What is Pokemon Adventures?
Pokémon Adventures (known as ''Pokémon Special'' in Japan) is a manga adaptation of the Pokémon games series. Creator Satoshi Tajiri has stated that it is more faithful to his original idea than any other adaptation.
The primary difference between it and the anime is that instead of the same main character going to a new region with different companions, the protagonist changes every time the previous protagonist's story is through. It's also somewhat violent, as it is one of the few adaptations where you actually see Pokémon and people get badly wounded and even killed.
The manga series is authored by Hidenori Kusaka. It was illustrated by Mato for the first 9 volumes, and since volume 10, has been illustrated by Satoshi Yamamoto. It is published by Shōgakukan under the Ladybird Comics Special imprint. In the United States, Viz Media released only the first two chapters (corresponding to the Generation I games) originally, though they have started publishing the series again starting with reprints of Gen I and continuing from there (albeit with some quirks, such as skipping Gen III entirely for some time). While Viz played catch-up, the closest official English translation for the missing chapters was the Singaporean version by Chuang Yi Comics, which translated the series up through Volume 41. After Chuang Yi went bust in early 2014, a subsidiary of Shogakukan called Shogakukan Asia has continued from where Chuang Yi left off.
Some "rules" to obey while discussing this manga:
1) Green is Red's rival. Blue is the girl with Squirtle.
2) Scanlations are not allowed otherwise the mods will lock this thread.
3) Due to the crazy release schedule, one can expect spoilers in the thread.
4) Have fun.
I'll start off some discussion here:
1) The finale of the RGB arc which comes down to a battle between Red and Green. The way in which both players revealed that their interactions had made them both better trainers and people were awesome to watch. Red's finishing move was also well-done and not over-the-top like some of the later moments in the manga.
2) The flashback in the RS arc reveals that Ruby, a kid, managed to fight off a wild Salamence with just Ralts, Poochyena and Skitty. In case the previous sentence doesn't have enough explanations, Ruby managed to fight off a wild (and likely pissed off) pseudo-legendary with just 3 "cannon-fodder" basic Pokemon and escaped with just a scar on his head. The fact that the manga managed to conceal this fact by showing Ruby's Pokemon's contest stat instead of their levels is just icing on the cake.
3) The manga does share some not so awesome moments though, imo. In the Yellow arc, the protagonist nearly causes a mass genocide by not making her Pokemon go stronger and evolve just because she wants them to be cute. The fact that she cried when her Pokemon evolved and she actively pressed the Cancel button to prevent her Pokemon's evolution (and her Pokemon might have wanted to be stronger to you know, prevent the End of the World as We Know It) is really annoying. It's something like drawing an action manga (say, One Piece) but have Luffy becoming a coward who refuses to fight and hides behind Zoro / Sanji all the time. Not helping matters is she hogs the spotlight and has one of the most OP powers in the series.
