[Overview]

Phanpy has a hard time in Little Cup [Really? since when?]. It is easily outclassed by other defensive walls such as Bronzor and Gligar in terms of defensive capabilities, as well as and Hippopotas , seeing as how it can also create an infinite sandstorm has an edge thanks to its Sand Stream ability. The main thing advantages that makes separate Phanpy different from these Pokémon the crowd is are that Phanpy it gets access to priority in the form of Ice Shard, resists Stealth Rock, and cannot be trapped by Magnemite. Also, unlike Gligar, Phanpy doesn’t have a 4x weakness to Ice-type attacks. Machop really poses as a threat to this set, so you might want a counter for it as well. [pretty irrelevant honestly]

move 2: Earthquake
move 3: Head Smash
move 4: Ice Shard

[SET COMMENTS]

Phanpy can use its good physical defense Defense and access to Stealth Rock to become one of the best leads in Little Cup. Phanpy's bulk allows it to take hits from common leads, such as Meowth, Aipom, and Diglett, and 2HKO back with the combination of Earthquake and Ice Shard. Phanpy also usually ends up on top against Voltorb, who only has a 2% chance of 2HKOing Phanpy with Hidden Power Ice, even with max Special Attack, and only has a slight chance of OHKOing with Explosion. Head Smash hits the Flying- and Ghost-types immune to Phanpy's STAB Earthquake hard.

This set can also be used as a tank later in the game,(remove) to set up Stealth Rock and start firing off STAB Earthquakes, of backed up by a decent Attack stat. Counter can be used to get a few surprise KOs but Counter greatly revolves around the element of surprise and good prediction.

One reason to use Phanpy over Gligar or Bronzor is that Phanpy is a sure-shot counter to Choice Scarf Cranidos. It resists Stone Edge, Ice Beam never 2HKOes through Oran Berry,(comma) and Earthquake has only a 50% chance of 3HKOing. In return, Phanpy also OHKOes back with Earthquake, and Focus Sash variants are finished off with Ice Shard, securing Phanpy's place as a solid Cranidos counter.

[ADDITIONAL COMMENTS]

In the lead position, Phanpy has trouble dealing with Omanyte, defensive Kabuto, and Snover. Mantyke pairs up nicely with Phanpy here, as it can take multiple hits from Omanyte thanks to its massive Special Defense, while threatening to OHKO with Hidden Power Grass or set up an Agility. Lead Houndour is also troublesome for Phanpy, and Mantyke can handle it as well. Mantyke further complements Phanpy by taking special hits directed at Phanpy, as well as possessing a useful Water-type immunity to help take on Scarf Wailmer leads. Snover can be eliminated by Croagunk, thanks to its STAB priority move in Vacuum Wave, while also being able to break a potential Substitute with Fake Out. Croagunk can also be used over Mantyke to take on all of the aforementioned threats;(s-colon) ,.(remove) However however, this leaves Phanpy without a sturdy specially defensive tank to fall back on. Mantyke can deal with Houndour to an extent. Phanpy is also useless against Bronzor, and so Magnet Rise Magnemite gets a mention for being able to take Bronzor out reliably while providing a resistance to Ice-type attacks.

[SET]
name: Life Orb
move 1: Earthquake
move 2: Ice Shard
move 3: Head Smash
move 4: Seed Bomb / Superpower
item: Life Orb
nature: Jolly / Adamant
ev's: 196 HP / 196 Atk / 116 Def

[SET COMMENTS]

Phanpy can be a great Life Orb sweeper, as it reaches a decent 16 Attack stat. Its best attack is a STAB Earthquake, putting a huge dent on in anything that it hits for neutral damage. Ice Shard is a great priority move, and makes Phanpy an excellent revenge-killer revenge killer. Ice Shard 2HKOs 2HKOes most Gligar sets. Head Smash is an ideal choice for the third moveslot, hitting Flying-types and Bug-types super effectively, especially Paras who can otherwise survive all other attacks and put Phanpy to sleep with Spore. Seed Bomb hits Water-types such as Staryu, Clamperl, and Buizel harder than any other of Phanpy's other moves, whereas Superpower hits Bronzor for decent damage. However, the Attack and Defense drops are not appreciated. Munchlax is another target for Phanpy's Superpower. However, Superpower allows gives Ghost-types another opportunity to switch in, which could have disastrous results late game late-game.

[ADDITIONAL COMMENTS]

Though Life Orb Phanpy deals a chunk of damage even to Pokemon who resist Earthquake, it is still walled by quite a few Pokemon. Bronzor is the main counter to Life Orb Phanpy, but can be taken out by Magnet Rise Magnemite easily. Stunky is a fine check for Ghosts that are immune to Earthquake. Munchlax is a good defensive partner for Phanpy, shrugging off Ice-type attacks and specially based Grass and Water Grass- and Water-type moves, while hitting Ghosts with Pursuit. It also does not take much from special attacks,(comma) and can hit while hitting Bronzor with Fire Punch.

[Team Options]

Like most other sweepers, Life Orb Phanpy greatly appreciates both Stealth Rock and dual screens in play. Stealth Rock makes Flying-types think twice before switching into an Earthquake, and also breaks all Focus Sashes on the opponent’s team, making it harder to switch switching frail and fast revenge-killers revenge killers in harder. Dual Screens screens are greatly appreciated on the Life Orb sweeper set, as they increase Phanpy's staying power, allowing it to stay on the offensive for longer.

Offensively, Phanpy needs a few teammates to help it really shine by taking out its common counters. First of all, Magnet Rise Magnemite deals with Bronzor, a problem for every Phanpy user. Stunky is another such Pokemon that greatly assists Phanpy by eliminating the Ghost-types of Little Cup, namely Drifloon, Gastly, and Duskull, all of which come in for free on Earthquake. They can deal a great amount of damage back with strong special attacks. Finally, fast, frail sweepers do well when their backs are covered by Phanpy's natural bulkiness and Stealth Rock. Sweepers such as Elekid and Houndour are examples of sweepers that pair up well with Phanpy offensively, as they both appreciate the elimination of Focus Sashes as well as the residual damage, turning many 2HKOes 2HKOs into OHKOes OHKOs.

When paired with certain Pokemon, Phanpy forms a solid defensive core. Mantyke covers Phanpy's weaknesses quite well, sporting an immunity to one of the most common offensive types, Water, while using its massive base 120 Special Defense to sponge neutral special Grass and Ice type Grass- and Ice-type hits. In return, Phanpy is unfazed by Electric moves and shrugs off even the strongest of Rock-type attacks. When also used with Magnemite, these three form a great defensive core,(comma) since - each every individual weakness being is resisted by one member or more in the trio. If Magnemite does not appeal to you, a specially defensive Bronzor of your own is a great addition to any team, especially when used in tandem with Phanpy to provide dual screen support as well as a handy resistance to Ice- and Grass-type attacks. Generally, anything with a reasonable amount of Special Defense and HP is a good teammate for Phanpy, like Munchlax and Lileep under a sandstorm.

[Optional Changes]

Phanpy has little else going for it in terms of other usable moves. Rock Slide may be used on the Tank and Life Orb sets to avoid taking for lack of recoil damage that Head Smash provides and have better accuracy compared to Head Smash, but it only has half the base power Base Power. Knock Off may be used on the Lead set, but in the fast-paced metagame of Little Cup, you're much better off attacking.

In terms of alternative sets, Phanpy can run an effective Choice Band set, though low Speed and the fact that so much of Little Cup is immune to Earthquake means that the risk outweighs the reward. Phanpy can also run a Choice Scarf set,(comma) as it reaches 14 unboosted Speed, which increases to 21 with a Choice Scarf, allowing you to outspeed everything without a boost; however, even though Phanpy does get Head Smash, it has a hard time differentiating from Sandshrew, who can run a similar set but with a greater Attack stat. Apart from that, Phanpy has no real options other than the ones already mentioned.

The EVs on the Lead set are specifically designed to allow Phanpy to survive Lead Houndour’s Overheat most of the time,(comma) as well as to outspeed Omanyte who don't invest in Speed, and tie with ones those that do. On the Life Orb set,(comma) Attack and HP should be maxed out, since Speed is not a priority due to Phanpy's inability to outspeed many Pokemon even with maximum speed. Phanpy can run an Endeavor set, but it is not recommended,(comma) .(remove) There since there are too so many priority users in the Little Cup metagame. Essentially any Pokémon with a Choice Scarf or a priority move could easily take down Endeavor Phanpy.

Phanpy can use a Choice Band. It has a high enough base attack Attack for it to work. Unfortunately, there are a lot of Flying-types and Levitators who are immune to Phanpy's Earthquake. Also, Phanpy doesn't have a decent speed stat. Aside from the Earthquake issue, though, a Choice Band set on Phanpy could actually work out if used with the right moves and team.

[I've added a sentence to the first paragraph as this much devoted to CB is fairly unnecessary imo]

[Counters]

For the Lead set, Ghost-types such as Gastly and Drifloon can put Phanpy to sleep, although they must watch out for Head Smash. They also have the choice of blasting Phanpy with strong STAB Shadow Balls. Bronzor also takes no considerable damage from Phanpy and can set up Stealth Rock or attack with Flash Cannon or Psychic.

For the Life Orb set, Bronzor almost completely walls Phanpy, as even a Life Orb boosted Superpower does less than 50% to it. In return, Bronzor can just either stall Phanpy out or attack it with Flash Cannon or Hidden Power Ice. Paras can switch in on anything but Head Smash and then threaten to Spore it or punish it with Seed Bomb. Mantyke is especially good, as it resists Superpower, is immune to Earthquake and takes little damage from Ice Shard. Almost any bulky Water-type can come in on Phanpy and scare it off, although Mantyke must beware of switching into a Head Smash.

EDIT: Withholding stamp for a second check

I'm really sorry about posting right after a check, but I just felt the need to do so (and I think I was working on the same thing as bmb for the past day). This isn't "official". I didn't get too far though and I put the checks from bmb that I felt were good in the parts I checked (I left the parts I did not check alone). Can you placeholder in advance if you're PM/VMed so I can avoid this (I did put a placeholder)?

Oh damn I missed your placeholder, I'm really sorry Flora

I know how annoying that is, I really need to start placeholdering myself.

I'll just echo Flora and say I'll give this a run-over after checks are implemented and Flora finishes the second check.

I made the changes that Bugmaniacbob and Flora told me to do. Anything else? If not, can I get that second GP check?

Phanpy can also run a Choice Scarf set as it reaches 14 unboosted Speed, which increases to 21 with a Choice Scarf, allowing you Phanpy to outspeed everything Pokemon without a boost; however, even though Phanpy does get Head Smash, it has a hard time differentiating from Sandshrew, who can run a similar set but with a greater Attack stat. Phanpy can run an Endeavor set, but it is not recommended because any Pokemon with a Choice Scarf or a priority move can easily take down Endeavor Phanpy. There are too many priority users in the Little Cup metagame. Essentially any Pokémon with a Choice Scarf or a priority move could easily take down Endeavor Phanpy.

[Counters]

For the Lead set, Ghost-types such as Gastly and Drifloon can put Phanpy to sleep, although they must watch out for Head Smash. They also have the a choice of blasting Phanpy with strong STAB Shadow Balls.

Paras can switch in on anything attack but Head Smash and then threaten to Spore it or punish it with Seed Bomb. Almost any bulky Water can come in on Phanpy and scare it off. Mantyke is especially good, as it resists Superpower, is immune to Earthquake, (comma) and takes little damage from Ice Shard, although Mantyke must beware of switching into Head Smash.

So... I guess this would be 1/2 since bmb wants to swing by for a final check so you don't need to go edit the GP edit number in your OP. (bmb, you won't need to report back to the queue since you've already did. I'll post there to say it's done when you finish.)

I'll go ahead and comment a little on your writing though. You usually create sentences that can be easily combined with others; if a sentence feels too short or vague, combine it with another sentence that goes along with it, or just add more information in general. Don't repeat information as well, unless it's in short reference to another paragraph.

Hmm, perhaps the Overview needs some more information too. Are there any downfalls to using Phanpy other than it's a struggle between using it and the other tanks? Add these in before the conclusion sentence and after the advantages. If you can't think of any, then I guess it doesn't need it.

I'm also thinking maybe the Counters section should be more written to the overall general Phanpy, so you don't repeat information (Bronzor). It'll just need some short changes, like:

Err, can you remove these in red? Spaces meant you were suppose to space the part, not keep it. Also found another "spacing error" that was probably made when you were editing.

[Overview]

Although Phanpy has a hard time competing with other defensive walls, such as Bronzor, Gligar, and Hippopotas, it has a couple of tricks up its sleeves. The main advantages that separates Phanpy from these Pokemon are access to priority in the form of Ice Shard, Head Smash, and higher base HP. Also, unlike Gligar, Phanpy doesn’t have a 4x weakness to Ice-type attacks. One problem with Phanpy, though, is that, unlike Gligar, Phanpy does not have a decent speed stat, which makes Phanpy's battle time lower a chunk compared to Gligar's. Taking into account its advantages, Phanpy has an excellent role to play in this metagame.

[SET]
name: Lead Tank
move 1: Stealth Rock
move 2: Earthquake
move 3: Head Smash
move 4: Ice Shard
item: Oran Berry
nature: Impish / Adamant
evs: 116 HP / 196 Atk / 116 Def / 36 SpD / 36 Spe

[SET COMMENTS]

With its combination of good physical bulk and access to Stealth Rock, Phanpy can become one of the best leads in Little Cup. Phanpy's bulk allows it to take hits from common leads, such as Meowth, Aipom, and Diglett, and 2HKO back with a mixture of Earthquake and Ice Shard. For example, Phanpy usually ends up on top against Voltorb, who only has a 2% chance of 2HKOing Phanpy with Hidden Power Ice, and only a slight chance of OHKOing with Explosion. Setting up Stealth Rock from the start helps by gradually weaken your opponent overtime, which lets your sweepers clean-up easier. Earthquake is Phanpy's primary STAB attack that can deal major damage to the foe. Head Smash hits Flying- and Ghost-types immune to Phanpy's STAB Earthquake hard, while Ice Shard helps pick off weakened opponents.

[ADDITIONAL COMMENTS]

This set can also be used as a tank later in the game in order to set up Stealth Rock and fire off vicious attacks. By preserving Phanpy as a mid- to late-game tank, you also gain a counter to the dangerous Choice Scarf Cranidos. Cranidos's attacks do poorly against Phanpy; Stone Edge is resisted, Ice Beam never 2HKOes through Oran Berry, and Earthquake only has a 50% chance of 3HKOing. In return, Phanpy can OHKO Cranidos with Earthquake, and Focus Sash variants are finished off with Ice Shard, securing Phanpy's place as a solid Cranidos counter.

Phanpy has trouble dealing with Water-types and Snover. Mantyke pairs up nicely with Phanpy here, as it can take multiple hits from Water-types such as Wailmer and Omanyte thanks to its massive Special Defense and Water Absorb, and then threaten to OHKO back with Hidden Power Grass or set up an Agility. Additionally, Mantyke can handle Lead Houndour, who is troublesome for Phanpy. Snover can be eliminated by Croagunk, thanks to its STAB priority move in Vacuum Wave. Croagunk can also be used over Mantyke to take on all of the aforementioned threats. However, this leaves Phanpy without a sturdy specially-defensive tank to fall back on. Phanpy is also useless against Bronzor, so Magnet Rise Magnemite gets a mention for being able to take Bronzor out reliably while providing resistances to Ice and Grass attacks.

[SET]
name: Life Orb
move 1: Earthquake
move 2: Ice Shard
move 3: Head Smash
move 4: Seed Bomb / Superpower
item: Life Orb
nature: Jolly / Adamant
evs: 196 HP / 196 Atk / 116 Def

[SET COMMENTS]

Phanpy can be a great Life Orb sweeper, as it reaches a decent 16 Attack stat and has wide coverage. Its best attack is STAB Earthquake, which can put a huge dent on any Pokemon not resistant to it. Ice Shard is a great priority move that makes Phanpy an excellent revenge killer; for example, Ice Shard 2HKOes most Gligar sets. Head Smash is an ideal choice for the third moveslot, hitting Flying- and Bug-types super effectively, especially Paras who can otherwise survive all of the other attacks and put Phanpy to sleep with Spore. Seed Bomb strikes Water-types such as Staryu, Clamperl, and Buizel harder than any other of Phanpy's moves, whereas Superpower can deal decent damage to Bronzor as well as OHKO Munchlax. However,(space) not only are the Attack and Defense drop not appreciated, but Ghost-types are granted an opportunity to freely switch in.

[ADDITIONAL COMMENTS]

Although Life Orb Phanpy deals a chunk of damage even to Pokemon who resist Earthquake, it is still walled by quite a few Pokemon. Bronzor is the main counter to Life Orb Phanpy, but can be taken out by Magnet Rise Magnemite easily. Stunky is a fine check for Ghosts who are immune to Earthquake. Munchlax is a good defensive partner for Phanpy, as it can shrug off Ice attacks and specially-based attacks, while also being able to hit Ghosts with Pursuit and Bronzor with Fire Punch.

[Team Options]

Like most other sweepers, Life Orb Phanpy greatly appreciates both Stealth Rock and dual screens in play. Stealth Rock makes Flying-types think twice before switching into an Earthquake, and also breaks all Focus Sashes on the opponent’s team, making switching frail and fast revenge killers in harder. Dual screens are greatly appreciated on this set, as they increase Phanpy's staying power, which allows it to stay on the offensive for longer.

Offensively, Phanpy needs teammates who can take out its common counters. First of all, Magnet Rise Magnemite deals with Bronzor, a problem for every Phanpy. Stunky is another such Pokemon who greatly assists Phanpy by eliminating the Ghost-types of Little Cup, namely Drifloon, Gastly, and Duskull; all three can come in for free on(space)Earthquake and deal a great amount of damage back with strong special attacks. Finally, fast, frail sweepers do well when their backs are covered by Phanpy's natural bulkiness and Stealth Rock. Sweepers such as Elekid and Houndour are examples of sweepers who pair up well with Phanpy offensively, as they both appreciate the elimination of Focus Sashes as well as the residual damage.

When paired with certain Pokemon, Phanpy forms a solid defensive core. Mantyke covers Phanpy's weaknesses quite well, sporting an immunity to one of the most common offensive types, Water, while using its massive base 120 Special Defense to sponge neutral special(space this)Grass- and Ice-type hits. In return, Phanpy is unfazed by Electric moves and shrugs off even the strongest of Rock-type attacks. When also used with Magnemite, these three form a great defensive core with each weakness being resisted by one member or more in the trio. If Magnemite does not appeal to you, specially-defensive Bronzor is a great replacement, especially when used in tandem with Phanpy to provide dual screen support as well as a handy resistance to Ice- and Grass-type attacks. Generally, any Pokemon with a reasonable amount of Special Defense and HP is a good teammate for Phanpy, like Munchlax and Lileep under a sandstorm.

[Optional Changes]

Phanpy has little else going for it in terms of other usable moves. Rock Slide may be used to avoid taking Head Smash's recoil damage and have better accuracy, but it only has half the Base Power. Knock Off may be used on the Lead set, but in the fast paced metagame of Little Cup, you're much better off attacking. In terms of alternative sets, Phanpy can run an effective Choice Band set, though low Speed and the fact that so much of Little Cup is immune to Earthquake means that the risk outweighs the reward. My final quick check, also incorporating Flora's spacing corrections

Nice to get this out of the way at last

Forgive me if this is the 4th gen analysis for Phanpy, but I have got to say that Gamefreak must have something against it. Donphan gets Sturdy and Rapid Spin, arguably its two most things (sturdy is like a focus sash in gen 5), and what does phanpy get? Pickup? At least it does something this generation.
