Draft Toucannon

Status
Not open for further replies.
[overview]
**Draft Order**: Round 8

**Price Range**: 1 point

**Overview**:
Toucannon is a final-round pick that serves as a niche wallbreaker and late-game cleaner, but it fails to do so effectively in most cases. Boasting a high Attack, it can certainly break many defensive cores with its moves that make use of Skill Link, and it can be a nuisance with Beak Blast and Knock Off. Unfortunately, despite its colorful movepool and great utility moves, its poor bulk and disappointing Speed tier do not allow it to make any use of them. It should only be drafted as a final pick if the draft functions well without it, since it's realistically going to warm up the bench in most games.

[strategy comments]
Common Roles
========
**Wallbreaker**: Toucannon's high Attack stat and varied movepool means it can act as a good wallbreaker, but very occasionally. While it lacks good Normal-type STAB moves, STAB Brave Bird coupled with coverage to hit Steel-types in Temper Flare and Brick Break allows it to break some defensive cores. Knock Off and U-turn pair nicely together to get rid of a big threat's item and get itself out of its bad matchups, but it is often too slow and frail to use them properly.

Common Moves
========
**Primary STAB Moves**: Brave Bird, Beak Blast, Boomburst, Acrobatics, Facade

**Setup Moves**: Swords Dance, Flame Charge

**Utility Moves**: Roost, Encore, U-turn, Knock Off, Substitute

**Coverage Moves**: Bullet Seed, Rock Blast, Temper Flare, Brick Break, Gunk Shot, Throat Chop, Seed Bomb

Niche Moves
========
**Tailwind**: If Toucannon can survive a hit or outspeed a Pokemon to set up Tailwind, it can somewhat bypass its low Speed tier to break opposing teams and stop revenge killers more easily. Tailwind can also be used to support the rest of the team and allow them to invest into other stats rather than Speed. Nevertheless, Toucannon often struggles to get Tailwind up due to its poor bulk.

Common Items
========
**Heavy-Duty Boots**: Heavy-Duty Boots ignores Toucannon's weakness to Stealth Rock, providing it with more longevity and the ability to switch in as well as set up more safely.

Niche Items
========
**Damage-boosting Items**: Items such as Expert Belt and Choice Band make use of Toucannon's wide-ranging movepool while maximizing its damage output. Life Orb is also very useful, as it takes advantage of Sheer Force

**Choice Scarf**: Choice Scarf lets Toucannon outspeed many foes to get a surprise KO, making it capable of revenge killing, pivoting out of bad matchups, and serving as a late-game cleaner with enough chip.

**Focus Sash**: Toucannon's inability to be a fast glass cannon or bulky attacker means it tends to get outsped by most Pokemon and OHKOed by most attacks. Focus Sash allows it to survive longer than it is expected to and get a hit off on faster Pokemon.

Tera
========
To be frank, while Tera can help Toucannon, it is almost always heavily outclassed by other secondary Tera Captains at its price. You will always have better Tera Captain options over Toucannon.

Draft Strategy
========
Toucannon is exclusively an offensive Pokemon and fits on teams that are self-sufficient without it. It can have a few favorable matchups, but that requires a lot of smart pivoting to get it in safely, and these favorable matchups are few and far between.

**A Functioning Team**: Toucannon's minimal cost and viability should be more than enough to stop you from building a whole team around it. It typically fits on teams that already have their offensive pieces in their respective places, since it can add a little bit more offense when the opportunity presents itself.

Checks and Counters
========
**Steel-types**: Toucannon fails at doing any real damage to Steel-types on its own, even with the super effective coverage moves it has. Steel types like Hisuian Goodra, Jirachi, and Corviknight are some Pokemon that check it well.

**Electric-types**: Electric-type Pokemon like Zapdos, Jolteon, and Rotom-W are huge threats to Toucannon as a result of them resisting its Flying-type STAB moves, and they can freely use Volt Switch on it. This means it can get picked off early and provide the opposing team with momentum.

**Wallbreakers**: Toucannon is outsped by almost every offensive threat, which accompanied with its mediocre bulk leaves it susceptible to being revenge killed quite often. Most wallbreakers are faster or bulkier than it, which can prevent it from getting any hits off. A few examples are Dragonite, Thundurus-T, and Weavile.

**Status**: Being afflicted with burn, poison, or paralysis can take Toucannon out of the game completely, hindering its wallbreaking abilities and taking away from its already-nonexistent longevity with burn and poison.

**Overview**: [overview]
A very cool route 1 bird with a unique signature move that unfortunately does not meet the expectations we all obviously have.
Toucannon is a very late round pick that serves as a niche Wallbreaker and late game cleaner, but fails to do so effectively in most cases. Boasting a high attack stat of 120 it can certainly break many defensive cores with its moves that make use of skill link, these being bullet seed and rock blast, and it can be a nuisance with beak blast and knock off. Unfortunately, despite it's colourful Movepool and great utility moves, its poor bulk and disappointing speed tier do not allow it to make any use of them, usually dying before it gets to do anything. Beak blast, while a fun move, is only really going to burn one Pokemon, and Knock off will only get rid of one item. In addition, a special attack stat of 75 prevents Toucannon from benefiting from its great special Movepool even with sheer force. Its typing is nothing to write home about either, while flying STAB is very valuable in draft, being weak to rocks is very detrimental when considering its bulk. Moreover, its secondary typing in normal does not allow it to take fighting moves comfortably to live and hit back. The only thing that comes from it is the immunity to ghost. Toucannon wishes it was any other Flying type, and it honestly feels like we were cheated by having this wide of a Movepool and these great abilities on Toucannon. this is all filler / dex info It should only be drafted as your last pick, and only if you have a solid draft that can function well without it since realistically its going to warm up your bench in 99% of games despite being your favourite.

Common Roles
========
**Wallbreaker**: Toucannon’s high attack stat and varied movepool means it can act as a good Wallbreaker, but very occasionally. While missing any good normal STAB moves, flying STAB in Brave Bird coupled with Steel coverage in Temper Flare and Brick Break allows Toucannon to actually break some defensive cores, key word being some. Skill link means Toucannon can afford to run damage boosting items in place of loaded dice and still hit all of its bullet seeds and rock blasts. Without skill link it would never run dice anyway Knock Off and U-turn pair nicely together to get rid of a big threat's item and get out of its bad matchups, but it is often too slow and too frail to do any of those things properly. Its slow speed stat can be made use of in trick room, allowing it to invest in bulk instead of speed and break with a life orb or choice band set. Trick room shouldn't really be mentioned unless it can set it itself

**Special Wallbreaker** Although its Special Attack is much worse, a choice specs Toucannon set will surely catch many people off guard, showing off its great normal special STAB in Boomburst paired up with sheer force boosted STAB Hurricanes, and sheer force boosted Overheat or Heat wave as they are great coverage moves. However, it won't be able to do much besides that in almost all cases since most teams will be able to naturally handle a specially offensive Toucannon without much thought. Moved the end of the above wallbreaker set to its own set, although i think this is too niche regardless, see what qc2 says

**Late game cleaner Revenge Killer**: As mentioned Toucannon’s speed tier is a very potent and common issue it faces, therefore a scarf aids it in cleaning up in the late game as long as enough chip has been dealt to the opposing team. Also, life orb 4 attack sets can clean up in a trick room mode only if the necessary chip damage has been dealt.

Common Moves
========
**Primary STAB Moves**: Brave Bird, Beak Blast, Hurricane, Boomburst, Hyper Voice, outclassed by boomburst Air Slash, Acrobatics, Facade

**Setup Moves**: Swords Dance, Flame Charge

**Utility Moves**: Roost, Encore, U-turn, Knock Off, Substitute

**Coverage Moves**: Bullet Seed, Rock Blast, Temper Flare, Brick Break, Gunk Shot, Overheat, Heat Wave, Flash Cannon, Throat Chop, Seed Bomb

Niche Moves
========
**Endure**: Can only really be used with a Custap berry to get huge damage on a Pokemon faster than it because it is highly likely to die to most moves You don't mention custap berry in niche items & it wants boots 99% of the time anyway

**Endeavour**: Paired with endure and Custap berry, or focus sash to get a dangerous threat down to 1 hp

**Tailwind**: If somehow Toucannon can live a hit or outspeed a Pokemon and set up Tailwind, it can somewhat bypass its low speed tier and break opposing teams more easily with Tailwind, and potentially stopping revenge killers that would normally outspeed. Tailwind can also be used to support the rest of the team and allow them to invest into bulk or offence rather than speed. Nevertheless, ?

Common Items
========
**Heavy-Duty Boots**: Heavy-Duty Boots ignores Toucannon’s weakness to Stealth Rock, providing it with more longevity and the ability to switch in as well as set up more safely.

**Life Orb**: This makes use of its wide-ranging Movepool while maximising its damage output. Life Orb is very useful as it means Toucannon is not locked into one move and it lends itself better to mixed sets. Move to niche, anything not boots is niche on this mon

**Choice Scarf**: Choice Scarf helps Toucannon to relatively outspeed a good chunk of draft teams to get a surprise OHKO on a faster Pokemon, making it capable of revenge killing , pivoting out of bad matchups, and double as a late game cleaner with enough chip. See note on life orb

Niche Items
========
**Choice Specs**: Can actually, in rare cases, let Toucannon take advantage of it’s great special STAB moves and coverage moves coupled with Sheer Force to deal massive damage.

**Choice Band**: With a choice band Toucannon is most likely only getting 1 kill, 2 if its lucky, before it is revenge killed. But getting the absolute maximum amount of damage from Toucannon can possibly get rid of a Pokemon that threatens its team to allow them to function and play their roles more freely. A guaranteed 5 hits of Banded Bullet Seed can obliterate bulky waters that run across every draft team, and Banded STAB Brave Bird can break many cores due to how valuable flying STAB tends to be in draft.

**Focus Sash**: Toucannon’s inability to be a fast glass cannon, or bulky attacker means it tends to get outsped by most pokemon and OHKO’d by most attacks. Focus Sash allows it to live longer than it is expected to and get a hit off on faster pokemon. While this only means it lives 1 more turn than normal, it can make use of that with endeavour to take a big threat to 1 hp, or Beak Blast a strong STAB move since it can actually be hard to switch in to in a few situations.

**Resistance Berries**: Toucannon is not bulky enough to live STAB moves that it is weak to even with resistance berries, but on very rare occasions, Toucannon can bait an ice shard or volt switch, which it is actually good at doing, and live with either a Wacan or Yache berry to then get a massive hit off.

**Damage-Boosting Items**: Toucannon appreciates being able to still profit from its wide movepool and not taking damage while attacking, in return for a slight reduction in damage compared to Life Orb.

Tera
========
To be frank, Toucannon is not a good secondary Tera captain choice, let alone a main Tera captain in regular draft format. However, Tera helps Toucannon, but it is almost always heavily outclassed by other secondary Tera Captains at its price. quite a lot and makes it a usable Pokemon to some degree. Allowing it to flip its typing in unfavourable matchups, hence why Tera Ground is quite common. This allows it to be immune to Electric moves, and hit back with a super effective Tera Blast Ground, which can also hit what would be its checks and counters in Steel types for super effective. Tera Normal is useful for special sets due to boosted STAB Boombursts, and Tera Steel or Fairy are good general Tera types for Toucannon to fix its weak defensive profile.

Draft Strategy
========
Toucannon is exclusively an offensive Pokemon and fits teams that are self-sufficient without it, already having a main and secondary Wallbreaker(s) and Sweeper(s), slotting in as the niche Wallbreaker or Sweeper that features very sporadically throughout the season. It can definitely have a few favourable matchups and with Tera Toucannon can take the role of a more dangerous breaker and a threat that the opponent might have to consider. However, there are many reasons why Toucannon is generally not a viable Pokemon, and honestly Consequently, one must consider these factors when it comes to building a draft team that allows Toucannon to function well.

**Entry Hazard Removal**: Toucannon’s weakness to Stealth Rock prevents it from doing what it wants to do, which is to deal huge damage to opposing teams. It also limits Toucannon’s opportunities to switch in and live a hit from any attack. In addition, it being a flying type that lacks defog can present the team with a big weakness to hazards. Therefore, pairing it with excellent hazard removal options like Great Tusk, Iron Treads, Excadrill, and Terapagos let it and the team switch in more freely, as well as, making it so that Toucannon does not always have to run Heavy-Duty Boots.

**Entry Hazard Setters**: Toucannon is unlikely to get a chance to set up in most matchups, and although 120 base attack is quite high, it does not always live up to the standards set by current Generation 9 Pokemon. Thus, Entry Hazard Setters that can get hazards up on the opposing team are very valuable, forcing foes to take hazard chip damage. In turn, easing the job on Toucannon to break sturdy defensive cores and sweep late game. Some brilliant Hazard Setters that work well alongside Toucannon are Glimmora, Hisuian Samurott, and Sandy Shocks.

**High-Tier Tera Captain**: For Toucannon to be able to function as a decent Pokemon in draft it is going to likely need tera. Therefore, the other Tera captain must be a high-tier pokemon that is allowed to tera like Annihilape, Raging Bolt, and Iron Bundle (When it can tera) so that the secondary tera cap slot does not feel as wasted on Toucannon as it normally would. This is because they would fill a huge gap in the team and cover holes caused by Toucannon.

**Flexible Offensive Threats**: Toucannon appreciates Pokemon that can function as a Wallbreaker or Cleaner in any given matchup, as it lessens the burden on it and gives it more freedom in terms of what set it wants to run. This means Toucannon is not affixed to one role on the team. Pokemon that are capable of this and pair well with Toucannon include Iron Valiant, Sneasler, Darkrai.

**Pivots**: As mentioned before, Toucannon’s poor bulk and typing struggle to give it any longevity. Thus, switching it in safely is very important in getting it to perform to its best and avoid taking any chip damage. Faster, offensive or support pivots that can chip foes and switch out like Iron Crown, Tornadus-T, Meowscarada compliment Toucannon, and so do slower, bulkier pivots that can absorb hits and let Toucannon switch in unharmed like Galarian Slowking.

**Special Wallbreakers**: Despite Toucannon’s great special movepool and Sheer Force it struggles to do any real damage to specially defensive Pokemon. Because of this Toucannon appreciates being able to pivot out into a special Wallbreaker that can take them on, for example: Chi-Yu, Hoopa-Unbound, and Kyurem.

**Steel-Type Counters**: Toucannon struggles against pretty much all viable steel types, plain and simple. Its STABs are resisted and its coverage in Temper Flare and Brick Break generally don't do enough damage either due to their average base powers of 75. Thus, Toucannon very much appreciates Pokemon that can get rid of Steel types, in order for it to break and/or sweep the rest of the opposing team, if it actually gets in a position to do so. Therefore, Pokemon such as Magnezone, Heatran, and Urshifu-R are excellent partners.

Toucannon is a 1 point mon and should not come to very many games. Most of these roles are extremely niche or already part of a functioning team. If you're gonna list any other points, just say "a team that functions well without toucannon" and explain how they can occasionally help each other, but most of that is covered in the intial draft strategy paragraph. (For examples see hisuian zorua / sudowoodo / quilladin analyses) I kept hazard removal regardless though since it's still pretty important for mons weak to rocks

Checks and Counters
========
**Steel Types**: As mentioned before, Toucannon fails at doing any real damage to Steel types on its own even with the super effective coverage moves it has. In most cases it would have to Tera Ground or Fire to do acceptable damage, meaning without Tera Steel types become an even bigger issue. Steel types like Goodra-H, Jirachi, and Corvinight are some that fit that category.

**Electric Types**: Electric type Pokemon, for example Zapdos, Jolteon, Rotom-Wash, are huge threats to Toucannon as a result of them resisting its flying STAB moves and the fact that Toucannon is one of the biggest baits for volt switch in Draft. This means it can get picked off early and provide the opposing team with momentum.

**Faster Pokemon**: Toucannon’s mediocre speed leaves it quite susceptible to being revenge-killed by a lot of Pokemon faster than it. Iron Boulder, Thundurus-T, and Weavile are some just some of those that do. Strong priority users such as Kingambit, Scizor, Mamoswine, and the aforementioned Raging Bolt pose a big threat to Toucannon because they can pick it off before it does anything. This is like every offensive pokemon

Add wallbreakers in general instead of faster pokemon

**Status**: Being afflicted with burn, poison, or paralysis can take Toucannon out of the game completely, hindering its Wallbreaking abilities, and taking away from its already non-existent longevity with burn and poison.

However, in many cases its Special Attack may still be too low to cause any problems to opposing teams. this works if ur name is swellow, this shit has no speed so lets not over exaggerate what this does

**Revenge Killer**: As mentioned Toucannon’s speed tier is a very potent and common issue it faces, therefore a scarf aids it in cleaning up in the late game and revenge killing as long as enough chip has been dealt to the opposing team. It no.

Common Moves
========
**Primary STAB Moves**: Brave Bird, Beak Blast, Hurricane, Boomburst, Air Slash, Acrobatics, Facade please stop the overcooking, this is a toucannon

**Setup Moves**: Swords Dance, Flame Charge

**Utility Moves**: Roost, Encore, U-turn, Knock Off, Substitute

**Coverage Moves**: Bullet Seed, Rock Blast, Temper Flare, Brick Break, Gunk Shot, Overheat, Heat Wave, Flash Cannon, Throat Chop, Seed Bomb

Niche Moves
========
Nevertheless, Toucannon will often struggle to get Tailwind up due to its poor bulk.

Common Items
========
**Heavy-Duty Boots**: Heavy-Duty Boots ignores Toucannon’s weakness to Stealth Rock, providing it with more longevity and the ability to switch in as well as set up more safely.

Niche Items
========

**Life Orb**: This makes use of its wide-ranging Movepool while maximising its damage output. Life Orb is very useful as it means Toucannon is not locked into one move and it lends itself better to mixed sets. change this to damage-boosting items

**Choice Specs**: Can actually, in rare cases, let Toucannon take advantage of it’s great special STAB moves and coverage moves coupled with Sheer Force to deal massive damage. no spc

**Choice Band**: With a choice band Toucannon is able to output the absolute maximum amount of damage, which can possibly get rid of a Pokemon that threatens its team to allow them to function and play their roles more freely. too niche for a 1pt mon

**Focus Sash**: Toucannon’s inability to be a fast glass cannon, or bulky attacker means it tends to get outsped by most Pokemon and OHKO’d by most attacks. Focus Sash allows it to live longer than it is expected to and get a hit off on faster Pokemon.

**Resistance Berries**: Toucannon is not bulky enough to live STAB moves that it is weak to even with resistance berries, but on very rare occasions, Toucannon can bait an ice shard or volt switch, which it is actually good at doing, and live with either a Wacan or Yache berry to then get a massive hit off. too niche for a 1pt mon

Tera
========
To be frank, while Tera helps Toucannon quite a lot, it is almost always heavily outclassed by other secondary Tera Captains at its price. If you want to Tera Toucannon then you would be glad to hear that with Tera it is able to flip its typing in unfavourable matchups, hence why Tera Ground is quite common. This allows it to be immune to Electric moves, and hit back with a super effective Tera Blast Ground, which can also hit what would be its checks and counters in Steel types for super effective. Tera Normal is useful for special sets due to Tera-boosted STAB Boombursts, and Tera Steel or Fairy are good general Tera types for Toucannon to fix its weak defensive profile. You will always have better Tera Captain options over Toucannon.

Draft Strategy
========
Toucannon is exclusively an offensive Pokemon and fits teams that are self-sufficient without it, already having a main and secondary Wallbreaker(s) and Sweeper(s), slotting in as the niche Wallbreaker or Sweeper that features very sporadically. It can definitely have a few favourable matchups. However, there are many reasons why Toucannon is generally not a viable Pokemon. Therefore, one must consider these factors when it comes to building a draft team that allows Toucannon to function well.

Therefore, pairing it with excellent hazard removal options like Great Tusk, Iron Treads, Excadrill, and Terapagos let it and the team switch in more freely, as well as, making it so that Toucannon does not always have to run Heavy-Duty Boots.
a functional team has entry hazard removal

**A Functioning Team**: Toucannon's minimal cost and viability should me more than enough to stop you from building a whole draft team around it. It should be a very-niche addition to a team that operates completely fine without it and has all of its requirements met before a last pick is made. It typically fits on teams that already have their offensive pieces in their respective places where it can add a little bit more too when the opportunity presents itself.

Checks and Counters
========
**Steel Types**: Toucannon fails at doing any real damage to Steel types on its own even with the super effective coverage moves it has.

**Wallbreakers**: Toucannon is outsped by almost every offensive threat, and that accompanied with its mediocre bulk leaves it susceptible to being revenge killed quite often. Most Wallbreakers are faster and/or bulkier than Toucannon which can prevent it from getting any hits off, and many have priority options unlike Toucannon. A few examples are Dragonite, Thundurus-T, and Weavile.

**Status**: Being afflicted with burn, poison, or paralysis can take Toucannon out of the game completely, hindering its Wallbreaking abilities, and taking away from its already non-existent longevity with burn and poison.

[overview]
**Draft Order**: Round 8

**Price Range**: 1-2 points

**Overview**:
Toucannon is a very late final round pick that serves as a niche Wallbreaker and late game cleaner, but fails to do so effectively in most cases. Boasting a high attack stat of 120 it can certainly break many defensive cores with its moves that make use of skill link, and it can be a nuisance with beak blast and knock off. Unfortunately, despite it's colourful Movepool and great utility moves, its poor bulk and disappointing speed tier do not allow it to make any use of them. It should only be drafted as your last pick, and only if you have a solid draft that can function well without it since realistically its going to warm up your bench in 99% of games.

Toucannon is exclusively an offensive Pokemon and fits on teams that are self-sufficient without it. It can definitely have a few favourable favorable matchups, (AC) but that requires a lot of smart pivoting to get it in safely, and these favourable favorable matchups are few and far between.

**A Functioning Team**: Toucannon's minimal cost and viability should me be more than enough to stop you from building a whole draft team around it. It should be a very-niche addition to a team that operates completely fine without it and has all of its requirements met before a last pick is made. It typically fits on teams that already have their offensive pieces in their respective places, (AC) since where it can add a little bit more too offense when the opportunity presents itself.

Checks and Counters
========
**Steel TypesSteel-types**: Toucannon fails at doing any real damage to Steel types Steel-types on its own, (AC) even with the super effective coverage moves it has. In most cases it would have to Tera Ground or Fire to do acceptable damage, meaning without Tera Steel types become an even bigger issue. Steel types like Goodra-H like Hisuian Goodra, Jirachi, and Corvinight Corviknight are some Pokemon that fit that category check it well.

**Electric TypesElectric-types**: Electric type Electric-type Pokemon (RC) for example like Zapdos, Jolteon, Rotom-Wash (RC) and Rotom-W are huge threats to Toucannon as a result of them resisting its flying Flying-type STAB moves, (AC) and the fact that Toucannon is one of the biggest baits for volt switch in Draft they can freely use Volt Switch on it. This means it can get picked off early and provide the opposing team with momentum.

**Wallbreakers**: Toucannon is outsped by almost every offensive threat, and that which accompanied with its mediocre bulk leaves it susceptible to being revenge killed quite often. Most wallbreakers are faster and/or bulkier than Toucannon it, (AC) which can prevent it from getting any hits off (RC) and many have priority options unlike Toucannon. dont really see why this is relevant, toucannon has 0 speed A few examples are Dragonite, Thundurus-T, and Weavile.

**Status**: Being afflicted with burn, poison, or paralysis can take Toucannon out of the game completely, hindering its wallbreaking abilities (RC) and taking away from its already non-existent already-nonexistent longevity with burn and poison.

I think I have fixed everything. Is there anything else I need to do, like changing the thread title or tagging someone? I changed the tag to "Done" and put 1/1 GP in the thread title.
