Official Nintendo Pokemon Tournament

Yeah, but this way is definitely cheaper. :D And a lot cooler and memorable.

One cool thing I thought of, is that we can trade with the Japanese for the foreign pokedex entries(and maybe even a few events). IIRC There are things like Heracross, Ponyta, etc that have different entries for your pokedex if you get one from a different country. This might be an ample opportunity to get some of those dex entries.

I'll be bringing my video camera again to record the semis/finals/any other matches of importance for at least 13+. If I can squeeze in the -12, I'll do that too. Of course if I am in the finals, I'll have someone operate the camera for me during the matches. :p

According to the Foreign Dex Entries page on Serebii, the Pokémon you are referring to are as follows:

Ekans ("Arbo")
Pikachu
Psyduck ("Koduck")
Ponyta
Staryu ("Hitodeman")
Magikarp ("Koiking")
Wobbuffet ("Sonansu")
Heracross ("Herakrosu")
Sneasel ("Nyura")
Teddiursa ("Himeguma")
Houndour ("Deribiru")
Wingull ("Kyamome")
Slakoth ("Namakero")
Roselia

If that interests you guys, those are the Pokémon to look out for.

I arrive Wednesday afternoon for the TCG Championships, I guess they pay for a lot more nights with the TCG. On Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, I should have a shirt with 'Magnechu' on the front and 'Lafonte' with art on the back. Hope to meet some of you there!

I also called Cathy Calahan, my travel agent from Pokemon Air. A driver at Orlando will hold up a "POKEMON" sign as players arrive, so several of us arriving at a similar time will likely share their complementary transportation to the hotel. No worries there.

My flight is landing at 7:15 pm Eastern time. I look forward to seeing you there, maybe even practicing a bit.

I got an email asking me some questions about if I want to do an interview etc.

I will try and bring a singles team with me too so maybe I could battle you guys/Japanese guys.

Also PBB, what is significant about that list of foreign pokemon, I'm wondering if I should attempt to get any. I also have a hunch that they are going to giveaway a Lucario, since iirc, tcg players are getting a Lucario card(I think I read that somewhere)

Yeah, I'm bringing a singles team too. And they are giving away a special Lucario on Sunday morning, Not sure if it's moveset or anything yet(hopefully it doesn't get Nasty Plot >_>). Go here, and go the schedule, down near the bottom. It alos lists other stuff happening over the weekend:

Well, I just found it cool to get a Japanese pokemon to trade from an actual Japanese trainer in person. And I might as well make it one of the things that has an alternate pokedex data entry. I'd go for Shaymin, but I doubt any of them will trade it to me for keeps. :P

and I didn't get that email you are talking about. =(

Fukuoka Champion: Natsumi Kunisada (F)

Yokohama Champion: Manami Kato (F)
Yokohama Runner-Up: Minori Miyauchi (F)
I find it funny that three females made it to the finals, and that 1/3 of the regionals were won by female participants.

You'd never see that happen over here.

Yes, there were no female finalists for the senior division in either LA or NYC, and only like 2 or 3 for the junior division. Females in the USA need to get their Pokemon game on. ;p

well, I'll see most of you tomorrow sometime or Friday(obviously Saturday and Sunday); just look for the Red Sox cap, and it will probably be me. ;)

Anyone in Orlando, my room is 674, come stop by if you get a chance. I've only seen PBB when I checked in to my room, hopefully everyone else makes an appearance so maybe we can do something during the trip.

This here was posted on the Pokegym (TCG site) earlier, I dunno if it's been mentioned already, but it seems like we'll be having more DS championships every year now!

"Note: thanks to Tego for the article!

Many Pokégym members have been wondering what will happen to Japan's Battle Road (the big qualifier for Japan Nationals) tournaments, and Japan's attendance at future World Championships, after the Spring Battle Roads 2008 and the Spring Japan Nationals 2008 were abruptly cancelled after the Hokkaido and Kansai Battle Roads in March.

Yesterday, special Japanese minisite on Worlds 2009 was launched, and not only does it reveal the location of Worlds 2009 as "on the west coast of the US" (!), it also presents a new championship series structure for Japan that seems to be a big change from what we've seen until now, with the 1000-ish person Battle Road Kansai and the following terrorist threat to the Kanto (Tokyo) Battle Road.

Here's the new structure, according to the website:

* Tournaments will be held for the video games AND for the Trading Card Game at all levels, including Worlds - which now seems to be called "Pokémon World Championships", not the "Pokémon TCG World Championships".

* You can now only enter tournaments if you're a member of the (relatively) new Pokémon Daisuki Club (I Love Pokémon Club) and have a member's card

* The levels of tournaments is now:

1) Prefectural championships - one for each and every one of the 47 prefectures of Japan
2) Regional Championships - these are held in 6 locations across the country, and thus basically seem to replace the Battle Road (or Winter Challenge) events
3) Japan Nationals
4) Worlds 2009

So what does this mean? The 47 prefectural championships is something very new and exciting. At the same time, Regionals and Nationals both seem to be invite-only, and are thus both reduced to small-sized events. The giant convention center hall style events now seems to be limited to casual events for beginners and younger players, while the road to Worlds has become tougher, more competitive and possibly bigger in attendance in total. (Having one tournament in every prefecture of Japan should raise the number of people competing for a spot in Worlds IMO, but it's only a guess).

Once again it seems like PCL has tackled challenges in a great way, and it will be exciting to observe the changes in Japan's tournament system with the new season starting in October."

^_^ Awesome info on Worlds.

But: how worldwide does the word worlds entail? Like, will England get a sniff at anything? (seeing as we did win the world pokemon video game championship in Sydney back in the R/B/G days!).

*Crosses everything*.

I'm personally hoping Canada gets some video game love here! I'm 99% sure we compete in the TCG worlds, so why not video games?

My only question about the world championship stuff (great info btw) is how many qualifiers will there be in the US? I hope there is more than the pitiful 2 there was this year, and that the selection will not be random!

UPDATE: Pretty much every US player was knocked out Round 1, myself included. Chris, the LA winner, is top 4, but they aren't doing those matches until 1 PM today. I have a few problems with the officiating but I won't delve too much into that now.

Hideaki Shimizu
Yasuhito Kajiwara
Izuru Yoshimura
Halordain

So these are our semifinalists. Congrats on Halordain being the only American left. The three that Duckster pointed out as being main threats were the three who made it the furthest in the tournament.

I really want to know what went so horribly wrong in the first round that all but 5 of the Americans were eliminated. This is really disappointing. :(

Yeah, what went wrong, what were the other people using? I bet the Asians had a cheat sheet or something, but since they had Pokemon DP before us....

My guess is the tournament is either over or scheduled for a grand finale as while it's great to see Halordain has made it to the top 4, I do wonder how the others fared, particularly jbomber (my round 4 opponent at NY named Diego) and XxBlueCookiesXx (my son's round 4 opponent at NY). While losing round 1 does not gain any special consolation prizes, I do hope it was a worthwhile experience as we would have loved to come had either of us won our matches in NY.

The final two Senior Division teams were:

Player 1:
Smeargle lv 1 @ Focus Sash
-Endeavor
-Fake Out
-Dark Void
-???

Bronzong lv 50 @ ??? (most likely Lum Berry)
-Trick Room
-Psychic
-Hypnosis
-Explosion

Metagross lv 50 @ ???
-Bullet Punch
-Hammer Arm
-???
-???

Snorlax lv 50 @ Sitrus Berry
-Fire Punch
-Return
-Belly Drum
-Protect

vs

Player 2:
Cresselia lv 50 @ Chesto Berry
-Calm Mind
-Rest
-Psychic
-Shadow Ball

Zapdos lv 50 @ Leftovers
-Thunderbolt
-Detect
-Hidden Power
-???

Metagross lv 50 @ Lum Berry
-Meteor Mash
-Earthquake
-Bullet Punch
-???

Latios lv 50 @ ???
-Draco Meteor
-Thunderbolt
-Psychic
-???

Sorry for the blanks, the names were in Japanese and some moves weren't used at all. I'll see if I can remember enough of the log to post it.

Interesting that the Japanese pretty much dominated the finals. Is it known if there is a Japanese "equivalent" of Smogon, or something of the sort?

Given that the next tournament seems to follow the same ruleset, albeit with more bans and on Platinum, do you all think that people will be more prepared for Level 1 Smeargle?
