Theme Teams

You can do teams based on color, weight, height, specific characteristics (like the look of Hair, or open mouths). You can also mimic teams that people from the anime use, like May or Paul.

My OU team is always my Cynthia team: Spiritomb,Roserade,Lucario,Garchomp,Gastrodon, Milotic. I've really just found it more enjoyable to work within the restrictions and still be effective. I was considering proposing a tournament in which every participant uses the team of a different game/anime/manga trainer, perhaps when tournament applications open up again.

I've always liked the idea of making theme teams, but I am really bad at team building so they always suck.

I've fought a team rocket themed team before. It had Meowth/Weezing/Cacturne/Arcanine(Growly)/Wobbuffet/Seviper

themed teams are fine but imo if you want to be the best competitive battler you can be, you shouldn't theme just for theming. you should only theme if you think that it will give you a better chance of winning than a non-themed team. that's my competitive approach anyways.

I made a workable Brock team once. Blissey and Crobat are all I remember from it though; it was a very long time ago.

That's an awesome idea Cythnia!

I just made a theme team around my favourite game, Breath of Fire 2. It's okay, it still needs some work though.

I used

Salamence - Ryu
Infernape - Sten
Togekiss - Nina
Blastoise - Rand
Lucario - Katt
Celebi - Spar

I use theme teams because it helps narrow the Pokemon I can use effectively, as well as force me to get a bit creative with movesets and general use. That, and a lack of such limits usually results in me getting completely overwhelmed by the number of Pokemon to choose from. >_<

Making theme teams is a great way to kick back after a long and boring win streak. I like making teams of obsucre anime characters, that i've only ever heard of through serebii. Like Tyson, the kid with the Meowth in boots who beats Ash at some point. Meowth/Shiftry/Sceptile/Donphan/Hariyama/Metegross team. Not too shaby for an anime character. Did pretty dang well, and confused many a person wih my Meowth (who 2HKOed quite a bit).

I have three themed UU teams based on characters from the pokemon anime

Harley
Cacturne - Ariados - Banette - Octillery - Wigglytuff + Shuckle as I desparately needed a wall, and he only had five.

Although mainly used in UU battles I did use it against OU teams on occaison with some surprising results.

Ash
Pikachu - Swellow - Muk - Torkoal - Noctowl - Meganium (ok so his Bayleef never evolved, so sue me). Never used it outside of UU.

Jessie/James
Seviper - Arbok - Cacturne - Victreebel - Chimeco - Dustox. Really struggled, even in UU and never won a match, possibly the mixed tier approach adopted by others would be best.

I also had a "girly" themed OU team
Froslass - Shaymin - Milotic - Nidoqueen - Blissey - Cresselia
Surprisingly it proved to be one of my most successful OU teams.

My Mono Bug UU team worked quite well :)

Armaldo / Venomoth / Vespiqueen / Shuckle / Butterfree / Something...

Mono poison raindance!
qwilfish, gengar, crobat, toxicroak, drapion, roserade
:3
Double-theme is hot.

Pretty much all of my teams have been theme teams, my favorite being a status abuse mono-Fight team (Hariyama, Hitmontop, Poliwrath, Breloom, Gallade, and Lucario). Hariyama for tank and para, 'Top for priority and Intimidate, Poli for sleep and subpunch, Breloom for more sleep and more subpunch (but diff resists), Gallade for WoW and Wish, and SD Luke as a sweeper.

Mono-type teams for mock gyms (as has been done here and with my friends) is usually fun.
Psychic is really top tier for this, w/ Metagross, Cresselia, Azelf, Starmie, Gallade, and Bronzong as your core and Alakazam, Medicham and Slowbro (and Deoxys-S) forming your alternates.
Ground, Steel, and Normal are also fairly solid choices, Normal having some of the craziest potential team combinations, imo.

I once made an Ash theme team with Gengar, Gliscor, Blastoise, Muk, Heracross, and Bellyzard. It's too bad the rmt I made about it didn't get any attention at all. =/

Strat for making theme teams:

Think of somthing you like.

Relate pokemon to that thing.

Make a team.

I had a Team Rocket team with Weezing, Arbok, Cacturne, Meowth, Arcanine, and Lickilicky. It did fairly decently, but having to use it in OU with only one OU on the team proved difficult...
