Metagame NP: Stage 15 - Labyrinth (Registeel gone to RU)

I also think that this Registeel rise will make HO a solid amount better. Before this, Registeel shut down a lot of HO shenanigans with T Wave and natural bulk and Copper just can't do that. Are we seeing another HO renaissance like before Registeel got super popular?

I agree with Slice here - Registeel was a very splashable Steel-type that could check physical and special threats from HO simultaneously. Bronzong is way easier to chip in comparison due to its weaknesses to Cinccino's Knock Off, Alolan Ninetales's Dark Pulse, and Porygon-Z's Shadow Ball. Copperajah does alright but due to its awkward stat spread it can't realistically be both physically and specially bulky. Klefki is still an amazing anti-HO tool with Prankster Thunder Wave and Foul Play. Without Registeel's incredible mixed defenses we will have to put a little more effort into preparing for HO, but it is WAY too soon to determine it's overpowered.

Klefki is def way more reliant on it's typing to take hits as well as prankster to get moves off before it takes them because compared to the other steels, it has significantly less bulk so if it's up against something that doesn't care about twave it'd better hope it can land the foul play before they obliterate it but it is probably the next best thing we have for a steel that checks HO. Copper is not something that stands in the way of HO but probably joins the war on HO on the side of HO with knock off, whirlwind, and 130 attack to be a very aggressive steel/hazard setter. Also yeah hard agree that so many mons do benefit from bronzong being significantly more common hazard setting bulky steel.

Hi everyone! Although the tier is in a relatively balanced spot, there's been a lot of internal discussion in council chat about the tier, especially with the Registeel rise, and we wanted to get discussion going to hear what people think about the tier currently, the potentially problematic Pokemon in it, and if any action or change should be taken. Do we find things balanced? Is the tier fun? Are there broken Pokemon? Etc etc etc

Here's what's been discussed by us as potential Pokemon to be deleted:

:cinccino: - The rat doesn't need an introduction. It's a speedy offensive threat, offensive removal option, and HO enabler that has helped shape a solid amount of the current tier. For a while now, people on council have felt like it's problematic, especially because the combo of fast Tidy Up + Encore on HO facilitates a whole host of other Pokemon like Eviolite Scyther, but also because of how strong the Loaded Dice sets are. Despite HO falling off a bit, the loss of Registeel definitely makes HO and Cincinno significantly stronger which is why it's back in discussions.

:basculegion: - Once Substitute sets were discovered and became really popular, the fish has seen a dramatic rise in ban calls from council. It's the ultimate balance killer because of its bulk and typing and we've all seen it just sweep teams behind a Sub. Basculegion also has a few other sets worth considering like Agility WP on Veil HO or Scarf, but only Sub sets, whether it be SubSplit, Sub + 3 attacks, or Sub + Endeavor, are really seen as broken. Do people also hate the fish, or is it just Django?

:flamigo: - A newer mon to the broken conversation, but still a potent one. Compared to the other two Pokemon, Flamigo is much simpler to evaluate. It just clicks buttons. That's it. It's just really damn good at it. Scrappy CC + BB essentially has no switch ins in the tier and more and more people on council have been wondering if this clicking ability is too much for the current tier.

:scyther: - I'm pretty sure etern just hates this Pokemon because it beat him badly one time, but it's been brought up a bunch. Eviolite Scyther + Tera is a match made in heaven and it's been a HO staple for ages now. It's bulky, strong, and has insane sweeping potential. Arguments against it often revolved around its reliance on Eviolite, and subsequently its reliance on Cincinno removal on HO, but it's definitely a massive offensive threat. Another Pokemon that the loss of Registeel makes much better.

:oricorio pau: / :oricorio: - The cringe birds that we hate. I hate cringe birds. Realistically, there's not really a difference between these two and the other ones and Registeel just rose. So cringe.

One adition to the list Pokeslice

:SV/diancie:

I know talking about A+ isn't that innovative but with the rise of the most resilient Steel in the tier, she has 1 less threat+defensive check. I wouldn't be against to consider her S tier just for the state of OTR Diancie. Yeah Zong still exists, same with Copper. But both are much easily removed and overwhelmed than Regi and on top of all they are much less disruptive because the lack of TW.

OTR is both a cleaner and a breaker. Single handily smashes many HO teams. And is a great HO tool herself.

Tbh I'm fine with the mata how it is now. Probably :cinccino: is the most annoying of all mons we have atm. Its splashable, independent , reliable, set versatility and has snow ball potential.

:basculegion: I think is fine. Yeah the biggest problem is that you need to account for choice items just to get subbed but that's part of the game. Very strong but not broken specially because the last slot is generally something meh Pain Split, Psy Fangs, Flip turn. Neither feel particularly amazing.

:flamigo: does migo things. Flying/Fighting with Scrappy is truly amazing. Not many things can switch in it without fearing the KO or the 2 hit if read correctly. We are being not that much creative in our scarfers that makes Flamigo have a very easy time when everyone knows that the only 2 mons that will outspeed it are Flygon and Munky. In general even if naturally we don't have easy answers I still think its a bad on us that migo is having a lot of success .

:Scyther: is stupid. But I like it. A mon that needs 2 turns to get going + if you are not careful you enter the field at 50% hp or you run boots and you are not bulky and kind of a teramon. Above average risk for high reward .

:oricorio-pa'u: Wont talk about the cringe birds. Tour mons exclusivities. Psychic is far better than Fire and will be keep being abused on Terrain. I think the pink one is banworthy because it the same as the others. The fire one you get demolished by rocks which make much harder to do what a Oricoreo does .

:cinccino: :scyther: I'll talk about these 2 together, since sycther is really only strong when it can use eviolite, and cinccino is the main reason why it can afford to use it in the first place, and seeing as cinccino is the primary enabler of these types of hyper offense structures it should be the one targeted if we take any form of action, I am however not 100% certain action on it needs to be taken and am sorta on the fence at the moment

:basculegion: sub sets have been the primary problem as of late, but we also can't forget what a random rain team can do if you lack a proper water immune/resist and many of those can be 1-2 hit KO'd by CB tera blast ghost, but rain usage isn't that common due to alolan ninetales existence still I just wanted to make sure rain was noted on what this thing can do. Now vaporeon is easy enough to slot on a lot of balance teams and even some stall, but unless you tech your vaporeon specifically for sub legion then sub legion can just beat it down, sometimes still beating it down even if you do tech for it because legion could be physical or special behind sub and you don't even know which until it clicks, and other options vs sub legion include things that ignore sub like infiltrator chandlure, toxtricity (though unless your scarf, legion could be faster and just KO you) and bullet seed cinccino? and defensivley wo-chien who is not used or seen as particularly viable. Personally pro-ban on the fish

:flamigo: Its stabs can be quite difficult to switch into if you guess wrong which it clicks but flamigo also tends slowly remove itself from the game after it clicks button, be it through brave bird recoil or attacking into a rocky helmet user over and over, or clicking CC expecting a switch and dying as they stay in. Flamigo not being particularly fast also keeps it in check vs more offensive teams and defensively mons like glowbro, bellibolt, and houndstone can do a good job at pivoting around it, punishing it, or just outright taking its hits. I can see why some people might have issues with it but it's a DNB from me

:oricorio-pa'u: :oricorio: Baille is absolutely not an issue right now and if it ever to starts to become one I think the discussion wraps back to cinccino as the oris have always needed their item slot to get the +1 defense and baille is 4x weak to stealth rock, pa'u on the other hand sees highs and lows, it certainly struggles a bit more than pompom and sensu when it comes to doing what the birds do, but also still has games where it just runs away with the game freely because the opponent didn't prep well enough for it or just got flinched by even 1 air slash, diancie being solid right now also hurts it but even vs diancie it can still find a way getting turns right with tera QD and taunt, and being quad resistant to body press intially also helps it vs diamond press sets which usually don't do enough with its 8 diamond storms alone to force all of its roosts and that's if they all land, and encore can just be taunted, also further reason why baille is fine is its quad weak to diancies diamond storm and tera steel makes it weak to body press. It's less consistent than the prior 2 we have banned but it's still a cheesy match-up fishing element than can find a way to win bad matchups anyway and makes the builder less enjoyable. I'm pro ban on pa'u but understand that others might see it's lower consistency as a reason to not ban.

I'll throw my hat in the ring in regards to discussion. Admittedly I haven't played too much after shifts as I have been trying out drops from other tiers and also due to the fact that a lot the teams I've liked using had Registeel and honestly they can't be played in the same way without it but I'll try give thoughts regardless.

:cinccino:
Better without Registeel for sure. All steel types get heavily chipped by unboosted Tail Slaps with the exception of Duraludon which of course has its own issues. Its speed tier after a boost is entirely uncontested too (outside of shitty niche scarfers). Encore is cool but I think another coverage move such as Triple Axel/Bullet Seed/Rock Blast can be nice as well to have an easier time with defensive roadblocks like Diancie/Amoonguss and even limiting how much Incineroar can Intimidate cycle you. I understand that it can enable HO quite effectively, but at this current point I do not believe this pokemon requires action and should only be monitoerd. The HO teams that feature Cinccino are less effective now that they have been under the spotlight and people know the lines to play against them and Cinccino itself while strong is nothing broken. Yet. Should definitely be monitored closely.

:basculegion:
I have thoroughly enjoyed using this guy over the last few weeks, specifically a Mixed Substitute set which abuses many of the defensive cores that are currently being used in NU. I have many replays of this guy putting in crazy work which I will show below:
I think it's truly for the betterment of NU if this guy is removed. Even with Registeel it was slightly over the top. The defensive profile of Basculegion as well as the very solid natural bulk lets it get far too many opportunities to get free Substitutes and fire off attacks. Because of the nature of Substitute sets it can afford to have a solid amount of investment in bulk too. Even something like Vaporeon will lose to this pokemon if it does not carry Roar. I do not mind whether this guy gets banned or not because it's very fun to use but should probably be banned for the best.

:flamigo:
Brutal STAB combo is pretty much how I would sum up this guy. Basically have to predict right every time otherwise it will cleave through your team. It's not insanely strong or anything but 2HKOs much of the tier with either STAB and can re-position well for other breakers with U-Turn as well as being quite resilient to hazard damage, similar to Mienshao of previous metagames. However, it doesn't have the same sort of longevity, getting easily worn down by residual damage (recoil, Rocky Helmet, Static proc etc.) and isn't particularly bulky either. It can kinda remedy this with Roost but you're giving the opponent many free turns by doing that if you are choiced (you will be choiced 99% of the time). I think the cons of Flamigo outway the pros pretty decently. Firmly DNB on this guy for now.

:scyther:
Really don't think it is all that good honestly. The fact that it is tiered NU usage wise is quite baffling considering it is only viable on one team but it is pretty damn annoying. It's forced to be paired with Cinccino where it acts as an Swords Dance sweeper/cleaner with Eviolite. It is pretty terrible at everything else and the user of Scyther at least has to play with a bit care so that rocks are off when it comes in. I think it's fine to keep in the tier despite being cheesey. It's much more tame relative to some of the previous HO staples that were in the tier.

:oricorio pau: / :oricorio:
Honestly these guys are arguably worse because I would say Copperajah beats them even harder than Registeel does due to Sheer Force Rock Slide backed by a very impressive base attack. Tera Steel can be circumvented by slapping on Heat Crash. It can even phase them out with Whirlwind and deny the Kee Berry defense boost with Knock Off. However, people will DEFINITELY pull up with some brainrot grassy terrain team during NUPL utilising these guys and cheese many wins so it's best to wait until then when it comes to these guys, because right now they ain't on shit.

TL/DR: Maybe ban Basculegion. Definitely monitor Cinccino over the next few weeks. Flamigo is fine. Scyther is mid. Birds are ass rn but wait till NUPL cuz there's too many shameless terrain spamming individuals.

Also throwing my hat into the ring to give my thoughts.

:cinccino: If we wanna nerf HO, then this is the mon to do it. But even still, I'm unconvinced this is broken. It can definetely put in work and enable a lot of HO styles but it usually can be stopped by steels and physically bulky pokemon like amoonguss and avalugg. Maybe we suspect this? But not really convinced.

:basculegion: This is probably the second most broken mon in the tier, but I'm still unconvinced its broken. Sub sets have to put in a lot of work to actually win, with lots of predictions having to be made at times. Definetely a powerful pokemon, but water immunes, stuff like wo chien and amoonguss, hazards can stop it semi reliably.

:flamigo: Fine mon, it hits pretty hard but it commonly can get screwed over if it locks itself into the wrong stab option and kills itself pretty easily. Others have talked about it better, so I wont talk about it more.

:scyther: Also a fine mon, needs two turns to actually get going and has to have rocks off at all times, which some teams can abuse if they can force cincinno in early to die. And even at +2, something like zong or klefki can trade with it pretty well.

:oricorio pau: :oricorio: Lmfao, I fucking called it. The birds are genuinelly bad, only really useful in the balance matchup and 90% of the time, something else like band breloom or cm chandy is better because they also have uses in other MU's. And even then, I've found balance teams can usually trade 1-2 mons for the ori's in order to stop the sweep, and still come out on top. Trust me, as soon as you stop auto including the birds into g-terrain teams and start exploring other balance breaker options, g-terrain will get so much better.

:munkidori: I'm going to be throwing this mon into the ring, not because I think its broken or even unhealthy that much, but because I do think it should be discussed. Munkidori is really difficult to deal with if you don't have a steel type, with really only a-muk and AV glowbro taking it on if you don't have steels. Of course, if you do have a steel, then its decently easy to deal with in a vacuum, but we have seen that offensive teams are more then happy to use a steel overwhelm strategy to break through the steel. Ofc, our steels are also very good, but I do think that being forced into using them on the majority of the teams is definetely constraining to an extent. I think honestly we do need to re-evalute if being forced into using a steel on most teams is too constraining or not with our steel options becoming less and less, and if we do determine it is too constraining, then maybe action on this mon is warenteed.

We've got tournament stats back again! The first round of NU Swiss is a great opportunity to look at how Registeel leaving has impacted the tier, and give another viewpoint to the above questions about potentially problematic mons.

My takeaways from these numbers:
- Flygon, Bronzong, Diancie continue to make up the top 3 all getting positive winrates. These are probably all S rank mons and dominate the tier. This trio is the baseline to build around and build against
- Flamigo and Munkidori both have crazy winrates, and combined they have a nutty 72% winrate.
- Cinccino, Scyther, and Klefki are on fraud watch with their 40% or less winrates
- Copperajah is probably the big winner from Registeel leaving, obviously.
- Infernape and Tauros are sitting pretty with 75% winrates, maybe they benefit from being able to run coverage to hit Flamigo checks.
- Some underrated mons (high winrate and low usage): Gastrodon, Muk-A, Avalugg, Brambleghast, Inteleon, Scrafty. Should these get more usage?

Most important takeaway: stop using the inferior Gastrodon:
Code:
| 43 | Gastrodon-East | 5 | 4.46% | 20.00% |

As for the potentially problematic mons, in my view nothing needs changing right now. I find the meta well balanced with many different styles possible, and nothing completely overbearing. It is a little bit restrictive to build, with Flygon, Flamigo, Munkidori, Muk-A, Scald in general, and Spikes all causing quite specific answers, which can force teams to look somewhat similar. I'm interested to see with all the tours coming up (Swiss, Open, NUPL) and more builders involved in the tier if we move beyond this and create more interesting builds. I'd definitely keep looking at Flamigo and Basulegion, as those have the most potential to be problems.

Another round of Swiss stats!

Noteworthy things:
- Winrates of all the top mons (Flygon, Bronzong, Diancie, Munkidori, Flamigo, Basculegion, Kilowattrel) drop from R1. Probably indicates people adjusting to the top threats in the metagame
- Incineroar continues to underperform, and Scrafty and Muk overperform despite being much lower in usage. Time to adjust the Dark type your team is using?
- Klefki fails to impress while Copperajah continues it's resurgence in the absence of Registeel
- Gastrodon and Sylveon continue to outperform Vaporeon
- Avalugg outperforms all other removal options (ignoring Cinccino) - Altaria, Tsareena, Brambleghast all fail to impress

- Avalugg outperforms all other removal options (ignoring Cinccino) - Altaria, Tsareena, Brambleghast all fail to impress
im one of the Golurk winners RAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHH :golurk: :golurk: :golurk:

In all seriousness though, I also think that the meta is currently ok, no one teamstyle is overshadowing the others. Am excited to see how the meta's gonna evolve in these next few weeks!

So, Swiss is still in its initial stage and has a more diverse population of players but the 2 big stats are the PZ and Migo win rate 60% or more wile having good usage rates.

And if my previous comment stated that Migo was good because we were playing poorly vs it still partially true. The way it picks apart offense builds when it has the speed advantage is incomparable atm.

The most interesting tech was Wadley running protect in his Pauros. Once you know on what Migo is locked it's threat lvl goes down 83,77%

As for PZ is clear that's the premier SpA breaker on the tier and an excellent partner to Migo. The advantage you can accumulate of predicting an obvious switch and position a PZ with Uturn is gigantic. If you get the download boost not many things can comfortably enter the field.

Expected those 2 to continue this dominance for the next forcible future until some adaptation on sets are made.
