Project SS National Dex OU Teambuilding Competition

Our next featured mon is Dragonite. Being the OG dragon in the franchise, it's surprising that Dragonite stood the test of time and remained a top tier threat through power-creep for multiple generations. It's truly one of the staple mons that does its job well, no matter what job you give it. As a pseudo-legendary Pokémon, Dragonite has incredible stats and access to an arsenal of moves that can be put on a variety of sets.

Submissions will be open until Sunday, November 17th.

Are we finally seeing the steady revival of this tier?!?
u bet we are.

Cycle 13: Kommo-o

:sv/Kommo-o:

With great set variety and stats, Kommo-o can function as an incredible sweeper and defensive piece, utilising its defensive typing extremely well. With a unique signature move and Z-move granting it an omniboost, and defensive sets being able to effectively answer threats such as Mega Charizard-Y, Kommo-o can find itself fitting on a variety of teams. How will you build around this powerful pseudo-legendary?

Voting closes Friday May 2nd!

Really excited that this project is back up and running!

I'm pulling a team from my archives: as of late I've taken a liking to using Kommo-o as a SpDef wall for some of the tiers premier fire type threats in Mega Charizard Y and Volcarona when I could use the role compression as a rocker or phazer that other sponges like Dragonite or Mega Latias fail to offer.

:ss/Tapu Koko: :sm/Pinsir-Mega: :sv/Landorus-Therian: :sv/Jirachi: :sm/Greninja-Ash: :sv/Kommo-o:

I built this team a while back after my NDPL game against Devin where he loaded this Z Wild Charge Koko + Mega Medicham offense which we've already seen a few times in NDWC. The idea was more or less the same but with Mega Pinsir > Mega Medicham. It was a fun little project that ended up taking a very SM-esque path.

That being said:

ANTETOKOMMO-O (Kommo-o) @ Leftovers
Ability: Bulletproof
EVs: 252 HP / 188 SpD / 68 Spe
Careful Nature
- Stealth Rock
- Toxic
- Protect
- Drain Punch

Very straightforward set. Creeps Rotom-Wash and Heatran which creep Adamant Max Speed Band Tyranitar (I don't know why this is still a benchmark, who still runs Max Speed Band Tyranitar in 2025?) But the idea is obviously to maximize its special bulk. Bulletproof gives it a Weather Ball immunity which is extremely valuable into Mega Charizard Y where you'll find a reasonable number of players run it compared to the alternatives in Flamethrower and Fire Blast. The typing also grants natural resistances to Volcarona's STABs.

You could alternatively run Dragon Tail or Roar over Protect which could pair well on a hazard stack like this team.

Again, not a super serious team which has its holes - but I wanted to showcase defensive Kommo-o because I particularly like it as a SpDef rocker on offense builds that loads well into all weather and provides both a Fire-type and Stealth Rock resistance unlike Heatran which commonly gets melted by Mega Charizard Y's Scorching Sands or Volcarona's HP Ground.

A pleasant surprise to see this project revived :{D
Now seems like a good a time as any to finally post this team I've been holding on to for so very long.

War Pigs - Dual Screens HO

:ss/grimmsnarl: :ss/Excadrill: :ss/Gyarados-Mega: :ss/Celesteela: :ss/Kommo-o: :ss/Necrozma:

Here's a team that I hold very dear to my heart.
I built it at the very start of the generation when SS NDOU was the current gen at the time.
The initial idea was to build a team of powerful sweepers behind screens, but after tinkering with a few unique mons and movesets, it finally ended up being the current version you see here.
I've had a lot of success with this team on the NDOU ladder & it also helped me get a lot of voting requisites for various suspect tests over the years.

Kommo-o set used:

Brainwashed Mind (Kommo-o) (M) @ Kommonium Z
Ability: Bulletproof
Shiny: Yes
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 SpA / 252 Spe
Hasty Nature
- Clanging Scales
- Close Combat
- Poison Jab
- Clangorous Soul

A standard mixed Kommo-o set from the good ol' Gen 7 days with max Attack and max Speed.
The difference here being the omniboosting move Clangorous Soul over Stealth Rock/Taunt to give it that extra oomph in power.
Bulletproof is chosen as the ability to give it an immunity to moves such as Weather Ball from Zard-Y, Shadow Ball, Gyro Ball, etc.
Soundproof could also be used an alternative if you want an immunity to opposing Kommo-o Clanging Scales or its Z-move, it can also come in handy against Ditto, but Ditto would still have to lock into the right move to reverse sweep.

Flamethrower for Steel types like Mega-Scizor, Mega-Mawile & Corviknight, & Drain Punch for recovery are also viable options that could be used on this type of set, but Close Combat at +1 hits hard enough after rocks.

Excadrill is the team's designated lead, unless you're up against Mega-Lopunny or Mega-Medicham teams.
Mold Breaker allows it to set up Stealth Rock in the face of Magic Bounce mons like Mega-Sableye & Hatterene, & to punish Rotom-Wash leads with Earthquake.
Rapid Spin is for hazard control & Rock Tomb is to lower the opposing Pokemon's (mainly Defoggers like Lando-T, Tornadus-T, Zapdos) speed to allow my team to keep up Stealth Rock.
Rock Tomb can also surprise Gyarados, Volcarona & Charizard-Y, being able to potentially OHKO the latter two.

Grimmsnarl is the main enabler of my team. Dual Screens provide the buffs in defense that my setup sweepers need to steamroll the opponent.
Taunt is essential to prevent opposing hazards, Defog & status moves.
Spirit Break in conjunction with Taunt prevents Grimmsnarl from being setup fodder.

Mega Gyarados is the dedicated Stallbreaker of the team.
Thanks to having access to Mold Breaker, Taunt + Dragon Dance gives it a strong matuchup vs Stall teams, ignoring abilities like Unaware & Magic Bounce and stopping Haze from Toxapex.
Substitute is another good option over Taunt which can accomplish a similar thing. The one advantage it has over Taunt is avoiding a Scald burn.
Waterfall gives M-Gyara a way to overcome its checks thanks to its flinch chance.
Crunch is the other STAB move which hits water-resists for heavy damage.
Earthquake or Ice Fang could also be used to make it a DD 3 attacks set, but then it will struggle vs stall.
Behind screens it has the bulk to set up multiple Dragon Dances & it's also a really good Ash-Gren check.

Autotomize makes up for Celesteela's mediocre speed stat & lets it outspeed all unboosted threats in the tier.
Meteor Beam is a powerful move that deals significant amounts of damage to Fire types and Electric types that resist its STAB combination.
Power Herb turns Meteor Beam into a one-turn move, & if it KO's something, it can give you a +2 special attack boost in the same turn.
Air Slash has a chance to flinch down Celesteela's defensive answers.
Flamethrower hits the steel types such as Ferrothorn, Excadrill, Corviknight & Mega-Scizor.
Autotomize + Beast Boost can quickly snowball out of control & sweep many unprepared teams.

The combination of Clangorous Soul + Clangorous Soulblaze turns Kommo-o into a terrifying sweeper.
The ability to setup a double omniboost and just tear through opposing teams is pretty insane x{D
Kommo-o behind Screens is great into Weather teams especially & is also another good check to the dangerous Ash-Greninja.
Poison Jab hits the Fairy types that its STAB combination can't take care of.

Last but most certainly not least is the underrated MVP of this team, Necrozma! :{D
Mega Lopunny is a massive threat to HO teams, so I had to figure out a way to deal with it.
After going through a list & testing various possible options, I decided on Necrozma as my answer to it.
Like Celesteela, Necrozma makes up for it's middling speed with access to Autotomize.
It has enough speed to outspeed Scarf Seperior after an Autotomize.
Photon Geyser is an awesome STAB move that ignores abilities such as Unaware.
Heat Wave targets pesky steel types like Ferrothorn, Corviknight & Mega-Scizor.
Earth Power is essential for Heatran which otherwise walls it.
Its ability Prism Armor reduces super-effective damage to 3/4, this plus screens support makes Necrozma difficult to take down.
Weakness Policy punishes opponents who attempt to use super-effective coverage, giving it a +2 boost to its attacks.
Mons like Landorus-T, Mega-Scizor & Mega-Lopunny going for U-turn can proc the item & turn Necrozma into a massive threat.
Alongside the Autotomize speed boost, if it gets the Weakness Policy boosts, it can shred through unsuspecting opponents with ease.

The original version of the team had Magearna over Celesteela.
Magearna got banned in SS NDOU via suspect test in April 2021 after terrorizing the tier for about a year & a half.
After the ban, I replaced Magearna with Celesteela. While not the same offensive behemoth as Magearna, it still functions in a similar way with Beast Boost.

Hyper Offense has always been my favourite playstyle in singles.
Whether it's Hazard-stacking, Sticky Web, Weather HOs or Screens, anything fast-paced that challenges and encourages both the user & the opponent to be proactive is something I enjoy.
I believe this is a solid enough team, with decent outs versus various other team archetypes.

I wanted to share this team because it's my favourite Singles team that I've built & one that I've used a lot throughout SS NDOU & even modified for SV NDOU.
Go ahead and test it out for yourselves.
Most importantly, have fun, because making friends & having fun is what Pokemon is all about  :{D

:ss/Kommo-o:
Kommo-o @ Psychic Seed
Ability: Bulletproof
EVs: 240 HP / 48 Def / 220 Spe
Jolly Nature
- Scale Shot
- Bulk Up
- Drain Punch
- Substitute
Sub set up mons had always been great, but kommo never were between them until now.

In the special side, +1 SpDef has a free sub & bulk up in front of:
Heatran, Defensive Rotom, Standard Yard, non psy Rona, Blace, Slowbro, non haze Toxapex and Grash
In the physical side, high hp kommo allow to safely sub/bulk up in front of:
Kartana, Ferro, defensive Lando, Corvi, defensive Gliscor, Melmetal, beats Excadrill, any Msciz, Rillaboom and Mgyara

Fast kommo is always useful into the 80 base speed bench mark, that allow us to outspeed and beat 1v1:
Hoopa, non Z move Dnite, the rare Mamoswine, Mvenu and others

Scale shot boosting speed and being multi-hit move, theres some crazy interactions with the right set up (at least one Bulk Up + spdef boost):
Can tank and kill boots Kyurem back, 1v1s mLati, 1v1s non rest Manaphy, if you get lucky enough koomo 1v1s Zapdos lmao. Scale shot its so broken and funny.

In paper, looks complicated to correctly set up kommo into his maximun potencial, but thats why we have the perfect teammates

:ss/tapu-lele:
Tapu Lele @ Choice Scarf
Ability: Psychic Surge
EVs: 252 SpA / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Psychic
- Moonblast
- Focus Blast
- Psyshock/Future Sight
Activates the psy seed on kommo, needed speed control, Mmedi check, etc. Really appreciates the support on BU kommo abusing a lot of complicated steels that lele strugles with.
Lele scarf the best scarfer in the game by far not much to say about it.

:ss/toxapex:
Ryan Toxling (Toxapex) @ Black Sludge
Ability: Regenerator
Shiny: Yes
EVs: 248 HP / 108 Def / 148 SpD / 4 Spe
Bold Nature
- Poison Jab
- Recover
- Block
- Spite

This one is diabolical, people just forgot that trapex was something and keep sleeping on it. I always see the opposing clef/pex comming turn 1 vs pex just to trade scalds or koffs, we abusing that for sure. Without clef/pex, enemie's team always be looking sweept 6-0 by kommo somehow even with rough matchups, its crazy how abusive koomo could be with the right set up.

:ss/melmetal:
Melmetal @ Leftovers
Ability: Iron Fist
EVs: 40 HP / 212 Atk / 164 SpD / 92 Spe
Adamant Nature
- Double Iron Bash
- Thunder Punch
- Earthquake
- Thunder Wave
Another fairy abuser, that appreciate kommo's support on abusing the opposing Yard, Wastom, Gliscor, Rona, Heatran, Ferro, etc.
Kommo + Melm, really intuitive core with crazy synergy. Surprising Twave can make everything easier for the Kommo sweep, puts the hax gods on your side.

:ss/landorus-therian:
Landorus-Therian (M) @ Leftovers
Ability: Intimidate
EVs: 248 HP / 20 Atk / 240 SpD
Careful Nature
IVs: 25 Spe

- Earthquake
- Knock Off
- U-turn
- Stealth Rock
Papi lando the main rocker and the main check againts electric types, knock the zapdos, stops the koko's volturn, etc. Just the utility ground type doing what he knows better, 25 IV Speed for a slow uturn into bringing safe our teammates.}

:ss/mandibuzz:
Mandibuzz (F) @ Heavy-Duty Boots
Ability: Overcoat
EVs: 248 HP / 252 Def / 8 SpD
Bold Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Foul Play
- Roost
- Toxic
- Defog
Another glue mon that stops set up physical mons, great bird, underated defog and has some impressive calc into meta treats. Holds and OHKOs +2 Xard, non Z rock +2 chomp, non Z rock +2 lando, +2 kart, SD Msciz, and even outheals Mpert on rain. Mandibuzz its great cuz along side pex lele lando, you can pivot around all the Mmedi moves if you predict correctly.

Building and using this teams was so funny and its a experiencie thay you dont see often on ND SS, not sharing much reaplays cuz I wanna yall to give the team a try and look into the real potencial of sub BU kommo, really easy to set up.

Kommo solo'd Glisc Skarm Msableye Chansey to 6-0 stall
