[SET COMMENTS]
Armed with a superb defensive typing, excellent mixed bulk, one of the best abilities in the game, and an extremely disruptive support movepool, Toxapex entrenches itself as a staple defensive piece in the metagame. These traits allow Toxapex to counter several dangerous Pokemon, such as Zamazenta, Mega Charizard Y, and Urshifu-R. Scald lets Toxapex reliably spread burn onto several Toxic-immune Pokemon, notably Melmetal, Ferrothorn, and Kingambit. On the other hand, Knock Off can remove important items from the likes of Zapdos, Moltres, and Melmetal. Toxic combines with Scald or Knock Off to make Toxapex quite challenging to switch into and allows it to ruin threats such as Roaring Moon, Ogerpon-W, and Moltres. Toxapex is also the tier's best user of Toxic Spikes, which are very challenging for common Pokemon like Great Tusk, Raging Bolt, and Ogerpon-W to deal with. Haze allows Toxapex to sit on boosting threats such as Volcarona, Zamazenta, and Iron Valiant. Recover keeps Toxapex healthy while staying in battle, combining with Regenerator to make Toxapex extremely hard to wear down. Heavy-Duty Boots allows Toxapex to pivot into entry hazards without fear of being worn down, letting it more easily check threats such as Mega Charizard Y. Rocky Helmet can be used to chip physical attackers such as Zamazenta and Hisuian Samurott while also punishing U-turn attempts from the likes of Mega Lopunny, Mega Scizor, and Urshifu-R. Black Sludge gives Toxapex passive recovery, allowing it to better stay healthy versus opponents such as Volcarona and Mega Lopunny, and it has niche use versus Trick users such as Iron Valiant. The given EV spread allows Toxapex to take a +2 Power Whip from Ogerpon-W at full health, while the rest of the EVs are dumped into Special Defense to improve matchups versus Mega Charizard Y and Volcarona.
Toxapex is a staple on bulkier playstyles thanks to its absurd longevity and ability to force progress through spreading chip damage. Gliscor is a notable teammate, as it has great defensive synergy with Toxapex; it appreciates Toxapex checking Water-types such as Urshifu-R and Hisuian Samurott, while in return it deals with Electric-types such as Raging Bolt and Zapdos. The two are also generally hard to break thanks to their immense longevity when paired together, and they can outlast many common threats such as Landorus-T, Ogerpon-W, and Great Tusk if played well. Toxapex does well on hazard stack teams, as it forces quite a few switches, uses Knock Off to remove Heavy-Duty Boots from foes such as Great Tusk, Terapagos, and Zapdos, and punishes many of the tier's hazard removal options with Toxic or a Scald burn. Ferrothorn is an exemplary partner that can set Stealth Rock and Spikes while also checking certain Grass-types that Toxapex has to be very careful around, most notably Ogerpon-W. Gholdengo is another excellent partner, as it checks dangerous Psychic-types like Tapu Lele and Mega Medicham and prevents opposing hazard removal thanks to Good as Gold and its Ghost typing. Gholdengo, as well as the previously mentioned Ferrothorn, appreciate Toxapex pivoting into dangerous Fire-types like Mega Charizard Y and Volcarona. Slow-paced, bulky wincons, such as Swords Dance Gliscor, bulky Volcarona, and Calm Mind Clefable, appreciate Toxapex spreading chip damage and synergize very well with Toxic Spikes, as they become very hard to beat when the opponent's team is getting slowly worn down while they stay healthy with their recovery moves and boost up.
