spinner, Azelf fills an important role in this team. He also takes some pressure off by aiding my sweepers with hazards.

Umbreon @ Leftovers
Trait: Inner Focus
EVs: 252 HP / 4 Def / 252 SpD
Careful Nature
- Heal Bell (originally Toxic)
- Foul Play (originally Payback)
- Wish
- Protect

Umbreon is one half of the defensive core this team is based on. He can wall just about any special attacker in the Underused Tier. I'm running Inner Focus so my team doesn't get ParaHaxed by Togekiss and Synchronize would be redundant since I have Toxic. I have Toxic for residual damage since he cant hit very hard. Payback is to speed up the opponent's fate. Umberon can WishPass pretty well and he can use it to heal himself. Protect is to build up toxic residual damage and for instance healing with Wish. 'Nuff said.

Cofagrigus @ Leftovers
Trait: Mummy
EVs: 248 HP / 252 Def / 8 SpA
IVs: 0 Att
Bold Nature
- Will-O-Wisp
- Haze
- Shadow Ball
- Rest (Originally Pain Split)

If there is one thing i could change it would be this set. His stats are just phenomenal, and his ghost type pairs great with Umbreon's Dark typing. He can burn physical attackers and eliminate stat changes with Haze. Shadow Ball is it's stab move of choice and pain split for recovery, unreliable however. I am considering Rest over Pain Split and then i could run Heal Bell on Umbreon, but these are just ideas.

Porygon2 @ Eviolite
Trait: Trace
EVs: 252 HP / 180 Def / 76 SpD
IVs: 0 Att
Bold Nature
- Discharge
- Ice Beam
- Toxic
- Recover

Ah, Porygon2, it's probably one of my favorite pokemon. Why you ask, he holds the team together. say Cofagrigus gets trapped by a pursuit and my opponent has a physical attacker that i can't handle. This is where Porygon2 shines. He can Trace a good ability, tank any hit and Recover it off while using Toxic for residual damage. BoltBeam gets amazing coverage and his special attack isn't bad at all.

Heracross @ Choice Band
Trait: Guts
EVs: 4 HP / 252 Att / 252 Spe
Adamant Nature
- Close Combat
- Megahorn
- Stone Edge
- Night Slash (Originally Pursuit)
The goal of my Offensive Core is to not get walled. This thing gets statused a ton, and most people will assume I'm running Moxie. Close Combat and Megahorn are powerful Stab moves. Stone Edge for coverage and Pursuit for ghost types.
308.png

Medicham @ Choice Scarf
Trait: Pure Power
EVs: 4 HP / 252 Att / 252 Spe
Jolly Nature
- Hi Jump Kick
- Zen Headbutt
- Ice Punch
- Trick
This is the second half of my Offensive Core. It can revenge kill with great success and cripple walls with Trick. Hi Jump Kick and zen headbutt are its best Stab moves. Ice Punch gets additional coverage and hits Gligar and Flygon really hard.

Thank you for taking the time to read and help me with my team, any advice is deeply appreciated and I understand this team is far from perfect (If it was I wouldn't post this RMT). If anyone could help me with my Cofargrigus that would be great.

Cool team, I like the Medicham a whole lot. I really think you need a more assured way to deal with Ghosts however, considering how dependent you are on Fighting types. Pursuit on Heracross should probably go to Night Slash, as that will 2HKO or OHKO any Ghost type in UU.

I don't think you'll be able to do much better with Defensive Cofagrigus, but that is by no means a bad thing. I would try out Rest on it just for kicks, and replace Toxic on Umbreon to Heal Bell. If that doesn't really work for you then Pain Split is really your only option.

Umbreon should never have Payback, Foul Play is sooo much better. It does huge amounts of damage to any physical attacker (I think it even OHKOs Medicham) and even special attackers will be hurt more by it than Payback.

Hi there, this is a pretty cool team. I'll give a shot at trying to improve it though.

Azelf is pretty good as is, he's got a strong role on the team and is manly. So that's good.

Agreeing that Umbreon should run Foul Play over Payback; Umbreon doesn't do much damage at all, but Foul Play can hit a lot of offensive Pokemon really hard, and this also catches Darmanitan and friends on the switch-in. I would also suggest Heal Bell over Toxic too, for sure. Heal Bell is a really awesome move that would potentially not only wake up Cofag, but also cure the team of status, so if one of the teammates is poisoned or paralyzed (particularly P2), then this is the way to go. If that's that, Cofagrigus can also run Rest over Pain Split to fully heal himself while Umbreon can wake him up and also give him tons of HP with Wish.

P2 is perfect, nice job with that.

Heracross should run Night Slash over Pursuit. This allows you to nail defensive Cofagrigus and Dusclops (lol) as they try to burn you and hit them really, really hard. Pursuit is relatively unimportant since you're not trapping anything really.

Medicham seems really good as is.

Just my two cents, and I hope I helped.

Summary of changes:

Payback------->Foul Play
Toxic-------->Heal Bell
Pain Split---------->Rest (maybe)
Pursuit---------->Night Slash

Hello There!~

Firstly, nice team. However, I believe I have some improvements for you ^_^
The thing that strikes me first is Rest on Cofagrigus. I feel like this is a bad idea, since even though you have umbreon, using Rest is a BIG liability. Heal Bell has only 8 PP, and even then, There are a lot of common taunt users. I feel like pain split is better than rest, as Umbreon is going to be really pressured to get a heal bell off when Cofag is sleeping. Although, that's just from my experience.
The second that really strikes me is having Heracross and Medicham as your choice users. Personally, I see this as pretty redundant. Medicham, I'll admit, is usable, having Pure Power and nice moves. Yet, it's base 80 speed isn't that usable for a scarf; I mean Chandelure is one thing; but Medicham is another. Even 85 is barely getting by (Heracross and Nidoking being the prime users), but 80 is outsped by all common scarfers, bar chandy. Heracross should generally be your go-to as well. I really think Medicham should be replaced. I have a couple different options:

First Option: If you still want to keep another fighting type, I'd say scarf mienshao. It's the fastest, if not one of the fastest scarfers in UU. Plus, it can even run HP ice to help take care of Gligar (2hko if I remember correctly). Plus, it's mienshao. you'd get cool points. Plus, Mienshao has U-turn for scouting if need be.

Second Option: Scarf Flygon/Victini. I'm putting them together due to speed tier. Both are very fast, only outsped by scarf mienshao. Flygon, however, is walled by gligar to hell and back. Victini can run a mixed scarf set, (or at least I think so; I personally don't use it very often) and probably handle gligar fairly. pure physical scarf victini is a very dangerous pokemon though, so it's important enough to consider. although victini might rack up your weaknesses... so meh.

Going on, I want to suggest that you replace Azelf. Suicide leads are a bit ineffective in the current metagame; they can be stopped by two prio-taunt users (Sableye and Tornadus) and leave your team 5-6 at a disadvantage. And, In my personal opinion, Medicham just needs to go

So, Third option involving Medicham: Switch Medicham to Sp Def Rhyperior (or any rhyperior you wish really, I just like sp def)
and switch Azelf to a bulky water of your choice. I suggest Blastoise or Milotic; the former can spin away those pesky spikes/SR (although those don't seem to be much of a problem), and the latter can handle status and has recovery.

Now, you have a way bulkier team that before. Hopefully, I didn't just ruin your team idea, but I really hope that I made your team better and more effective. Now, just to recap, the above are all suggestions; if you think I'm crazy, that's okay. (you'd be right, anyways...)

PS: try out http://old.marriland.com/black_white/team_builder to compare your team before/after my changes, see if you like it or not.

First I'd like to thank you for helping me with my team! and I agree with your decision to put Pain Split over Rest (I had Pain Split initially).
As for the Heracross Medicham core, it wasn't working very well so I basically completely redid it. This is what I changed
Heracross @ Choice Scarf
Trait: Moxie
EVs: 4 HP / 252 Att / 252 Spe
Jolly Nature
- Close Combat
- Megahorn
- Stone Edge
- Night Slash (Originally Pursuit)
The goal of my Offensive Core is to not get walled. This thing gets statused a ton, and most people will assume I'm running Moxie. Close Combat and Megahorn are powerful Stab moves. Stone Edge for coverage and Pursuit for ghost types.

Medicham @ Expert Belt
Trait: Pure Power
EVs: 4 HP / 252 Att / 252 Spe
Adamant Nature
- Hi Jump Kick
- Zen Headbutt
- Ice Punch
- Fake Out
My thought process here is Medicham can come in on any of Heracrosse's main counters (Crobat, Gligar, Qwilfish) and use Fake Out, bringing him into his OHKO range. Then Moxie Heracross comes in and just ruins their team.
I was feeling Azelf was dead weight and I'll test Miliotic and Blastoise
Thanks again for the help! I'm feeling better about this team already!

Fake Out on Medicham would be much much better off being Thunder Punch. Medicham can't do jack squat to things like Slowbro with its current moves, and Thunder Punch helps round out your coverage.
