I recently made my biggest impulse buy ever, an Xbox 360. So, uh, what are some good games for this thing? I already got Soul Calibur 4 (which was the main reason I got the system in the first place), and my friend is nice enough to lend me his copy of Grand Theft Auto 4. What other games for this system are good?

(Aside from fighting games; I already know all about that.)

Well, a fighting game that is quite different from SC is Virtua Fighter 5 online, but there are plenty of other great games for the 360.

For FPS, Halo 3, Call of Duty 4, Gears of War, and Rainbow Six: Vegas 2 are all solid games. CoD 5 and GoW 2 are both slated to be released soon, however. Shadowrun is also very interesting, but some may find 60$ (though you could definetely find it cheaper now) a bit pricy for a multiplayer-only game. The Orange Box is an incredible deal, as both Portal and the Half-Life games are outstanding and the Team Fortress 2 servers are actually somewhat populated.

RTS games abound on the 360, but sadly, none of them measure up to their PC counterparts. If you really want to play a console RTS, it would be best to wait for Halo Wars or EndWar so you can actually have a decent control scheme (the thing that all console RTS games suffer from).

As for RPGs, the recent Tales of Vesperia is a bit difficult to find but is a great game. Other older RPGs I've enjoyed include The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion (certainly not your standard JRPG but very fun nonetheless), Mass Effect, and Marvel: Ultimate Alliance (also not a standard RPG but the game is great even if you are not a comic book fan). I've also heard some good things about Lost Odyssey, but I've never played it myself. I would NOT recommend Two Worlds, as it is essentially a terrible version of Oblivion. Too Human has received a lot of mixed reviews and I didn't enjoy the demo too much myself, so I would suggest downloading that before buying the game.

As for Xbox Live Arcade games, I personally reccomend both Geometry Wars: Evolved and Geometry Wars: Evolved2. I have heard great things about the recently released Castle Crashers as well. I also enjoyed Assassin's Creed, but that is another one of those mixed review games.

The big strength of the 360 is its shooters and there is Gears of war, Bioshock, COD4, Halo 3, F.e.a.r, Tom clancy's Rainbow 6 and a few others.

I generally use my PC for multiplayer shooters. I have Call of Duty 4 and the Orange Box for that already. And Bioshock, which isn't multiplayer, but was available for $15 one weekend. That's an unbeatable price.

I also have Oblivion for the PC already...and I wouldn't recommend anyone ever get that line of games for anything but the PC, simply because its modding community is an incredible strength on top of an already amazing game, and you completely miss out on it when you put it on a console.

I'm quite a bit leery on Call of Duty: World at War. It's not developed by the same guys who developed Call of Duty 4, so I am not willing to give it the benefit of the doubt.

There has to be some good non-shooter games. Mass Effect is finally playable now for me because the console version isn't saddled with insane DRM, that's a plus!

Honestly I think I have too many games to play. I've had Morrowind sitting on my computer since I've got it and I haven't touched it because it's such a huge game and playing it is such a monumental task, lol. And then if I ever finish everything the default game has to offer, there's a ridiculous amount of downloadable content in the form of mods.

The Orange Box is probably the best purchase I made for the system, save for Halo 3.

You've got like 30 hours of Half Life 2 action, which is a very good single player game. By the time you get through the second half of Episode 2 you'll be so hooked on this game : O

Then you've got Portal, which is always a lot of fun. It's short, but very good. TF2 is apparently awesome as well. I suck pretty hard at it so I didn't get anywhere.

I mean, it has several good games and it only costs like 50 bucks.

Pretty much what tad said. Lost Odyssey is indeed great if you're a fan on Final Fantasy 10 and under. Crackdown is fun if you like GTA with some super-heroish type stuff thrown in there. Dead Rising is awesome if you're a fan of zombies.

Im playing Mass Effect atm. It is a very good game, and you should be able to get it pretty cheaply (£20 here). Forza Motorsport 2 is the best in the genre if you like that type of game, and I really enjoyed Assassin's Creed, despite it being a bit repetitive.

If you get nothing else for your 360, pre-order Fallout 3 (truly one of the greatest games on the planet), purchase TEVIV: Oblivion as tad suggested, and if you're a shooter fan, get Orange Box, the online multiplayer is pretty solid and not as glitchy as Steam seems to be for me.

As thunda suggested, Forza is a fantastic game as well and one of my favorite racing games ever. As close to as driving an Indy car you're going to be able to drive.

Halo is only good if you have zero taste in FPS.

This thread is a great social experiment to see who actually reads/skims the thread and who doesn't, heh.

*deletes all posts except the ones recommending Tales of Vesperia*
Hm. Gonna have to edit the ones that recommend multiple games too.

Get Tales of Vesperia. Yes you probably have too many games to play. However, get Tales of Vesperia. It's the first game since Bioshock and Metroid Prime 3: Corruption where I want to play for hours and hours at a time.

I don't see how you can call a game that hasn't even come out yet "truly great."

Personally I am looking forward to Left 4 Dead, Mirror's Edge, and Fallout 3. All 3 are coming out pretty soon and I have high hopes for them. Though of course they could all turn out terrible so I'm going to reserve judgment on them.

While buying a recent game is great and all, if you are on a budget, early 360 and original Xbox games are great choices. Many solid 360 titles like Lost Planet, Dead Rising, and Hitman: Blood Money can be found in the $15-$25 range. Original Xbox games are even cheaper and the ones that are BC are often pretty good, though some of the better titles sadly aren't BC. Fable, Knights of the Old Republic, and Psychonauts can be found for $5-$15 usually used though.

The Xbox and 360 have a surprisingly large library of varied titles if you look beyond its shooter exterior.

How come dude? I mean, I keep hearing this all over the place, but never really got an answer on why it sucks before. Funny enough when I bought my 360, I bought Halo 3 soon after because I heard it was a staple 360 game and almost everyone with the system plays it on LIVE. I get the system, exchange tags with a few friends and co-workers only to find barely anyone in my circle played it yet everyone has and plays CoD4.

But anyway, a game I'd vouch for is Star Wars: The Force Unleashed. It comes out on Tuesday but thanks to a few dudes who broke street date I got a copy. It's not perfect by any means, but it's a fun game, double if you're a Star Wars fan. Picking people up with your mind, throwing a lightsaber through their chest, then throwing them like, 50 stories in the air, then walking away and catching your saber flying back into your hands without looking is awesome no matter how many times you see it.

Army of Two - Awesome game with a friend. Without a friend, it's still a decent romp. Unique to say the least. Far as multiplayer, not even worth mentioning. A shooter you'd get for the campaign solely.

Tenchu Z - If you're not familiar with the series, it's an aquired taste. Basically get from point A to point B as quietly and sneaky as possible. The selling point for this game is what you can do to your enemies when they don't know you're there. Far as it goes on LIVE, basically you group ninja to the spot. No competition, always co-op, but it's fun for an hour or two.

Halo 3 - It's Halo 3. Before this I didn't play any FPS since Golden Eye and Perfect Dark so I dunno what the standard is these days, but I found this game fun. The campaign was.. decent. But the multiplayer is pretty fun, especially when you run into the poor sports that trash talk all day.

Ninja Gaiden II - A beat-em-up for the new era. Basically you run around maiming your enemies in ultra violence for the whole game. And then between these levels, you get to see Ryu do crazily awesome stuff in cutscenes. Story is lame but it's about a ninja tearing stuff up. Always awesome. Only con I can say is the game is hard. I mean, hard to the point where it's a flaw.

Assassin's Creed - I dunno. It's not a bad game, but I don't think it's worth the price tag it still goes for. Basically you stealth around killing people and unlike Tenchu where you simply hide on a roof or in a tree to get away, you're in a massive town so you can sneak within the crowd, hide as a citizen on a bench, pose as a praying monk, etc. A decent rental atleast.

Star Wars: TFU - ^

But back to moot, that wasn't rhetorical, how come no one likes Halo? ;x

Releases that I'm looking forward to are Star Wars The Force Unleashed and Fable II, as well as Gears of War II, and if you're into RPGs, Fable can be bought for 10$ on Xbox Live. Halo 3 of course is a standard. Bioshock is one of the greatest single-player shooters of all time, a must have. Guitar Hero can also be a good party game, although two controllers is probably expected, putting you back even further. Braid on Xbox Live for 15$ is a fantastic puzzle/platformer. You can also get original Doom if you want on live.

Whats up with the Halo 3 hate? I've played plenty of other FPS and I keep on crawling back to Halo. It's balanced, it has good graphics, and it's fun.

Also, the maps are awesome, and Bungie keeps making more!

Also take advantage of the free demos on the XBL Marketplace, theres almost 200 demos up there and you can usually judge if you will enjoy a game from the demo and take your own word instead of blindly following someone else's.

People love to hate what's popular. Makes them think they're unique when in reality they're only conforming to yet another group. It's pathetic.

Get Halo 3 if you wanna join in on some co-op campaign fun with any friends who are also picking up a 360 during this period. The co-op campaign is a ton of fun. The amount of friends I have with a 360 basically doubled over the last two weeks due to the price drop. $199.99 20GB 360 in Canada is a steal.

Clarifying: the previous two were simply fantastic, and Bethseda is amazing at making games, plus I played the demo at PAX which was sexy as fuck, so...

Try out Rock Band at somebody elses place and use that as a basis if you want to buy it.

The cool thing is that once the full pack comes out for RB2 you can buy it, rent/borrow RB1 and import all the songs.

Man, I did not know a 360 was so Cheap in Canada. I shall trade in my regular Xbox immediately!

btw, is Xbox live any good, and how does it even work?

Xbox Live is very much worth it. It allows you to hook up your Xbox over the internet and play with people in a party over WiFi so you can play with people (up to 16) even if none of your friends are available (and without flooding your house to play 16 people).

I don't think I'll be purchasing Xbox live. Online fighting games are ass and what else am I going to use it for, shooters? When it comes to online I play those on the PC with its (imo) infinitely better control scheme.

What does that leave? Dr Mario RX? That's not even for the 360, heh.
