I've posted this before but apparently no one considered my point. Anyway, here it is again:

I remember i read somewhere (and actually believe that it might be true) that the D/P games might be able to be updated in order to have the new forms/pokemon and anything else for that matter.

The reason i believe this might be true? Because we've had this happen before. Remember the berry glitch from advance that could be fixed by connecting your game to the game cube? Imo i's possible that this will happen again. After connecting your D/P game to any platinum game, new data would be transferred to it, thus making it possible to have all the new forms. If i'm missing something here, please point it out.

I thought that r/s/e were fixed, by linking to LG...

But I'm 90% sure that D/P has a way to patch its program. Considering they would do it in ADV, and now where there is more memory, and better technology, to not put a patch program would be stupid of GF. I'm sure it will be a similar thing. Hopefully we can patch PBR...

The Berry Glitch patch was used to fix a glitch and repair its damages to the save file. No new data was added as a result of its use. The early Japanese Diamond/Pearl versions had a similar patch for fixing the glitch that made it possible to catch Darkrai and Shaymin (but also to get stuck without any means of escaping).

There has never been a case of a patch used to modify anything but the save file and the simplest lines of coding. It would be more feasible for Platinum to send Diamond and Pearl temporary data for the duration of a single battle. The precedent for that sort of modification is not found in previous Pokémon titles so much as it is a stable feature of the DS (most notably seen in Download Play mode).

But I wouldn't bet on that coming to fruition. The footage we have of the game and the information pertaining to the upcoming Japanese tournament are signs showing that interaction between different Platinum games is much more focal in the Pokémon Company's eyes. As long as unofficial battles without new forms or Pokémon can be conducted between Platinum and Diamond/Pearl, little else seems to matter.

A version with new forms and new Pokémon would be better.

The difference between new forms and new Pokémon is the difference between angry players and players that feel compelled to buy Platinum. If Platinum merely provides "tools" for toggling between forms (Shaymin's tool has already been demonstrated) there's no need to issue any patches for Pokémon Diamond, Pokémon Pearl, Pokémon Battle Revolution, or My Pokémon Ranch. The Platinum player simply sets Pokémon to their original forms when interacting with the other games. Players without Platinum miss out on an aspect of a Pokémon without being denied that Pokémon altogether.

It's true that Game Freak could issue patches. I think they already patched D/P in Japan as a result of the Elite Four Glitch. Re-downloading Ranch wouldn't be a big problem for anybody if it came to that. Game Freak's primary goal, however, is to sell Platinum. If they can implement a solution within Platinum itself they don't have to worry about the other software. Providing Platinum with special forms and the ability to switch to old forms in order to deal with the previous games is the easy way out. It's the implementation every developer would prefer.

All we know so far is that Shaymin switches forms very easily and that events this fall will provide additional "tools." Nintendo may take the high road and patch everything but they can certainly get away with not doing so. As I said previously, it'll be interesting to see their solution.

Why? If the silhouettes were new Pokémon that were not legendary, but simply fell under the event category, their items could be distributed at any given time.

If they are new Pokemon, that makes this manner of revealing, and distribution to the players even more odd.

Non-legendary Event Pokemon are not normally distributed by wifi. They are normally available in-game. Legendary event Pokemon however, are pretty much always distributed as promotional tie-ins to movies, celebrations, and other various occasions that the player must attend.

These items to access the silhouettes are seeming being distributed by wifi, with seemingly no requirements to attend any event. This gives a strong impression that whatever the silhouettes are, they are not considered special enough to say, hold off on giving players access to them, and give the items away at a movie, or event, on-site. Whats more, the 5 items are redistributable up to 5 times by the player who originally gets the download, this means every single instance of a download, 6 players actually wind up with the item, and access to the silhouettes. Which means that after this single giveaway, the silhouettes will be quite wide spread, and way more accessible to players, than say, Darkrai or Moviegigas.

If these Pokemon are brand spanking new Pokemon, it is awfully weird that they appear on the scene with no fanfare (because all the hype they are getting so far, is as a part of the whole of Platinum's unrevealed features) or anime showcase at all, especially with movie 11 having just been released, and there being a movie 12 next year where they could be showcased and revealed to ignite interest in Platinum, alongside any other projects that may be in the works at that time.

On the one hand you're saying that any non-legendary Pokémon should be available in-game, but on the other hand, you admit that a Wi-Fi distribution will make the Pokémon broadly available and render them considerably less unique than the legendaries. How does that work? And how do the alternate forms factor into this? What would make them any more apt to undergo such special treatment?

I think that the strongest argument lies in the upcoming tournament. The fact that the list of ineligible Pokémon will only be published when the game is released strongly implies that the five silhouettes are included, which is to say unusable in the tournament. Would that make sense if they were on par with an existing Pokémon, such as Rotom, that is not ban-worthy?

I find it to be brilliant marketing, actually. The anime showcases pertain to cases where a new generation is advertised and brought to fans' attention long before its debut. Third games do not meet that requirement.

It seems to me that the silhouettes are being made out to be more important than Origin Forme and Sky Forme. Granted, we may not know what they are now, but their mystique only serves to draw players to the stores come the game's release day. They have made a point of including booklets in the game box that will explain the Pokémon's nature; that is an incredible incentive. Not only that, but there will be more than two weeks between the game's release and the beginning of the distribution event, which is more than enough time for players who were not going to buy the game initially, to change their mind in the event of finding out that new Pokémon are included.

Don't you guys think the silhouettes look similar to Rotom?
There might be a branched evolution or something, which explains why Rotom has "legendary music" when you encounter it in-game.

Alternatively, they could be other Levitating part-ghost types. I can see Fire/Ghost, Grass/Ghost... Just a suggestion.

It'd be really interesting to see the CAP pokemon patched into d/p/p, of course only people with R4s could have them but yea...

It's actually an "One-Off pokémon" music. If we had Sudowoodo in the Battle Frontier, it probably would have the music too.

Actually, I think it does have the music not only because of its "one-offiness", but to match the Old Chateau. I mean, you find a TV in a haunted house at midnight and you see a pokémon inside it. Your average pokémon battle music wouldn't mix very well.

Does anyone think that the Sinnoh Dex will change in Platinum because of Giratina?

They don't necessarily have to change the sinnoh dex. In emerald, we saw rayquaza, we actually talked to it. But since it was unobtainable until after the E4, the dex wasn't hurt in anyway. I'm sure something similar will happen again.

Rayquaza was in the Hoenn dex, and you could catch it before the elite four.

Probably yes. Plus Electivire/Magmortar might be in it as well. This way Flint'd have "more than 2 fire types".

It was proven that the battle with volkner/flint was not related to the vire/mortar seen right after it.

EDIT: ap13095, I thought all we did was talk to it as it saved kyogre/groudons mindless fighting? Well in Hoenn you didn't need to know all the pokemon, in order to get national dex either, just beat the E4.

Instead of just debating who is/isn't in the Sinnoh Dex, I decided to make my own version.

This is my version of the Platinum Sinnoh Dex. Under each Pokémon I have put the location at which they can be found.

Though wouldn't sudowoodo have "one-off" music in emerald? Its been a long time since i've played emerald, but I don't remember a "one-off" music in there.

I always thought rotom was just an event pokemon. Not a legendary, but an event.

P.S. Would people want me to upload most if not all the recent videos on the yahoo kids site?

That's because, at that time, you only had four types of legends; the 600+ Ubers (Rayquaza, Kyogre, Groudon), the Regis, the Lati Brothers and the Event-only pokémon (Jirachi, Deoxys). The first group have an exclusive music, so does the second group and Deoxys on the fourth. So, the only one-off pokémon left are Lati@s and Sudowoodo. It'd be pretty strange if a fake tree had the same music of those... dragons.

It's different in D/P; you have the Lake Trio, the Dragon Duo, the event-only guys, the God, and... the others. It's pretty much that, "the others". They don't have much of a theme putting them all together besides the one-off thingy. So, they threw Rotom in the mix and called it done.

They don't necessarily have to change the sinnoh dex. In emerald, we saw rayquaza, we actually talked to it. But since it was unobtainable until after the E4, the dex wasn't hurt in anyway. I'm sure something similar will happen again.

Huh? You could catch Rayquaza BEFORE the E4, at level 70 and everything. You could even catch it with the Master Ball.

In regard to expanding the Sinnoh Pokédex, I would expect that if it were done, the number would go up to 202. That is the number of Pokémon in the Hoenn Dex; it was no coincidence that the number 151, which is that of the Kanto Pokédex, was also used for Diamond and Pearl. As an interesting bit of trivia, the number of Pokémon available in Gold, Silver and Crystal prior to the Elite Four was 202 (including the event Celebi), even though the "New Dex" included all 251 Pokémon (in a different order than that of the "Old Dex", which is the National Pokédex). This further shows that the Pokédex numbers are not decided at random; Ruby and Sapphire borrowed the 202 number and integrated it into an actual regional Pokédex.

I don't think that the Sinnoh Pokédex will change, but it is interesting enough to point out that if Game Freak were to add the 17 missing new evolutions and their familiy members, as well as Rotom and Giratina, the Sinnoh Pokédex count would go from 151 to 202.

As for why I don't the above is meant to be, my reasoning is that Game Freak incorporated a less expansive regional Pokédex in Diamond and Pearl for the purpose of letting all the non-legendary Pokémon be used by the in-game trainers. That would not work with a greater number, particularly with a high concentration of evolutions that only a handful of the in-game trainers are "equipped" to use. Not only that, but the players themselves need to go through a relatively hard time to acquire these evolutions, which is time better spent after the main storyline is finished rather than before.

Game Freak were most likely aware that some players might want to use the evolutions early on despite the difficulty, which is in all likelyhood the reason they made it possible to receive them via trading even if the National Pokédex has not been obtained. It was altogether a sound decision. Now that it has been two years since the games were released, the Sinnoh Pokédex is as familiar to us as the Kanto Pokédex and Hoenn Dex were in 2004, of which neither was altered for the second incarnation of the respective region (FireRed/LeafGreen; Emerald).

Giratina could rather easily be captured without consequently triggering new Pokédex data. From the story's perspective, Professor Rowan could explain that he has yet to conduct prepare research on the Pokémon and now that he has seen it first-hand, he can start working on upgrading the Pokédex with Professor Oak's help. As for Porygon, we do not have confirmation at this time that it is really obtained prior to acquiring the National Pokédex; it could be given to the player in Veilstone City in the same way that Eevee is given in Hearthome City (that is, after the main storyline).

This game hasn't gotten a date confirmation for the US right? It's in a few weeks for Japan, right? Or did I miss out on something?

English hasn't gotten a confirmed date, and we probably won't until about december/january. But this is my estimate, not an confirmed date at which the english platinum's release date will be confirmed.

Japanese get it on Saturday september 13th. So it is about 2-3 weeks away.

Pokémon Diamond and Pearl were released on September 28th in Japan, and April 22nd in North America. Since Platinum is being released September 13th in Japan, I think it is a reasonable estimate to say North America will likely see it early April.

As jujuomi said though, we don't have a confirmed date.

Actually GF can take 1 of 2 options.

1. Since most of it had been in d/p (at least pokemon data), it will be faster to translate, and could come out before april (which I doubt).

or

2. They can raise prices by building our anticipation, and setting the date off to may for people to be so exited to go for it.

Personally I think they'd take choice 2 >.>

Im loving the new sprites. (especially croagunk and infernapes)

I love the new additions, especially the reworked battle area.

I heard the battle shop might be giving moves like the emerald move tutor, if this is true, it can prove to have a dire effect on competitive battling. Just a rumor, but im actually hoping it happens.

I have seen somewhere the US release would be in January 2nd.

By the way, go to Pokébeach, people. It seems that Takumi Akabane, the "creative director" of the video games, has already (kind of) revealed the silhouettes are new forms.

Not really. It seems that he hardly understood the question and what was meant by "new forms" due to the language barrier. When he said ""Ohhhh! Yes. New forms.", it was because he had just understood what the word meant in regard to Origin Forme and Sky Forme, but he then proceeded to say "Hmm... I'm not sure." in response to the question involving the silhouettes.

Junichi Masuda, whose English seems to be better, flat out refused to say anything on the subject.

I am a little perplexed as to why WPM even bothered to post this. Both of them were mainly freaked out by the fact that an American fan knew about the silhouettes. I would also wager that they are not used to being stalked.
