Dragon Dance allows Mega Tyranitar to take advantage of the setup opportunities provided, thanks to its massive bulk with sand further boosting its Special Defense. Stone Edge hits neutral targets like Clefable and Tapu Fini for major damage and rips through Fire- and Flying-types like Mega Charizard X, Volcarona, Tornadus-T, and Zapdos. Fire Punch punishes Steel-types like Ferrothorn, Kartana, and Mega Scizor. Earthquake threatens the likes of Mega Mawile, Magearna, Toxapex, Heatran, and opposing Tyranitar for major damage. Finally, Ice Punch smashes Gliscor and Landorus-T and provides an option to OHKO offensive Kommo-o at +1 after Stealth Rock and sandstorm damage.

Set Details

A Jolly nature is necessary to outspeed Timid Magearna, Modest Heatran, and Adamant Dragonite before a boost, and Greninja and Tapu Koko after a boost. Sand Stream is Tyranitar's preferred ability before it Mega Evolves, as this enables Tyranitar to immediately boost its Special Defense before setting up.

Usage Tips
========

Dragon Dance Mega Tyranitar functions best as a wallbreaker and late-game cleaner that can utilize its massive bulk to find setup opportunities against Pokemon that it forces out, such as Heatran and Zapdos. If it is used in the early-game, it can forgo setting up and focus on attacking to chip answers like Kommo-o and Mega Swampert so that its teammates can clean up later in the game. If it is used on a sand team, it can also use the opportunity to bluff a different set before attempting to set up later in the game. Mega Tyranitar must avoid attempting to set up if checks like Mega Lopunny, Skarmory, Mega Swampert, and Seismitoad are still active and wait until they are removed or weakened before attempting to sweep. Mega Tyranitar must also be mindful of its HP, as taking chip damage will reduce its setup opportunities later in the game. If Mega Tyranitar is facing an opposing weather team, it can use the sand to shut down Pokemon that can set up the weather or rely on weather to threaten its team, such as Pelipper and Mega Swampert, respectively. Tyranitar can also delay Mega Evolving while setting up Dragon Dance so that it can retain another chance to activate Sand Stream.

Team Options
========

This Mega Tyranitar set is a solid fit on sand and hyper offense teams, which appreciate its role compression of a Dragon Dance sweeper and a sand setter in one team slot. On sand teams, Sand Rush Excadrill has incredible synergy with Mega Tyranitar, as the sand provided turns Excadrill into a dangerous revenge killer and late-game cleaner. Toxapex provides the team with the necessary Water resistance, absorbs opposing Toxic Spikes, and sets up its own Toxic Spikes, putting checks like Gastrodon and Mega Lopunny on a ticking timer. Celesteela can take on the likes of Mega Alakazam and Tapu Lele and immediately threaten them with Heavy Slam. Tapu Fini provides a crucial answer to Water- and Fighting-types like Ash-Greninja, Kommo-o, and Hawlucha, pressures bulkier teams with Taunt + Nature's Madness, and sets up Misty Terrain, allowing Mega Tyranitar to safely set up without the risk of status ailments. Pivot support from the likes of Zapdos, Landorus-T, and Tornadus-T is also helpful, as they can grant a safe entry with Volt Switch and U-turn. Offensive Grass-types like Kartana and Tapu Bulu are also solid partners, as they can take on bulky Water- and Ground-types like Mega Slowbro, Gastrodon, and Seismitoad. Additionally, Tapu Bulu also summons Grassy Terrain, providing Mega Tyranitar with extra longevity and reducing the damage it takes from Earthquake. Ash-Greninja provides Spikes support, pressuring shared checks like Tapu Bulu and Kommo-o, and allowing them to more easily break through teams after they are weakened or eliminated. Magnezone traps and removes Skarmory, Mega Scizor, and Ferrothorn, taking a lot of pressure off of Mega Tyranitar and allowing it to more easily run Earthquake over Fire Punch. On hyper offense teams, a dedicated lead such as Taunt Mew and Imprison Landorus-T is greatly appreciated for being able to deny opposing entry hazards while setting up entry hazards of its own. Tapu Koko is a valuable teammate for Mega Tyranitar, as it can set up dual screens, providing it with more setup opportunities and making it more difficult to revenge kill, especially with the added special bulk provided by the sand. Flying-types like Hawlucha and Moxie Gyarados have incredible synergy with Mega Tyranitar, as they can set up on Choice-locked Pokemon like Kartana and Landorus-T and handle Fighting- and Grass-types types like Mega Lopunny, Kommo-o, and Tapu Bulu. In return, Mega Tyranitar takes care of Zapdos, which Hawlucha and Gyarados do not match up well against. Serperior is a solid partner for Mega Tyranitar because it grants paralysis support with Glare, utilizes Taunt + Defog to shut down entry hazards, and threatens the likes of Mega Swampert and defensive Landorus-T. Mega Tyranitar also enjoys partnering with Magearna, which solidly threatens the likes of Tapu Lele and Skarmory, and forces damage against Pokemon like Gastrodon and Rotom-W for Mega Tyranitar to clean up later in the game. Cresselia safely switches in against Ground- and Fighting- type moves aimed at Mega Tyranitar, as well as grant necessary support with Thunder Wave to cripple the likes of Mega Alakazam and Mega Lopunny and Lunar Dance to restore Mega Tyranitar back to full health, allowing another chance to sweep. Tapu Lele is a deadly wallbreaker that helps soften opposing teams to more easily enable Mega Tyranitar's cleaning ability and denies priority moves such as Bullet Punch from Mega Scizor.

Earthquake can be used over fire punch to hit maw/mag/pex/tran/tar for more damage, but the loss of coverage is often not tenable without support from magnezone
