An entirely new "Pocket Monsters" series is under development for release in 2010.

The Pokemon Company (headed by Tsunekazu Ishihara) has announced that the newest work in the Pocket Monsters RPG series (Game Freak, Nintendo) is being developed for the Nintendo DS for release by the end of 2010.

Since its first entry, "Pocket Monsters Red and Green" from 1996, the "Pocket Monsters" series has received high acclaim from customers around the world for its distinctive universe and gameplay that involves communicating between different versions to trade and battle. Sales for the entire series have climbed to over 130,000,000 copies worldwide.

The "Pocket Monsters" series for the Nintendo DS made use of the dual screen, touch screen, and Wi-Fi connection for play. The latest project under development is a completely new work, coming four years after "Pocket Monsters Diamond and Pearl" which boasts worldwide sales of over 17,150,000 copies (over 5,800,000 in Japan). It should make an innovative, fresh start by adding even more new game play and new Pokemon.

Please anticipate a later article with news about the game's content.

Just posting a translation from Pokebeach which even more strongly hints at a next gen.

I don't know how much store to set by claims like "completely new work", "innovative, fresh start by adding even more new game play". I mean, for all I know they could have said that about every Pokemon game when it was announced. I won't be surprised if it turns out to be more of the same. (And, of course, I'll probably still end up getting it anyway).

But how many times could they have said new Pokemon? Only at the start of a new generation.

RB Golbat, you got scooped by Dtrain (somewhere on page 2). And if that's only "strongly hinting", then punching someone in the face is "strongly hinting" that you don't like them.

Further proof that 5th gen will be on its way, Game freak director Junichi Masuda posted on his blog

Got this from Pokebeach
Gamefreak director Junichi Masuda has also announced the new game(s) on his blog, linking to the official announcement below. He says that the game(s) are in development right now and that the work is secret

Game Freak only make main series games, they haven't ever released a spinoff and if trends continute, this will highly be a 5th gen game!

Gen 5

Well, whatever it is, its still likely to sell like hotcakes XD

Gen 5 or not I don't really care. I'm just surprised they announced before hte release of HG/SS in NA, seeing as it might make some people (like 1 person per every 10,000-100,000 people) not buy the game and wait for the next one. Still, Considering how many of the Gen 4 pokes made it into OU, I'm scared of Gen 5. I mean, How will they keep things balanced? Might make things like Lucario get replaced, or Game Freak Forbid make them have evolutions in order to stay around.

But yeah, I'll wait until I can see more translated things around before judging. Still, Gen 5 seems here too early.

New Pokémon means new generation. It's as simple as that. This is Generation V.

I read that in Pokecommunity as well, everyone seemed hyped. But someone noted that the last time they said that "Pokemon RPG", and everyone thought it was Gen5... it was Pikachu's great adventure (or whatever the fuck it's called).

There were new pokemon in XD (well, at the time they were knew). Same with MD1. Don't get your hopes up, I don't think it's Gen4.

Neither of those were developed by Game Freak.

And your point is? What's stopping THEM from making a pointless bait-and-switch as well? With 5th gen pokemon (but only as a preview)?

And why would Pinsir get Megahorn? It has pincers, not horns.

Why would either Crawdawnt or Whiscash get Dragon Dance? Why would Honchcrow get Brave Bird, when crows are seen as cowardly?

It could very easily happen.

Three times out of three, when Game Freak has developed a new game with new Pokémon, it has been a new generation. Sure, they could change it up this time, but those are not odds you bet against.

Good point on the Dragon Dance, though.

assuming it is the 5th gen, the "big change" they mentioned shouldn't be....game changing as in things such as reveling another aspect of the pokemon (2nd gen: hold items, 3rd gen: abilities, 4th gen: physical/special split) since gen 4 and gen 5 i feel like should be "compatible" to each other. Well, it's not impossible but yeah. I feel like it's probably something along te line of...3D graphics implemented throughout the whole game like PBR while still being compatible with DPPt.

I will be very disappointed if this is indeed for the DS. I'm holding on to the possibility that it's for the next handheld, and they don't want to say much about it...

Also, a 2010 Japan date seems very unlikely, given that no new Pokémon have been revealed yet... Weren't the other games released about a year after a new Pokémon was announced? A later release would also mean that it's more likely to be for a new console rather than the DS, too.

At least if it is for the DS, I can be reasonably confident that Amethyst will have better graphics :P

Unless they go for full 3D or something, which would probably look bad on the DS anyway...

Considering how quickly Emerald came after FRLG, i suppose this isn't a complete surprise. However, Emerald wasn't a new gen, and FRLG was worse than HGSS (in my own humble opinion). I definitely think they are referring to the 5th gen, but even I think that coming by this year feels too soon. I guess for Japan it will be about a year's difference, which makes sense though. And then they'll just delay a North American release even more because they can.

i believe the new pokemon is the question mark they showed during the promotion for the upcoming new movie. FRLG was a meh game while HGSS in my opinion is actually quite fun.

oh and i wish the new legendaries won't be as HOLY UBER as the legends have become so far (ex: arceus + dragon trio...these are pretty much gods). Maybe they can do something like protector of elements and have monk-like (i want asian themed legendaries in terms of looks now...since we did get our ancient euro gods for the 4th gen) guardians. Maybe revolving around guardians of Shinto and buddhist religion. Well it will be pretty much impossible to top the arceus+trio dragons in terms of power (in anime) anyways.

Kingdom Hearts 358/2 days does an excellent job of full 3d on the DS. The console's very much able to do it. It's just so many developers AREN'T. In the rush to do fancy things with the stylus, most games have graphics no better than the GBA could do.

There is space for fighting, bug, and poison legendaries. The three types that haven't seen one yet.

yep, i'm hoping they would and probably will (i read somewhere they that have no intentions of making legendaries as powerful as the ones of the gen 4 or that they don't have to and well they shouldn't imo) make the legends not as UBER OMEGA powerful as the ones now (in anime). I'm looking forward to shinto religion or buddhist religion based legendaries (they could probably do something with fighting, poison, and bug especially with shinto religion backgrounds of good/bad spiritual guardians.

Finally, It's about time.
Get ready smogon because a shit storm is about to come.

Most accurate prediction thus far. :toast:

Exciting news. I'll suppress my excitement until more details come out, but the case for this being a 5th generation game certainly seems strong. I'm crossing my fingers for no more entry hazards and very limited priority additions.

New Pokemon, though, are the most enticing news.

new pokemons and they should power up certain types with some good moves
oh and i feel like they will add A LOT of evolutions of the old pokemons

It is a possibility that this could be for the successor to the current DS. There has been some buzz about a DS 2. I'm not familiar with the details, though. One thing is for sure, if this launches for the current DS, you know they will increase the visuals as much as possible. No generations have the same graphics and I'm not willing to bet they'll stop that trend now.

I just very much doubt that there will be more powerful handheld than the DSi released in 2010. And I think we would hear about a new console long before a new Pokemon game if the two were to be released together. After all, for a new console to succeed requires it to have games. For it to have games requires developers to know about it. And when you start having to get lots of developers involved, there's no way it's staying secret. If there was the DS 2 in the works, I think we'd know about it.

February 7th...that sounds like a date to watch for. I'm guessing he's referring to the anime. Maybe we'll see the first gen 5 Pokemon?

in 9 days... lol, does that mean Ash turns stupid and drops off all his trained pokemon except for Pikachu and goes on some ship to another land?
