Pokemon Pronunciations

I don't really know how English began stressing Pokemon on the first syllable, but if I had to guess, when we get a made up word we don't know, by analogy we will subconsciously give it a stress pattern. If the word doesn't easily fit into a common pattern then we sort it into the most common stress pattern for three syllable words in English, which is to have the stress on the first syllable.
Something to note is that the anime dub seems to pronounce it as /ˈpoʊkeɪˌmɑn/ (poh-KAY-mon/pok-KAY-mahn) whereas in the English* version of Roxie’s gym music the stress is put onto the first syllable.

Funny how much of a difference the localisation team makes.

*for anyone interested, the Japanese version spells out “Dogars” (Koffing’s Japanese name) instead of “Pokémon”

It was never Ray-kwah-za.

Ray-quay-za folks!

This is just about the most mispronounced Pokemon of them all aside from Arceus.

Arceus has two pronunciations. Ar-key-us and Ar-kay-us!
You know, I could buy that if only there wasn't an association with pokemon saying their names. I always thought Ray's cry was close enough to the unofficial pronunciation of their name (while still being a roar with GBA sound-compression) that it was to be interpreted as such. With the gen 6 cry update fully bringing mons saying their names into the core games, I don't see Ray-kwah-za going anywhere.

As for Arceus, I do agree having a hard c is better. It keeps it close to Latin for "ancient," which I think is fitting enough.

:arceus: Ar-koos.
:yveltal: Yah-vul-tal
:regice: rej-ice (i do not care how the anime pronounces it)
:zacian-crowned: za-she-in
:eternatus: I used to really butcher this one and say eater-nay-shus
:gyarados: another one i used to butcher. i used to say gy-ray-a-dos iirc.
:raikou: rye-koo

If the way the anime pronounces a pokemon's name is that stupid then we should just ignore the anime

Like if apple pulls up and says "iPhone is pronounced 'eye-pee-who-knee'" then I really don't care what apple says, I'm not gonna pronounce it that way.

Same with ferrothorn. Most people would recognize 'ferro' from the chemistry prefix, and on top of that I've never heard anyone pronounce 'ferrothorn' like in that god awful anime clip

also how do i write all that in the IPA way? I genuinely tried but I can't find the 'eye' noise on their chart

If you need a keyboard this site https://ipa.typeit.org/

Also if you want to know what the ipa is for any given English word this site is useful https://tophonetics.com/

Otherwise yeah, as martin said, "eye" is two different vowels combined into one. A diphthong.
