Team Fortress 2 - The Official Discussion Thread

I just can't connect to any servers. Oh well, just need to wait a while.
That video was good though, can't wait to do some heavy achievements

i've already got two thanks to a brilliant glitch :D
apparently everyone gets two out of a handful of achieves as a glitch without having to play...everyone seems to be getting konspicuous consumption, and people are reporting getting purge, five second plan and maybe more, I forget.
I got konspicuous consumption and five second plan :)

edit: seconds after posting I lost them B(

WHYYYY VALVE, WHY DID YOU KILL CIVILIAN HEAVY :(

Anyways, KGB is credit to team, awesome item. The way I play heavy, sandvich is killing my primary ranged weapon and the new minigun is pretty crappy on the offense but helps out on defense. Sandvich is pretty good for people who play heavy with the minigun though.

Update: Played for an hour, got 7 achievements. A lot of the heavy achievements are all time so I don't think I will get much further for awhile, though I didn't get a few easy ones that I should have gotten. Heavy assist one comes really fast considering everyone is playing either a heavy or medic. If you didn't get the ubersaw for any reason before now is an excellent time to do it with all of the heavies running around, I also got the total healed in one life medic achievements in that hour.

So I got ~23 achievements and so all the unlocks, I have to say KGB are fucking awesome, the sanvich is pretty badass for the new arena considering everyone is dying you just need to find the right hiding spot, and natascha is ok didn't notice much of a change :S

Almost have they first milestone :(
But it's hard having fun with the heavy, who are really fun, when everyone and their mothers are being ones. Though doing goldrush when everyone is a heavy and using only their fists is awesome. Oh, until a sniper with auto headshot jamps in to ruin your fun.

The sandvich looks so cool from what I've seen. Oh, and the K.G.B.
aaaa

I'm having trouble enjoying the new PL map with so many heavies. Maybe when it dies down I'll have more fun.

Arena is pretty good.

Oops, meant Sandvich. Thought it was the K.G.B you got first :p. I've nearly got Natascha, need 4 more achievements, and I've unlocked most of the harder ones already, so it shouldn't be too hard.

Anyone else think that the video should have been titled "Meat the Sandvich" instead?

Well, I've gotten a chance to play all of the new maps, and I've got to say that arena mode is a lot more enjoyable than I expected it to be. I've found that very few rounds are won by control point capture; usually by the end of one round the winner is obvious and if the round is won by CP capture, it's simply because the remaining survivors from the opposing team are trying to stall the round.

However, arena playability tends to vary heavily by map. Ravine and Lumberyard are both great (as well they should be; they were designed for the gametype). Badlands also works pretty well. However, the arena versions of Well and Granary seem pretty weak to me. To me, it just feels like they had a gametype that they wanted maps for, and said "Hey guys we can save time by just modifying some of our existing maps for the new gametype." It didn't work when they did it with ctf_well, and it didn't really work here either. I'd rather that they release the update with a small number of maps than release a bunch of maps that are just mediocre.

But as for general gameflow, I like arena for a lot of reasons. I like the fact that snipers are now actually helpful team members. I like the fact that the spy is actually useful. I like the fact that the flare gun, critzcrieg, and sandvich are actually useful as weapons. The one thing that I don't like is that critical hits exist. Crit rockets can one-shot anything but a Heavy, which isn't really a big deal in regular play since they're infrequent and you usually spawn shortly after. However, in arena mode, getting insta-gibbed by an attack that should have knocked off half your HP is really, really frustrating. I've tried searching for arena servers that have crits turned off without any luck.

As for the new payload map, I've found that it's very easy for the attacking team to reach the first three checkpoints, but virtually impossible to make it past the last point. (Red can snipe easily on the last point, but blu doesn't have any really good options for sniping. Also, the sentry alcove overlooking the last point makes it practically impossible to take out a well-placed sentry with anything other than pipe bombs, grenades, or rockets.) The plethora of heavies has made playing defense on this map a lot of fun for two reasons: one, when the attacking team is moving the cart, there are a lot of large, slow-moving backs all facing in the same direction, making it easy for a knife to make short work of the push. Second, six mobile sentries covering the cart is actually a pretty defensively-sound strategy. It's like covering the cart with sentries, except that when an uber push comes in, you have a stream of mobile sentries rushing from the spawn to intercept the cart at the next choke point.

Heh, finished my unlocks today in a few hours of playtime, ended up using an achievementbox server for the last two I needed. KGB is an extremely good item but it costs you the heavy fingergun taunt. The fingergun has pretty damned long range too (I'm talking like a lot longer than even the flamethrower, try it), it can actually be useful if you know how to use it. Sandvich is more useful than I'd thought it would be, also delicious. Natascha is ok, but the normal gun is still generally the more useful of the two.

I also took the time to backtrack and get the medic unlocks that I never bothered with while all of these heavies are around. Medic with ubersaw is like playing an entirely different class from standard bonesaw imo, much more effective.

got the KGB in my first play since the update, I was pleased to note that although some of the achievements are very hard (party loyalty, krazy ivan, kollectivization, etc) there are about enough easy ones to get all 3 weapons. I farmed most of mine, and at least 10 of them could be gotten in like 5 minutes of farming, which gets you the sandvich, though the last few I needed for the KGB had me in the chat going "can someone go medic? I'll help you after..." for about half an hour or so :P
I dunno if I'm going to bother farmind the rest, i'll probably just get em as they come, thoguh I don't play heavy too often so :/
ps "meat: the sandwich" was my idea Esc can vouch for me B(

Congratulations stoo.

I'm off to my grandmother's tomorrow, and I'll be playing the game of course. I need the four achievements to get Natascha, which is awesome; i've got a few easy ones left;

Spyalectical Materialism
Communist Mani-Fisto
Rationing
Own the Means of Production

They should be pretty easy to get, my friend said he'd help me get those. I'm also one achievement away from unlocking the Axtinguisher...

Kiku, I think I know what you mean now though.
Medic absolutely destroyed arena, especially mixed with the heavies. It's like a wall of never-dying heavies. Also, scouts, spies, snipers cant stop medics because of the blutslager 1v1 on the cap point. Most teams on the servers I played had 2-3 and it was pretty rough.

Scouts work pretty well on arena as long as you can avoid heavies, mostly. I play much more conservative on arena maps since there are more places to go after shooting someone quickly. I try to play very team-friendly, starting the maps by spamming some pistol shots while moving, then getting close and hurting a member of their team and moving away quickly. On ravine, I was able to mess up a few heavies without a team medic, and even got a kill, looping in and out of obstacles, and getting most damage by the end of it. I think scouts work really well in the fast-paced arena game, where they can move around a map fast and get behind a team and start to get some kills in the back. They can take out a medic from behind really well, that I would argue only a good spy or sniper can do it better. I got some rewarding kills from finding a heavy-medic pair and chasing them.

The new PL map looks fun but man, is it hard.

I finally have this shit installed and ready to go. No idea how to play though, seeing as how there's no single player mode.

medics are indeed great in arena, and the kritzkreig is pretty destrouctive now that it charges 25% faster than the medigun rather than 10% before the buff
Seriously, a kubered soldier can wreck in arena...
edit: what do you guys think about sitting out? Personally i think it fucking sucks, if I'm playing tf2, I wanna play tf2, not watch others play, geez :/

Thunderpup; are you Collycauseschaosness on Steam? I have you added..

Surgo; its pretty simple. The 'arrow keys' are w, a, s and d. You shoot with the left click, and thats pretty much all you need to begin with.

Ctrl is to crouch as well, and g is for taunting. y is for talking, u is for team talk.

Simple, yet effective.

I think surgo was talking about the more intricate game stuff like how the spy works, or the engie etc, not basic controls

just unlocked two of the heavies weapons, and after one more achievement ill have the boxing gloves =)

natascha seems to suck but the sandvich i can see being standard, its pretty helpful
