[OVERVIEW]
Salamence is an immensely powerful wallbreaker and setup sweeper in the RU tier, with the bulk, coverage, and typing that lets it use common foes like Hippowdon and Volcanion as setup fodder. With access to both physical and special attacking sets, it can be quite difficult to switch into Salamence; physical walls like Galarian Weezing and Hippowdon fold to its powerful Hurricane, while special walls like Registeel struggle to tank its Earthquake after a Dragon Dance boost. Thanks to its Dragon / Flying typing in conjunction with Intimidate, Salamence can switch into a plethora of common foes, such as Entei, Slither Wing, and Barraskewda, which allows it to either set up with Dragon Dance or throw out powerful attacks like Draco Meteor and Hurricane. Roost is a reliable option for bulkier sets, allowing it to maintain health over the course of a game. Salamence does, however, struggle with the abundance of Ice-type coverage attacks in the tier, like Basculegion-F's Ice Beam, Mienshao's Triple Axel, and Mamoswine's Ice Shard. Salamence also relies on its Heavy-Duty Boots because of its weakness to Stealth Rock and competes with other great Dragon-types in Cyclizar, Hisuian Goodra, and Noivern, all of which offer some upside as utility Pokemon and wallbreakers.
[STRATEGY COMMENTS]
Other Options
====
Dragon Dance Salamence can use ChestoRest sets to great effect, setting up on unsuspecting foes like Galarian Weezing, after Salamence has Terastallized, and Slowbro without fear of getting burned. Flamethrower allows special attacking Salamence to melt Steel-types like Jirachi and Registeel without having to run Earthquake. Bulky sets with Breaking Swipe and Roar can be quite disruptive, using its bulk and typing to check many threats like Slither Wing and Volcanion comfortably while deterring setup attempts from foes like Armarouge; this bulky set fits on very bulky offense and stall teams.
Checks and Counters
====
**Physical Walls**: Galarian Weezing can wear Salamence down with Rocky Helmet chip damage while threatening to hit it hard with Strange Steam or burn it with Will-O-Wisp. Slowbro can take on Salamence comfortably, threatening to wear it down with Psychic Noise or burn it with Scald while recovering any damage taken with Slack Off. Hippowdon can generally annoy physical attacking Salamence sets, especially wearing it down with sand and Rocky Helmet chip if it isn't using Stone Edge or phazing it with Whirlwind.
**Faster Wallbreakers and Revenge Killers**: Choice Scarf users like Gardevoir and Galarian Zapdos are quite problematic for Salamence, with Galarian Zapdos especially annoying Intimidate Salamence with its Defiant-boosted attacks. Terrakion can use its bulk to withstand an attack from a boosted Salamence before threatening to KO it back, while other Choice Scarf users like Gengar and Hisuian Zoroark threaten to outpace a +1 Salamence and revenge kill it.
**Mamoswine**: Mamoswine is a notable Salamence check, threatening to OHKO it with Ice Shard while having the bulk to withstand any hit thrown its way. Without Terastallization, Salamence will struggle to deal with Mamoswine in any capacity.
