OU Anti-Lead Donphan

I have never been a big anti-lead person, but this one can get rid of the other lead, set up rocks, AND get rid of rocks. Donphan's typing, stats, and moves are all perfect in conjunction. So here's my set:

[SET]
name: OU Anti-Lead
move 1: Earthquake
move 2: Stone Edge
move 3: Rapid Spin
move 4: Ice Shard/Stealth Rock
item: Life Orb/Lum Berry
nature: Adamant
evs:252 HP / 252 Atk / 4 Spe

Why this set deserves to be on-site:
-This is unlike most other leads
-Currently no set like this on Donphan
-Keeps out rocks on your side
-Can still work late game

Additional Comments:
-Outclasses Starmie in physical powerand bulk, typing, SR, priority, and coverage.
-Outclassed by Starmie in speed, and special.
-Beats almost all common leads, which includes Aerodactyl, Azelf, Infernape, Jirachi, Ninjask, Machamp, and Metagross. Roserade, Hippowdon and Swampert being the three in the top 10 that aren't beaten.
-Ice Shard is the preferred choice to hit Ninjask and Gliscor or whatever is switched in after beating the opponent's lead. But SR can be useful for obvious reasons.
-Evs allow Mixpert leads to be unable to OHKO Donphan, and Machamp leads are unable to 2HKO it. The max attack allows many OHKO's and aren't useful anywhere else.
-Adamant nature is required for it to work at all, so Impish isn't a good idea.
-Life Orb vs Lum berry depends on if you want more power or the safety from sleep leads (Roserade...).

Teammates and Counters:
-Being a lead, team mates aren't very useful, but a Blissey would help as to absorb special attacks and cause switches.
-Also a grass abuser could also be used for Swampert, so Roserade could be useful to add toxic spikes to the mix for stall teams. It can also absorb toxic spikes and fight and defend specially.
-His counters are Swampert because even when it can't OHKO Donphan, it is still a potential wall to Donphan. The best thing to do is to switch immediately SR.
-Smeargle and Roserade can be threats without a sleep absorber, even though they are both OHKO'd by Earthquake.
-Bronzong, Empoleon, and Froslass leads can also be scary, so just switch to a set-up sweeper like Gyarados and then they can't do anything about it.

This seems like it has some potential, but the EVs are screwy.

Increasing HP is a much better way to go with Donphan. Right now you have 196 DEF/60 SDEF. If instead of that you just do max HP:

Machamp DynamicPunch versus your spread: 40.5% - 48%
Same versus max HP: 39.8% - 47.1%

Heatran's Fire Blast (Shuca) versus your spread: 84.4% - 99.4%
Same versus max HP: 77.3% - 90.9%

Just two baseline calcs that show max HP is much better.

Also, not sure how you get "beats Roserade". It kills you immediately! In addition, this lead has a massive disadvantage over Starmie because Starmie greatly threatens Rotom-A if it tries to spinblock, while this...doesn't. You could throw Assurance on it. That might help at least.

Anyway, just my observations. Good luck with the set.

I can only see this set beating suicide leads, and it doesn't do a good job at that either. You beat Aero pretty easily, Azelf is shaky, the bulkier leads laugh at you. I don't think this set would do very well, sorry.

@Flareblitz: I like the evs :). But what I said about roserade is that donphan loses to it. And to starmie, it has physical powers, SR and priority to its advantage. Rotom usually isn't a problem, because getting up rocks and switching to rotom would be tough, as i could spin before they switch.

@shrang: well, I dont know what to say. It works pretty fine with me. I've just tested 11 more battles with it and the most common thing it lost to is roserade. I dont know what Feraligatr was doing as a lead lol.

I think that a Lum Berry would be a better item, so you can beat Smeargle and Machamp without too many problems.

Ice Shard is, obviously, necessary in this set in order to OHKO Nite Lead, and finish Smeargle and Sash Leads like Azelf.

However, I don't think it would be enough to give Donphan a niche in OU metagame.

The life orb helps 2HKO very many things such as Gliscor and Umbreon, but also keeps many OHKO's that are pretty important (would list, but when I wrote down some calcs I just put 100%). However a lum berry would help a lot with leads like them and also roserade, who is the devil in Donphan's eyes lol. It should be a choice.
Shard dosen't OHKO dnite, but stone edge has a 95.4%-112.7%. It also dosen't OHKO smeargle, otherwise lum berry wouldn't be a great item.
But, this set is an idea I had that works okay, and I just thought i'd post it.
Thanks for posting!

Indeed, I have not calc'd damages on Nite .-.

For Smeargle, I meant EQ + IShard.

Umbreon isn't really a threat amongst the leads of OU metagame so it's not a problem. Gliscor can't do anything to Donphan and you can spin its SR away. And IShard is always a 3HKO on him.

Eh, well I still think orb is a viable option and definately has some use on him. But lum berry will go up there as an option

This doesn't beat Machamp lol. It gets confused. And you have Max Attack so getting hit in confusion is gonna hurt. This set shakily beats Azelf who hits you very hard with Psychic. Stone Edge + Rapid Spin doesn't KO it so it doesn't really beat it. It does reliably take out Aerodactyl and Metagross (if it outspeeds. does it?) but that's about it. Swampert would 2hko or 2hko with Ice Beam I would assume, so it can heavily damage you and come back later. You talk about SR separating this from Starmie but it's not even a main option -____-. Tbh I really think Starmie outclasses this pretty badly.

Machamp: 2HKO's with EQ, and Machamp can only 3HKO. Plus, I think if it EQ's and ice shards it may be a 2HKO, but I'm not sure. Confusion isn't a problem with lum berry, but without it you can get lucky and I think theres a 50% chance you win without it (I'm again, not sure. I'm not very awake right now).

Azelf: You win, but it gets up rocks. Which you can't spin unless you spin while being attacked then shard.

Meta isn't outsped, but Meta can't do anything to Donphan lol.

Swampert is an all-out counter, just leave it alone lol.

Starmie is a speedy special version of Donphan, but Donphan has physical powers, priority, SR, and STAB EQ which hits many things super effectively, and when that dosen't work it also has Stone Edge. There are both reasons to use Donphan over Starmie and reasons to use Starmie over Donphan.

Donphan does 69.6% - 82.2% to lead champ with Life Orb while Machamp outspeeds and deals 39.8% - 47.1% with DynamicPunch. Someone else can do calc's but 50 % of the time you get a hit the first turn, and 50 % the second turn while theres a 50 % chance of getting hit by confusion the first turn. So idk what the % of winning would be but there's the details. With a Lum Berry, you do 53.5% - 63.3% which gives you a 50 % chance of winning (confuse hax second turn). Against max hp azelf, you do 55.6% - 65.5% with Stone Edge and 22.3% - 26.6% with Ice Shard which isn't a 2hko while it can rock then boom on you. Against 4 hp azelf you do 67.5% - 79.5% with SE and 27.1% - 32.2% with Ice shard which isn't even a guaranteed ko while it does 56.5% - 66.7% with psychic and obv kos with explosion so that's a win/lose depending on ev spread and if they taunt or not, as well as damage rolls. Lead meta you do 95.6% - 112.6% with Life Orb and 6.3% - 7.4% so that's always a 2hko but if you run lum, it can rock then boom on you so LO is a win and Lum isn't. Swampert beats you. Starmie rapes you. Aero loses. Jirachi can trick you an item or just get rocks up and die, so that's a win. Infernape is a win. Roserade is a lose. Hippo, you can spin but not really touch it so 50/50. TTar is a win. Heatran depends on the set. A lot of good players have been using Specs Tran which you downright lose to, but you beat Shuca Tran regardless of item (lum does 100.3 min!) Smeargle beats you with LO. Not with Lum though. Uxie can't do shit to you but it can't either. If it's a DS version you're fucked though. What I don't like about it is the fact that Starmie basically beats everything it does bar Machamp, (kinda, you lose a lot of the time). Starmie has much more late game use imo because of it's great speed, great typing, and with a Life Orb it can abuse it's speed and acceptable Special Attack to even sweep late game. This set looks decent but I think it may be outclassed, but that's up for the QC members to decide!

/end rant

I ran a set like this a while ago.

Donphan @ life orb
adamant
80HP/252att/172 speed
-Earthquake
-seed bomb
-ice shard
-Stealth rock

172 speed to beat metagross. seed bomb for pert. ice shard for aero, and sashes. LO to secure KO against metagross.

namely, i would run 172 speed, or at least offer that to beat metagross, and add seed bomb for pert.
