Hi everyone, I have a lot of information to share today regarding Sun in NU, the recent NU Council Slate, the NU Survey, and Slowbro's future in NU. There's a lot to unpack, so I felt it was more appropriate to make this as its own seperate thread so everyone can easily access this and get up to date on what's been happening in NU this month. To start off with, I'm going to share the results of the most recent NU survey and explain what this means for future tiering.
Sun received an average score of 3.24 / 5. This score was high enough to warrant discussion within council, but not anywhere near enough to warrant a quickban. (In general, it takes a score of approximately 4.1, give or take, to warrant an immediate quickban). That being said, there was a strong sentiment amongst prominent players within the community to address the growing concerns they had towards Sun as a playstyle, hence the PR Thread you would have noticed earlier in the week.
Mienshao received an average score of 2.7, indicating that it is not a priority for tiering action at the moment. We will continue to monitor it but have no plans to take any action at this point in time.
Finally, Slowbro received an average score of 3.6. This is a noteworthy amount of support, and the council has agreed that it is worthy of being given a suspect test in the immediate future.
Moving on from the survey, I can now share the results of our recent Sun Council Slate.
The Council debated over the week and took into account feedback from both the community, the Drought PR Thread, and discussions had with the tiering admin. We ultimately decided that the best and fairest course of action was to hold a runoff vote between banning Drought, Venusaur, or keeping the status quo.
Heat Rock was another option that was considered, but myself along with a few others did not feel that it was the most logical aspect of Sun to address because
1. Heat Rock is only potentially 'Broken' when paired with Drought. It is not an inherently broken or overpowered item that is commonly seen on anything other than Ninetales and Vulpix, or manual sun setters which are not deemed as an issue right now.
2. Drought is the cleanest and simplest way to deal with the Sun issue. It is arguably deemed as broken on all Pokemon that have it in the SV NU tier, and would follow the precedence of our Weather bans in NU.
Here are the results of the vote:
Neither 'Ban Drought' or 'Ban Venusaur' received enough of a majority within the runoff vote, therefore they will both REMAIN NU for the time being.
Despite this, we acknowledge that the vote was quite close and Sun is still a very contentious topic within the tier, so we will be monitoring Sun throughout the remainder of the month, and be revisiting it in June, assuming that support for action does not dissipate. In the meantime, I implore the community to continue experimenting both with building Sun and developing counterplay against it. I plan on putting out another survey next month to gauge whether sentiment changes on this playstyle after the community has had more time to adjust to it and see it in action in our flagship tournaments currently going on.
Finally, I have some better news to share. You've all been asking for it, and it's finally here. Slowbro is being suspect tested in NU, and you can get reqs right now! Read the NP Suspect thread for more information and share your thoughts on our pink friends presence in the SV NU tier.
That's all the news I have for today, stay tuned for more info after the Slowbro test comes to an end and feel free to join the NU Discord and NU room on Pokemon Showdown! to keep up with the latest discussions and ask any questions that you may have. Thank you!
