Personal ZU Viability Rankings

The dynamic path of the ZU tier in the beginning of generation 8 and the fundamentally subjective nature of tiering lead to a cohabitation of different opinions between players regarding the ranking of Pokémon. Each person has their own style, tests different niche Pokémon, or enjoys playing some archetypes rather than others, which gives rise to an individual point of view on the evolution of the metagame. I invite players in this thread to share their own viability rankings about ZU and eventually to give explanations regarding the position of different Pokémon.

Rules :

1. This thread is destined to be a serious resource. Please be relevant in keeping your posts related to your personal ZU Viability Rankings.​
2. To show the icon of a Pokemon, you have to write its full name between two two points. For example, for Mr Mime-Galar :Mr Mime-Galar:​
3. You don't need to explain the position of every Pokemon, especially if it's at the same rank as the official Viability Rankings.​

My personal opinion, since I haven't personally tested some of these pokemon, my primary evaluation strategy was to determine the most centralizing pokemon and evaluate the rest of the tier based on their viability against them (as you can see, dark types tend to do well, since there is a multitude of very good ghosts and psychics):

Gothitelle: pretty strong wincon with few real checks
Dusclops: special wall resttalker and pseudo-offensive spinblocker

Linoone-Galar: Best Dark in the tier, mandatory A, very versatile
Mr. Mime: the underrated, actually more effective Mime
Machoke: Very good stallbreaker, unfortunate speed tier
Oranguru: Ghost immunity, amazing coverage
Silvally-Ice: versatile, one of the best physical sweepers, great special movepool
Mr. Mime-Galar: Overrated Mime

A-
Vullaby: Dark type, offensive Gourg check, hazard remover
Morgrem: np, super useful dual STAB, priority status user
Persian: worse Linoone-G except for Fake Out, which is one of the best moves in the tier
Pyukumuku.
Klang: Good typing, solid resttalker
Farfetch'd: Very versatile, fantastic priority, slow + frail and weak to rocks
Corsola: Very solid longevity = very solid rocker, also a physical chipper
Ivysaur: Knock off + recovery + beats most stall pokemon
Cufant: Steel + solid offensive prowess + rocks

Gloom: bulkier ivysaur without knock off
Trubbish: only relevant tspiker, can also use spikes
Krokorok: Pressures psychics and ghosts and can set rocks, frail
Shiinotic: Gloom with worse typing and better statusing
Octillery: Amazing Stallbreaker, slow and HATES chip damage
Rufflet: Glass cannon: band/scarf, amazing but frail stallbreaker
Lampent: trick user, very useful STAB
Seadra: best offensive water due to good speed tier, decent SpA, and easy switch out potential
Natu: Magic Bounce

Gourgeist-L - The best Pokémon by far in ZU, it has great stats ad typing, access to powerful STAB moves and has 4 extremly good sets.
Galarian Mr. Mime - Very useful in offense with Rapid Spin and Healing Wish. It is also a deadly sweeper thanks to Nasty Plot + Rapid Spin.

Dusclops - The best special songe in ZU, it fits on every team which isn't HO and thansk to Poltergeist, isn't passive.
Machoke - Very powerfull tank and wallbreaker, that can absorb status and cripple its checks with Knock Off.
Klang - It walls most attackers that don't have a super effective move, can pivot with Volt Switch or be a threatening cleaner with Shift Gear.

Farfetch'd - The most difficult Pokemon to switch into atm, powerful revenge killer with First Impression. Its biggest issue is its low bulk.
Galarian Linoone - Great stallbreaker and fast pivot, that has great resists and one of the most threatening Knock Off.
Oranguru - Very good stallbreaker that has a coveted Ghost-immunity, great bulk and access to Focus Blast to deal with Dark-types.
Mr. Mime - Best Scarfer in the tier and very threatening wallbreaker with either Specs or Nasty Plot.
Persian - Fastest Pokemon available, extremely good pivot and revenge killer.
Gothitelle - Very versatile special attacker, that is a great asset for offensive and defensive teams focused on hazard.

A-
Vullaby - Best defogger, most reliable Psychic-resists, great defensive pivot and the best Gourgeist-L counter.
Wartortle - Deadly sweeper once Dusclops is out.
Eiscue - Underplayed but still has threatening as ever.
Ivysaur - Incredible stallbreaker that has very usefull resistances, being able to check some Gourgeist-L and Machoke.
Trubbish - Best Spikes/Toxic Spikes setter in the tier, hazard stacking balance arround it is one of the most potent playstyle atm.
Silvally-Ice - Great Swords Dance user and pivot, but it is limited by its terrible typing.

I know I put alot in S but I feel like they all belong there, they are all massive threats that can just 6-0 unprepared teams or even prepared teams. All of them limit teambuilding immensely and are very centralising. I wouldn't care if they all got banned right now. The tier would be much more fun without them. Look at the list again without the S rank threats. Perfection.

"ZUPL II Is Over Party" / Post-KlanGrapp Vote / End of September Personal VR
As a fun little exercise, I decided to make the ranking system a bell curve rather than the traditional top inflated cascade so that it would be more reflective of what I like to use or what I see as valuable to teams. This constraint ended up being really interesting for defining the best mons in the meta versus the unique ones.
I use the term "role crunch" here to express a negative aspect of role compression that I think leads a lot of less useful Pokemon being used or ranked simply because they can (sometimes theoretically) fill certain holes or roles on teams.

S

Iron Maiden

No justification needed. Klang is in S because it's broken and has warped the metagame around itself, overprep, and really obnoxious picks. It's distinct from the rest of the meta for its level of brokenness, pushing the curve up higher.

A+

World Wonder

Ston is simply the best physical breaker, offensive rocker, and physical scarfer in the tier that has defined the metagame relying on bulky ground types to check it.

Hivemind

Vespiquen has completely defined the hazard metagame with both Toxic Spikes and Defog while it fits on pretty much any archetype with its bulk, decent power, and utility.

A

Magic Trick

Hattrem, though its typing and bulk can be wanting, Hattrem has made certain threats of the metagame even more dangerous while defining the viabilities of a number of hazard setters and passive Pokemon.

Big Top

I legitimately believe Mime origin forme is the better of the two clowns. It's such a potent breaker and scarfer and carries a variety of utility options that gives Hattrem competition on offense.

Cucumber Salad

We have learned again and again what Pyuk does. It's a mandatory stallmon that shuts down most setup and defines what gets to be a breaker/sweeper/setup mon or not.

A-

Pumpkin Spice

Gourgeist has lost a lot of its initial usefulness IMO but the set diversity and options it has make up for that. It's such a splashable gluemon and pick even in a time of T-Spikes and post-Grapploct.

Blooming Onion

I'm not Ivy S Rank Gang or whatever but I do think Ivysaur is incredible at making progress as a defensive mon and it really enjoys being the most viable grounded Poison right now. I think it's too threatened by Klang and the Psychics to be at the top, but it's very potent as glue.

Cousin It

I actually think Gime is in a place where it's less useful than Mime classic taste right now. It's still the best offensive spinner in the tier and an extremely threatening special setup sweeper, but the meta has adapted to its presence, and it no longer just has the easiest matchups in the world. Its downward trend in usage has also reflected that. I think it lacks some of the other unique traits of Mime by almost always being the Spinner variant.

rat

I hate this rat but it is the best offensive progress maker and revenge killer. It's not nearly as potent as it was maybe a few weeks ago, but PikaStonKlang is hugely threatening to the metagame and Pikachu contributes a lot to needing to run a defensive Grass and defensive Ground on every team.

B+

Void

Dusclops is always in a weird meta position of being somewhat wanted, somewhat needed, but never both. It's the best defensive spinblocker in the entire meta and thick to boot (even after a Knock), but it's still so passive and has to deal with the growing potency of many mons right now.

Sister Cells

Simply put, I think Duosion is extremely neglected as a wincon, as if the opposing team is lacking a Dark type or a direct way to stop its sweep, it will almost assuredly win, even if you're left with it 5-1. Toxic Spikes being the meta only benefit it more, and that defensive cores have been dropping Dark types and offensive Gourg+Trev have fallen out, it's even better than ever. It even beats Klang if you have enough luck to not get crit. Do not sleep on this thing.

Gun Show

Machoke is arguably one of the best gluemons aside from Vespiquen and Ivysaur, and Grapploct's departure gives it less competition as a Fighting type and less obligation to run Restalk. That said, Restalk is still arguably its best set, and being Toxic Spike agnostic while giving few free switches is a great feature.

Zip Zap Zoop

Raichu is the tier's best offensive Volt Switch user and it's second best special breaker. Being second best isn't altogether too bad though, and though it had less of an impact than initially predicted, Raichu is a persistently top threat in the meta. Raichu just wishes teams would stop running defensive Grasses and Grounds all the time.

A Choice of One Option

Icevally is a second best physical breaker, second best special pivot, and second best physical sweeper that is weak to Rocks without chance of recourse against T-Spikes either. Normally that would make it bad, but the meta aligns in such a way that Icevally can simply 6-0 some teams. The overreliance on defensive Grounds/Grasses as KlangStonPika checks means Icevally gets to devour most defensive cores. Do not build your teams without keeping it in mind.

B

Interstellar

Beh is a hyperpotent special breaker that comes with recovery and a fantastic ability but no bulk or typing to really abuse it. And it will get worse if people start running actual Dark types again.

Glower Power

I actually prefer using Duosion to Goth in general because of the Toxic Spikes immunity and the usefulness of not needing to Rest or anything. I will say that Goth's set flexibility in the bulky booster set, Knock agnosticism, and potential for sets beyond bulky boosting are notable. It's just not my favorite, but it's very threatening and demands defensive prep.

Tan Sand, Pink Milk

A role compressor and defensive mon that doesn't suffer role crunch or become useless once it's Knocked. Hippo is one of the best defensive responses to PikaSton, and it can at least phaze out Klang if it has Whirlwind and Klang isn't the last one standing. Hippo struggles a bit with Hatt, but it's still not entirely passive, which works in its favor.

Shoot for the Mooon

Luna is cool for being a special rocker in a tier that's mostly just physical rockers or defensive passive ones. Its potential to pull out some threatening setup on a whim can really put pressure on teams in a way that most other rockers lack. Threatening Vespi and Hatt both can be a boon for teams, but Luna's typing, speed, and physical bulk can compromise teams in certain matches.

The best antimeta mon with okay set dualism, but I find that Whiscash has been grossly overrated in a bid to make Klang less broken. The SubToxic set is fine I guess, but not as great as the Choice Specs set, which itself lacks power.

The Dragon

I cannot emphasize enough just how underrated Zweilous is. Even taking into account its Fairy/Ice weakness and Hustle misses, Zweilous is so useful as a tank that takes care of the extremely common Grass/Ground/Ghost defensive cores and dangerous slower Psychics in just one slot.

Shake Ya Body

Bellossom would be one of the most terrifying special sweepers in the tier if it weren't for the fact that it always has a bad meta, always has a bad matchup, always has the wrong moveset. It still lurks in the back of my mind though...

Emolga is great as a progress making pivot that borrows from a lot of better mons, but it doesn't always borrow them in a way that makes it altogether stable considering it wants 8 moves on one set. This does create an unpredictable factor to be weaponized, and I won't say I haven't been smacked by it a bit.

Fraxure continues to kind of tread water as an offensive threat that was predicted to be much more dangerous than it turned out to be. That said, SD still murders stall, and its other sets remain nightmarish in power. It just has problems getting set up and CB is too easily exploited for it to be meta defining.

Look Into the Light

Lamp is the second best antimeta mon (Gime, Klang, Vespi, Ivy, Icevally) that is held almost entirely back by its awful bulk and even worse hazard susceptibility. There's plenty of removal/deterrent options to support it, but Lampent is highly reliant on team support to function. So fun to use though.

Speed, But Not Extreme

Goone has seen better days, but it's still the best of all the normal type pivots and it remains very potent even as the meta has crept up in power and speed. Too many people just assume it's an artifact of the Alpha, when Goone's Taunt and Dark typing shut down so many of the wincons in the tier while still providing offensive progress with Parting Shot and Knock.

Babysitter's Club

A crazy ex-best Defogger, Grassy Terrain check, and overall Psychic beater. It's been pushed down and around by the increasing power, shifting meta, and even utility creep of the tier. As offensive Psychics return to the forefront though, it should not be neglected that Vullaby offers a very convenient typing, recovery, and post-Knock bulk too.

Our ex-best spinner has seen better days, and even with all of its new toys, it has not stood up to the test of time or the Toxic Spikes meta. Wartortle can still be an okay defensive spinner if you run Ivy with it or have some other hazard removal option for T-Spikes, but that can really force teams to build a certain way. Shell Smash also does not have the same potency as it once did, as other special sweepers have risen up to dominate it.

Like Beh, Eiscue is a hyperpotent offensive threat, but as physical sweeper. Also like Beh, it's not exactly enjoying this Toxic Spikes meta. And that's disregarding that Eiscue often wants the stars to align for it to sweep.

Jaw Drop

One of the most convenient typings with the most inconvenient bulk. It can set against Hatt and force offensive progress, but it's also a Dark/Ground type that struggles to stay alive until late in the game, which is a liability when it either stacks weaknesses or forces the team to find other Psychic and PikaStonKlang checks.

Good defensive StonKlangPika check lacking recovery and doesn't necessarily lose to Hatt. I think it's been spammed a bit too much for its own good, and I don't always like using it all that much. More of a "just not for me" type pick rather than one that's actually all that bad.

Nightmarish non-Psychic special breaker that requires no setup, just add water (haha). However, Oct usually really wants its team to run webs, and while this isn't necessarily the hardest thing to do considering Charjabug beats Hatt, it can still make the team archetype bend in more rigid dimensions. It's also sort of a Klang check, but I have trouble really just fitting it on most teams.

OOH WA AH AH!

Monkey see, monkey struggle to keep up with meta. Orang being jack of all trades Psychic with a semi-convenient typing and glue potential is good for it, but the lack of recovery beyond Leftovers can be really damning. There are moments for it to 6-0 though, and many teams make themselves unintentionally weak to NP variants.

PRAISE THE SUN

Solrock is an interesting defensive rocker that capitalizes on its unique typing with recovery to punish stuff like Vespiquen and Ston at the same time... but it gets chunked way too easily. It's a defensive mon that needs to be met halfway, and usually only does its job halfway too.

Tree (Weird)

As an unexpected HO rocker, Sudo can really break through teams that are prepped for Ston but not it. There's been a number of times where I've beaten someone down with it, been beaten down by it, or had to play very carefully against it. However, that surprise factor on Ston is mostly because it tends to really compete with Ston and only fit on one archetype.

Tree (Evil)

As an abuser of Grassy Terrain or Webs, CB Trev is a menace, even to teams that prepped themselves more for Gourg's level of power. On the other side, Trev sometimes struggles to define itself out of "Gourg but with a bit more power and less defense" in a meta that really likes defensive Grass types. You either beat em, or you join them on a Terrain team.

C

Polarized

The most fearsome weather sweeper in the tier, held back by codependency on Vulpix-A to function. Only SD is really viable too, and it doesn't succeed on webs or make rain succeed.

Rocky Road

I decided to try my hand at this, since I've been laddering and battling a lot since the recent shift and think I have a pretty decent view of the meta right now. I personally believe that Type: Null, Rapidash-Galar, Lilligant, Drednaw, Dubwool, and perhaps Musharna are all deserving of an upcoming council slate (not necessarily ban, but slate). However, Dubwool in S- seemed weird since it's hard-countered by Ghost-Type Pokémon, which while oppressive for some playstyles at the building stage, is much less oppressive for others. Beyond that, I think this viability ranking has a valid progression between top-tier threats and counters to those threats.
