Project NU Teambuilding Competition - Season 3, Week 10: Dollar Store Legendaries

Do you want to keep the tourney after each season?

  • the tourney is unique and why I contribute

  • it’s cool to have but not vital

  • I could care less

  • it’s a bit annoying

  • for the most part, I don’t like the tourney

Season 2 Week 7: Weather
You read that right this week we are building weather teams! Get out your raincoats, sunscreen, snow boots, and safety goggles! The only requirement this week is that your team makes use of rain, snow, sand, and/or sun in some way! Also happy Thanksgiving and to those who celebrate I hope you ate well but aren't in a food coma now!

:sv/klefki::sv/tornadus::sv/abomasnow::sv/hippopotas:

Multiple teams from the same weather type are permitted of course, but be mindful that the submissions aren't too similar to previous submissions. Most rain teams will have something like klefki, tornadus, and basculegion which is fine to repeat but 5/6 mons might be too similar. Use your best judgment and if there is any doubt feel free to reach out to me or POM if they are around! There are lots of cool things to play around with here like more offensive or more balanced versions of weather teams, 3 unique good weather types (and sand!), and ideas like partial weather too! Submissions are open now and close Tuesday December 3rd at around 10pm EST (GMT-5.) Happy Building!

This team is certainly a half pack of ass but very fun to use. Very standard except Mesprit + Arcanine were Pokemon I thought would be cool. I wanted Mesprit because Healing Wish is super super rare in NU, and restoring Venusaur or Scovillain to full so they can sweep late-game after they wallbreak early-game seemed promising. Arcanine was legit just me not wanting to use Paldean Tauros-F, and Extreme Speed for speed control when sun was down = good. It also isn't weather reliant to do things, so pog.

This is an update from a team bazaar team I made a while back. Click on the image for theme music! For full effect use it in battle too you won't regret it! The structure of the team is much the same as it has been, but beartic used to be a thundy-i before it rose to (and then got banned from) RU. One of the biggest issues snow has is that the abusers are pretty much all physical, and they typically need to set up in order to be scary. Why then do I have beartic over say kilo which would be a more logical replacement? Because SD encore beartic is sick. Also while being a great special attacker, kilo can't really break like thundy could with nasty plot, so it didn't really fill in the role like I wanted it to. Encore lets helps us not to lose to opposing set up sweepers and simultaneously gives us more opportunity to boost/get our mons in. Ice/fighting is really good neutral coverage and with tera ghost you can win the 1v1 vs the iron press mons as well. This set (and the surprise value of encore) can really mess with certain teams and knock some holes for cetitan to finish sweeping through later. Standard star-of-the-show cetitan (this could very well be ice spinner over shard but shard come in handy a lot too), sd spin aloslash as our removal, and a bulkier abomasnow because of how well it takes hits especially after a veil. You could definitely use a faster spread here but personal preference. Chandy gives us some power on the special side, a fire immunity, and can memento to give our sweepers turns to boost. Terablast fighting lets us bop a troublesome incin which can be tricky to handle for the team, but typically you don't use your tera on chandy and can also memento (just don't belly drum/sd on a wisp.) Ironically though post tera chandy is a solid incin switch in. Balloon makes us a better avalugg switch in which is a natural enemy of the team/archetype. Draco eject flygon to give an additional special attacker, provide those flygon resists/immunities, set rocks, and hopefully take a chunk out of a physical wall for our slush rush mons.

Replays: 1, 2, 3
Some of these replays are a little dated but I don't think that detracts from showcasing the team. I've had this for ages now and used it sporadically mostly in room tours. Also been successful in plenty of test games as well but I don't save those replays of course.

Also if no one else decides to make a sand team I will also post a sand team for fun :pika: (but not for voting :pikuh:)

When life gives you lemons, you make a billion dollars. When LTTM asked to make a weather team, I made  THE ultimate weather team. It features some metagame staples like Flygon, some oldies like Houndstone, and a GSC NU goat in Pineco.

Sand Stall ft. Pineco
:pmd/hippopotas: :pmd/naclstack: :pmd/flygon: :pmd/pineco: :pmd/houndstone: :pmd/registeel:

I remember this old tale the Smogon boomers would say, "Back in my day, we used sand stall in adv ou!" Yeah, thanks gramps for the idea because I'm reviving that idea and using it in 2024. Hippopotas is there because, well, we need a weather and he provides Sand. Sand + Roar + Hazard Stack laughs at teams without Boots (aka every low ladder team). Naclstack is a rock solid mixed wall that becomes a scary Special wall when Sand is up. Salt Cure is also broken af. Flygon is there because why not? It adds some breaking power to the team and helps with pivoting. Registeel is there because I thought a Steel would be a good fit because it is immune to Sand, and IronPress is funny. Houndstone is a nice physical wall that is damaged by Sand, though I did consider making it CB with Sand Rush, which is funny. Pineco is the ultimate hazard removal on this team. It beats stuff like Flygon, Mienshao, Breloom, and other stuff of that nature, while Spiking and removing Spikes. I chose him because of Overcoat existing and adding to the weather dynamic.

The whole idea of this team is to keep hazards up and bring in Hippopotas as much as possible for Sand. Naclstack and Wisp from dog are great at forcing damage over time. Just stall lol.

Snowy Retreat
:abomasnow: :cetitan: :cinccino: :chandelure: :klefki: :torterra:

Replays: 1
(I swear, I'll get better replays, but ladder has been ass rn)
:pmd/abomasnow: The weather setter of the team, I decided to go with something different from the usual set. I went physical. Ice shard means that abomasnow can revenge kill weakened threats, or flygon that are below 50%. Wood hammer does great damage due to its 120 bp, and recoil can allow it to safely get in a threat if aboma dies. Earthquake hits the steel and fire types that resist both moves. Icy rock also means that cetitan can continue its sweep for longer, as otherwise I find that effectively 2 turns to sweep (setting up hail, getting cetitan in and getting belly drum off) is not enough.

:pmd/cetitan: The second mon of the core, I decided to stick with mostly a standard set. The only change was making the tera type fire, which resists steel type moves but also makes it immune to burn, allowing cetitan to easily setup on incineroar.

:pmd/cinccino: Since we have three mons with a rocks weakness, we needed some hazard control. In comes HO mainstay cinccino. Standard set.

:pmd/chandelure: I wanted a spinblocker for the team, and chandelure is one of the best ghost types around. I decided to go with a special set. Usually on these niche HO teams, chandelure either goes with calm mind or memento. So what about both? Calm Mind means that chandelure can snowball into a threat quite quickly. However, if chandelure can't sweep, it can instead use memento to help a teammate sweep. I decided on colbur berry as the item, as you can take a knock off from the many mons that use it like incineroar, mienshao and toxicroak, and hit them back with an attack.

:pmd/klefki: The designated defensive mon on the team, klefki can support the rest of the sweepers on the team. Standard set.

:pmd/torterra: Finally, I wanted another abuser for veil, so in comes torterra. Torterra's main issue is that even after a boost, it can still be quite slow. With aurora veil, you can usually get two, which can end games on the spot potentially due to its immense power and speed. Standard set.

Semi-Sand-aconda
:lycanroc: :sandaconda: :munkidori: :chandelure: :bronzong: :toxicroak:

Admittedly, I went into the builder all excited to use lycanroc then said to myself "what the fuck do I do now". The basics of the team is to whittle down opposing walls until lycanroc can jump in and kill everything left. It can be a struggle to beat webs but lycanroc can usually handle it if they only use slower scarfers, if any
Replays: 1 2 3
(I'll also get some better once soon but I'm struggling sob)
[help]
:sandaconda: I didn't like the idea of using hippopotas since it feels like a momentum sink, sandaconda can switchin once and immediately pivot out to munkidori or lycanroc with the one-time eject button while setting sand. Glare is also a useful tool.
:lycanroc: The main sand abuser, I went for a simple adamant 4 attacks set with pretty self explanatory moves to 2hko the majority of the tier.
:munkidori: A scarfer faster than mienshao. Trick and toxic chain are useful for breaking down bulkier teams too, and the psychic/poison offensive typing is quite useful.
:chandelure: I felt like I needed something of a special attacker, and chandelure is one of the best. Spinblocks too as a ghost type, and I went with protect to scout out some choice items/movesets.
:bronzong: A levitating iron press mon that checks most flygon sets and sets rocks. Why tf not.
:toxicroak: toxicroak is the go-to for alolan muk and the bulky waters that the rest of the team struggles with. Tera ghost is a nice reassurance to have against unsuspecting cinccino, which can (and inevitably will eventually) get out of hand.

Sandy Cheeks (just for fun)
:hippopotas::sandslash::houndstone::lycanroc::slowbro-galar::klefki:

So I had already made the sand team I promised for fun, and while we did get 2 sand submissions neither were a full offensive sand, so I thought I'd post this anyways. Since I've already posted a different team, this is just for fun and not going to include it in the voting for fairness. Anyways on to the team!

Issues with sand:
  1. Hippopotas
  2. Sand rush abusers are all physical
  3. Sand rush mons all have inaccurate non-spammable stabs
  4. Sandslash
  5. Hippopotas
  6. Missing every move
I’m not gonna pretend sand is great but it is fun when you hit! Baby hippo isn’t good but it has sand stream, can set rocks 50% of the time, and is only not set up fodder because it gets roar. Sometimes you have to sack this and click roar to not lose. Sandslash is our first abuser and it’s… ok. Spin is cool to have but the 2 move coverage isnt great and neither is the power. Houndstone is decent but will miss poltergeists (thats literally why we also have ghost blast as a more reliable stab) and can’t click into mons you have already knocked. Also you can’t lock into a ghost move as easily when they have a normal type… but you just kinda hope they don’t and have to get turns right. Lycanroc is required on sand teams imo. It is the fast sand rush mon (the other are slower than scarfers) and there aren’t many solid rock resists running around. So yes you do have to rely on an 80% accurate move very often. Sometimes you have to hit several in a row. Good luck! (Added terablast rock here literally just to have the accurate move to clean with. Tera fight cc works too ofc.) Slowbro-G is mainly here to slow pivot with eject button, but also blanket checks some stuff. Klefki is here because even with sand stream baby hippo isn’t very reliable at getting up sand. The one big positive here is that there is a natural hazard stack built into the team with rocks hippo, spikes keys, and a spinblocker (if you predict right) in houndstone. This team can be very fun if you are hitting moves, but it is both hax and matchup dependent.

Replays: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5
Replay 1 really showcases the kind of teams you can expect to beat with this team...

clearly, lttm forget a bullet point in his issues section:
7. [insert water/grass type here] has no good switch-ins, causing “fun” trades

Also:
1. Lucario (v funny)
2. Rabia (saw video n liked)
3. LTTM (beartic moment)

1. Rabia (Arcanine being an abuser and revenge killer in 1 is neat)
2. Vaporeons (I think Vapo is onto something here. Lycanroc is actually pretty decent 80% of the time so why use a full sand?)
3. Heatranator (We had some similar ideas but I really like the inclusion of cincc on snow)

Lucario may have build the realest team of all time but I don't think I can vote for pineco stall in good conscious :worrywhirl: Was a delight to see though!

So, turns out that tourney never happened… It’s clear that this tier is sick of NUTC being on hiatus, and I can cure your disease. Anyways, here’s a (bracada) brand new season:
Y’all may enjoy my wordplay now.

Season 3, Week 1: Alolan Ninetales

:sv/ninetales-alola:

Being one of our newest drops, Alolan Ninetales immediately became a central force in NU, causing Cetitan to be banned. From there, Alolan Ninetales has capitalized on its good Speed and offensive typing to beat common threats like Flamigo, Gastrodon, and Flygon. Not only that but its versatility is through the roof, running multiple sets to great effect like Nasty Plot, Choice Specs, and Aurora Veil.

Since this week is starting early so that we can regain recognition, Submissions are open now and will be closing Tuesday, February 25th at around 10pm EST (GMT-6)!

Happy building!

Specs Atales Balance

:ninetales-alola: - :gligar: - :avalugg: - :registeel: - :munkidori: - :incineroar:

I built this team around Choice Specs Alolan-Ninetales, trying to take advantage of its unique STAB combination, coverage, and ability to throw off massive Blizzards. It even has options for dealing with many of the preeminent special walls in the tier, such as Alolan Muk, Registeel, and Bronzong. Tera Blast Ground 2HKO's the prior two after a spike, and Bronzong gets 2HKOed by Hex if statused. This team facilitates Hex quite well, with Thunder Wave Registeel, Toxic Chain Munkidori, and Will O' Wisp Incineroar. It also finds many opportunities to get hazards up, with Gligar carrying Spikes and Registeel carrying Stealth Rock. Gligar and Avalugg function as a solid physically defensive core, and Avalugg keeps hazards off for Ninetales. Registeel acts as the primary special wall, with Incineroar serving as a backup option against Chandelure or Hisuian Typhlosion. Finally, Munkidori is the scarfer on the team (and the best one in the tier).

Room tour finals - Ninetales sweeps the endgame, notably demonstrating a 3HKO on Alolan Muk with Blizzard

:vikavolt: Vikavolt's Veiled Venture :ninetales-alola:
:pmd/vikavolt::pmd/ninetales-alola::pmd/decidueye::pmd/tauros-paldea-blaze::pmd/porygon-z::pmd/diancie:
I was feeling hungry for a Sticky Web team, and I thought Alolan Ninetales could fit right at home on a webs build! I tried to pick partners that benefited from both webs and veil, which lead to including a lot of mid-speed setup sweepers and breakers.
:vikavolt: Vikavolt
I know what you're asking: "Why use Vikavolt when Galvantula can just do the job better?" Vikavolt has a few things going for it over Galvantula: improved bulk, a Ground immunity, and a monster SpA stat. This improved bulk means that, with minimal investment, you can tank a 5-hit Technician Cinccino Tail Slap and eliminate the rat, thanks to a handy Rocky Helmet equipped. Additionally, this can allow Vikavolt to prevent Rapid Spin from low-health targets, such as Avalugg which dies after Bug Buzz + Rocky Helmet. Also - Vikavolt's Energy Ball is even more threatening to Swampert and Gastrodon, with a roll to OHKO SpDef sets from full.

:ninetales-alola: Ninetales-Alola
Ninetales is both a beneficiary of webs, outspeeding Scarfers like Munkidori and Infernape, and an incredible supporting presence to its setup-based teammates with Aurora Veil. I chose to run Moonblast as the primary STAB and Dark Pulse for coverage to hit Bronzong, Munkidori, and Chandelure. The ability to lure and break Bronzong in particular is especially important considering the Porygon-Z set I'm running.

:decidueye: Decidueye
Decidueye is one of the best mons for both webs and veil teams, and adds a high-power priority move to the team with Spell Tag-boosted Shadow Sneak. It's also always nice to have a Ghost-type to block rapid spin, even though the Avalugg matchup isn't favorable. I used Poltergiest over Spirit Shackle since I didn't include Knock Off elsewhere on the team, though it does become a bit more difficult to deal with booster CM Scream Tail.

:tauros-paldea-blaze: Tauros-Paldea-Blaze
Next up on the squad is Redbull. Sometimes the base 100 speed tier just doesn't feel like enough, but on a webs team it's plenty fast to wreak havoc. Raging Bull helps with opposing veil teams and Earthquake provides amazing coverage versus Slowbro-Galar and Chandelure. Tera Steel is crucial for this mon, as it helps you flip the matchup against Scarf Munkidori and Flamigo, and can also be used later in the game to secure extra Bulk Up turns to finish out the game.

:porygon-z: Porygon-Z
Ahh, PZ my beloved. I went with the bulky double dance Sitrus Berry set, as veil gives it more chances to set up. After my success with Tera Blast Ground PZ in NUCL and Seasonal, I decided to continue using it. Ice beam hits pretty much everything that Tera Blast can't, bar Bronzong or the rare Rotom-Heat, but the rest of the team has that covered and expending Tera isn't required every game. The speed investment lets you outspeed Inteleon after webs, but you have Agility as well if you need to outpace scarfers up to Munkidori's speed, even without webs.

:Diancie: Diancie
Just about any Diancie set (except maybe Trick Room) would be nice in the last slot here, but I wanted to spice things up with an innovation of mine: Substitute + Encore. This set is extremely pesky deal with, as anything that tries to get in an IronPress war with you gets Encored. Substitute avoids Incineroar's Will-o-Wisp, Muk-Alola's Knock Off & Poison Touch, and Scald burns (after Tera Dragon). The speed falls somewhere in that highly contested vaporeon speed tier, with a Defense-boosting nature to get the most out of Body Press and enough SpDef to tank hits from Slowbro-Galar with your Substitute. A simple Meteor Beam + Stealth Rock set would be a fine addition to the team, but this is more fun.
I got rank 3 with this team, so yes it's legit

Unfortunately, I couldn’t create a new and original Alolatales team. But, I like this one, so it’ll do:
:cinccino::ninetales-alola::beartic::diancie::basculegion::kilowattrel:
Snow Copium Offense
had a similar build before cetitan ban, transferred it over and added cinccino bc i realized hazards are in fact real
:cinccino::loaded dice:: hazard clearer, veil abuser, weakens steels

:ninetales-alola::icy rock:: snow setter, encore + veil for cinccino and beartic

:beartic::life orb:: cetitan cope, sd sweeper, lo + jolly for power and speed, tera ground for twave immunity + rock resistance & eq boost

:diancie::power herb:: incin check, rocks, meteor beam to be threatening, fast to surprise walls like vapo and friends

:basculegion::leftovers:: sub + endeavor to bother water resists, special attacker to surprise avalugg on the switch for cincc & beartic + hits zong better

:kilowattrel::heavy-duty boots:: speed control, elec and ground immunity, uturn for unstoppable pivoting

Fairy Spam HO
:ninetales-alola::scream tail::diancie::cinccino::tornadus::flygon:

We have three strong fairy types that fit well on HO now, why choose just one? They all do a good job breaking for each other and have great offensive synergy. Usually teams have the resources to stop 1 or 2, but that still leaves diancie or scream room to clean up after! Also used this for NBT. Mixed flygon is a strong breaker, pressures steels, threatens amuk, and we don't have have many things that come in on this and don't leave at least significantly chipped. Last move on flygon can be a lot of things. I wanted it to be psychic noise to ensure progress sticks, but found myself needing the priority to pick things off. You shouldn't be clicking fimp with this regularly with this spread but it can be useful sometimes. Tornadus similarly is great at pressuring steels for our fairies. Alotales usually either sets veil twice or uses np + terablast fire to break a steel which is valuable either way! (and shh i didn't just copy paste this from the Bazaar post I had already made LOL. I meant to make a new team for this but didn't get around to it.)
