Teambuilding Process
Having watched some NDWC replays, and having read a post from Sulo on the Metagame Discussion about SD Gliscor, I really wanted to try it out.
I find Heatran pairs really well with Gliscor as Gliscor switches in to Ground and Fighting Type attacks for it and it switches in to Ice Type attacks and strong special attackers such as Lele and Valiant for Gliscor. Heatran can also trap and kill physical walls which Gliscor struggles with such as Ferrothorn, Skeledirge, and Buzzwole, and heavily dent others such as Corviknight, as well as just deleting Mega Scizor lacking CC, while Gliscor deals with opposing Heatran and Garganacl for it.
Zard-Y pairs well with this core as it does a good job of disrupting rain and can punch through cores built around Lando-T, Rotom-W, or Tusk, all of which are problems for Heatran and Gliscor, as well as Sun giving a power boost to Heatran's Magma Storm. Zard also appreciates Gliscor switching in to electric type attacks for it.
With 3 Pokémon weak to water (mitigated somewhat by Zard-Y's sun), I needed a solid water resist, and Rotom-W provides this, as well as being a solid defensive pivot able to cripple would-be threats such as Urshifu-R, Kingambit, and Zamazenta with WoW. It also really appreciates Heatran's ability to switch into strong special attackers.
I was unsure of what to do with the final 2 team slots, so I decided to use one of my favourite offensive combinations at the moment - Pult and Kingambit. These 2 pressure Garganacl a great deal, which is useful as the rest of the team can struggle to break Garg after Tera. (Heatran loses in a 1v1, I think.) Kingambit appreciates Heatran and Zard-Y dealing with Ferrothorn and Corv, while it breaks Skeledirge and switches in to Dragapult for Gliscor, Rotom, and Zard-Y. Specs Dragapult provides speed control, threatening Zamazenta and Tornadus, and it appreciates Heatran, Gliscor, and Kingambit removing Clodsire and, in Heatran's case, Booster Energy Valiant. In terms of what they do for each other, the only thing in the tier that can switch into both of them is opposing Kingambit, while Dragapult switches in to Fighting Type attacks for Kingambit, and Kingambit switches in on Ghost and Dragon Type attacks for Dragapult.
The team
Mega Charizard Y:
Charizard @ Charizardite Y
Ability: Drought
Shiny: Yes
Tera Type: Fire
EVs: 252 SpA / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Flamethrower
- Solar Beam
- Scorching Sands
- Roost
Zard-Y is a great Special wallbreaker with a terrifyingly powerful Flamethrower in sun, and anything that doesn't get melted by that doesn't enjoy taking a Solar Beam unless its name is Heatran, in which case Scorching Sands blows it off the face of the Earth unless it Teras. (Which is really annoying.)
I run Flamethrower over Fire Blast as the consistency + the greater PP really helps allows Zard-Y to consistently terrify bulkier teams and Fire Blast doesn't even have a chance of OHKOing defensive Lando-T on the lead. Solar Beam has a 35% chance to OHKO Tapu Fini and 2HKOes Garganacl, with a 70% chance to OHKO WashTom. Scorching Sands hits Heatran and Toxapex, while Roost provides longevity.
Gliscor:
Gliscor @ Toxic Orb
Ability: Poison Heal
Tera Type: Water
EVs: 244 HP / 252 SpD / 12 Spe
Careful Nature
- Swords Dance
- Earthquake
- Roost
- Facade
SD Gliscor is pretty good at the moment, acting as a great bulky setup sweeper and status absorber which matches up really well into everything but HO, and is one of the team's main wincons. Its power is hardly nuclear after an SD, but it can be quite scary:
+2 0 Atk Gliscor Earthquake vs. 252 HP / 156+ Def Garganacl: 266-314 (65.8 - 77.7%) -- guaranteed 2HKO after Leftovers recovery
+2 0 Atk Gliscor Earthquake vs. 252 HP / 4 Def Toxapex: 288-338 (94.7 - 111.1%) -- 62.5% chance to OHKO
+2 0 Atk Gliscor Facade (140 BP) vs. 252 HP / 4 Def Tornadus-Therian: 230-271 (63.5 - 74.8%) -- guaranteed 2HKO
+2 0 Atk Gliscor Earthquake vs. 252 HP / 0 Def Garchomp: 216-255 (51.4 - 60.7%) -- guaranteed 2HKO
It's pretty bulky as well, especially when bolstered by Poison Heal and Roost:
252 SpA Tapu Lele Moonblast vs. 244 HP / 252+ SpD Gliscor: 135-160 (38.1 - 45.1%) -- 53.5% chance to 3HKO after Poison Heal
252+ Atk Black Glasses Supreme Overlord 3 allies fainted Kingambit Knock Off vs. 244 HP / 0 Def Gliscor: 154-183 (43.5 - 51.6%) -- guaranteed 3HKO after Poison Heal
252 SpA Diancie-Mega Moonblast vs. 244 HP / 252+ SpD Gliscor: 159-187 (44.9 - 52.8%) -- guaranteed 3HKO after Poison Heal
252 SpA Tornadus-Therian Hurricane vs. 244 HP / 252+ SpD Gliscor: 139-165 (39.2 - 46.6%) -- 83.5% chance to 3HKO after Poison Heal
I'm still not 100% sure what the 12 Spe EVs do but every SD Gliscor seems to run them so they must be for something. I've started running 252 SpD though sometimes. I've chosen Tera Water over Tera Fairy as it turns Ice and Water into outright resistances and doesn't leave it weak to Kingambit's Iron Head or Mega Scizor's Bullet Punch.
Heatran:
Heatran @ Leftovers
Ability: Flash Fire
Tera Type: Grass
EVs: 252 HP / 196 SpD / 60 Spe
Calm Nature
- Magma Storm
- Earth Power
- Taunt
- Stealth Rock
Heatran has always been good, but it's really good right now, switching in reliably on the likes of Valiant, Lele, and Volcarona as well as being really threatening in a meta full of Steel Types, and being able to trap and remove things like Clodsire and Toxapex. Tera Grass allows Heatran to turn its matchups against Lando-T, Tusk, and Chomp on their head, with Flash Fire making it a hard counter to Zard-Y after Tera. The given EV spread allows it to outspeed uninvested Gholdengo, while the rest is geared for maximum special bulk, and Leftovers gives it longevity.
Magma Storm is required for it to trap stuff, and is boosted by Zard-Y's sun, Earth Power hits opposing Heatran, as well as hitting Pex and Mega Diancie. Taunt shuts down what it has trapped, stopping them from recovering or setting up, and also blocking Toxic after Tera. I've chosen Stealth Rock over Toxic as the team doesn't have a rocker otherwise, and when Heatran has trapped stuff, it won't need Toxic to kill them most of the time.
Heatran also creates great opportunities for Gliscor to come in and set up or for Zard-Y to come in and nuke something as it lures Ground Types.
Rotom-W:
Rotom-Wash @ Leftovers
Ability: Levitate
Tera Type: Ghost
EVs: 212 HP / 252 Def / 44 Spe
Bold Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Volt Switch
- Hydro Pump
- Will-O-Wisp
- Defog
Rotom-W is a great defensive pivot which is also the team's defogger. (Very important when running Charizard.) I've gone for 44 Spe EVs to outspeed max speed Kingambit, which is rare but can be a menace, so that it is guaranteed to get off WoW and cripple it, while the rest of the spread gives it maximum physical bulk, bolstered by Leftovers. Tera Ghost helps against Zamazenta (CB Tera Fighting CC has a 60% chance to OHKO otherwise) and allows Rotom to burn it, as well as allowing it to function as a spinblocker. I rarely Tera Rotom though.
Volt Switch lets Rotom function as a pivot which can lure Grass Types such as Rillaboom or Kartana and switch to Zard-Y or Heatran, Hydro Pump hits Ground Types, WoW let's it cripple threats such as Zamazenta and Kingambit, and Defog keeps Zard-Y healthy
Dragapult:
Dragapult @ Choice Specs
Ability: Infiltrator
Shiny: Yes
Tera Type: Fairy
EVs: 252 SpA / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
- Shadow Ball
- Draco Meteor
- U-turn
- Flamethrower
Specs Pult is another great special wallbreaker which can power through weakened teams and also acts as speed control. Infiltrator means that it can hit IronPress Zamazenta behind Substitute, which is important as IronPress Zamazenta is a threat otherwise. I've gone for Tera Fairy over Ghost or Dragon to resist Kingambit's Sucker Punch and be immune to offensive Garchomp's Scale Shot, as well as to get rid of the Fairy Weakness.
Shadow Ball and Draco Meteor are nuclear STAB moves, with U-turn stopping me from losing too much momentum and Flamethrower (boosted by Zard-Y's Sun) hitting Kingambit.
Kingambit:
Kingambit @ Black Glasses
Ability: Supreme Overlord
Tera Type: Flying
EVs: 116 HP / 252 Atk / 140 Spe
Adamant Nature
- Knock Off
- Iron Head
- Sucker Punch
- Swords Dance
Kingambit is a terrifying Physical breaker/late-game cleaner with Supreme Overlord and Black Glasses, serving as the second of this team's 2 main wincons. The EV spread outspeed uninvested Skeledirge, while the Tera Type allows Kingambit to escape being revenge killer by the likes of Iron Valiant, Lando-T, and Mega Lopunny.
Knock Off deals catastrophic damage when boosted by Black Glasses, Iron Head is another STAB option which hits Fairy Types and improves Kingambit's matchup against Garganacl, Sucker Punch makes up for Kingambit's poor speed tier, and Swords Dance boosts it all to ungodly levels.
Threats to the team
IronPress Zamazenta:
Zamazenta outspeeds everything but Dragapult and it can be quite hard to deal with if it gets a Substitute up, meaning that preserving Dragapult is crucial in this matchup. Gliscor can tank hits from it, but can't really hit back, and so doesn't really counter it.
Kingambit:
This thing is a nightmare. Gliscor can beat it but it loses if Kingambit Teras, Pult relies on Tera Fairy to beat it, and the Black Glasses set has a 40% to OHKO Zard-Y with 4 allies fainted. In this matchup, keeping Rotom-W and Heatran healthy is crucial.
Mega Diancie:
OHKOes or 2HKOes pretty much everything except Gliscor with Diamond Storm/Moonblast/Earth Power. Pult, Kingambit, and Heatran beat it with Tera, but the most important thing in this matchup is preserving Gliscor.
