Switching Milotic MS Around

Well, I went with this Milotic originally.

Milotic @ Leftovers
Bold
252 HP/130 Def/126 Sp Def
~Surf
~Ice Beam
~Rest
~Sleep Talk

But I don't like it. Yeah, it doesn't die, but it doesn't really do a whole lot for me in the way of getting things accomplished. Then there's the chance of something coming in and setting up on me to sweep my whole team, and I really don't like it. Thing is, this one has some great IVs and I had a hell of a time getting it to evolve, so I want to use it. That puts Mirror Coat and Hypnosis out of the window (and Hypnosis was already gone because I run a Breloom.)

Anyway, I went through its movepool and I came up with

Milotic @ Leftovers
Bold
252 HP/130 Def/126 Sp Def
~Surf
~Ice Beam
~Aqua Ring
~Toxic

I can use Aqua Ring + Leftovers to get 1/8th health back every turn, which is pretty huge considering this Milotic's HP. Also, the Defenses will still keep it from getting too hurt. The main two moves here are Aqua Ring and Toxic, though. What will probably end up happening is I'll use Aqua Ring, and they'll either switch to a counter or do something else, but definitely not be able to kill me on one turn (unless they have an electric move, which I will address in a minute.) I'll use Toxic next turn and either hit the thing they have out or the counter they switch in. If it's the thing they have out, yay, I'll go with Surf/Ice Beam depending on what it is as Toxic drains them and I keep getting health back from Lefties/Aqua Ring. If they switch in a counter, it'll still get hit with Toxic. The best part about this is I have an Electivire, so most counters they switch in will use Electric moves. I'll switch and it'll hit him, giving him the Motor Drive boost and letting him go wild.

I don't know, I like this set a lot more. Any comments or advice? I know you guys are all waiting for Competitor and won't really care about the whole not going back to breed for Hypnosis and all that, but if you could see it from my POV, that would be great. Thanks to all who help.

Also

vvvv I love that kid vvvvv

^He said he can't get hypnosis.

OP-You can always put toxic over ice beam on the sleep talker. I also think that recover would be better than aqua ring if you're not planning out staying out for forever (in which case you would want to stay with the sleep talker)

Seriously just use Recover not Aqua ring. an extra 1/16 is pretty rubbish considering you could get 1/2 whenever you felt like it. You can't keep switching into Garchomp/Mence when your only means of recovery (say sandstorm is out) heals 1/16 per turn...

I truely, truely feel your pain. I spent 30+ hours getting some average IV'd milotic with MC...after I had a level 70 shit wrecker on Ruby. Took forever to get a female feebas out of the male level 70 Milo I had (with ditto)...then corsola, what a pain. Had to breed for a male cause I couldn't find one, then had to level up to like...45? Something like that? Wow. So yes, I feel your pain.

On the other hand, that, my longest breeding endeavor (including berry farming, not fun), was worth it. I love smiting all those idiots who bring in some noob jolteon, only to get hammered by MC. It's awesome.

So it's either

Surf
Ice Beam
Recover
Toxic

or

Surf
Rest
Sleep Talk
Toxic

I really like the first one more. Rest/Sleep Talk NEVER seems to do what I want it to do.

The short answer? If it has good IVs and is female, breed with a mighty Poliwhirl for a nice baby to be born with Hypnosis. The nice part if that you won't have to lose your Rest/Sleep Talk, which can't be Heart Scaled back. You'll have 2 milotics and can just switch them at your will when making a team.

Since that ^ was not a short answer, here's it: I say Recover/Protect/Toxic and either Surf or Ice Beam (depends on your team's needs). Toxic + Leftovers pratically beg for Protect, giving you a free turn of poison damage and leftovers recovery. Alternating between Protect and Recover also makes you almost unkillable.

Also, if you decide to keep your Sleep Talker, just add some Satk to it. I'm assuming it has good IVs where it matters, here, otherwise simply breed again. Rest + lefties covers your health, you don't need all the 508 EVs in defense. I say enough EVs on Hp to reach a number that is divisible by 16, and the rest on Defense/Satk/Sdef in a decreasing ammount (128/72/56 works for me most of the time and leaves you with 252 for Hp to work for the 384 magical number. Then put all unused EVs into Def or Satk).

Hey, and I just learned I can't make short answers =p

Def use recover.

Milo depends soley on what you need it for. The bulky water is kind of outdated. I tried an attacking Milotic for my rain dance team because people forget about the base 100 SA along with stellar defenses.

I used Hydro Pump_Rain Dance_Ice Beam/Dragon Pulse_Recover

Let me explain before people bash this!

My particular Milotic was modest, could NOT get hypnosis, and had a stat layout of 360/230/300/290 for HP/Def/SA/SD. I wanted to change the pace and experiment. Simple strategy, Rain Dance and pummel things with double STAB Hydro Pump and 300 SA, which puts many things in OHKO range where surf will not. This is NOT a Salamence/Garchomp counter, but provided one of your guys dies you can use Ice Beam 1 on 1 as it will always OHKO both of them. Dragon Pulse is for if you have a sure counter, and just don't want to be in a stallwar with waters and Hydro-Pump's piss-poor PP. Basically, this Milotic should catch the opponent of guard, because he is just setup fodder for a lot of pokemon.

Well this is the only other idea I can think of. Hypnosis is pretty much a must for a sturdy or passive Milotic.

Well, thanks for all the great help.

I've pretty much decided on

Surf
Toxic
Recover
Protect

Or should I really try and sneak Ice Beam on there somewhere?

Like I said, it's your team's call. How many of the other 5 pokémon know Surf/Ice Beam? If you have a way to deal with dragons, Surf. If Rhyperior and Tyranitar are already covered, Ice Beam. There's no right option here, but if you already have enough Surfers and Beamers I say go for the Stab on Surf. Hydro Pump is also an option if you don't mind it missing every once in a while (and the low PP). I don't recommen it though, not on this Milo.

I don't see why you don't have IB on there. You're pretty much asking mence to come in and rape you while you try to toxistall.

Yeah and Infernape, Tyranitar, and to a lesser extent Rhyperior/Weavile/Heracross too, if you don't have Surf. Like I said, depends on his team's needs. Mence comes, becomes poisoned on the switch, you Protect once, and switch yourself. You think that's bad?

Why Protect? Stick in Ice Beam instead of it. I can't see many situations in which you'd want to Protect with Milotic. "Protect + Toxic" isn't that great a strategy.

Toxic + protect can actually work on Milotic. Toxic the Heracross switch, Protect on it, and switch to an appropriate counter. It will lose a lot of health this way. Just make sure you be careful trying to handle it next time it comes in on a different pokemon

Milotic has the right defenses, the right type, has Recover, and lacks in the attack department if you make it a Bulky Water. Toxic is perfect for Milotic, and Protect for scouting and lefties/toxic abuse is pretty good indeed. It's like Jibaku said, just play accordingly, and you should do a lot of harm with it.

I went with this in emerald:

Milotic@Leftovers
Bold Nature
EVs: 80 HP, 252 Def, 40 SAtk, 136 SDef
-Surf
-Ice Beam
-Recover
-Mirror Coat

Since all weaknesses of milotic were special attack I went with that but I went Rest-talk in pearl. I prefer rest-talk though.

Mirror coat does have its up-side:

Most powerful physical attack from electric is thunder fang lol.

But then the downside is that there are more Leaf blade and Power whip going around

i can AR Mirror Coat onto it if you'd like?? PM me ^_^

im not into the aqua ring either.....unless you dont want to recover every couple of turns

Toxic + protect can actually work on Milotic. Toxic the Heracross switch, Protect on it, and switch to an appropriate counter. It will lose a lot of health this way. Just make sure you be careful trying to handle it next time it comes in on a different pokemon

Plus, if the Heracross is CB'd or CS'd (like so many are nowadays), you get to see what attack it locks itself into, which is a huge plus when trying to figure out which pokemon to switch in.

At the slight risk of eating a more powerful CB Megahorn or Close Combat (or eating a CH and dying), you can always just use Recover to get back the lost HP you take from its attack instead of wasting an extra move slot with Protect. Protect is better (and has other uses) so it's not outclassed here, but lacking Ice Beam really does hurt and you really have to consider if losing that move slot is worthwhile.

Mirror Coat + Recover is cool and you can ask to the guy with AR to teach it to your Milo, as long as he/she is serious and won't steal your Poke

I used to like the Sleep Talk Milo but it isn't that threatening and calls your foe for free setup :S

Surf/Ice Beam/Hypnosis/Recover is what I think is better now, you can catch their Milo counter with Hypnosis on the switch or after a 1 turn, I can't think of a Poke that could 1KO Milotic without stat-ups but Choice Specs/Choice Band Grass/Electric Pokemons so if you are a risky person like me ...!

dpffb350.png
Milotic @ Leftovers
Trait: Marvel Scale
EVs: 148 HP / 240 Def / 120 SAtk
Bold Nature (+Def, -Atk)
- Surf
- Ice Beam
- Hypnosis
- Recover

I focus on Defense on Milo because I still like the Bulky Water idea =P, the HP allows you for 23 HP Lefties Recovery per turn and the SpA is enough to KO Garchomp and 2KO Tyranitar (4 HP/0 SpD) (well has chances of being 3KOed but you have to use Hypnosis first!! [Stupid Sandstorm SpD boost]) and KOing Rhyperior (252 HP/0 SpD) (With the Sandstorm boost is a 2KO, no doubt on that..)

You would need 31 IVs in HP, Def and SpA, if you go with this set.

And don't rely into Marvel Scale that much, but always try to catch T.Waves with Milo!!

PD: Talk with the guy with AR in order to teach your Milo Hypnosis if you trust on him/her.

See, I don't want Hypnosis because Breloom and Milotic are two of my favorite pokemon to use from the Advance gen so I'm working them into my DS gen team. What always used to end up happening was I'd spore someone with Breloom and stuff would happen and I'd always end up with Milotic out with a wasted move slot because of sleep clause. So I don't want Hypnosis. This leaves me with

Surf
Recover
^ that much is definite ^ and the general consensus down here is
Ice Beam/Toxic
Mirror Coat/Protect

Unfortunately because I like this Milotic and I want to use it to draw electric attacks for Electivire anyway (and also don't feel like rebreeding) I'm throwing Mirror Coat out. So I've got

Surf
Recover
Ice Beam/Toxic
Toxic/Protect

I'm not going Ice Beam and Protect, obviously, so it's definitely

Surf
Recover
Toxic
Ice Beam or Protect.

I've seen convincing arguments for both Ice Beam and Protect, and it seems like Ice Beam is more for general coverage and would be more useful in more situations, while Protect is more situational but would help me much more in those situations, particularly against Choice users. I don't know how many more Ice users I'm going to have, so I'll stick with Ice Beam for now. I'll let you guys know what happened when I put up my RMT, (don't worry, it won't be all OU). Thanks for all the help, and if you have any closing comments especially about how Protect is better than Ice Beam here, let me know; I'd really appreciate it.

EDIT: Also, as far as ARing moves onto my pokemon goes, I'll have the Netbattle equivalent for D/P to do stuff like that with. The whole point of playing the actual cartridges is to have to do stuff like breed moves onto the pokemon, so thanks for the offer, but no thanks.:) ;)
