SV OU Sun Offense

OK So I havent done competitive battling for a while but I thought I would get back into it after the release of Scarlet and Violet.

So I thought of making Sun due to the new Paradox ability Protosynthesis and it seems really solid but I would like some opinions of how to improve. The 2 that stood out to me were Great Tusk and Roaring Moon so I thought I'd try to build around these 2. I know I'm a little late to the party cuz I'm fairly sure everyone has come up with the same idea as me.

great tusk.gif

Great Tusk @ Assault Vest
Ability: Protosynthesis
Tera Type: Fighting
EVs: 8 Atk / 20 Def / 248 SpD / 232 Spe
- Close Combat
- Earthquake
- Rapid Spin
- Knock Off

Great Tusk is the teams Rapid Spinner and part of the teams defensive integrity. Assault vest gives Great Tusk a much needed boost to its Special Defense and allows the team to be more aggressive plus being a decent check to Gholdengo, which is from what I've researched is the best spinblocker in the format right now. Protosynthesis giving a defense boost isn't the worst thing in the world honestly. I left Tera Fighting mostly cuz I dont really plan on Terastallizing this ever.

Offensive:
8 Atk Great Tusk Knock Off (97.5 BP) vs. 0 HP / 0 Def Gholdengo: 186-220 (59 - 69.8%) -- guaranteed 2HKO
8 Atk Great Tusk Earthquake vs. 0 HP / 0 Def Gholdengo: 288-338 (91.4 - 107.3%) -- 43.8% chance to OHKO

Defensive:
252 SpA Gholdengo Focus Blast vs. 0 HP / 248+ SpD Assault Vest Great Tusk: 94-111 (25.3 - 29.9%) -- guaranteed 4HKO
252 SpA Gholdengo Shadow Ball vs. 0 HP / 248+ SpD Assault Vest Great Tusk: 94-112 (25.3 - 30.1%) -- guaranteed 4HKO
252 SpA Gholdengo Make It Rain vs. 0 HP / 248+ SpD Assault Vest Great Tusk: 141-166 (38 - 44.7%) -- guaranteed 3HKO
(Everything turns into a 2HKO with Nasty Plot)

roaring moon.gif

Roaring Moon @ Choice Band
Ability: Protosynthesis
Tera Type: Flying
EVs: 220 Atk / 36 Def / 252 Spe
Jolly Nature
- Crunch
- Earthquake
- Iron Head
- U-turn

Roaring Moon is a banded attacker for this team. Honestly a Dragon STAB move isnt too necessary cuz of the coverage this thing has. U-Turn is to pivot into other teammates along with being just a relatively safe move overall. Crunch is for obvious STAB. Earthquake is just a good move all around. Iron Head is for any Fairy type that switches in. EV's are spec'd to guarantee a Speed boost with Protosynthesis, essentially giving this thing a Scarf in Sun. Tera Flying seemed like a good Tera type for it.

1589769656126.gif

Torkoal @ Heat Rock
Ability: Drought
EVs: 248 HP / 252 Def / 8 SpA
Bold Nature
- Body Press
- Lava Plume
- Stealth Rock
- Rapid Spin

Torkoal is obviously mandatory with those aforementioned 2 Pokémon above. Body Press works well with its high defense. Stealth Rock is of course good. Lava Plume is just for all around good damage plus the burn chance is always kind of nice. Rapid Spin may seem redundant cuz I have a spinner, helps take some of the spin pressure off of Great Tusk.

chi-yu.gif

Chi-Yu @ Choice Specs
Ability: Beads of Ruin
Tera Type: Fire
EVs: 252 SpA / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Flamethrower
- Overheat
- Dark Pulse
- Psychic

Chi-Yu is insane, theres no other way to phrase it. Beads of Ruin help this goldfish hit harder due to the Special Defense drop and the boost to STAB fire type moves under Sun hit so much. Unfortunately this thing doesnt have a wide movepool but these were what I thought were the best 4 moves for it. Tera Type Fire was picked just so Fire STAB can hit harder.

252 SpA Choice Specs Chi-Yu Overheat vs. 252 HP / 224+ SpD Clodsire in Sun: 363-427 (78.2 - 92%) -- guaranteed 2HKO after Leftovers recovery
252 SpA Choice Specs Chi-Yu Overheat vs. 252 HP / 0 SpD Hatterene: 319-376 (100.3 - 118.2%) -- guaranteed OHKO
252 SpA Choice Specs Chi-Yu Flamethrower vs. 252 HP / 0 SpD Hatterene in Sun: 331-391 (104 - 122.9%) -- guaranteed OHKO
252 SpA Choice Specs Chi-Yu Dark Pulse vs. 252 HP / 0 SpD Dondozo: 286-337 (56.7 - 66.8%) -- guaranteed 2HKO after Leftovers recovery

dragapult.gif.m.gif

Dragapult @ Choice Specs
Ability: Infiltrator
EVs: 4 Def / 252 SpA / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
- Draco Meteor
- Shadow Ball
- Thunderbolt
- U-turn

Dragapult is another specs attacker that is just all around a good Pokemon. Thunderbolt is for water or flying types since the other members of the team dont really have good answers to those 2 types. U-turn is for pivoting, Draco Meteor and Shadow Ball are just good STABs.

hatterene.gif

Hatterene @ Leftovers
Ability: Magic Bounce
Tera Type: Water
EVs: 252 HP / 204 Def / 52 Spe
Bold Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Calm Mind
- Draining Kiss
- Psyshock
- Mystical Fire

Calm Mind Hatterene is another part of the defensive backbone of this team. Magic Bounce is always good repelling entry hazards or status. Tera Water was picked to give Hatterene another potential layer of defense to its role.

Hi, I am also a fan of the Sunny team, so I have some advice for you, but these advice may not be the optimal way for you, only to inspire you to improve your team.

First, sun offense has a common weakness, Chi-Yu is one of the popular pokemon in this environment, when the sunrise, the opponent's Chi-Yu will be a big threat to your team as well, and your pokemons will be taken down by one or two hits when you switch in pokemon. Although my own team still didn't fix this problem, I notice one pokemon can deal with it.

Dachsbun, which has fairy-stype and Well-Baked Body can easily stop the crazy fire move and dark move from Chi-Yu.

Second, in the Gen9 OU environment, a lot of balance team has a sweeper can be a threat to your team, such as sword dance Chien-Pao, dragon dance Dragonite and Roaring Moon, Quaquaval. When they have a chance to boost their attack, then the game will be easy to flip over. Here is a pokemon I suggest down below.

Dondozo, easy to help deal with this problem, and it is also a good pokemon for you to counter water-type pokemon.

Hope these suggestions can help you improve the team. Enjoy the game.

Thank you for your suggestions tim031024 , glad to hear from someone about improving this team

Do you have any set suggestions for Dachsbun, I havent found anything too much on forums for this thing

Also you have any suggestions who to swtich out for these 2?

Ok did some battles and made some changes and overall I think the team works significantly better now

Pokepaste: https://pokepast.es/933cb72d383ddca4

Minor changes:

Great Tusk
great tusk.gif

EVs: 8 Atk / 20 Def / 248 SpD / 232 Spe --> EVs: 252 HP / 4 Atk / 252 SpD
  • Changed the EV spread to give Great Tusk more focus on what its role is, plus its a little more bulky this way

Dragapult
dragapult.gif.m.gif

Thunderbolt --> Thunder
  • Apparently more power is better then accuracy, also a tool against rain (this may change in the future)

Chi-Yu
chi-yu.gif

Tera Type: Fire --> Tera Type: Grass
Psychic --> Tera Blast
  • Found out I have absolutely no answer to Water or Ground types on this team originally (Unaware Quagsire in particular), so this gives me some answers to them

Major Changes:

Hatterene --> Dondozo
931.png

Dondozo @ Leftovers
Ability: Unaware
Tera Type: Grass
EVs: 252 HP / 252 Def / 4 SpD
Impish Nature
- Liquidation
- Body Press
- Rest
- Sleep Talk

Dondozo replaces Hatterene and I've found that its working better then having Hatterene. This thing sits on so much and I'm honestly surprised about it. The set is pretty much standard RestTalk and its been working fairly well. Liquidation is obvious STAB (Its probably its most solid STAB move imo) and Body Press works wonders on this thing.

roaring moon.gif

Roaring Moon @ Choice Band
Ability: Protosynthesis
Tera Type: Dark
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 Def / 252 Spe
Adamant Nature
- Crunch
- Earthquake
- Dragon Claw
- U-turn

A lot has been reworked with Roaring Moon. First off, Dragon Claw is actually pretty good STAB pre Terastallizing since Iron Head was mostly an answer to deal with Fairies. The EV's were redone and the nature changed to Adamant to maximize the attack with protosynthesis and choice band. Tera Dark is to power up STAB, which I found is actually pretty good overall.

I dont have a lot of replays with the updated team (mostly cuz I forget to save them) but here are a couple:

If you just try to stop Chi-Yu, then the set will be this down below:
Dachsbun @ Leftovers
Ability: Well-Baked Body
Tera Type: Fighting
EVs: 252 HP / 4 Def / 252 SpD
Careful Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Wish
- Body Press
- Protect
- Roar
But I tested this pokemon several battles, not good as I think to ignite whole team, it can stop Chi-Yu, but team will lose some offense here .

About switching pokemon, I recommend you to change Dragapult , this pokemon is not that fit in this team.
I have some advice of replacing Dragapuit you can think about it

Sandy Shocks@ Choice Specs
Ability: Protosynthesis
Tera Type: Grass
EVs: 4 HP / 252 SpA / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Volt Switch
- Tera Blast
- Thunderbolt
- Earth Power
A really good special attacker with a good element, Electric and Round type can have better damage than the Dragapult. Volt switch can switch in Chi-Yu just like U-turn. Tera Grass can take some ground pokemon down. But this pokemon also has some problems.
First, speed is slower than dragapult, but you can choose Choice Scarf as your item.

Second, volt switch has more damage than u-turn, but the problem is when opponent use ground type pokemon may stop you to switch in.

Also, I suggest your Roaring Moon's tera type change to flying so that you can fix the team weak spot whicih is ground moves.

Roaring Moon @ Choice Band
Ability: Protosynthesis
Tera Type: Flying
EVs: 4 HP / 252 Atk / 252 Spe
Jolly Nature
- Crunch
- U-turn
- Earthquake
- Dragon Claw

tim031024 Thanks again for your help

I chose Dragapult on this team mostly cuz I felt the team needed some kind of speed control and it was the fastest and probably the most versatile Pokemon I could think of. Ill try and see how Sandy Shocks works out.

Also, I suggest your Roaring Moon's tera type change to flying so that you can fix the team weak spot whicih is ground moves.

Had that Tera Type initially but I changed it to Dark cuz I felt more power was needed. I can try it out again.

This team can’t switch in to Chi-Yu or fire types at all, which is a problem.

Believe it or not I played around with a SpDef Roaring Moon and changed Tusk to all out attacker and it worked. Might be worth a look.
