Smogon Premier League XVI - Commencement Thread

Hi, there. This message is addressed to the captains of the spl, I registered for the form because being new I do not think I have the opportunity to be taken this year for the spl which is quite logical, what would interest me it would be to see how the tournament is going so if a captain is interested I can help a team as a helper for almost all generations of sv to dpp, if you are interested thank you for contacting me on discord: nemosse
Thank you for reading this message and good luck to the captains as well as the participant having registered.
I cannot speak for the managers of the teams in SPL, but if you're looking to stay up to date with how the tournament is going, we'll be doing extensive live coverage of the tournament over at the smogon twitch
Make sure to follow and turn on notifications to see when we go live!

Hello SPL managers,

A lot of you might know me as the goober that got Araquanid to SV OU level usage, and I'm looking to make my debut on the tournament landscape in smogon. As for my skills, I am extremely knowledgeable in both building and playing Hyper Offense structures in OU and have even had one of my teams featured in the previous SPL. Here are some of my accomplishments below:

https://pastebin.com/Diy8VPLF

Although I am relatively new to competitive Pokémon in general and most likely won’t be drafted, I am applying none the less to gain some experience in how to do so, and if drafted, to also gain experience in the SV OU metagame while also assisting my team in the process. If you have any questions or would like me to participate in try outs, please DM me on discord (username is duckular). Thank you and good night tri-state area!

Prospective managers

I didn't want to skip on spl but I also don't plan to invest the time I usually do in this tour, please dont expect me to actively support any slot if you buy me, except maybe giving pointers/teams here and there. As for the tiers, my preference is RBY as highlighted in the sign up post. If you got something else in mind since I didnt bind off anything outside of ADV and BW, proceed with caution or contact me about it, for your own benefice.

Buenos días
For this new season I wanted to specify a few things, to make this short this time if you are going to slot me in oras I would like some support (real support), also I would also like to play ss/sm if there is the possibility without having to do a full season in oras. I might be not able to play the first two weeks of february.
I am not used to writing this, but why not this time. Here I leave some players who at the moment could easily star or otherwise be solid subs in oras ou: Destro16 NoName6293 Metallica126 Always! kingofking
Here we come to the most important part of this post, I hope that this time managers don't let my friend hellpowna get away, it's time to give him the chance he's deserved for so long, there was probably no need to write this, but really don't let the silent killer of gsc get away.

Hello SPL managers, if you are interested in buying me, id like you to know beforehand:

Welcome to this new channel of mine, everybody. As you might immediately hear, I’m a former German movie reviewer who didn’t make it big on the national market. I reevaluated my possibilities on YouTube and came to the conclusion that even the scraps of the international market might be more profitable than my last mediocre success in Germany. The adpocalypse struck me hard back then, so we will see how much exposure this channel will get now. These three types of content will be presented to you on this channel:

- The main content: these are elaborate, scripted, and edited videos I will only be able to turn out once a month, if not even only once in two month. We will see.

Truthfully, Gefährlicher Random

real schizo hours but while the part about business/involvement still stands, i decided to change my tier preferences in my updated sign-up

Just a quick suggestion for next year's signups: idk if you already considered it but could be a good idea to add an additional line in the signups form so that people doesn't have to write on commencement about potential activity issues and managers can get all the infos from a single place

this is by design, your suggestion would increase pricefixing instances by a lot

forcing them to post in commencement forces potential pricefixers to be extra shameless about it, and you can haha react them for it. big positive for the competitive environment

signups should be simple, 99.9% of people don't have extraordinary circumstances worth noting. the 0.1% can just post about them

Originally, I was planning on making a bigger and more detailed post. As probably still the most addicted spectator of ORAS OU replays (although I pretty much consider myself retired for now), I've been watching countless of Masters, OUPL, RoAPL, ORASPL, Circuit as well as discordtours replays throughout the last year. That's why I feel like I wanna take a short moment and mention players who I think should get a playing spot or at least deserve to be considered.

I feel like I don't have to talk about Niko, Santu, RufflesPro, pj, c0mp and NoName6293 and their qualities in ORAS at this point. GL to y'all this season!

Besides that players that I feel need to start are Savouras, who has taken a really big step forward in recent years and plays just incredibly consistent, lighthouses who seems to be in better shape than ever and is a creative mind and also ACR1 who is just a good player overall. I feel like these 3 definitely have what it takes.

Honorable mentions also to Always!, Destro16, kingofking, Paprikaflow, Nor, Metallica126 who are all looking to give their SPL debut (i think?). These guys can definitely be considered for a starting spot, I just don't consider them locks, but they have a lot of potential. And then you also have more proven guys in erz, devin, Vulpix03 and Vileman, MANNAT and Luigi too who could be decent picks. Ofc you have plenty of other options, these are mostly the people I'd consider mainers. Pool will be wild, it is tough to predict who will come out on top, but I wish y'all good luck! (hope I didn't forget anyone)

Hello managers,

I am signing up for SPL, which I originally planned to skip, because of the community donations that funded me. I just want to make it abundantly clear that I won't be able to play or prep until after February 10th. Since I'm not known as a prepper/supporter, I hope there aren’t any expectations to be active until then, as I will be much more focused on a large exam that's important for my career. After that, I'd love to play DPP since it's a tier I'm really interested in learning, but would definitely need support since I haven't built in the tier before. I am not enthralled to play other tiers but will leave the option open as an emergency. Wanted to be honest about my intentions because I want to participate in the tournament but need some assistance in doing so + some activity problems. This would be the case for any manager trio I end up with

BW is a weird field this year without some regulars (sign up rn dice!!!) and a few people are inquiring with me about who will be in it, so I just wanted to go through sign-ups and give people a rundown.

This is just my limited and biased opinion, so please do not take my word as the law and pick whoever you want, value people differently, and prove me wrong if you think I rated someone incorrectly -- BW has a great crop of prospects, but I will not pretend to know everything about everyone. And also I am frequently wrong as Smogon's history has shown, so yea

SoulWind: Obvious -- historic top BW player, doesn't need anything else said.

GaryTheGengar: Clear SPL BW starter if he is active, wants to BW, and cares.

Aliss: Not first name that comes to your mind as a BW player, but check her results this year. Dominant in circuit with quality wins vs mainers and some previous SPL players. May need some support or may not as I do not know her building process, but absolutely capable as a pilot in this field if she prefers BW. Could see her elsewhere, too.

Brine/Bri~: Strong BWPL and shows some promise with team selection I would personally say, but not a ton else to go off of yet. What we have seen is clearly a step in the right direction though! Feels like maybe more of a 2026 pick, but stranger things have happened of course.

Cow: Underrated player, unlucky BWPL with good year throughout the circuit and ADPL. Finished strong with finals in BW Last Chance, only losing to Sergi in tight 3 gamer and Sergi pretty much owned everyone during 2024 between Circuit and Invitational, so this is not exactly a bad loss either. SPL field would be an adjustment for Cow, but improved a lot throughout the year and I can see more improvement with more experience.

Cryolite: Mix of old school experience from BW CG ladder days and new school metagame adaptations. Strong BW cup run with some highlight wins and exciting teams, but Cryolite did not play earlier in year, probably costing him circuit playoffs. BWPL started slow for him, but did rebound nicely. I would label Cryolite as a higher risk, higher reward option. I know this guy can beat good players, but I do think consistency could be a struggle and he would benefit from a larger sample this year.

Dusk/Eternal Sunset/Dawn to the dusk: Good player who did ok in BWPL and clearly cares about the tier, his teams, and growing, but probably could use a bit more experience? Struggled in a solid ADPL pool, but used some cool teams throughout the campaign. Not as familiar with him as some others in this post, but feels like there's some good foundation with room to grow, will be hard for him to break into a competitive field here I think.

Evakiyama: Less familiar with her specific style than most of the others here, but solid at a minimum. She seems competent in BW and ADV while being active, but I could not firsthand attest to her BW level relative to some of the more proven names on this list.

Fakee: Plays BW at a fine level. I honestly refuse to expand a ton because every battle chat I see him in makes me want to close PS with all the spam, but he did well in RoAPL and then struggled in BWPL. Probably hard to see him as starting in any particular tier, but he has played a ton of BW OU unofficially among some other formats and is at least noteworthy.

Feaniix: Hard to judge. Has defeated SPL caliber players and done very well when they play in the past; there is clearly the potential of an SPL player in there, but he has not played quite as frequently of late in the circuit + managed BWPL this year. IIRC he did exceedingly well in RoA tours this year though (RoAWC and RoAPL come to mind), but only average in ADPL. Feaniix definitely favored a specific style or two, but he is capable of using proactive teams to change things up. There's also some outside noise as some BW community members will be eager to tell you, but I have done some digging on it and came up empty in trying to prove any of it -- I actually think it's a tired narrative at this point, so that does not factor into my internal calclus when judging the player here at all.

Jaajgko: Similar dynamic to Feaniix in pretty much every regard of the above description. Lost to me to start BWPL run, but then won the next 6 against good opponents. I do not know them well enough to say a ton more, but clearly doing a lot right to have good BWPL and BW Cup runs.

Lily: Could see her play elsewhere before BW, but would translate nicely with support. Higher ceiling than most people listed here. She has already built some of her own BW teams and defeated good players in the tier, but obviously she could play other generations like SV. If she ends up in BW, try to cap the Flygon team at 1 use for everyone's sake.

magialice: She is an underrated player who probably does not get much recognition because of ungodly timezone. Maybe a year or so away from being considered for this field, but did qualify for circuit and has shown nice range in teams and went positive in RoAWC with a few good wins. Struggled in RoAPL earlier this year and I think continued experience will lend itself well here, so could just be a matter of time and reps. This field could be uphill, but anything is possible.

marsandback: Very good player who is capable of being a (perhaps risky) starter or substitute in this field now. There will be growing pains, but mars did well in the circuit this year, defeating a number of SPL caliber opponents and displaying good range. Building/idea creation feels like a strong point to me here, but it is also raw as nothing compensates for SPL/top level experience, which they do not yet have. mars drew me in circuit and I switched up styles a lot, got favorable game states, and won -- I do not really think mars did a ton wrong in this set. I am curious to see how mars rebounds from experiences like this and I do think mars has potential to hold up in this field, but it is up to managers if they get a shot.

MeEsSm: Perhaps the most underrated BW player in this post, in my opinion. Yea, he is not atop anyone's board or close, but there is a lot of good there and it will continue to develop nicely I bet. He sees the metagame well, knows numerous styles, and is not afraid to take risks while knowing the calculus behind them across the matchup spectrum. I have prepped a lot with MeEsSm and his feedback has helped me improve firsthand while adjusting to a more modern BW. I do not thnk his resume screams SPL BW player yet. Average BWPL, but under the hood there were some unfortunate moments in there and strength of schedule was strong. Dominated through BW Invitational qualifiers, but did not live up to hype in the main tournament (although I think current form/experience Meessm would've won the second set at least). Missed out on circuit, but was a few breaks away -- we are telling the same "not quite, but almost..." story repeatedly here and I think MeEsSm's better than the sum of his body of work thus far. It would be a stretch to say Meessm is outright deserving of a starting slot in SPL, but I can vouch to his ability to at least be strong support option, if not a starting option, in this tournament for BW. At worst, a name to look out for in the near future in BW, but potential to be a current day dark horse at best.

Monai: Throw out his debut season. That field was stronger than this one ever will be, that Monai was way less experienced than current day Monai, and a lot has changed since then. Monai had a poor BWPL record, but he did fine in BW OU and lost a few in NU. He had a strong year throughout circuit tournaments, won his first circuit playoff set despite loading Probopass game 1 (he will swear by it and technically it is niche viable, but that's for another post) and then took Sergi to a close 3 gamer to round out his 2024. Monai also dominated RoAWC in BW, including winning the tournament clinching game, and went 8-2 in ADPL BW. He has become more confident in his own prep and play since his last SPL run. I think Monai is worth 3-5k as a starter or supporter who can easily slot in, but I admiteddly do not think his ceiling is as high as some of the other prospects I list above. I would argue his current floor is higher, he will have already learned some lessons that they have yet to, and the funk of his debut should not be held against him.

Quarante8: This guy can outplay anyone with ease and slotting against him in circuit used to always scare me personally, but I do think his range is not quite as widespread as some others. This can easily be worked on and I do not doubt in Q8, who also plays RBY. He did pretty well throughout the circuit as usual, went positive in BWPL (slightly worse in RoAPL though), and definitely could upset some proven SPL BW players. I do wonder about his prep and ability to adapt to a field with a lot more experienced opponents with proven supporters being there. He fell short in the first round of circuit playoffs against Aliss, but, aside from this, he had a strong year and has been one of the better BW players out there the last couple of years.

Rewer: He popped off in SV of all generations in OLT, but he is a fine buy in BW if that's what he wants. Mixed bag of results historically, but Rewer is a competent BW player who remains familiar and capable at this level. I do not know what he wants to play and have not spoken a ton about SPL with him, so hard to comment a ton further. Definitely an option in this field and I assume he will get bought for one tier or another.

W2S/Wait2Seconds: Veteran BW player who is very competent at the metagame. I have not teamed much with them or talked a ton with them over the years, but I respect W2S as a player for sure. His results this year did not stand out a ton in a good or a bad way with a weaker RoAPL and stronger ADPL, but if you are looking with someone who has experienced BW opinions, W2S has played for the greater portion of the last 10 years and done so with consistency at a pretty good level. Probably on the outside looking in, but he would use solid teams.

I am sure I missed some people (I think Elodin prefers DPP, for example, and plenty of other cases) and please do not take it personally as I am just tired at this point. Good luck to everyone in the tournament!

Gonna share a few quick thoughts about GSC players that I believe that should get a chance in SPL (based mostly on people that I've played against in tournament / ladder games or with exceptional recent tour results), and a brief reasoning behind them, so here it goes:

Highlights

hellpowna
- hellpowna not only did did a killer RCoP / GSC Swiss / Invitational run, but developed an authentic style of playing / crafting his teams - pulling the trigger, or trying to stay ahead, or doing your best to struggle from tricky situations without losing your cool is hella important to get grab results in tour games, and I have seen hellpowna doing these kind of things a lot of times in the ladder / tournament games that I've watched and played against him.

Rubyblood - Won GSC Seasonal in 2021 and did an excellent GSC Cup run last year... I guess at this point Rubyblood is probably in a "GSC semi-staple" situation? (similar to Zokuru / vani / choolio / Chiles), but nonetheless I know that he's hungry for a good SPL run, and I wouldn't be surprised if he managed to get a positive record in this SPL.

Grinders / Enthusiasts

MrSoup
- To be honest I didn't play / watched so many of Soup's games, but I gotta respect his Circuit / Swiss / ladder / Invitational results. Certified grinder, wouldn't be surprised to see him grabbing a good SPL performance too.

Nalorium - Nalo did some convincing team tournament runs (6-2 GSCPL and 5-3 RoAPL coupled with a strong Classic run last year), and i'm very happy to see that he did a great progress in these last years. Good pick for teams who want a player that will likely deliver solid, no-nonense teams / plays.

Aliss - I don't know if Aliss is planning to play GSC, but she has a very authentic (kinda high ceiling / low floor cliché) style of playing the metagame... there were a fair amount of games in SPL XIV where she actually could nab some impressive upsets if bad luck wasn't on her side. Some of her GSC OU Last Chance games were pretty impressive, showcasing a very proactive and agressive style of playing the metagame.

Vileman - Did a good run last SPL, won a GSC Seasonal, got a solid Invitational run, and as it wasn't enough, he's clearly a passionate person looking for a chance to play a full SPL season - a lot of people suffer from burnout / exhaustion issues at the last weeks of SPL, and having a player like Vileman, hungry to grab good results week after week, should be a good choice IMO.

Honorable Mentions: Players that I can't say too many things because I haven't watched, or played enough games against them, but have done significant results this year and might have a potential in this (or future?) team tournaments: Onraider, Alice Kazumi, susciety, Thor, melancholy0, Egor, violet river

By the way, i'd like to encourage other known players to share their thoughts and recommendations about newer / ""reedemed"" older players. Nowadays it feels a little bit harder to make a name for yourself, compared to a few years ago... we can see a lot of grinders or hidden talents making a lot of strong runs in the Circuit, or in non-official team tours, yet it's far from being a guaranteed chance of getting drafted for SPL. Sometimes the clout / networking factor can discourage a lot of unproven players from joining the tournament scene, especially when it's not so easy to ignore the mentality of getting obsessed with the "sheet wins / results" in your profile, instead of simply enjoying the game in your own terms.

Alright, everyone is doing this for their tiers so it's time I do this for ADV.

Human chandelure - To be honest, I don't think I need to tell you about this guy's accomplishments at all. 2024 ADV has been Human chandelure's tier. With a 7th place finish in Global RoA Summer Losers' Invitational and a glowing 3-3 record in ADV LC AGPL, his results speak for themselves. His building is truly innovative, and makes you ask fundamental questions about the tier such as 'What if Chandelure was human'. I expect this guy to go for double figures, but as a rookie, some less educated managers still might not be familiar with this guy so it's worth mentioning him.

gymleaderellie - This player is a force of nature. She reached a record 1430 ELO in the ADV OU No Grumpig Ladder Tournament, and was appointed subsequently as one of Smogon's first Gym Leaders (she was just Ellie beforehand). Before her Smogon breakout tour, she was probably more known in other international Pokemon forums for her incredible 4-5 record in Serbian SPL. She's now poised to do the same in the non-Serbian version of the tour, so the discerning manager definitely ought to take a look.

God In A Tomato - This young 43 year old up and comer is full of talent and enthusiasm. While they may lack the tournament pedigree that others on this list have (they only managed to make finals of Smogon Masters, and had a disappointing semi-final exit in Smogon Classic), they are nonetheless talented. They have recently gathered attention among ADVers for their avant-garde 'Tomatar' set, a Tyranitar with Dragon Dance, Rock Slide, Earthquake, and Hidden Power Bug, which has seen some adoption among players trying to push the meta's boundaries. This fresh approach to building might make them more of a support/backup type pick who can sit in the team chat for a year, help a starter, and learn as they do it.

TorterraTheTerror - A steady competitor who has been around the ADV scene for years and participated in many smaller tournaments such as the ADV Monothreat Dragon Only Circuit Seasonal and the RoA Mix and Mega Pure Hackmons Shared Power Swiss. While not flashy in their play, this user is steady and dependable, just like Torterra itself. A good cheap pickup for managers looking to budget.

MANNAT - This guy is just absolutely desperate to start in ADV for you. Managers, get him now.

ADV players shoutouts:

Disclaimer: I am fuckin retired, stop coming in my discord DMs asking me to sign up, this tour is ass, my retirement will last till 2024

BluesEnergy00 -> Good player. 60% chance he shows up being at the same level or slighty above the pool, 20% chance he randomly trolls and brings Slaking, 20% chance you have to randomly sub him out, either way a 80% chance of having a fun time with him, hes a chaotic and cool chat presence and def deserves to be at least a sub

Endill -> Probably the best value pick of the entire tour when it comes to the ADV pool, not only its likely he goes cheap but he also has come with tremendous results the entire year, top6 in invite is nothing to scoff at and if u look beyond results, you will see he played most of the invite games extremely well to great amounts of precision, I reccomend this guy as possibly the best value starter of this entire SPL

charizardsnuts -> Great support, maybe can start but just for the support and great sub, he is worth it, nice results all around including a SSNL individual trophy, which talks about his skill, I have also seen him do well in a lot of teamtours and is generally very willing to help teammates but also very good at responding and taking criticism, incredible teammate to be with as I would know from my time in ROAPL

mielke -> same deal as Mayo (charizardsnuts) except hes genuinely a bit more overlooked, doesnt have that individual trophy to speak of, however make no mistake he is a threat, incredibely smart player whos also pretty good at taking criticism and at being a support, def reccomend as a sub who will clutch up games if your starter is gone/going on a bad streak, hes generally at the same skill level of Mayo and I recognize both as some of the greatest new ADVers the pool has to offer

Kollin7 -> great, great player who has been doing this for quite a bit, great skill level and honestly likely the most varied player bar Endill and maybe Mielke in this list, genuinely plays and tests with every archetype in the tier, extremely knowledgeable and great overall, has been doing exceptionally well in ladder for a while and silently doing well in tours as well, I def reccomend as a sub whos likely to be in the same deal as Mayo

Zpanther19 -> explosive recent result in Revival 2, top4 in such a excruciating and long tour is madly impressive, great player who has been constantly evolving the past few months, creating his own unique style and coming to be quite of a star of his own, to me I think he deserves his chance to prove that it wasnt just a "good tour fluke" and he is legit good as I believe him to be, genuinely very excited to see him play as he has shown up to have become silently great in these few months, also extremely nice as a individual and will be a good teammate

oliveroddish -> The ADV cup finalist. Great player, to be honest I haven't seen much else but he usually does solid and plays solid, in general a great pick and my interactions with him have been usually positive, I haven't teamed up with him but people who have usually say he is really really good as a teammate too and ofc his playing is great, after all he did went into a great run in ADV cup, def worth for a sub and managers should not be sleeping

AC7 -> Same deal as oliver, hes a very nice and enthusiastic guy who will be of great help, good player too and has won a individual too! I honestly think as advice for this guy, stop understimating yourself. You are genuinely good at the game, you just need to have some more confidence, anyway as long as you are able to fix that, I think this guy will do well in supporting and will be of good help to his team no matter what

ojr -> Honestly as overlooked as Mielke by the outsider community while also being incredibely underrated in the ADV spaces, a threat no doubt, some rage issues here and there and sometimes cooking too much for his own good, but generally very enthusiastic and does very well in most tours, will be a incredible and underrated 3-5k that will get as much value as some of the more expected new prospects, if not more, very great and worth it player

JabbaTheGriffin -> Don't know if this guy signed up but can we please stop letting him undrafted for practically no reason while also drafting worse players to start. Its genuinely stupid and idiotic, I know later I will say to stop relying on oldheads but give this old man a chance because if you actually looked upon recent years, you would know he actually did very well, either way its honestly stupid imo (it was especially stupid in CI6's year lol)

TLDR: This feels like a ton of glazing, I know and I am not the biggest fan of that, but honestly I just wanted to shoutout some new players who I think should have a place in SPL, except Endill, who I think should be looked upon more with his great year in 2024, im genuinely tired of these managers who have intelectual capability as similar of a leaf, except the leaf is probably genuinely smarter in 78% of the scenarios when it comes to knowing and understanding ADV talent, I also wanna say to the managers to not be afraid of subbing out some of the most "established ones" for these new players especially if the "established ones" are doing awfully, no need to be actively owning your team when theres a perfectly fine good player waiting in the wings, give a chance, I can guareentee that all of these I have shoutouted will not dissapoint you and will try to give their 100% no matter what in this tour. I just feel you guys need to stop drafting X oldhead from 2017-2018 and hope they go positive, theres a TON of players for ADV if you look right, arguably too much, so please managers, dont make dumb mistakes this time around when it comes to selecting ADV players. Peace out lol
