1. INTRODUCTION
Hello guys! This isn’t going to be as long as my RMTs usually are, I wanted to get this out as quickly as possible. Who knows how long Magearna has in this tier. Secondly, I am very confident this team could achieve #1 without too much of an issue, but I don’t want to spend the time getting to that peak because as I said, Magearna is likely not going to be in OU for very long. Samurott-Hisui @ Focus Sash
Ability: Sharpness
Tera Type: Fairy
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Adamant Nature
- Ceaseless Edge
- Razor Shell
- Aqua Jet
- Taunt
Role / General Tips: This is going to be your lead almost always. Against Meowscarada, spam Ceaseless Edge and then go Dragapult and either Reflect or U-turn. Against Glimmora, use Ceaseless Edge into Aqua Jet to kill. Usually, just spam Ceaseless Edge. It sets a Spike each time it's used, making it pretty broken. Don’t always sack Samurott, though-- the priority, or just having a sack, could come in clutch late game.
Item: Focus Sash is vital given this lead can be OHKOd by a lot without it.
Tera Type: Tera Fairy lets Samurott live a Choice Banded Dragon Darts
Moves: Ceaseless Edge sets Spikes, it’s one of the best moves ever. It’s also boosted by Sharpness to an impressive 97.5 base power. Razor Shell is also Sharpness boosted, up to 112.5 base power. It’s very good for hitting Ting Lu, Great Tusk, and Magearna. Aqua Jet is a great priority move that allows for beating Glimmora leads and getting a little bit of chip against faster pokemon that can KO. Lastly, Taunt is fantastic for preventing setup, notably from Magearna, that try to abuse your lead. It can also prevent Defog from Corviknight.
EVs & Nature: Adamant makes it very likely for Ceaseless Edge + Aqua Jet to KO Glimmora leads.
Other Options: You can run more HP to live Dragapult Choice Band Dragon Darts without having to use Tera.
Dragapult @ Light Clay
Ability: Cursed Body
Tera Type: Fairy
EVs: 248 HP / 8 Def / 252 Spe
Jolly Nature
- Light Screen
- Reflect
- U-turn
- Curse
Role / General Tips: Dragapult is the Screen setter. I almost never sack Dragapult the first time I set up screens. It’s usually good to keep it around. Dragapult can also block Rapid Spin to keep Samurott’s Spikes up.
Item: Light Clay makes Light Screen and Reflect last 8 turns instead of 5, making it mandatory here.
Tera Type: Fairy lets Dragapult get up Screens in a pinch against other Dragapult, or escape an Ice Shard kill from Chien Pao or Baxcalibur.
Moves: Light Screen and Reflect make the damage dealt 1/2, making the sweepers on this team much more scary. U-turn is great for pivoting and finishing off Meowscarada leads. Lastly, Curse is a way for Dragapult to KO itself to pivot safely into another pokemon, and force residual damage on the opponent. It’s often good to use Curse against threatening setup pokemon like Dragonite and Garganacl.
EVs & Nature: Jolly Nature with maximum Speed lets Dragapult outspeed Chien Pao, Zamazenta, and more. Maximum HP makes Dragapult bulkier for tanking hits.
Other Options: I really don’t recommend any other sets, this set is pretty fantastic. However, Thunder Wave can be run over Curse or U-turn.
Sneasler @ Air Balloon
Ability: Unburden
Tera Type: Flying
EVs: 216 HP / 252 Atk / 4 Def / 36 Spe
Adamant Nature
- Swords Dance
- Close Combat
- Dire Claw
- Acrobatics
Role / General Tips: Sneasler is the star sweeper of the team and one of the best sweepers in the tier at the moment. Make sure you’re smart about when Sneasler enters. Your opponent will understand that you’re Air Balloon Unburden, so utilize it in a way that gives them no good choice. Don’t be too hasty to use your Tera either, you’re giving up a resistance to Sucker Punch and gaining a weakness to Ice Shard.
Item: Air Balloon gives the team a Ground immunity, gives Sneasler a nice temporary immunity, and also activates Unburden when popped.
Tera Type: Tera Flying boosts Acrobatics damage and gives Sneasler another way to avoid its weakness to Ground.
Moves: Swords Dance is fantastic for boosting, and it allows Sneasler to sweep a lot of teams. Close Combat is a fantastic strong STAB move that can muscle past a lot of neutral resists. Dire Claw has a 50% chance to inflict either Poison, Sleep, or Paralysis, making Sneasler a threat even against pokemon that theoretically wall it, such as Dondozo or Skeledirge.
EVs & Nature: Adamant Nature with max Attack investment maximizes Sneasler’s sweeping potential. 36 Speed EVs after an Unburden outspeeds Choice Scarf Meowscarada, Jolly Basculegion, and Booster Energy Iron Valiant. The rest is in HP to maximize bulk.
Other Options: You could run Night Slash if you’re encountering lots of defensive Gholdengo or Galarian Slowking. I would run Night Slash over Acrobatics or Dire Claw.
Magearna @ Leftovers
Ability: Soul-Heart
Tera Type: Water
EVs: 248 HP / 8 Def / 252 Spe
Bold Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Calm Mind
- Draining Kiss
- Stored Power
- Iron Defense
Role / General Tips: Magearna is your answer to Trick Room and overall a fantastic sweeper. It’s also the team’s main response to Rain teams. Save Magearna, and save your Tera until you see a winpath with this monster. You’ll win a LOT of games with it.
Item: Leftovers makes Magearna the annoying, never-dying monster that it is.
Tera Type: Tera Water removes all of Magearna’s weaknesses, and adds a helpful resistance to Water and Fire. Notably this makes Magearna resist Surging Strikes, which is problematic since it bypasses Reflect.
Moves: Calm Mind boosts Special Attack and Special Defense. Iron Defense boosts Physical Defense. Together, in combination with the option to Tera, Magearna is nearly impossible to KO. Draining Kiss keeps Magearna’s health high, and Stored Power obliterates everything with a massive base power after a few boosts.
EVs & Nature: Bold Nature gives extra defense, this can be very helpful against Ursaluna, Dragonite, and Basculegion. Max Speed lets Magearna outspeed Kingambit and other Magearna in CM Stored Power wars. Max HP gives Magearna incredible bulk.
Other Options: You can play around with the EVs, but I wouldn't change the moves or Tera type.
Volcarona @ Heavy-Duty Boots
Ability: Flame Body
Tera Type: Ground
EVs: 4 Def / 252 SpA / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Quiver Dance
- Giga Drain
- Tera Blast
- Fiery Dance
Role / General Tips: Volcarona is another sweeper for the team.
Item: Heavy Duty boots is crucial, given Volcarona’s hazard weakness.
Tera Type: Tera Ground gives Volcarona a powerful Tera Blast to destroy Toxapex and Heatran.
Moves: Quiver Dance is a fantastic boosting move, I use it almost every game. Giga Drain OHKOs Urshifu-Rapid after a Quiver Dance, and it can help keep Volcarona healthy, which is important if the opponent tries to swap around and stall for Reflect to run out, hoping to kill with Extreme Speed or Sucker Punch with another Pokemon. Tera Blast ruins the pokemon that resist Giga Drain and Fiery Dance, such as Toxapex, Iron Moth, Heatran, and Ceruledge.
EVs & Nature: Timid Nature lets Volcarona outspeed Urshifu-Rapid-Strike after a Quiver Dance. Maximum Special Attack and Speed make Volcarona a powerful sweeper.
Other Options: Tera Fairy can be used to help against Chien-Pao and Dragonite, but then Toxapex and Heatran will wall you. Volcarona is also probably the most replaceable pokemon on this team, so if you want to slap something on, this is where to do it.
Zamazenta-Crowned @ Rusted Shield
Ability: Dauntless Shield
Tera Type: Fire
EVs: 4 Atk / 252 Def / 252 Spe
Jolly Nature
- Iron Defense
- Crunch
- Body Press
- Behemoth Bash
Role / General Tips: Zamazenta helps stop Physical setup sweepers, act as an emergency defensive wall, and it can often sweep late game. Try not to swap it out unless you need to, since the Dauntless Shield +1 Defense boost only activates once.
Item: This pokemon has to run the Rusted Shield.
Tera Type: Tera Fire allows Zamazenta to avoid Flame Body from Volcarona, and get past Will-O-Wisp users like Dragapult and Rotom-Wash.
Moves: Iron Defense boosts Defense by 2 stages, which is great for boosting the damage of Body Press, Zamazenta’s main STAB move. Crunch hits Ghost types like Dragapult, Gholdengo, and Psychic types such as Galarian Slowking. Lastly, Behemoth Bash is a strong STAB move that can reliably deal solid damage and hit Fairies hard.
EVs & Nature: Jolly Nature with max Speed makes the most of Zamazenta’s fantastic Speed stat. Maximum Defense gives Body Press the most power possible.
Other Options: Tera Ghost or Tera Fairy can be run over Tera Fire. You could also run regular Zamazenta over this pokemon if you’re concerned about the Chien-Pao matchup. The set for that will be below:
Zamazenta @ Leftovers
Ability: Dauntless Shield
Tera Type: Electric
EVs: 4 Atk / 252 Def / 252 Spe
Jolly Nature
- Iron Defense
- Body Press
- Crunch
- Substitute
4. THREAT LIST
Iron Defense Magearna handles most sets easily, but Encore sets can be very scary. Utilize Dire Claw and Curse Dragapult against these. Also, just hit it. Encore sets don’t have Roost.
The team has no great swap in to Salt Cure. We have a lot of ways to deal heavy damage to Garganacl though, and Tera Ground Volcarona uses it as setup fodder. Dragapult Curse can help force Garganacl out in a tight spot.
It’s an HO team, so Ditto is pretty tough. Note that Sneasler Unburden is not copied by Ditto, so your Sneasler will outspeed a Choice Scarf Ditto if Unburden is activated.
