Rotom-Wash @ Leftovers
Ability: Levitate
Tera Type: Ghost
EVs: 248 HP / 244 Def / 16 Spe
Bold Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Substitute
- Nasty Plot
- Hydro Pump
- Discharge / Thunderbolt
Status: Check
As long as Rotom-Wash can come in without getting Salt Cured, it can set up a Substitute and a Nasty Plot or two before drenching it with Hydro Pump. Even at +2 Garg can't break Washtom's substitute with Salt Cure. Tera Ghost lets it deny Body Press variants as well as EKiller Dragonite. If it Tera Waters, then it'll get nailed by Discharge or Thunderbolt. It's recommended to send in a teammate that would otherwise be setup bait for Garg (such as defensive Tusk), force a Curse or Recover, set up with Substitute and Nasty Plot, then nail it with one of your STABs. The Speed investment lets it outrun uninvested Great Tusk and other defensive Washtoms, but investing more into Defense or Special Attack is an option.

+2 0 Atk Garganacl Salt Cure vs. 248 HP / 244+ Def Rotom-Wash: 60-72 (19.8 - 23.7%) -- possible 6HKO after Leftovers recovery
+2 0 SpA Rotom-Wash Hydro Pump vs. 248 HP / 252+ SpD Garganacl: 380-450 (94.2 - 111.6%) -- 68.8% chance to OHKO
+2 0 SpA Rotom-Wash Discharge vs. 248 HP / 252+ SpD Tera Water Garganacl: 278-330 (68.9 - 81.8%) -- guaranteed 2HKO after Leftovers recovery
+2 0 SpA Rotom-Wash Thunderbolt vs. 248 HP / 252+ SpD Tera Water Garganacl: 312-368 (77.4 - 91.3%) -- guaranteed 2HKO after Leftovers recovery

What better counter to Garganacl than Garganacl? By swapping the tera type to ghost, which admittedly isn't optimal to waste your tera type for one exact pokemon, it is able to take care of Garganacl completely. Sure curse cuts your hp, sure salt cure chip will "kill" you eventually, but curse doing 25% of the opponent's health a turn + salt cure doing 1/8th health shuts down Gargancl outside of hard swapping or spamming recover (Which is good :)).

Garganacl @ Leftovers
Ability: Purifying Salt
Tera Type: Ghost
EVs: 248 HP / 8 Def / 252 SpD
Careful Nature
- Curse
- Salt Cure
- Recover
- Avalanche

Another counter is Brambleghast. Now, personally, I think it's a pretty stupid-looking pokemon and outside of this very niche role I don't think it can do anything else in ou besides this.

Brambleghast @ Covert Cloak
Ability: Wind Rider
Tera Type: Grass
EVs: 252 HP / 4 Def / 252 SpA
Modest Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Strength Sap
- Curse
- Leaf Storm
- Disable

The entire setup is Curse>Strength Sap>Leaf Storm. Leaf Storming TWICE, with curse, (should) secure a kill with ease.
You could also run specs lol
252+ SpA Choice Specs Brambleghast Leaf Storm vs. 248 HP / 252+ SpD Garganacl: 390-462 (96.7 - 114.6%) -- 81.3% chance to OHKO

That's basically it to be honest this took about 5 minutes of thinking while I was cleaning my room lol.

Please only make 1 submission. Multiple submissions only limits other participant's choices. I will look into mentioning this in the rules but for now please keep it at 1.

:sv/Brambleghast:
Brambleghast @ Covert Cloak
Ability: Infiltrator
Tera Type: Grass
EVs: 252 HP / 20 SpA / 236 Spe
Timid Nature
- Leech Seed
- Strength Sap
- Grass Knot / Giga Drain
- Rapid Spin

Nifty little guy that denies Garg through passive chip for a taste of its own medicine. EV spread guarantee's you outspeed modest Shocks and Jolly Tusk, rest is dumped into HP and then spAtk.

Leech seed + Strength sap lets you heal off EQ damage while Cloak ignores salt cure, as well as prevents Garg from setting up on you. Grass knot is a 3HKO (before Tera); you could opt for Giga Drain but its not really necessary except for super edge cases vs mons outside of Garg.

0 Atk Garganacl Earthquake vs. 252 HP / 0 Def Brambleghast: 48-57 (15.2 - 18.1%) -- possible 6HKO
0 Atk Tera Fairy Garganacl Salt Cure vs. 252 HP / 0 Def Brambleghast: 58-70 (18.4 - 22.2%) -- possible 5HKO
20 SpA Brambleghast Grass Knot (120 BP) vs. 248 HP / 252+ SpD Garganacl: 170-204 (42.1 - 50.6%) -- guaranteed 3HKO after Leftovers recovery
20 SpA Brambleghast Grass Knot (120 BP) vs. 248 HP / 252+ SpD Tera Fairy Garganacl: 85-102 (21 - 25.3%) -- possible 5HKO after Leftovers recovery

Technically this is only a check because if you let Garg set up past +4 then you get 2hko'd by Salt Cure on the switch in. But if you let a Curse Garganacl get up to +4 (4 full turns) while you have a dedicated check on your team, its not really the mon's fault at that point, is it.

It does fully counter the Iron Defense + Body Press set though.

Hydreigon @ Life Orb
Ability: Levitate
Tera Type: Poison
EVs: 252 SpA / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
- Nasty Plot
- Dark Pulse
- Draco Meteor
- Earth Power

While combined Life Orb and Salt Cure chip is annoying, a lack of Body Press means that Hydreigon can easily switch in on Garganacl's other moves and begin setting up. After one round of setup, Garganacl is OHKOed by Draco Meteor before and after it uses Tera, and before doing so it has to watch out for Earth Power as well.

It's worth noting that Salt Cure does 2HKO on its own if Garganacl is at +5 or higher, but if it gets to that point, it's probably already too late anyway.

:hydreigon:
252 SpA Life Orb Hydreigon Dark Pulse vs. 248 HP / 252+ SpD Garganacl: 129-152 (32 - 37.7%) -- 0.1% chance to 3HKO after Leftovers recovery
+2 252 SpA Life Orb Hydreigon Dark Pulse vs. 248 HP / 252+ SpD Garganacl: 255-302 (63.2 - 74.9%) -- guaranteed 2HKO after Leftovers recovery

+2 252 SpA Life Orb Hydreigon Earth Power vs. 248 HP / 252+ SpD Garganacl: 382-452 (94.7 - 112.1%) -- 68.8% chance to OHKO

Toedscruel @ Leftovers
Ability: Mycelium Might
EVs: 252 HP/64 Def/192 SpA
Modest Nature
Tera-Type: Grass
- Giga Drain
- Leech Seed
- Toxic
- Substitute

Should be pretty obvious, really. Mycelium Might bypasses Purifying Salt's ability to block status conditions, allowing Toedscruel to Toxic Garganacl and stop it from dragging the fight out. Leech Seed & Lefties offset Salt Cure chip, and Giga Drain is the attack of choice for even more recovery. Finally, we have Sub to get either the Leech Seed or the Toxic off relatively safely.

With Tera-Grass and some EV investment, Toed recovers enough off from Giga Drain against Garg to always make a brand new Sub, and it comes with a bonus chance to 2HKO that Leech Seed can secure.

192+ SpA Tera Grass Toedscruel Giga Drain vs. 248 HP / 252+ SpD Garganacl: 192-228 (47.6 - 56.5%) -- 31.3% chance to 2HKO after Leftovers recovery/guaranteed 2HKO after Leftovers recovery and Leech Seed damage

Between the resistances and the defense EVs, Garg can't break Toed's Sub at +1 with either move, although it'll slightly be in its favor to break with Salt Cure if you Tera'd early

+1 0 Atk Garganacl Salt Cure vs. 252 HP / 64 Def Toedscruel: 42-50 (11.5 - 13.7%) -- 59.4% chance to 2HKO Sub
+1 0 Atk Garganacl Earthquake vs. 252 HP / 64 Def Toedscruel: 70-82 (19.2 - 22.5%) -- guaranteed 2HKO on Sub
+1 0 Atk Garganacl Salt Cure vs. 252 HP / 64 Def Tera Grass Toedscruel: 84-100 (23 - 27.4%) -- 56.3% chance to OHKO Sub

:hydreigon: + :amoonguss:
I'd vote Toedscruel for Counter, but the fact that you NEED to take a Salt Cure JUST to get the Substitute off makes it not worth it.

Hi all, as mentioned, I will be taking over the project for the foreseeable future; a big thank you to SetsuSetsuna for hosting it in the interim.

Congratulations to Lectrys (:Meowscarada:) and SOM/05 (:Amoonguss:) for winning this round of VOTW; your sets will be added to the hall of fame!

Our next victim for week 8 will be... Iron Valiant.

With its fantastic speed tier, unique defensive typing, and monstrous offensive potential, Iron Valiant rests comfortably within top 10 for usage. Be it as a mixed attacker, a calm mind sweeper, a scarfer, or even banded, this mon often finds a niche for itself in many teams.

How will YOU defeat this knight in shining armor? Submissions end Thursday at 23:59 EST!

PS: Please remember to clarify if you are submitting a set as a check or as a true counter - a winner will be selected for each!

Sylveon hard walls any single special Iron Valiant set under the sun

4 SpA Pixilate Sylveon Hyper Voice vs. 4 HP / 0 SpD Iron Valiant: 384-452 (132.4 - 155.8%) -- guaranteed OHKO
You basically disintegrate her even if valiant is behind a sub thanks to Hyper Voice's properties

252 SpA Iron Valiant Moonblast vs. 252 HP / 252+ SpD Sylveon: 88-105 (22.3 - 26.6%) -- possible 5HKO after Leftovers recovery
252 SpA Iron Valiant Thunderbolt vs. 252 HP / 252+ SpD Sylveon: 56-67 (14.2 - 17%) -- possible 9HKO after Leftovers recovery

252 SpA Iron Valiant Shadow Ball vs. 252 HP / 252+ SpD Sylveon: 50-59 (12.6 - 14.9%) -- possibly the worst move ever

It basically deals nothing, worse case scenario you get a Spedef Drop on the switch, but even with a max roll and that
252 SpA Iron Valiant Moonblast vs. -1 252 HP / 252+ SpD Sylveon: 133-157 (33.7 - 39.8%) -- guaranteed 3HKO after Leftovers recovery

252 SpA Iron Valiant Shadow Ball vs. -1 252 HP / 252+ SpD Sylveon: 74-88 (18.7 - 22.3%) -- possible 5HKO after Leftovers recovery

Not even a Crit with the spedef drop kills, and that's like even worse case scenario

Tera Blast Fire is a non factor in this equation, but you can also try your luck against gholdengo (its my personal set)

Why run a non-Scarf offensive Gholdengo when you can run a future-proofed defensive Gholdengo? Volc's great typing which resists both valiant's STABs while still got recovery&setup. With a boots equipped, facing non-trick Valiant, it can just switch in&out andsetup freely (if there's no crits)
IMG_20230225_232848.jpg

it just cant 3hko that freely
and Since volc's got +2 speed, it just drains the HP back or just Morning sun to recover.
(Aaaand it couldnt be killed even running pure physical knock off.Except specs Tera Psyshock is absurdabsolutely my favorite)
