ORAS OU Silence in the Rain (Medicham + Rain)

Rain has always been an interesting format in XY / ORAS OU due to the weather nerf and pokemon in the tier that control weather like Hippowdon and Charizard Y. I have only played this team style once and I was somewhat effective with a standard team so after a while I went back and built a proper team after some inspiration of helping a new user with his team. Well without further ado I bring you,
Silence in the Rain.

So when building a rain team you get the standard Politoed any call it rain. But getting back into the format there is always a few problems like... How do I beat steel types without a fire-type? I'm pointing fingers at you scizor. Well with the rise of Mega Medicham and usually fitting onto HO teams I thought of giving it shot after seeing that Mega Swampert didn't do what I hoped it would accomplish. OHKO Mega Scizor after a some spikes support. As well as actually shooting someone in the heart anytime it hits something that isn't suppose to take an HJK.

186.png
308.png
141.png
230.png

After you have established your Politoed it becomes obvious that there will be some rain abusers so putting together the cliche Kabutops + Kingdra core was a brain dead task.

598.png

To get Mega-Medicham's job done I had stated that Spike support was needed as being able to take advantage of Fire be nerfed while inside rain meant ferrothorn had one less weakness providing an excellent pivot for the team.

Tornadus appreciates rain a lot due to being able to spam Hurricane while rain is active but is also just a generally fast mon with nice pivots for the team as well as being able to Knock Off and also U-turn with it's amazingly good Regenerator ability.

After realization that Flying types have a field day I decided to add Raikou to the team help out with the resistances and it also helps relieve a bunch of work off of one pokemon. Tornadus carried to much wait having to sponge to many hits, stay healthy, get necessary knock offs etc.

186.png
308.png
141.png
230.png
707.png
243.png

Klefki was replaced for Ferrothorn as Ferrothorn often lost momentum and Klefki did the same thing and more making it far more versatile than Ferrothorn and allowing the stress of not giving up to much by going into Ferrothorn. It also adds another bird resist.

The final product. Since Ferrothorn was replaced I didn't have any type of grass move on the team and that set me back a bit until I replaced Kingdra for Ludicolo. It gives me a reliable grass STAB as well as a somewhat better ground switch in.

Tornadus was recruited back onto the team after testing the Life Orb set recommended by BreloomMyHomie. It helps check grass types that Raikou didn't, helps removes items and is a reliable U-turner who also benefits from the rain.

Downpour (Politoed) (F) @ Damp Rock
Ability: Drizzle
Shiny: yes
EVs: 248 HP / 164 SpD / 96 Spe
Calm Nature
- Scald
- Toxic
- Encore
- Rest

The spread allows me to outspeed Jolly max speed Azumarill so if it is needed I can encore it after a Belly Drum. The rest goes into special defense allowing Politoed to fend off Mega Charizard Y, Gengar, and Alakazam easier. Toxic can help break down walls like Slowbro and Rotom Wash. Rest is to keep Politoes alive so it can at least switch in mid to late game and bring up the rain.
Tips:
If Politoed has at least put a Toxic on everything it needs to it can be a smart play to sacrifice it to a move that will kill so the next pokemon that comes in will have a maximum amount of rain turns to play around with.
Politoed should never be intentionally sacrificed if the opponent has any weather setter or if the opponent has a Charizard that hasn't mega evolved.

medicham-mega.gif
medichamite.png

無言の殺人者 (Medicham) (F) @ Medichamite
Ability: Pure Power
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Jolly Nature
- High Jump Kick
- Zen Headbutt
- Thunder Punch
- Fake Out / Ice Punch

This set is pretty standard with the exception of Ice Punch being switched with Thunder Punch to hit things such as Skarmory, Slowbro, Talonflame on a switch etc. This set reaches a max speed of 328. Unfortunately Medicham won't be able to OHKO Offensive Lando, Bulky Chomp, or Gliscor unless Fake Out was switched out for Ice Punch hence the slash to mark that it is an option.
Tips:
There is no drawbacks to Medicham mega evolving so any chance that is available make sure to take it.
Medicham was choosen specifically for Sczior so here all the calcs

252 Atk Pure Power Mega Medicham High Jump Kick vs. 252 HP / 0 Def Mega Scizor: 264-312 (76.7 - 90.6%) -- guaranteed 2HKO
252 Atk Pure Power Mega Medicham High Jump Kick vs. 252 HP / 0 Def Mega Scizor: 264-312 (76.7 - 90.6%) -- 25% chance to OHKO after 1 layer of Spikes
252 Atk Pure Power Mega Medicham High Jump Kick vs. 252 HP / 0 Def Mega Scizor: 264-312 (76.7 - 90.6%) -- 50% chance to OHKO after 2 layers of Spikes
252 Atk Pure Power Mega Medicham High Jump Kick vs. 252 HP / 0 Def Mega Scizor: 264-312 (76.7 - 90.6%) -- guaranteed OHKO after 3 layers of Spikes

kabutops.gif

They call me Tops (Kabutops) (M) @ Life Orb
Ability: Swift Swim
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 Def / 252 Spe
Adamant Nature
- Waterfall
- Stone Edge
- Swords Dance
- Aqua Jet

Kabutops forms the first part of my Swift Swim offensive core being able to sweep after Swords Dance. Kabutops carries 2 Ultra Powerful STABs as well as a priority move for clean up. Swords Dance should be used when there are no threats left like Venusaur that can wall it.
Tips:
Kabutops has decent defense stat so use that to your advantage when setting up. Kabutops also hates status so try to use Politoed as a sponge for Kabutops.
If a Mew ever switches into Kabutops it's safe to assume it is some jank scarf Drain Punch or TBolt or something out of the ordinary.
ludicolo-2.gif
lifeorb.png

Pianta (Ludicolo) (M) @ Life Orb
Ability: Swift Swim
EVs: 4 Def / 252 SpA / 252 Spe
Modest Nature
- Hydro Pump
- Giga Drain
- Ice Beam
- Focus Blast

Ludicolo forming the special attacker of the Swift Swim core provides the coverage that my team lack before and that was being able to hit bulky water types and it also gives my team a good Ground resistance as well as another Water Resistance that strangely this team lacks. Focus Blast and Ice Beam help Ludicolo fend off threats like Landorus-T and Garchomp and Focus Blast hits Bisharp and Lopunny.
Tips: Ludicolo supports Kabutops as if it was his other half. Use Ludicolo to help get the threats that hurt Kabutops sweep.
klefki.gif
rockyhelmet.png
/
shedshell.png

KKKeys (Klefki) (M) @ Rocky Helmet / Shed Shell
Ability: Prankster
EVs: 248 HP / 252 Def / 8 SpD
Calm Nature
- Spikes
- Thunder Wave
- Magnet Rise
- Foul Play

Klefki is the Spiker of the team as well as a somewhat decent Physical Wall. Since it is going to be sponging physical hits I decided Rocky Helmet would be a good idea allowing me break a potential on Excadrill or making Flare Blitz damage from Charizard X and Talonflame have a higher reward for me. Magnet Rise is also an interesting option but it keeps Excadrill and Charizard from using Earthquake which are moves that don't make contact thus not provoking the Rocky Helmet. Rain also helps Klefki substantially for getting damage out.

252+ Atk Talonflame Flare Blitz vs. 248 HP / 252 Def Klefki in Rain: 132-156 (41.6 - 49.2%) -- guaranteed 3HKO
+1 252- Atk Tough Claws Mega Charizard X Flare Blitz vs. 248 HP / 252 Def Klefki in Rain: 294-348 (92.7 - 109.7%) -- 56.3% chance to OHKO

Klefki can also run Shed Shell which helps with Gothitelle, Dugtrio, Magnezone and Magneton allowing spikes and to come in later and spread paralysis.

tornadus-therian.gif
lifeorb.png

Larry Bird (Tornadus-Therian) @ Life Orb
Ability: Regenerator
EVs: 76 Atk / 180 SpA / 252 Spe
Naive Nature
- Hurricane
- Superpower
- U-turn
- Knock Off
Tornadus was reccomended by BreloomMyHomie to replace Raikou. Tornadus adds a great offensive threat that appreciates rain due to the fact that Hurricane which is IMO is Tornadus's best move. It helps support rain teams a lot due to the fact that it can take out grass types which is the number 1 threat to rain based teams. Also being a reliable pivot who can smack pokemon like Heatran and Alakazam is great as well. It can use U-turn to gain momentum as well a take some hits due to Tornadus's amazingly present bulk.
Tips:
Tornadus can be a good sponge for the team as it is not a sweeper but a good attacker with U-turn plus regenerator. Tornadus's should never be intentinally sacrificed until all grass types are gone. If Tornadus gets weakened try finding moments to switch it in and switch back out.

Balance
641-s.png
-
Balance can be very easy to deal with especially with teams amazing offensive pressure. Spikes is very useful since Balance team tend to pivot and Voltturn a lot. Kabutops also has tendency to rip these teams apart after a Swords Dance.

Hyper Offense
445.png
-
Probably my most favorite of the match-ups since it is always a game of who can get the advantage first. Medicham usually takes advantage of anything slower than it and Ludicolo provides excellent pressure to threats like Thundurus and Garchomp. One major thing is too never let Politoed die unless you are going for game as having no rain against a team like Azumarill, Garchomp, M-Metagross and the likes of that.

Bulky Offense
212.png
- Mega Medicham absolutely destroys these builds.. Generally Balance is just HO but slower, easier, and with pokemon who don't even switch into Medicham..

Stall
576.png
-
This team handles stall particularity well until someone brings out sableye and start Calm Minding and all you can do is set-up with Kabutops and hope you hit it hard. And Gothitelle is just the worst nightmare to rain because if you get politoed trapped you pretty much lose rain and a rain team without rain is just bad. /me Smashes computer every time I see the same cliche Goth Stall. Goth is even more of a problem when I use Rocky Helmet over Shed Shell.

Semistall
003.png
-
Semi stall is a bit difficult to play especially if they Toxic Spikes up because the opponent can just go defensive if they need to. Basically wearing down the team easily. Raikou can be switched out for Thundurus making it a hell of a lot easier to deal with as long as Thundurus doesn't get badly poison.

Rain
186.png
- This matchup is entirely built on whose team beats who. My team can handle most common rain pokemon with Ludicolo. Ludicolo needs to watch out Kingdra who does outspeed it if they run 252 into Speed as well as taking a neutral hit from Giga Drain instead of a super effective.

Sun
038.png
-
Sun weather wars is actually kind of difficult depending on how much solar beam members there are. Other than that Kabutops actually comes in and gets a kill on anything bar Venusaur.

Sand
530.png
- Sand weather wars is much more difficult. Sand is much more diverse than Rain and it can cripple the teams special attackers when trying to hit steel types. Rain is super important in this match-up to maximize as much damage as possible.

25f6f5b7c0692391da94bd83691f30ad.png
625.png
Clicks knock off and my only switch in the Klefki who can get it's Rocky Helmet removed. SD Sets in particular are trouble some.
286.png
Bullet Seed is just a problem and mach punch threatens my Kabutops.
006.png
Charizard X isn't much of a problem but if it doesn't reveal it's mega it becomes substantially hard to play around and Charizard Y a problem in general specially since there is no Stealth Rock.

445.png
Sash + SD is a problem since it gets a lot of damage out and it takes two hits to kill as well as not being paralyzed by Klefki.
385.png
A revenge killer that actually is hard to handle for the team.
647.png
HP Electric variants are harder to deal with.
646-b.png
Scarf variants are harder to deal with.
310.png
Mega Manectric has a fun time with rain not up.
302.png
I hate this thing with a passion.
212.png
I also hate this thing with a passion.
642.png
It's annoying just because it can click Thunder Bolt and Thunder Wave.
701.png
fast and has the STABs for both of my Swift Swimmers

3b7a84f5e5ce7395bb15856de55623e1.png

The team itself acts very solid and obviously has it's weaknesses but there are a lot of minor tweaks that can be made (I'll have some options I have come up with down below) but i do have some shoutouts that need to be made.
ong1324 - When I was rating his RMT it hit me what I needed to finish my team.
teal6 & FlamingVictini - after seeing their teams it made me want to start making really good RMTs again.

Good T-Wave support and also a Nasty Plot sweeper. Could replace Raikou
642-s.png
Good scarf revenge killer or Nasty Plot sweeper that also adds an electric immunity
243.png
Switch the CM set to an AV set for better pivoting giving the team more momentum.
707.png
Thunder Wave can be replaced with Toxic to help deal with Toxic.
286.png

Good to replaced for Raikou as it add a pokemon that funtions well under rain being able to break sashes and has priority. This means Ludicolo could be replaced for Kingdra adding more power if wanted.

Hey man, not only do you have a pretty nice team, but including a section on how the team does vs every most playstyles is pretty cool. Furthermore, It's really nice to see Rain teams without Mega Scizor or Mega Swampert that are pretty effective. I remember using Mega Pinsir+Gothitelle rain offense in Gen 6 and it did pretty well. That's besides the point. While the team does look well built, it does have some flaws.

  • Breloom(My Homie) is probably the biggest threat to the team. Nothing appreciates a Bullet Seed or Mach Punch except Klefki, but that will be put to sleep and it doesn't have a Fairy STAB. And if Breloom SDs, you have to sack 2-3 pokemon before knocking it out. Mega Venusaur is also a problem too since Mega Medicham is your only check which doesn't appreciate a Giga Drain/Sludge Bomb to the face. For me, I would go back to LO Tornadus-T over Raikou. Raikou's only niche on Rain is Thunder, and adding this on your team just makes you more Mega Venusaur weak. You also mention that this is your switch in to Slowbro and Clefable, but to be honest, Slowbro's Rain Boosted Scald will do a decent chunk of damage+it has that chance to burn and Clefable, if Unaware, also beats your Raikou 1v1 with Wish Protect+Moonblast spam. LO Tornadus T would give you another Mega Venusaur and Breloom check, and can also 2HKO Unaware Clefable with Hurricane.
216 SpA Life Orb Tornadus-T Hurricane vs. 248 HP / 8 SpD Clefable: 220-259 (55.9 - 65.9%) -- guaranteed 2HKO after Leftovers recovery

0 SpA Slowbro Scald vs. 0 HP / 0 SpD Raikou in Rain: 130-154 (40.4 - 47.9%) -- 4.7% chance to 2HKO after Stealth Rock and Leftovers recovery

  • Next thing I suggest is Aqua Jet>Low Kick on Kabutops. You have Mega Medicham as well as Focus Blast Ludicolo to deal with Ferrothorn and Aqua Jet OHKOs Talonflame in the Rain.
  • Leftovers on Klefki would give you a pokemon to switch into Latis, but if you're in Rain, you do have 3 other checks to it so it's up to you.
Hope I helped! :]

Thanks man I am really glad to hear those suggestions.
  • LO Tornadus is putting in a lot more work than CM Raikou or AV Tornadus.
  • I put low kick on at first because it felt like second nature and then you made me realize that I have a Focus Blast Ludicolo and a Mega Medicham. it definately helps with TFlame and Heatran.
  • Leftovers actually is not that good sometimes. When testing it did save my skin but at times I wished I had my Shed Shell to avoid a Magnezone or could set-up Spikes and not have to worry about Gothitelle since some stall teams don't have defog skarmory. And Rocky Helmet + Magnet Rise is amazingly good allowing Klefki to force a physical move to come out like Char to use Flare Blitz in the rain or excadrill forcing to use Iron Head to deal damage. Also Rocky Helmet can punish spinners and wall Hippowdon as I set up spikes even if the Hippo carries Ice Fan it still helps a lot.

Hey,really nice team here i love it !!! there are no really problem maybe just oen or two but i'll try to fix them.

Bisharp is really annnoying for your team since your only 'switch-in' is Klefki which take neutral damage from iron head (which means X2 iron head can beat it) since Bisharp don't mind foul play too much,as you said it, Scarf Jirachi can be annoying if rain isn't up.Electric attacker are really really annoying since your only check is Klefki (Volt-Switch) and if rain isn't up you can't revenge kill him with one of your rain sweeper.

My solution will be to change M-Medicham for M-Swampert which will be able to take well Bisharp/Thundurus/M-Mane/Raikou/Jirachi.Its one of the best wallbreaker in rain (its a sweeper too) so it can be used over Medicham.

Thanks EdwardEric15, for the suggestion. It is true that my team does have a flaw to Electric types being half water with a flying type. Swampert is a great change for Medicham as it primarily loves being in the rain but there also some problems that come along with it to like a weakness to Grass types (bar Ice Punch) and it becomes really annoying. But I have played this standard rain team with pokemon like Mega Scizor and Mega Swampert and Mega Swampert is a viable switch. But I guess it comes down to personal preference like how I enjoy using Rocky Helmet and Shed Shell over Lefties on Klefki.

Tornadus-T is a full stop to any grass types in the game (only Breloom can spore him or using rock tomb on the switch but it can be revenge killed) and with regenerator and his natural bulk i don't think its a big deal,Klefki is really good in the team since it can be used as check to opposing Tornadus-T with Kabutops(in rain),leftovers allow you to have a better staying power and to have a better time with M-Diancie/M-Gardevoir and other special attacker,i don't think rocky helmet is really usefull since klefki will never come on a predicted U-turn from Landorus-T (for exemple) and anyway Garchomp/Landorus-T/Slowbro are the best users for this item since Landorus-T don't always need leftovers recovery to check some threats since intimidate is sometimes enough and Slowbro have acces to Regenerator.

Anyway great team !
