Rest, surprisingly reliable

First off, I haven't tested this out much in any other tiers so I couldn't say how well this system would perform outside of UU. As for UU, I have been using this idea for a long time now and can say its stunningly effective, arguably comparable to more conventional forms of recovery as well as far surpassing wish-passing.
Second, I credit TonyFlygon as the re-instegator of the idea this gen.
Third, maybe this isn't the best place for this to be posted? Most of the threads here seem to focus on specific Pokemon so idk.

Onto the topic

Rest is an often overlooked move apart from pokes with natural cure and the occasional restalker. *Those three turns of sleep, especially now in 5th gen, are too large a set-back to make rest worth while. Because of this, numerous excellent pokes, many of which managed to make OU for some time despite "having no access to reliable recovery", have found there way to UU. Imagine if they did. Well good news they do. Here's a few of the contestants.

Swampert
Bronzong
Blastoise
Hitmontop
Chandelure
Dusclops
Empoleon
Ferroseed
Registeel
Nidoqueen
Spiritomb
Snorlax
Suicune
Raikou
Escavalier

While rest on its own is pretty shit, it has been coupled w/ different, afore mentioned, moves and abilities to make it work. Well a while back TonyFlygon used rest with a healbell cleric to great affect. He received some praise for the idea on his RMT but the idea was never really picked up and used after that.

Well I've spent some time using the system for myself on a number of teams and pokes. I can tell you right now, the longevity added is ludicrous. To the point that pokes like swampert that basically had a ticking clock dictating that you could only use him so long till he inevitably died, no longer bear this burden. They can basically last as long as you play well, with an indefinite lifespan.

Now why not just use wish? Well wish forces you more quite simply, with smaller returns in the form of less HP recovered ( usually ) and doing nothing to help with status. And as I said, wish forces you to take more risks. You must switch out at least twice to perform a wish recovery, where as napping only requires one switch. Also, when using wish, you basically announce your intentions with the move far too soon. When wishing, your opponent can switch in freely on the turn you use wish, and keep pressure on you to prevent you from healing and eventually forcing a switch into something else or even killing your cleric. When using napping, not only do you not have to worry about finding a good time to switch in a weakened poke on what could be a fatal attack. But it's much harder to prevent the cleric from doing its job. With wishing they can wait until they see you switch your cleric in, with napping they have to switch in a counter at the same time you switch your cleric. This makes prediction much harder for your opponent.
The greatest drawback of napping vs wishing is that wish take up only one moveslot, where napping take one for the cleric plus one for each rest user. But the plethora of other advantages greatly out-way this insignificant disadvantage.

Why not just use recover, softboiled, roost, etc. well not all bulky pokes have 'em obviously. Although the extra HP recovered from napping vs these more conventional methods help bridge the ever shrinking gap between the practicality of the two.

Well where are we going to get a cleric that carries heal bell / aromatherapy? UU is full of great candidates.*

Togekiss
Shaymin
Meganium
The eeveeloutions
Altaria
Lanturn
Mew
Clefable
Lapras
Roserade
Liligant

This method has made all-out-stall not only viable, but insanely powerful in my experience. I would love to see this idea take root this time around, it certainly works well enough to deserve it.

I like to use rest myself in UU as there are some great rest-talkers in the tier, namely blastoise and milotic who are great assets to phazing teams with dragon tail. I even used a gimicky rest-talk set with flygon and dragon tail and earthquake which worked pretty well. But I think that's the reason not many clerics are seen as sleep talk is fairly popular (snorlax as well now I think of it) and the dominance of hazards in the tier mean that they can do their job well. Wish is tricky imo. Often your walls on low health won't be in fit enough shape to take a hit while they wait for the wish and they usually often have pretty big HP stats too so the over-all profit from gaining the wish, not including the turn lost in switching, is often pretty small. Chesto-rest is completely viable though as it means the opponent has to deal with your walls a second time and his sweepers will have a hard time switching in at that stage.

i often use a restalker milotic, i find it actually works well with teams that function off of rest+heal bell. thanks to the new sleep mechanics restalkers can be forced to go dangerously long between rests. usually getting forced awake every so often is pretty helpful. and by every so often i mean every 10-15 turns, sometimes up to 20. (i have some looong games using this system)

Ever since the good old days of RSE, I've loved Milotic. She is an excellent user of Resttalk, with marvel scale turning her into a mixed tank even. Cresselia is also very good with resttalk using psycho shift in tandem.

I am actually using Rest-talk milo right now, It's got such an amazing defensive presence, and only really fears powerful attackers like LO Zappy, Rose, and shaymin

Just to point that out that Tony Flygon is NOT the creator of Heal Bell + Rest. This strategy has been used for years, although uncommon.

Perhaps I worded it poorly, but it'd been a while since gen 2. I'd say his is the first team in a long while to grace an RMT that used the combo. Or maybe not IDK. It's where I first saw the idea anyway and that was my main reason for site him/his thread

And don't forget that Marvel Scale activates when Milotic is resttalking which made her one of the best mixed walls in the game, even in OU.

The only moves that she fears is STAB/boosted Thunder and Leafstorm. Anything else is 2hko or 3hko which is perfect for resttalking set.

I actually also use this set in ubers, and it works great!

Rest also synergizes well with Natural Cure, Shaymin and Roserade can use it on both offensive and support sets, healing damage taken during set up or from Life Orb recoil.

I wonder how resttalk machamp works this gen, he's not quite bulky enough to take the top hitters in uu, I wonder if there is some magic ev spread?
