Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann!

joshe

the best
I feel totally obligated to post this because this anime changed my life. CHANGED. MY. LIFE. Gurren Lagann is the perfect anime to watch and enjoy with inspirational quotes galore, epic music, HUGE EXPLOSIONS and a storyline that will make you want to watch the series over and over and over and over again. Oh it'll also make you cry!

Gurren Lagann is a mecha-based anime series that was animated by Gainax and was co-produced by Aniplex and Konami. It ran in Japan during 2007 and in the US and other countries through 2008. It is critically acclaimed throughout the world as one of the best animes to date that offer both mechas, humor, and inspirational goodness. They also made two movies which were pretty much a compilation of the anime series with added scenes.

This thread here should act as discussion for what you liked most / disliked most (*cough* ep4 animation *cough*) and other experiences you felt from watching this anime. really anything that has anything to do with this anime is fine.

spin on! gurren lagann!

what i disliked the most was how long it dragged on sometimes and how they mixed together dumb kid stuff with sad adult stuff

it was still awesome tho for a good portion of the time, but if you know me, youll know i wasnt the biggest fan of ttgl at all...probably because loco hyped it up for me too much

Yoko's clothes were too skimpy...

Agreed; the "Gainax bounce" can be a bit intrusive at times...

Anyway, I just finished watching the series; I think it's a pretty great show as far as shows go. I can't remember which episode it was (presumably 9, maybe one after it), but I got a real emotional response out of it. Somehow, the show finds new and creative ways to captivate your emotions, even as it nears its end. The show feels a little too excessive for its own good sometimes, but it has a really captivating plot that seems to speak to me. It's a story ridden with hope and perseverance in the face of despair.

Really good series. The scale of it all is immensely epic. It starts from the ground and grows into the size of the universe. Figuratively and literally. Everyone should check it out.

probably the best anime around; one of few i'd bother to rewatch now that my animefag phase is well and truly over.

Gurren Lagannnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnn!!!

I think I watched this anime at least 3 times. Gurren Lagann was that good (it helps that it's easy to get into since each episode is fairly self-contained barring a few good episodes.) The characters were good but the main draw to the show was Simon and his relationship with Kamina. The absolute ultimate bro-thership, surpassing even that of Mario & Luigi.

Favorite scene

Second favorite scene

Basically, anytime Libera me from hell ("row, row fight da power) played, I got hyped.

I too can attest to this shows greatness.

Also I was perfectly fine with the Yoko fan service.

Least favorite thing about the show: Pretty much any episode where Rossiu was in control. No me gusta Rossiu.

The music and animation are great, and it's easily one of the best animes of the past few years if you can watch it without taking it too seriously. Although I don't know anyone who could take this seriously. (Also Yoko and Simon are supposed to be the same age lol)

I also really wish other animes would do those season-encompassing movie specials. They're great for when you want to rewatch a show and aren't sitting on ~20 hours of free time. They also have enough new scenes (especially lagann-hen) that they don't get that Dragon Ball Z Kai effect where you feel like you're missing out on too much.

Just asked my anime obsessed friend about it. he says its good. I trust him enough to watch it.

what i disliked the most was how long it dragged on
Funny, part of what I love about this show is that it *doesn't* drag on. But maybe that's because I'm comparing to multiple-season American shows and Naruto/Bleach/DBZ...

I have watched through this show three times and it's rare for me to watch through a show or play through a video game more than twice so that's saying something. People don't like the second arc as much, but it's very much a legitimate and important part of the story (also how do you not like what Kittan does) and the anime wouldn't make as much sense without it. That said, I feel the anime really toes the line between excellent execution of "over the top" and going, well, overboard on it, and the movies cross that line. I find that it's really easy for Japanese shows and video games to cross that line to feel more like a cheesy game show than a legitimate work of art.

There's so much stuff that can be named about how awesome the show is. People have pointed some of them out and I'm sure more will come. One scene that sticks out to me that hasn't been mentioned is the Anti-Spiral dream trap (it has a name but I forgot it...). It really brings home Simon's coming of age in a tangible way by the implicit comparisons to Kamina. Also the hopeless Kamina was D:

Great series. I have no more words for this because it is insanely hard to describe the sheer awesomeness and manliness.

If anybody liked Gurren Laggan, they should check out Getter Robo Armageddon. It's pretty much the insanity of Gurren Lagann without that Rossiu arc.

Getter Robo Armageddon in my experience has been insanely hard to find. Any tips?

Anyway on the subject of badass robot anime that was popular in Japan for decades before people Gurren Laggan was popular in the west, people should also check out Giant Robo; The Day the Earth Stood Still. It's not just one of the highest production value OVAs ever, it revolutionized the giant robot genre by taking inspiration from Hong Kong action flicks and Chinese epics (like the Romance of the Three Kingdoms). Kamina's badassery is owed to this OVA.

Most TTGL fans are extremely vocal, so that is why it gets hyped up as much as it does, even 5 years after it aired. Personally it is one of my all time favorites, and I actually liked the things kd24 didn't. I appreciated it especially because it felt a lot like a labor of love when most anime today is derivative. Pushing it as the best thing ever to everyone you know though will only disappoint them. Again, while I found it to be really enjoyable, that doesn't mean it will be everyone's cup of tea.

Oh yeah, don't watch the dub. The original VA's for Kamina and Viral in particular did an incredible job with their characters.

the moon is 10e6
the galaxy is 10e22 or something

That's like you fighting an enemy the size of a single atom. Yeah isn't that dumb?

No bitch, that shit is fucking retarded
I refuse to believe that asians made this show
yes i'm furious
