Pokemon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl - Release 19th Nov 2021

Question: What does the "November 11th" release date of the day 1 patch even mean? Why isn't it just November 19th? Surely Nintendo isn't distributing the patch early to holders of leaked copies. (Basically, does the release date actually mean anything or could they have said November 19th instead and nothing would change?)

The only guess I have is that the digital preload is confirmed to include the patch, but that would be November 12th (today), not 11th. It doesn't seem to be time zone-related shenanigans either.

I have a feeling the datamine thread might have an answer but I don't want to go there and be spoiled.
My best guess is releasing it “early” for the review copies. Wouldn’t want the reviewers to be playing an incomplete game.

Had the female playable character ever had a risque outfit?

True, but also note that in this art style it would be hard to show off any skimpier clothes. Sure they have the battle models but most of the time we're looking at the chibi overworld model.

  • Kris & May: The first playable gals I feel are alright. Sure, May has this strange combination of tight pants & mini-skirt, but I wouldn't really say its skimpy. I do sort of get the feeling of "sporty" from them.
  • Dawn: Yeah, as everyone said, Dawn's short skirt is kind of uncomfortable if you focus on it as you're easily one small bend away from getting a panty shot. I remember a rather infamous picture years ago where Ash & Dawn were holding onto a Mantine and you just get to see Dawn's underwear; curious is the dub cut that scene out. I also remember there was this educational game made for younger kids on the PC and they drew over Dawn's legs to make it look like she was wearing black leggings, which I don't know why it's not like the anime did that and I'm assuming the kids playing the game would also see the anime. And it is particularly baffling how Platinum's Sinnoh is said to be much colder... and they don't even give her shorts, like what?
  • Lyra: Lyra is certainly a special design. I don't think I've ever seen zettai ryouiki done with overalls before. She looks like she's a farm girl who was getting ready to go on her Pokemon adventure, saw what all the other girls was wearing, and decided to replicate it the best she could with the farm clothes she had. And she's certainly no fashion designer. Still, I wouldn't say its as bad as Dawns as the overalls do provide modesty for the private area.
  • Hilda: A sort of "eh" situation. Yeah, her pants are as short as Dawn's skirt, but they're still pants so not like we'll see accidental panty shots at least. Though Aduro is right that her pockets are longer than her pants, I'm never gonna unsee that now; for that I'll give it a questionable design choice because I don't know anyone who would wear their pants THAT short.
  • Rosa: And going the complete opposite direction, sorta, Rosa has no legs exposed and instead wears black legging pants. The only questionable thing here is who thought that yellow tutu was a good idea.
  • Serena: Now if you want a classic example of zettai ryouiki than here's your girl. And on top of that her skirt is also as short as Dawn's. Them French girls... though usually when they say that they're talking about young woman.
  • Selene: Back to short shorts, which makes sense for someplace as tropical as Alola.
  • Elaine: "Who?". You know, the girl character from Let's Go. She's wearing short shorts so *shrug*.
  • Gloria: She would be more covered up if she was wearing a kilt, but she had the short skirt and a hop into a Flying Taxi ride away from a panty shot.

I will agree that the girls should be given longer pants and especially skirts (or wearing shorts underneath), but only a few I see as problematic if we talk practicality.

And knees, either the pants ends just below them (Ethan, ORAS Brendan, SM Elio, Chase) or they're wearing these non-underwear underpants that covers them (Emerald Brendan, Nate, USUM Elio). Feels more like:

Girls: I'M EXPRESSING I HAVE NO SHAME WITH MY BODY IMAGE!

Boys: That's cool. Say, have you seen this neat non-underwear underpants? They're comfy and easy to wear... they also keep my thighs warm...

Ah yes, sweet innocent Lana.

She just wants to make sure the swimmer is alright... she's ready to give them mouth-to-mouth... even if they don't need it...

The best Dawn short skirt laugh beyond the panty shot (which Pokemopolis completely and hilariously roasted in their episode review) was the scene where Dawn's mother sends the gang snow gear. There is a group shot of Dawn proudly modeling her stylish coat with her short skirt. Frostbite in Snowpoint.

I suppose the fact that her pajamas were long pants and that her contest skirt was longer than her regular skirt was pretty amusing too. Ah, Pokemon anime fanservice. It is a Confuse Ray of craziness.

Do you think this game will get the lets go treatment, i.e. pushed aside for the main generation (USUM)
Officially speaking, SWSH will be the official format for all ranked battles. THis was confirmed in the last Pokemon Presents trailer.

As for Smogon, I dunno...I'm not sure if the prospect of trying to balance 2 completely separate metas all the way down to NU (would there even *be* a BDSP PU?) at the same time.

I can definitely see a BDSP OU Other-meta being a thing at one point or another. I think it could be fun. I mean they did do a Lets Go Pikachu and Eevee OU, so anything is possible.

Without Hidden Power Ice (which is very likely since it's no longer a TM and is exclusive to Unown in BDSP) and no competition from Lando-T, Gliscor would probably become the face of the tier. I think Mons like Infernape and Empoleon which were forced out due to powercreep could make an appearance in BDSP OU.

There are many other changes in the game that also make BDSP a whole different beast from gen 4. Grass types are all immune to powder moves and Spore, so Breloom gets hard countered by Roserade, for example. Pursuit is still MIA so Tyranitar loses a big chunk of its lead power. Fairies exist now, Ferrothorn doesnt, and too many more to list. would be fun to experiment with for sure.

Moderately obscure question: In the original Diamond and Pearl, what's the difference between battling in the Union Room and battling in the Communication Club Colosseum? (They're the two separate desks on the second floor of a Pokemon Center.)

Mostly asking because of this odd wording difference between the US and UK patch notes:

US patch notes said:
https://www.nintendo.com/whatsnew/d...ond-and-pokemon-shining-pearl-feature-update/

On the day of the release, interactions using local and internet communication in the Union Room will be limited to two players. However, future updates are planned to increase the maximum number of players, as well as add greeting and Capsule Decoration functions. Additionally, future updates will enable Link Trades at the Global Wonder Station (GWS) facility in Jubilife City, as well as Link Battles via the Colosseum function in Pokémon Centers.

UK patch notes said:

On the release date for the software, up to two players will be able to interact in local and online play in the Union Room, and you will be able to select the “Battle”, “Trade” and “Mix Records” functions. In an update that will be made available after the software releases, the maximum number of players will be increased, and the “Greeting” and “Capsule Decoration” functions will become available.
Additionally, trading using the GWS in Jubilife City and the use of the Colosseum feature inside Pokémon Centers will also be added in a post-release update.
I originally misread the US patch notes as "Link Battles will be enabled in a future update (won't be available at launch)". However, the UK patch notes clarify that battles in the Union Room will be available day 1 while only the Colosseum won't be available day 1.

Related question: There's also this bit from the patch notes:

Communication functions added for the Grand Underground, Super Contest Shows, Union Room, and Mystery Gift

You’ll be able to enjoy local and internet communication functions of game features like the Grand Underground, Super Contest Shows, and the Union Room. You’ll also be able to receive gifts via Mystery Gift.
Since it specifies "local and internet", this implies that without the patch, the whole Union Room isn't accessible. However, this can't be literally true because the one of the first leaks included showing off local trading.

So how much local communication was actually accessible prior to the first patch? Local trades? Local battles? Local Underground connections? Local contests?

Has Pursuit been confirmed to return? Ghosts have had it far too good for far too long.
The only returning moves of the ones removed in SwSh are ones that are signature moves of Pokémon not in SwSh that return in BDSP (Deoxys' Psycho Boost, Ariados' Toxic Thread etc). This even includes Hidden Power as that is now the signature move of Unown, and nothing else gets it

small thing but hidden power coming back but only for unown is the best outcome IMO. Idk who thought giving every pokemon the ability to beat down checks was a good idea
When the move was introduced it was probably just as "what if we had a move that varied a bunch based on a pokemon's unique values?" so you get this wacky move and you give it to a Pokemon and it's like wow cool mine's a dark type move...oh no, it's super weak lol!

This garbage is why I made Hidden Power's type based on the "unused" value in the Pokemon struct. Upside is I can have it ranged 0-31, so Normal and Fairy (if it wasn't for the fact I don't like fairy) Hidden Power is possible, and IVs can be left alone. An NPC can check/change the value free
Also made a physical power cuz why screw over physical types for coverage that isn't EQ?

For those wondering, the unused value was meant for Cross Gen ribbon transfer, which the leaked DP beta confirms. Not sure why GF decided this early in Gen 3, but it never happened anyway, so rip Boxmon space

The Union Room is basically a place to hang out and a bunch of people can drop in/out of the room and then you do stuff like trade or battle or whatever.

the CCC was I believe for you to just connect to someone directly and do battles

Pretty much a combination of "GF understandably not knowing the lengths people would go to in competitive battling in 1999" + "GF not wanting to snap moves until 2019"

They nerfed Hidden Power once from 70 to 60 bp, if they really wanted it out of competitive play they could have just nerfed it more to 30 bp.

Dexit and Movesit were at best a desperate attempt to finish SwSh before its release date, at worst a scummy and lazy way to sell otherwise uninteresting DLC. Or at absolute super worst, just proof that Gamefreak is incompetent and so out of touch with the community that they didn't expect Dexit to be a big deal. Surprise! It was!

Because if physical and special are functionally interchangeable, then there's no reason to have either.
Making one side of the physical/special divide objectively shittier than the other for no reason isn't a fun or interesting way to differentiate the two. You're just making certain Pokémon worse.

I mean at that point, what even IS the point of keeping it around? Too weak for competitive play, too rng-based for even the earliest stages of the most casual of playthroughs
