Nickname discussion

I named my Fennekin Mozilla because it's so obvious it's genius.
Salute.

My Pokemon are usually named after my internet friends, 'cuz they're more unique. Sometimes I'll use their actual username, like 5hokage5, but other times I use their nicknames, like Shanks.
But I have other, more random names that I still like, such as Mutter the Kangaskhan and Chase the Garchomp.

Pungence the Bronzong

Bronzong's Japanese name is Dootakun, the first half of which resembles the English word "Dolt," meaning a stupid person. I regularly watch the YouTube content creator BDoubleO100, and one of his series is Attack of the B Team, where he plays on a server with his (real-life) brother Pungence. Pungence is known (read: made fun of) for not being very smart, saying such gems as "I think he tricked us" or "He made me drop my backpack!" I have another Bronzong named "Stinky," which has a similar connection, being that Pungence's antics on the Attack of the B Team server have gotten the Swedish YouTuber Keralis1 to nickname him "Stinky Ballsack," because apparently "pungo" means "scrotum" in Swedish and if something is pungent that means it smells bad.

CXI the Lanturn

My sister is Chinchou111, and 111 in Roman neumerals is CXI. I also have a Graveler named VI, which is again from Roman neumerals and I hope you can make the connection from there.

Lately ive taken to naming shinies I find in horde battles( and friend safari) after rappers...keyonce the klefki(its characteristic is: Somewhat vain (too bad its not a male..re:Keynye West)), SirMIXaLOT the seviper ( my anaconda dont want none) and Bruno Mars the Stunky

...someday

I have this X file, and I have a Pinsir named ShinKicker. I don't know if this is appropriate or not, but I at least know it sounded cool to me at the time. I also have a Mienfoo named Molly, although I have no reason for naming it this.

I love this thread!! This is generally something I don't share or get to talk much with other people cuz it's strangely uncommon, but I've loved nicknaming all my team's mons in-game since gen3 or so. I also nickname my competitive teams when I feel I'm gonna save it and use it for a long time.

It makes it easier to remember the mons you've used in the past, but only to a certain extent. In Emerald I remember in my latest run(s) I had my Blaziken named Blaze (so original) and a Gardevoir called Freya for the nordic Goddess.

I sadly don't remember much about my Diamond team besides a Gyarados called SolidSnake for obvious reasons.

Gen5 was the gamechanger for me. It's kind of hard for me to forget my hall of fame entree's nicknames; i dont know if it's cuz it has only been a few years or because I put a lot more thought into them.

  • Torchamp the Emboar: Pretty obvious mix of Torch and Champ.
  • Vera the Whimsicott: Primavera is spanish for Spring. In fact, it's nickname was Prima at first, but I later changed it cuz I had a cute friend called Vera that I thought matched this pokemon p well.
  • Galvani the Galvantula: obviously named after Luigi Galvani the physician.
  • Kirikiri the Excadrill. This is the onomatopoeia for a "drilling" sound in japanese.
  • Coyfel the Liepard. Just a combination of Coy and feline.
  • Yin the Reshiram. Yeah, legendary, whatever. Obvious taoism is obvious. I don't think I used it much in the league anyway :p
I actually had to look for my Black cart to remember the mons after Galvani. I was a lot closer to the first three, really lol.

I also found my 4 main HearGold mons in this cart! Agnak the Typhlosion (there's a Monster Hunter mon in there that looks like him imo), Hunter the Gengar, Ryuusei the Starmie (shooting star in japanese), and Striker the Scizor. Striker is the jp name for Scyther.

I still remember my X team off the top of my head, but I'll spare y'all that since I played the game in japanese and I don't wanna have to go into a lengthy explanation for their nicknames :p

image.jpg image.jpg I tend to nickname most of mine after anime characters, like with Mega Audino I'm going to nickname it CureEcho because of the way it kinda looks like this anime character called Cure Echo

I have the same feeling, especially since many of my friends don't nickname their Pokémon.

*sigh*
Both my love for horror films and my love of yandere requires me to mention this, but did anyone else think of Audition when they read that nickname?

im weeaboo as hell and that still flew over my head :p

*insert somewhat sadistic laugh here*
Audition is a 1999 Japanese horror film about a widower who does a fake audition to try to find a new wife. One woman, Asami Yamazaki, stands out. Little does he know, she is all kinds of insane. She makes Yuno Gasai look like the poster child of mental health. There is one part, of which the following is the only detail I will give, she actually says "Kiri kiri kiri kiri kiri..." and if you've seen the scene, that bit of Japanese makes you freeze in fear.

Edit from 18 November 2014: I've mentioned Yuno a lot in this topic. Makes you wonder about my sanity.

Oh geez, nicknames. Mine tend to range from various references to random terms that come to mind, so their creativity is all over the place.
I'll give the names of my Trick-or-treat friendly competition team members as an example:(Well, except the one I got from elsewhere that was named already)

Elegy the Gourgeist (The dex entry mentioned something about singing)
Hetty the Banette (A character from Gunnerkrigg court)
Hestia the Chandelure (The goddess of hearth fire)
Miasma the Gengar (The toxic mist from Final fantasy crystal chronicles, but I know it has an IRL meaning too)
Kabula the Drifblim (The killer blimp boss from the Kirby series, at the very least from Superstar ultra)

I give nicknames to all the pokemon I IV breed and EV train, though I'll refrain from dumping all of them here for TL;DR reasons.

I named my Banette "Lotso", after the teddy bear in Toy Story 3. Think about it; they are pretty much the same thing: Lotso the bear was (accidentally) abandoned by the girl (Daisy iirc?), and tried to find her, only to find that he had been replaced. Devastated, he turned evil as a result. Meanwhile, the lore behind Banette is that it was abandoned by a child and thus turned evil, seeking the child that disowned it. The only major difference between the two is that Banette became evil before finding the child, while for Lotso it happened after. That and, well, Banette isn't a pink, strawberry-scented teddy bear, but I guess when it goes Mega its feelers are pink.

All of the other nicknames for the trick-or-treat friendly are so bad they're funny. There's "Doppelgengar" the Gengar (because Gengar is Clefable's shadow), "Fire Lamp" the Chandelure (no explanation needed), "Jackie Frost" the Froslass (like Jack Frost, but Froslass is female), and "Inky" the Dusknoir. (I had absolutely no ideas remaining when it came to Dusknoir, so I named it after one of the Pac-man ghosts.)

Here's some Arceus nicknames:
Arceus-Fairy: St. George (patron saint of England, legend says that he slew a dragon, which combined with a Fairy-type Judgment makes sense)
Arceus-Ghost: Yomotsu (short for Yomotsu Hirasaka, the slope that leads into Yomi in Japanese mythology. Also the real name of Twelfth from Future Diary. Yeah, I could have gone for Hades/Pluto, but this was more obscure and therefore more interesting to share)
Arceus-Bug: Gohma (after many spider-like bosses in the Legend of Zelda series, including my personal favorite game of all time, Ocarina of Time).

Whimiscott: 100%Cotton
I just went with Cotton, personally.

Hestia the Chandelure (The goddess of hearth fire)

I laughed at this because in Australia we have a company that makes bras called Hestia, they say it's an acronym for 'holds every size tit in Australia' lol.

My mother accidentally came up with a perfect name for Mega Glalie: Frostbite. I can't wait to transfer Frostbite onto the games proper instead of just the demo.

My favourite Glalie nickname is Donut. Glalie looks sorta like an onigiri and Brock calls them jelly donuts in an early English dub of the anime

Anyway may as well list a couple nicknames that I'm not totally ashamed of...

Virgil the Zapdos. He's a thunderbird
Capt. Falcon the Talonflame
Flylo the Scizor. Reference to producer Flying Lotus, was originally an in-game Scyther that I later evolved
Hans the Excadrill. Obvious Moleman reference
Violet the female Gengar. Obviously for the colour, and also Gengar is pretty round and that girl gets pretty round when she eats the candy in Charlie and the Chocolate Factory so...
Mitsukurina the shiny Sharpedo. I typed 'pink shark' into Google and Wikipedia told me that Goblin sharks are kind of pink. It also said Mitsukurina next to genus so I rolled with it.
Scarlet the Aegislash. Finn's golden sword in Adventure Time
Beezus the Beedrill. Likes fishsticks (also have a female named Beeyoncé)

I also bred several Honedge eggs in hopes of getting at least one SV match, I ended up getting a few of them hatched and they all needed nicknames. They all got named after (what I deduced after some serious lurking of swtor.com) the best Sith swordsmen, this was because shiny Aegislash's red-tipped blade reminded me of a red lightsaber. So far I have Caedus, Kas'im and Maul (going to stay as a Doublade).

Well, this thread definitely caught my interest, for, as a competitive pokemon player, I take pride in naming each and every pokemon based on its qualities and/or my personal relations to the pokemon.
Here is a list of a few:
Lanayru the flygon (Legend of Zelda: Skyward sword).
Kursk the Blastoise (Russian submarine)
Pugna the Mienshao (fight)
Invictus the Ferrothorn (unconquerable)
Squall the talonflame (strong gust of wind and Final Fantasy VIII)
Calvin the Venusaur (refers to the Calvin Cycle)
Genesis the Umbreon (directly relates to Eevee's immense evolutionary potential).
I'll add more later on.

My friend came up with the gem that is frostitute the jynx. I don't usually like nick naming Pokemon, but I once got a reshiram from GTS nicknamed FLOOFY (yes, it was all caps)

I usually just nick my pokes off of what they are but I'm having a problem. I cant think of a clever name for either lati and its really bothering me since every team I use usually has a lati and I'm stuck nicking it something unrelated. I thought this would be a decent place to ask.

For Latias, I have the suggestions:
Yumi (femine japanese word for beauty and popularity).
Mei (Japanese little sister)
Crimdracia (a combination of crimson and draco)
For Latios, I suggest:
Tempest (a violent wind storm)
Alacrius (alacrity)

Here are some of mine:

Chim Chim, my Infernape. He was my first Pokémon ever. I thought the name was cute for Chimchar, and it eventually stuck. He is now Lv. 100 on Pokémon Y.

Red Flash, my Scizor. I came up with this recently. It sounded cool and it fits Scizor well.

Lord Helix, my Omastar after Twitch Plays Pokémon. Somehow, it's name became Lord. Must be a glitch. I like glitches anyways.

Fire Red, my Charizard. Named after the game itself.

Tempest, my Lugia. Since Lugia's ultimate attack shoots powerful wind, the name fits.

Aura Storm, my Lucario on, after Lucario's Final Smash in Super Smash Bros. Brawl.

Napoleon, my Empoleon. Who Empoleon was obviously based off of.

Flareth, my Flareon. After the classic myth that was spread before Pokémon GSC, of Flareon's supposed evolution.

Genesis, my Mew (from the Mew Glitch), since it is an ancient pokémon.

Genus, my Mewtwo. I honestly have no idea. It just came to me.

Pheonix, my Ho-Oh. Ho-Oh is a pheonix, and it sounded cool. (Not based off Pheonix Wright)

I honestly hate to nickname my Pokemon. It just doesn't feel right in my eyes.
If I nickname Pokemon, it feels like they're more tools than free-willed creatures. I like to think of each of mine as unique, different from each other, especially my Legendary Pokemon. I just can't drive myself to. Something screams at me a massive "NO!" in my mind. It doesn't feel like something I should be doing.
Sure, nicknaming Pokemon may make it easier to remember which was what, but honestly, I like to stick with the original names. In my eyes, they're a lot easier to remember. Perhaps it's because I'm used to sticking to my roots. Then add the fact that I'm terrible with names as well. It just doesn't seem right to nickname them for me. But, who am I to judge others? I just like seeing each of them the way they should be...

When I was younger, I used to be a lot more uptight about nicknames and wanted them to be super fancy. Think looking up names of ancient deities. Favorite example: Latios and Latias? Apollo and Artemis.

Nowadays, in most cases I either don't nickname them or go for something more whimsical. No point being too pretentious about a game :P For a while I was wonder trading away spitback Marrill with PIKABLU as their nickname, to pay homage to the early era of Pokemon when kids believed any rumor circulating on the net. If you received one of them, you're welcome.

This seems odd to me. Nicknames help with uniqueness. For example, there are an uncountable number of Vaporeon but only one Yukiteru (my Vaporeon). There are tons of Infernape, but only one Emily (my very first Pokémon).
I do understand not nicknaming legendaries. I rarely ever do so unless I have a nickname I really, really like, such as The Doctor (Celebi) or Freddy (Darkrai).

I've forgotten one nickname that I really enjoy:
Rowsdower the Stoudland

Nothing can compare with my Dialga named Doctor Who. It's the Temporal Pokémon, so I had to give it the name of a Time Lord. Although, now that I think about it, Rassilon can work too.

I still feel like "TARDIS" is a better fit for Dialga since it is blue. I named my Celebi "The Doctor".
