About a week before this battle happened, I felt an incredible urge to write a warstory. Yet, never had I ever been through a battle that could be called great warstory material. I was ready anytime, so I simply let things go as they were supposed to, not thinking about it too much. Little did I suspect that shortly after that same urge came I would experience the greatest battle of my whole life…
This is a battle brought to you fresh from Saturday’s Smogon Tour. I had played my way through the first 2 rounds, eagerly awaiting for Max to post round 3’s pairings. Moments later, there was the link, and after taking a deep breath to cleanse my mind from nervousness, I clicked it. After scanning through the pairings, there it was: The_Elitist vs jimbo422. I had never heard of jimbo422, and without a moment’s hesitation, I looked for such a username on Shoddy’s user list. Little after the challenge was made, Jimbo and I began the battle.
The Elitist’s Team (by order of appearance):
Jimbo’s Team (by order of appearance):
Rules: Evasion Clause, Freeze Clause, OHKO Clause, Sleep Clause, Species Clause, Strict Damage Clause, Timed Battle.
Notes:
-Battle log will be in bold.
-Comments will be in plain text.
-In-battle chat development will be in italics.
-Users entering / leaving the room will be ommited.
-Leftovers and Ice Body recovery will be ommited. The following Pokémon are holding Leftovers: The Elitist’s Abomasnow, Garchomp, Walrein, Spiritomb, Tentacruel and Jimbo’s Suicune, Bronzong, Heatran.
-Hail damage will be ommited.
-When both players are using the same Pokémon, Jimbo’s will have a * after its name.
And with that… may the battle begin!
vs
Jimbo sent out Roserade (lvl 100 Roserade ?).
The Elitist sent out Abomasnow (lvl 100 Abomasnow ?).
Abomasnow's Snow Warning whipped up a hailstorm!
Hail began to fall!
Hm… a Roserade leading. This was a clear advantage for me, as Abomasnow was prepared to survive such hits as the likes of HP [Fire] and fire back Blizzard. However, fearing Sleep Powder, a switch into my Sleep Talker was imminent.
vs
The Elitist switched in Spiritomb (lvl 100 Spiritomb ?).

Roserade used Hidden Power.
Spiritomb lost 19% of its health.
The hail continues to fall.

Woah… offensive right from the start, are we? I myself had never been a great fan of offensive play styles, and seeing Roserade trying to save its thorns by using the “KO before KOed” motto made me think that this was going to be a pressuring game. He didn’t put me to sleep, so I was ready to take such a move. However much was uncertain at this point, so I chose to scout with Dark Pulse.
vs
Jimbo switched in Suicune (lvl 100 Suicune).
Suicune is exerting its pressure!
Spiritomb used Dark Pulse.
Suicune lost 20% of its health.
The hail continues to fall.

Now he’s made me think… Is that Roserade scarfed or something? Perhaps he didn’t want to waste the mighty Sleep Clause on such a cursing spirit. Now I was thinking how good my decision was to not expose Abomasnow to the occult fiery move, as that would make it incapable of returning with impunity to the battle field, now that the northern winds had arrived.
vs
The Elitist switched in Abomasnow (lvl 100 Abomasnow ?).

No less did I expect at the point, and the abominable Christmas tree was more than ready to show Jimbo’s Suicune who was the true ruler of the mountain’s wintery cold. Predicting a switch, I put up my Substitute before attempting to plant seeds on whatever came in.
vs
Jimbo switched in Bronzong (lvl 100 Bronzong).
Abomasnow used Substitute.
Abomasnow lost 25% of its health.
Abomasnow made a substitute!
The hail continues to fall.
: 81%
: 100%
Hm… great. He was either trying to take a scarfed Wood Hammer or going for a set-up of the fearsome stealthy rocks. Laying them down would hinder me greatly, given how Abomasnow would lose walling capabilities. The ruler of the arctic would be no more with intelligent playing to wear to down.
vs
Abomasnow used Leech Seed.
Bronzong was seeded!
Bronzong used Reflect.
A barrier was formed!
The hail continues to fall.
Bronzong's health was sapped by leech seed!
Bronzong lost 12% of its health.
Abomasnow regained health!
Abomasnow restored 11% of its health.
The hail continues to fall.

Reflect? Surprisingly, that could play in my favour. It was the excuse I needed to hide the existence of Focus Punch in my set. I was therefore ready to wear it down with Blizzard and Leech Seed, whereas the question remained: “Wood Hammer / Grass Knot or Focus Punch?”
vs
Abomasnow used Blizzard.
It's not very effective...
Bronzong lost 13% of its health.
Bronzong used Stealth Rock.
Pointed stones float in the air around your foe's team!

Bronzong's health was sapped by leech seed!
Bronzong lost 12% of its health.

No less than I expected to be done at some point. I’d have to play really carefully from there on out, so I could have a shot at removing those troublesome rocks while hurting his Team severely with Abomasnow. Of course, he was setting them up at the cost of letting me keep the Substitute and some HP, so I doubted he was going to let me remove them that easily.
vs
Abomasnow used Blizzard.
It's not very effective...
Bronzong lost 14% of its health.
Bronzong used Gyro Ball.
It's super effective!

And that’s when the floating toilet finally breaks the Substitute. I couldn’t say I was surprised, he seemed more than ready to sacrifice his Bronzong for the sake of getting a switch-in without Abomasnow keeping its painful Substitute. So there was only one thing to get ready for… brace yourself, Abomasnow!
vs
Abomasnow used Substitute.
Abomasnow lost 25% of its health.
Abomasnow made a substitute!
Bronzong used Explosion.
The substitute took damage for Abomasnow!
Abomasnow's substitute faded!
Jimbo's Bronzong fainted.
The hail continues to fall.
6-5
Well, Abomasnow was done sucking… Bronzong’s HP. Yet Jimbo could’ve used Gyro Ball once more to wear Abomasnow down, if only a bit. Yet I figure he predicted a switch, and gave a shot at a premature detonation. Can’t blame him for trying…
vs
Jimbo switched in Heatran (lvl 100 Heatran ?).
: 81%
: 100%
And in comes the lava spider… what else could it be but Heatran? It’s always Heatran. I breathed deeply in acceptance of what was a cliché move already. This was my opportunity to get rid of the rocks, yet if he outpredicted what was another cliché move at that situation and called forth the power of the earth, it would cost me dearly. Therefore, I tried a more safe bet by switching in the mighty Garchomp, who hates the thought of being stuck in a freezing Team, by the way.
vs
The Elitist switched in Garchomp (lvl 100 Garchomp ?).
Pointed stones dug into Garchomp.
Garchomp lost 6% of its health.

Unlike most, this was a bulky Garchomp, made to withstand the low temperatures of the mountain hail. Knowing that, the poison increased its frustration level. However, I was mean to it, meaning I’d make it stay a bit more to lay down the rocks on the switch.
vs
Jimbo switched in Garchomp* (lvl 100 Garchomp ?).
Garchomp used Stealth Rock.
Garchomp*'s reflect wore off!

Good move. The Reflect was on, and Earthquake was the obvious choice since Bronzong was dead and was the only member of his Team I knew to take no damage from Ground. My Garchomp was bulky, but not Cressilia, so Outrage would end it, not to mention it was slower for sure.
vs
The Elitist switched in Walrein (lvl 100 Walrein ?).
Pointed stones dug into Walrein.
Walrein lost 25% of its health.
Garchomp used Earthquake.
Walrein lost 34% of its health.
The hail continues to fall.
: 53%
: 87%
Ouch. Damn you, Stealth Rocks. Lucky me that Walrein’s fat Icy Body stretches out to hug the world, and the snowy mountains with it, giving it a much needed recovery. Again, good move by Jimbo, who I believe to have predicted a switch-in by Heatran, a common sight in Hail Teams. I feared an aggressive Outrage by his part, not knowing if it had Yache or Scarf, and felt bullied by the lead-off HP [Fire]. That same move changed the course of the game, as it made me play a lot more aggressively than if he had used the sleeping powder.
vs
Jimbo switched in Heatran (lvl 100 Heatran ?).
Pointed stones dug into Heatran.

What the…?! It has Leftovers, Toxic, and high Speed? Poor me… that critical hit really made the scary-looking jelly fish’s day. Think positively… at least you get a free switch into your CBed mammal with tusks. Huge, frightening tusks.
vs

I once remember a user saying “Oh my God, it’s a Mamoswine! Children, get in the car” in one of my battles once I brought it out, and with good reason. The thing was Adamant with max Speed, and everyone just underestimates how fast a Mamoswine is. As fast as Heracross, that is.

Heatran used Fire Blast.
Heatran's attack missed!
Mamoswine used Earthquake.

Dear me, that I wasn’t expecting. It’s one thing to outspeed Tentacruel, but max Speed Mamoswine?! With Leftovers and Toxic? I seemed to have misunderstood the purpose of that Heatran at the time. Good thing Snow Cloak paid off, those 65% of hitting looked pretty grim anyways… ^.^

Well he sure likes to take risks. Had I stayed in, Sleep Powder would have 55% hit rate due to Snow Cloak. He must’ve predicted a switch, however, as he had had plenty of opportunities to see I hate taking risks. It paid out well for him, and now he was free to set up the poisonous spikes. Tentacruel’s death had cost me, as now they would be free to torment my Team.

Ok, damn. Not only did he critical hit me, but his rampage ended, meaning it would switch on out on the obvious Ice Shard. This more than made up for the Fire Blast miss, as if Fire Blast hadn’t critically hit Tentacruel, I’d spin and switch out, being able to absorb Toxic Spikes later on and get a different battle altogether. Yet, I planned carefully and ended up being rewarded for it, not giving up as there was still a slim chance Mamoswine would survive. I hope you enjoyed it as much as I found it thrilling to write. ;)
It is now time to give the deserved Props and Slops:
Props to:
- Abomasnow, for being such a pain in the opponent’s neck, causing things to explode out of frustration and hiding Focus Punch until the last minute.
- Garchomp, for laying down the rocks that allowed this killing range based victory, regardless of its cold.
- Mamoswine, for surviving poison at 12% and pulling of an incredible victory!
- All of Jimbo’s Team, as every Pokémon served a purpose other than taking sleep or being haxed to death… -.-‘
- Jimbo, for giving me the most incredible match of my life.
- mien, for creating the basis of this Team and being my overall supporter and friend. =) Thanks, mien.
Slops to:
- Tentacruel, for eating a Fire Blast in its critical spot.
- Walrein, for never having the chance of doing it’s “gay stalling”, as some have dubbed it while watching my matches and for not being able to revenge-kill Garchomp.
- Spiritomb, for being a Sleep absorber and having no WoW, although that is entirely my fault, so slops to me.
- Heatran, for tricking me into believing it was a slow, bulky set. This is, however, also my fault. So more slops to me, I guess…
EDIT: Oh wow, this is freaking long...

Abomasnow used Blizzard.
It's not very effective...
Bronzong lost 13% of its health.
Bronzong used Stealth Rock.
Pointed stones float in the air around your foe's team!
The hail continues to fall.
Bronzong's health was sapped by leech seed!

Abomasnow used Blizzard.
It's not very effective...
Bronzong lost 14% of its health.
Bronzong used Gyro Ball.
It's super effective!

Abomasnow's substitute faded!
The hail continues to fall.
Bronzong's health was sapped by leech seed!
Bronzong lost 12% of its health.

Abomasnow used Substitute.
Abomasnow lost 25% of its health.
Abomasnow made a substitute!
Bronzong used Explosion.

Jimbo switched in Heatran (lvl 100 Heatran ?).

The Elitist switched in Garchomp (lvl 100 Garchomp ?).

Heatran used Toxic.
Garchomp was badly poisoned!

Unlike most, this was a bulky Garchomp, made to withstand the low temperatures of the mountain hail. Knowing that, the poison increased its frustration level. However, I was mean to it, meaning I’d make it stay a bit more to lay down the rocks on the switch.

Jimbo switched in Garchomp* (lvl 100 Garchomp ?).
Garchomp used Stealth Rock.
Garchomp*'s reflect wore off!
The hail continues to fall.
Garchomp is hurt by poison!
Garchomp lost 12% of its health.

Good move. The Reflect was on, and Earthquake was the obvious choice since Bronzong was dead and was the only member of his Team I knew to take no damage from Ground. My Garchomp was bulky, but not Cressilia, so Outrage would end it, not to mention it was slower for sure.

The Elitist switched in Walrein (lvl 100 Walrein ?).
Pointed stones dug into Walrein.
Walrein lost 25% of its health.
Garchomp used Earthquake.
Walrein lost 34% of its health.

Well that was obvious. Stupid me, who kept focused on the game’s first move. I was going for some more free recovery, as I love how the fat walrus likes snow. If he’s happy, so am I.

Walrein used Protect.
Walrein protected itself!
Heatran used Toxic.

What the…?! It has Leftovers, Toxic, and high Speed? Poor me… that critical hit really made the scary-looking jelly fish’s day. Think positively… at least you get a free switch into your CBed mammal with tusks. Huge, frightening tusks.

The Elitist switched in Mamoswine (lvl 100 Mamoswine ?).
Pointed stones dug into Mamoswine.
Mamoswine lost 12% of its health.

Jimbo switched in Roserade (lvl 100 Roserade ?).
Pointed stones dug into Roserade.
Roserade lost 12% of its health.

In came Roserade again… the lack of Leftovers recovery and being slower than Heatran made my item obvious: he knew the pre-historical elephant was CBed now. So I had no choice but to switch on the incoming Gass Knot…

Heh… what was I expecting? The poor thing was sick as hell. Going for another Earthquake was hopeless, as Rest was unavoidable. Garchomp finally started crying out of deep frustration, mixed with an irritating cold and poisoned blood. Its days were counted.

I had no time… I had no Wood Hammer. Right now I was happy not to have revealed Focus Punch, as a suicidal Wood Hammer would hurt Suicune a whole lot. He knew this, so in came Roserade.

What else did I expect? He was going for a sweep, and my only way to stop him was with the fat Walrus, who couldn’t switch into an Outrage. With his sleep-inducer gone, I felt I no longer had a reason to keep Spiritomb around, it had to do as a sacrifice.

I still didn’t know if it had Yache or Choice Scarf, so I wasn’t ready to take the risk. If it did have Yache, Ice Shard would fail to KO it. So I was going to revenge kill it with my best bet.

Since that didn’t happen, I was literally screwed.

As it can be seen… Mamoswine was at 12%. The result of that match was a matter of decimals. It was all down to that same turn. I was shaking… yet I was ready to accept any result. I wrote “gg” in the chat and pressed “Send” and “Use” Ice Shard one after the other in a quick motion.

…And so ended the greatest battle I have ever had. I was still shaking, thinking how I ended up pulling that one off. Any mistake would result in my loss.
