»»————- Welcome to the Sprite Animation Wormhole! ————-««
Within this tiny pocket of the forums we shall join hand in hand to collectively witness the mutilation and mobilization of tiny interlocking segments of digital matter.
Hi! I’m Tooni, known also as TrippyTooni. I joined the Smogon Sprite project quite some time ago, but as of lately, I’ve been wanting to get out there, so why not start with a thread? I’m not sure whether to make monthly or biweekly updates, we’ll have to see where my work-life balance takes us. In this thread, every major update will hopefully have at least 3-5 new animations with a short story/description, and if we‘re lucky, I’ll have some extras to share!
A couple animations of mine are currently in Showdown!, along with one sprite. Some animations are not yet implemented.
Let’s start strong with the first animation I made!
- Cramorant -
…no
I will fully animate the Gulping and Gorging forms at a later date, but as of right now it is the bottom of my priority. For now, I have WIPs loosely based on the current animation to show for this. They aren’t in Showdown yet.
- Gigantamax Cinderace -

What a toughie, but oh-so much fun. Animating the fire was my favourite part, which I decided to do first.
This animation was hard to make, and I’m proud of it. Gigantamaxes deserve animations as grand as they are, after all.
It took me a little less than 2 weeks working on and off a couple hours per day to finish the frontsprite. Getting to have everything loop properly was not easy, balancing multiples of eight constantly. This probably also is going to be the last sprite I shiny on my own for a while…
After this point are animations that have not yet been added, but will be.
- Hisuian Sliggoo -
I LOVED animating those antennae! Around the point in time I started working on this, I was still resting my wrist following a minor road injury. I decided at some point, the boredom of not animating anything at all outweighed the pain, and thus this adorable little slime came to existence. I like to think me needing to stay in bed and chill as often as I was influenced the way this animation runs. That spacious shell is making me jealous…
- Alolan Raticate (Backsprite) -
The current front sprite for Alolan Raticate was done by NoelleMBrooks, I was tasked with completing the back’s animation. Backsprites tend to be very limiting to work with, but in the end it DOES have its benefits. Backsprites are just as important as frontsprites, because us animators won’t be able to enjoy our own animations unless we’re lucky enough to queue up against someone. In most cases, it’s the only way we’ll be seeing our favourites move. Maybe someone out there loves Faticate this much. If you’re an Alolan Raticate lover, we’ve got your back! :)
- Tadbulb -
Naw, little guy. They will reach the moon someday. The newest of my completed works, and the smallest. I kind of like these small sprites. They’re a refresher, a mint after the big steak. Most people are never going to see these animations outside of the most popular tiers, but maybe that’s a good thing. I’d shriek in fear of what unfathomable strategies could possibly hide behind those innocent faces.

- Nihilego (WIP) -

This one still needs some more time to cook. It’s not quite done, and it doesn’t look quite right, but it’ll be the first feature in my next update.
- Scream Tail (QC by G.E.Z.) -
huh? thought this was an animation thread? I was still in college when I did this, my mental health was HORRIBLE in college. With that in mind, I’m genuinely not sure what happened for me to end up spriting this BEFORE finishing Cramorant, also because I had no other pixel art experience prior…With the recent sprite+anim update however, this currently is the main ingame representation of Scream Tail across Showdown. Daunting to realize, but feels nice to know this is what came of what started back then.
With this, that’s all I have to present for today. Next up, backsprites, Mega Gyarados, Bellibolt, and Zygarde 100%.
Thanks for reading my post! :) until next time~
